From inspiring presentations to people-first leadership lessons, this event set the bar high for how chapters can impact our industry.

The first Thornton Fence Consulting Group (TFCG) Standard of Excellence Awards were presented at the Summit, to recognize those who are lifting up and setting new levels of excellence in the fence industry. Founder Tony Thornton established the award as a way of saying, "Well Done, Much Appreciated and We See You," as he approaches 50 years of industry engagement in 2026. Recipients were Sherman Leibow, CFO with Anvil Fence, and Rachel Kroese, general manager with mySalesman.

How Fence Companies Can SUPPORT AND EMPOWER VETERANS

As the fencing industry continues to grow, finding skilled, dependable employees has become one of the biggest challenges for company owners and managers. One powerful, often overlooked workforce solution is hiring and supporting U.S. military veterans.

Veterans bring unmatched leadership, teamwork, discipline, and technical know-how, qualities which align perfectly with the demands of construction, fabrication, logistics, and fieldwork. Yet many veterans leave service without accessing the full range of benefits they’ve earned, often due to the complexity of the VA system.

That’s where organizations such as Veterans Benefits Advisors step in to help veteran employees thrive.

UNDERSTANDING VA DISABILITY COMPENSATION

Veterans can receive significant advantages by applying for VA Disability Compensation, a cornerstone program that provides monthly tax-free payments for service-connected illnesses or injuries. These payments are designed to offset the lasting impact of conditions that began or worsened during military service. Beyond the monthly financial support, veterans who qualify also gain access to a range of additional benefits, including free or lowcost VA health care, vocational rehabilitation, housing assistance, and federal employment preference.

Applying for VA Disability Compensation is not just about receiving a monthly payment, it’s about securing a pathway to better health, financial well-being, and long-term success for those who have served our country.

HOW VETERANS BENEFITS ADVISORS CAN HELP

From reviewing existing ratings to preparing documentation for new or secondary conditions, Veteran Benefits Advisors can help provide a roadmap to guide veterans through the VA claims process so they can receive the maximum disability rating they deserve.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR FENCE INDUSTRY EMPLOYERS

Supporting veterans isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a smart business decision. When veterans feel supported and valued, they tend to stay longer with their employers and perform at higher levels, improving overall retention and morale. Ensuring that veterans receive the benefits and ratings they deserve also helps reduce financial stress, allowing them to focus on their work and personal growth.

Additionally, companies recognized as veteran-friendly employers gain a positive brand image within their communities, which enhances their reputation and strengthens recruiting efforts. There are also tangible advantages, such as eligibility for federal tax incentives like the Work Opportunity Tax Credit for hiring veterans. By partnering with organizations that assist veterans, fence companies can foster a workplace culture built on loyalty, trust, and mutual respect.

The fencing industry is built on craftsmanship, dedication, and integrity, the same qualities that define our nation’s veterans. By connecting employees with a trusted benefits consultant from Veterans Benefits Advisors, fence companies can transform veterans’ lives, strengthen teams, and build a reputation as an employer that truly cares about the well-being of its veteran employees.

Soft Light Glow Illuminates Visitors

Wood fencing continues to set the standard for strength, beauty and versatility. In this section, we explore the materials, treatments and techniques that help contractors deliver fences built to last by combining natural durability with modern performance.

COLOR-TREATED LUMBER:

Long-Lasting Beauty from Day One

The fall and early winter months are a great time to replace or install a new fence, taking advantage of milder weather conditions and consumers who elect to avoid the busy season in spring. As residential fence projects continue to be tasked with finding the perfect marriage of form and function, here’s a consideration that contractors should add to their list. How much value can I add for my clients by offering color-treated wood as an option?

“Like any outdoor project, fence builds that offer longevity, great aesthetics, and require minimal to no upkeep are rightly coveted by the consumer,” shares Ashley VanderWall, brand marketing manager at ProWood. “It starts with utilizing building materials that are ready to weather the climate and conditions you’re installing them in, which is why pressure-treated wood is a leading choice among consumers. But there are even more robust solutions within the treated category that can give homeowners a fence that’s ready to enjoy on day one.”

