Freedom is a precious currency that is required in the lives of people who love their country above self. History tells us of men and women who paid with their lives and even endangering their families in their quest for freedom. Our very own Dr. Jose Rizal paid dearly when he chose to be “on the other side.” His family were persecuted, maligned and suffered untold misery in the hands of his enemies. And yet there is something about freedom and independence that inspite of the odds a lot of these men and women bravely pursued their dreams: their people were liberated and gained the freedom they so richly deserved. As we celebrate of 114th anniversary of our freedom, let us be reminded that on that fateful day in Kawit, Cavite a group of brave men and a few women waved our flag in defiance of the Spanish colonial rule and by so doing imposed upon themselves and their own “death sentences”. With somber thoughts we would love to remember them and their sacrifices. As we appreciate our lingering moments in this great land, we too are reminded of the struggles of the American revolution: “Give me liberty, or give me death” was the thunderous response of patriot Patrick Henry to the British call to lay down their arms. The American civil war claimed the lives of almost a million Americans! Too much to pay for freedom but it was worth it. To these brave men and women, let us faithfully remember their struggles as we learn to appreciate the freedoms that we have today. Mabuhay tayong lahat! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! Mabuhay and America!

Ana Katrina Para sa mahal kong kapamilya, kamag- anak at mga kababayan: Mabuhay po kayong lahat! I am truly blessed to be born on April 5, 1995 to my lovely parents Eufemio and Analiza wih my two wonderful younger siblings Elysa and Marco in our humble place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am currently on my Junior year at Delran, New Jersey where we have moved more than 10 years ago. My father is originally from Casiguran Quezon and my mom is from Pagbilao Quezon. Not to confused you all but one state is South and the other is North and both have two different dialects, a Casiguranin and a Tagalog both of which until now I hardly speak and understand but I am trying my best because I love my Filipino language. Since childhood, I have been fortunately surrounded by my Filipinoroots and heritage. We have a large family consisting of 13 siblings in my father side and 4 siblings in my mother side with an unimaginable size of hundreds in all but I really enjoy it. One of my favorite traditions is taking the hand of the elders and saying “mano po” and always not to forget the words “opo” and “salamat po”. We always joined the Santacruzan/ Flores de Mayo every year commemorating the importance of our faith. I also love watching boxing with my favorite best fighter of all times Manny Pacquiao. I enjoyed listening to Filipino music and watching movies. Last but not the least, every Filipino’s favorites are the famous delicacies of lechon and halo-halo. I have been in the Philippines two times, although it’s few but it’s very memorable as well as an emotional experience for me. I still have vivid memories not only of the great things I have seen but also of the worst things I have observed. I remember children without shoes wearing filthy clothings and selling flowers in the streets and others were begging for money, I also saw pieces of woods and metals all put in together to make a house to live in for a family of two, and a lot more sad things that I will never forget. Seeing all of this makes me realize how lucky I am to have an opportunity to be well provided for by my hardworking parents. Being brought up in a way that we learn how to appreciate the simplest things in life is precious. I was hoping that someday I will be able to go back in the Philippines and share everything that I have. I am planning to join the Air Force in the future and be a doctor at the same time. Now, given the chance to be the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 I wanted to fulfill the mission of the organiza-

tion with the vision of ” giving back”. I know that the organizations will fully support me and they will stay united for one purpose and that is to help our Filipino community. My heartfelt gratitude to my parents and family for the unconditional love, trust, guidance and support as I prepare myself to meet life’s challenges. Special thanks to FECGP especially the dedicated President Hermie Aczon, the officers and committee members for this great experience as being selected to be Bb. Pilipinas and to all the Filipino organizations for making this event a success. I hope that I will be able to give inspiration to the youth as the mission continues…. I would like to end my message with a quote from my favorite Philippine National Hero- Dr. Jose Rizal; “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan”. Maraming Salamat Po! Lubos na gumagalang, Ana Katrina Pena Guerrero Bb. Pilipinas 2012 of FECGP

And summoning as witness of the rectitude of our intentions, the Supreme Judge of the Universe, and under the protection of the Mighty and Humane North American Nation, we proclaim and solemnly declare in the name of and by the authority of the inhabitants of all these Philippine Islands, thot. they are and have a right to be free and independent; that they are released from all obedience to the crown of Spain; that every political tie between the two is and must be completely severed and annulled; and that like all free and independent states, they have complete authority to make war, conclude peace, establish treaties of commerce, enter into alliances, regulate commerce, and execute all other acts and things that independent States have the right to do. Reposing firm confidence in the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge for the support of this declaration our lives, our fortunes, and our most sacred possession, which is our honor. We acknowledge, approve and confirm, together with the orders that have been issued therefrom, the Dictatorship established by Don Emilio Aguinaldo, whom we honor as the Supreme Chief of the nation, which this day commences to have a life of its own, in the belief that he is the instrument selected by God, in spite of his humble origin, to effect the redemption of this unfortunate people, as foretold by Doctor Jose Rizal in the magnificent verses which he composed when he was preparing to be shot, liberating them from the yoke of Spanish domination in punishment of the impunity with which their Government allowed the commission of abuses by its subordinates; and for the unjust execution of said Rizal and others who were sacrificed to please the greedy body of friars in their insatiable desire to seek revenge upon and exterminate all those who are opposed to their Machiavellian purposes, which tramples upon the penal code prescribed for these islands; and for the sake of these persons who, though merely suspected, where convicted by the Commanders of the detachments at the instigation of the friars without form or semblance of a trial and without spiritual consolation afforded by their sacred religion.

June 12, 1898 must have been a very momentous day in Kawit, Cavite and for the entire country. One can only speculate on how fast and in what manner the event got disseminated from Cavite and beyond. General Emilio Aguinaldo was glorious and very proud of this accomplishment. The Act of the Declaration of Independence proclaimed the end of Spanish colonial rule of our country. Neither Spain nor the United States recognized the declaration, and Apolinario Mabini anticipated correctly that our country would be under the protection of the United Sates. The Treaty of Manila was struck, and on July 4, 1946 the United States finally recognized our independence, 48 years hence. A reflection on the history of what happened 114 years ago makes us humble and makes us appreciate the significance of our heroes. They struggled against massive odds, equipped only with meager resources, perhaps hindered by their personal agenda, but ultimately came through for love of country. Love of country is absolute and is the common denominator that will guide all Filipinos, here and "abroad", to move our country forward and improve the lot of every citizen. The task ahead for our country is heavy, as every other country globally struggles through tough recessionary times. The FECGP and the member organizations should be commended and congratulated vociferously for their continuing efforts to band together and help improve our community. The beauty of the chosen Binibining Pilipinas, 2012 should give us joy and hope for the future‌ she represents all our children, our future. We freely give platitudes whenever they are called for; hard work and dedication are encouraged and should be fostered freely. We owe our national heroes a debt of gratitude, and each other, likewise. J. March Maquilan President, PMSGP