Color-treated lumber takes the long-term benefits of pressure-treated products and elevates them to another level. This means that fence boards still benefit from the enhanced protection against rot and decay provided by modern preservative treating technologies such as micronized copper azole (MCA), but then go a step further by being color-infused with pigment that reaches deep into the wood fibers.

With color-treated wood, contractors take fences across the finish line as soon as they’re completed, removing the need for homeowners to invest additional time and money into the maintenance of routine staining and sealing. It’s ready to enjoy the moment the job is done.

The enthusiasm around the opportunities that color-treated wood creates isn’t felt by the end consumer alone, as VanderWall is well aware. “When we talk to contractors who have used these products, they have a strong sense of pride in knowing that those builds won’t result in a callback. Most of the time, they’ve established a relationship with the client and will check in on their fence weeks later. When they see a build that already looks dependable and vibrant, it instills further peace of mind that they’re doing good business.”

Before getting to the finished project, it’s essential to acknowledge some best practices for color-treated fences along with the options consumers can choose from to create their desired appearance. When selecting hardware and accessories, it’s best to employ galvanized steel materials for these parts, as the zinc coating provides a protective layer against the copperbased preservative that the wood is treated with, which can be corrosive to other metals. As for the options consumers have for various color tones, it’s important to check with the supplier to see what’s available in your area. “ProWood

offers color-treated lumber in Redwood, Walnut, and Cedar tones,” VanderWall explains, “but the availability of these options can be affected by your region. And with color-treated wood, you can still change course and stain the fence a different color than the one you purchased.”

Lastly, she accounts for the unseen benefits that are felt down the road. With environmentally conscious building practices becoming an important factor in material selection, it shouldn’t be overlooked that color-treated products are often made with safe, non-toxic colorants. “Our color-treated lumber is certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Global Services as an Environmentally Preferred Product (EPP) because the pigment is infused through an MCA treatment that’s 99% water-based,” says VanderWall. “It’s also backed by an industry-leading color assurance limited warranty, which provides five years of coverage for vertical applications, such as use in fence projects—promising that the rich appearance of your color-treated fence won’t lose its luster.”

BPWood Brings First Ignition Resistant Saferwood Thermowood® Ayous and Thermowood Nordic Pine to the North American Market

BPWood in partnership with SaferWood Thermex-FR, has announced its ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine successfully passed independent third-party testing to achieve Class A ignition resistant status per ASTM E2768 (E84 30-minutes) after ASTM D2898 Accelerated Weathering; the first available in North America.

BPWood supplies ThermoWood to North America in partnership with LDCwood, a member of the International ThermoWood Association.

SaferWood with Thermex-FR by Chemco, Inc., is a one-time permanent fireretardant pressure treatment to all surfaces as required by IBC 2303.2, which renders natural and thermally modified wood ignition resistant. Approved for exterior use per IWUIC 503.2, in residential and commercial design and construction, in all WUI designated and FHSV zones.

BPWood's ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine with SaferWood Thermex-FR are ignition resistant, appearance grade, exterior FRTW code compliant alternatives to non-combustible materials.

"Our goal was to prove our fire-retardant technology created in 1981 could be applied to contemporary materials and we accomplished that goal," says J. Travis Owens, chief business development officer at SaferWood. "BPWood's products were subjected to the same rigorous independent third-party laboratory ASTM testing as other species and performed exceptionally well.

We are pleased to add ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine to our ICC ESR-1159 and QAI CERus-1031 reports."

“The mix of sustainable species, proven ThermoWood modification, strong appearance, and Class A ignition resistance makes this a standout for cladding and decking,” says Chris Bouchard, sales lead at BPWood.

BPWood has positioned supply to meet demand through its partnership with SaferWood, with profile samples and listing reports (ICC ESR-1159 and QAI CERus-1031) available upon request.

These developments open a new path for builders, designers, and distributors by making ThermoWood Ayous and Nordic Pine available with code-compliant options for interior and select exterior applications, subject to local requirements and project specifications. Profiles are offered for cladding, decking, rainscreen, and soffit projects, with options including square edge, tongue-and-groove, and rainscreen patterns.

With these results, BPWood becomes the exclusive North American source for fire-rated ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine, strengthening its leadership in sustainable, high-performance wood solutions.

For decades, American Timber and Steel Corp. (ATS) has been a leading manufacturer and supplier of pressure-treated wood fence posts designed to meet the demanding needs of the agricultural industry. “From small farms to large ranch operations, our posts form the backbone of reliable fencing systems across the United States,” says Steve Adelman, ATS Vice President.

BUILT FOR AGRICULTURE. BUILT TO LAST.

ATS’s treated wood fence posts are engineered for strength, stability, and long-term performance in the field. Every post is pressure-treated using proven preservatives to protect against decay, insect damage, and harsh environmental conditions. Adelman says farmers and ranchers rely on ATS posts because they:

“Whether for livestock containment, property boundaries, or crop protection, ATS treated posts deliver durability that stands the test of time,” Adelman adds.

THE RIVER ELECTRIC FEATURING REDWOOD

The River Electric is a camp resort, swim club, and event venue in the heart of Sonoma County wine country. Set on 12 acres of sunny meadows and redwood groves, The River Electric is a short walk from the historic town of Guerneville, California. Offering 40 luxurious tent campsites, two pools, and three event spaces, the property offers a relaxing and sophisticated escape for visitors.

The owners chose redwood for the wood features, including the fencing, both because it is natural to their location and also for its strength and resilience. Few other building materials display the combination of beauty, warmth, durability and versatility inherent in real redwood. Redwood is also an all-natural, renewable resource. The rich color of redwood is legendary. Every redwood board is unique, oneof-a-kind. Such distinction cannot be matched by man-made, alternative products. Additionally, redwood is inherently durable. Redwood heartwood is naturally resistant to insects and decay. Redwood has excellent “dimensional

stability,” which means that it shrinks and swells less than other woods when exposed to water. The weather in the region can be extremely wet or extremely hot and dry, depending on the season. Redwood can withstand the elements and retain its beauty.

Common areas of the resort include the welcome building, on-site restaurant and bar, and bath building which are outfitted with beautiful Heart B grade redwood siding. Cabanas in the pool area also feature redwood timber framing, and durable redwood decking can be found on the event spaces within the nearby grove of mature redwood trees. The patio space sheltering the restaurant and bar features a large shade structure, the posts of which are steel that have been wrapped in redwood to match the overall aesthetic of the property.

Sited in a Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zone, nearly all the construction materials specified for The River Electric had to be approved for use per California Building Code Chapter 7A. Redwood

decking and siding are eligible for use under the existing code and are fully compliant with the new 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC), which becomes effective January 1, 2026.

“Redwood is integral to what we decided to do here to enhance this landscape. Your entire view is of massive redwoods. And being able to use redwood just completely blends this space and makes it feel like it’s been here forever,” says Michael Gibson, The River Electric’s operating partner.

Redwood is available from the Mendocino Companies, which own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C013133) certified redwood and Douglas-fir timberlands in Northern California. The Mendocino Companies selectively harvest trees for manufacture into durable lumber and timbers. The company grows more trees annually than it harvests. To learn more, visit MendoCo.com

MATERIAL STRENGTH DEFINES WOOD FENCE PERFORMANCE

When it comes to building fences that last, material strength makes all the difference.

From their facility in Summertown, Tennessee, Old South Wood Preserving, LLC, a proud, family-owned business, has earned a reputation for producing both tapered and perfect fence posts that are as durable as they are attractive.

Old South Wood’s philosophy is simple: they don’t sell products they wouldn’t use themselves. Only the highest-quality Southern Yellow Pine logs are accepted to mill their fence posts, and extra care is taken to ensure each one not only looks great but is properly treated before being shipped to customers.

At their facility, Old South Wood operates two treating cylinders used to pressure-treat materials with either MCA (Micronized Copper Azole) or CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate). Every treatment charge is tested to verify proper chemical penetration.

“It’s not required that we test every charge, but it only takes five minutes,” explains general manager Mark Jent. “If a batch ships out that wasn’t treated right, and we could’ve prevented it, that’s a shame.”

While the company supplies everything from dimensional lumber to heavy timbers, Jent says it’s their fencing materials that have drawn growing interest from both local and out-of-state contractors.

In addition to fence posts, Old South Wood provides fence boards in multiple species and sizes, allowing customers to order complete project materials on a single truckload. Whether it’s for privacy fences, farm fences, or decorative installations, customers trust Old South Wood for consistent, high-quality results every time.

From raw timber to finished fence boards, Jent says every product reflects the company’s hands-on craftsmanship and Southern work ethic. Their proximity to regional fence builders and distributors allows them to offer responsive service and custom solutions that larger, national suppliers often can’t match.

This balance of craftsmanship and capability has positioned Old South Wood Preserving as a go-to partner for contractors who view fences as creative expressions, not just construction.

“In an era where outdoor living has become an extension of the home, details matter,” Jent adds. “Our fencing materials help define those details, creating fences that are as polished as they are practical.”

SMART WOOD FENCES

TRADITIONAL

WOOD FENCES VS

Which Is Right for Your Next Project?

Wood fencing just got a major upgrade. While traditional wood fences have been the go-to choice for decades, smart wood fencing is changing the game by combining classic aesthetics with cutting- edge technology. But which one's right for your next project?

WHAT MAKES A WOOD FENCE "SMART"?

According to Mike DeLorenzo, CEO of FENCEGPT, an AIpowered fence specialist software, smart wood fences aren't just about looks: they're packed with tech that makes life easier. “Think integrated sensors that detect intrusions, AI-powered maintenance monitoring that sends notifications when it’s time for repairs, and smart locks controlled from a phone.”

He says these systems can send alerts when someone's climbing your fence, monitor weather damage in real time, and even integrate with your existing security setup. “It’s amazing technology and some features are even readily available to integrate into your lives now," DeLorenzo adds.

TRADITIONAL WOOD FENCES: STILL GOT IT

But DeLorenzo, a thirdgeneration fencing professional, says it’s not time to count out traditional wood fences just yet. “They're affordable, versatile, and give that timeless look that never goes out of style. You can paint them, stain them, or leave them natural: whatever matches your vibe.”

For contractors, traditional wood fences are straightforward to install, require minimal specialized training, and have readily available materials. “Many clients love the classic appeal, and contractors often love the predictable workflow,” adds DeLorenzo.

REAL TALK COMPARISON

DeLorenzo offers a comparison of smart versus traditional wood fences and advice on choosing:

SMART WOOD FENCES:

• Higher upfront cost but better long-term value

• Perfect for tech-savvy homeowners and high-security areas

• Requires electrical work and ongoing tech maintenance

• Great selling point for premium projects

TRADITIONAL WOOD FENCES:

• Budget-friendly and quick to install

• No technical complications or power requirements

• Easier to repair with standard materials

• Appeals to a broader client base

Go smart if: Your client wants top-tier security, loves tech integration, and has the budget for it. These work great for urban properties, vacation homes, or anywhere security is a priority.

Stick traditional if: Budget's tight, the client prefers simplicity, or you're working in areas with limited power access. They're still the bread and butter for most residential projects.

DeLorenzo says both options have their place in today's market. Smart wood fences are perfect for premium projects where technology adds real value. Traditional wood fences remain reliable workhorses for most residential jobs. “The key,” he advises, “is matching the fence to your client's needs, not just the latest trends. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest one.”

How a SolarPowered Gate Secured a Busy Roadside Property Case Study

In suburban neighborhoods along busy roadways, safety and convenience are just as important as maintaining curb appeal and a welcoming property design. Michael and Bobbie Adams faced this exact challenge: they wanted the freedom to let their dogs roam the front yard, but without the risk of them running into traffic. At the same time, they needed a gate solution that blended with their ranch-style fencing, offered the flexibility for guests to easily drive out, could stay open for deliveries when needed—and avoided the cost or disruption of trenching 200 feet for electricity.

Adding to the concern, their property sat along a curvy, fast-moving road with no streetlights, where drivers often missed the nearby access road and mistakenly turned into their driveway to turn around. The couple wanted a solution that prioritized safety for both their family and passing motorists.

ENTER A TRUSTED INSTALLER WITH A SMART APPROACH

For this project, installer Dani Osadchy of Access Masters, Inc. in San Diego, California, fabricated a custom wrought iron slide gate designed to seamlessly match the property’s ranch fencing. To ensure longevity, the gate was both galvanized and powder coated. But the real differentiator came from pairing the gate with the Nice Juno Solar Slide Gate Operator—a compact, solarpowered solution perfect for the homeowner’s needs.

“With a 20-watt solar panel, the Juno operator provided the power and reliability we needed, all while avoiding expensive trenching,” Osadchy explains. “It was the ideal solution for a gate that was installed on a long driveway, far from the electrical panel.”

FROM DESIGN TO DEPLOYMENT

Planning played a critical role in the installation’s success. A concrete pad was poured several days before installation to allow proper curing. The conduit for the probe and solar panel was set into the pad ahead of time, enabling the operator and accessories to be installed in just a few hours.

The final system designed included:

• Juno Solar Slide Gate Operator powered by a 20-watt solar panel.

• Internally mounted photo eyes for enhanced safety and clean aesthetics.

• Diablo exit probe to allow guests to exit without additional remotes or keypads.

By internally mounting the photo eyes, the team kept the look clean and unobtrusive. And with the exit probe, guests could leave the property easily while the homeowner retained full control of access.

“The solar option was perfect–it gave us exactly what we wanted without extra hassles or cost.”

A SECURE, FLEXIBLE SYSTEM

For the homeowner, the transformation was immediate:

Peace of Mind: Dogs can safely enjoy the yard without risk of reaching the busy road.

Traffic Safety: The gate prevents vehicles from mistakenly turning into the driveway to use it as a turnaround.

Guest-Friendly: Visitors can drive out easily without extra hassle.

Delivery Ready: The gate can be kept open when needed to accept packages or service calls.

Cost Savings: Solar eliminated the need for trenching–avoiding both expense and disruption.

Nighttime Visibility: The Juno’s integrated driveway light provided added security in an area with no streetlights.

Quiet Operation: After a month of daily use, the homeowners emphasized how quiet the operator is in action.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This project demonstrates how solar-powered access solutions can solve realworld challenges without compromise and additional cost. In places where trenching isn’t practical—or where sustainability is top of mind—the Nice Juno operator proves that reliable automation can be both discreet and powerful.

“Homeowners don’t want to choose between safety, convenience, and aesthetics,” says Lisa Steinberg, senior product manager at Nice North America. “Solutions like Juno bring it all together, quietly enhancing daily life with dependable performance.”

Throughout the home’s outdoor spaces, Trex® decking, railing and outdoor lighting systems elevate the desert retreat with durability, functionality and sleek aesthetics that complement the rugged yet refined surroundings.

PERFORMANCE-ENGINEERED™ PRODUCTS FOR DESERT PERFORMANCE

Trex Transcend® Lineage® composite decking sits outside each room and surrounds the pool of the home situated in the iconic Desert Palisades community. Featuring the brand’s exclusive SunComfortable™ heat-mitigating technology, the deck boards are engineered to reflect more solar energy, keeping the surface cooler* than ever before – a welcome benefit in Palm Springs, which gets more than 350 days of sunshine annually.

Lineage boards are also engineered with a proprietary, high-traffic formulation and ultra-durable integrated shell that resists stains, scratches and

mold. They won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter like wood, and upkeep is a breeze. No sanding, staining or sealing is ever needed, and spills wash off easily with just soap and water.

The soft brown Biscayne hue of the decking adds warmth and dimension to the home’s minimalist aesthetic, while the natural woodgrain finish complements the surrounding landscape. Recessed deck lighting offers added ambiance and functionality for evening relaxation and entertaining.

Framing the outdoor living spaces is Trex Signature® X-Series™ Cable Rail in Charcoal Black. This modern railing system blends seamlessly with the home’s architecture while maximizing the panoramic views of the Coachella Valley.

A MODEL FOR ECO-CONSCIOUS DESIGN

Beyond embodying the enduring principles of modernist design, the 2025 Sunset Idea House exemplifies environmentally responsible living – a core value shared by both Sunset and Trex. Trex decking is sustainably made from a proprietary blend of up to 95% recycled polyethylene film and reclaimed wood fiber. The company diverts more than 1 billion pounds of these materials from landfills each year. Additionally, the aluminum railing used at the home is made from 40% recycled content and is fully recyclable.

The 2025 Idea House is featured in the July/August issue of Sunset Magazine and on the magazine’s website. To learn more about the Trex products featured in this project, visit Trex.com

NANOTECH MATERIALS, INC.

TACKLES ESCALATING WILDFIRE THREAT HEAD-ON with New Wildfire Shield to Protect Critical Infrastructure

As wildfires grow more intense and destructive, NanoTech Materials, Inc. has introduced Wildfire Shield, a non-toxic, high-temperature resistant thermal coating that withstands temperatures up to 1,800°C (3,272°F) to protect critical wooden infrastructure from fire. Designed to protect wood timber lagging, the primary building product in retaining walls, highway bridges, and other exposed wooden structures, Wildfire Shield protects critical outdoor wooden infrastructure from becoming fuel for wildfires—buying time for emergency response and evacuation.

Already deployed on highway projects for the California Department of Transportation, the largest DOT in the nation, Wildfire Shield has demonstrated its ability to fortify timber lagging shoring systems. While timber is favored for its low cost and quick installation, its vulnerability to wildfire damage forces agencies into frequent and expensive replacements. Wildfire Shield treated structures enable the continued use of wood timber lagging in critical DOT infrastructure projects while keeping vital infrastructure standing when fires hit.

“Departments of Transportation (DOTs), municipalities, and utilities are facing growing pressures to safeguard roads, bridges, and power infrastructure against fires,” says Mike Francis, CEO of NanoTech Materials, Inc. “Traditional solutions like concrete are costly and slow to install, while untreated wood remains highly flammable. Wildfire Shield provides a cost-effective, scalable alternative—preserving the affordability and rapid deployment of timber while reinforcing it with proven fire resistance.”

CalTrans is one of several DOTs migrating towards soldier pile wood timber lagging construction materials and methods to expedite construction schedules for emergency projects. This approach was implemented to shore up earth along California highways impacted by wildfires. To date, NanoTech Wildfire Shield has been successfully applied to thousands of feet of California Highway retention walls, enhancing the fire protection of California highway infrastructure.

and expansion when they come into contact with open flame. While this charring process insulates against the heat, protecting the underlying wood, the process releases toxic chemicals into the air. These chemicals add to the toxicity of the smoke, endangering our first responders and those fleeing an active fire. During the time it takes for these coatings to reach their working temperature, heat can penetrate and ignite the wood underneath before the protective process even begins,” says Troy Marshall, vice president of fire, NanoTech Materials, Inc. “Wildfire Shield is different—it works immediately at any temperature, releasing no toxic chemicals into the atmosphere during an active fire situation and withstanding longer and hotter temperatures than current solutions. Wildfire Shield ensures real-world resilience for infrastructure that can’t afford to fail.”

NanoTech Materials is launching the Wildfire Shield Product through a nationwide applicator program, a playbook with which the company has had success in the rapid deployment of its thermal coatings lines. This nationwide initiative partners with national coating applicators, heavy construction, and bridge and highway contractors to deploy Wildfire Shield across critical open-air wooden infrastructure in high-risk fire zones. The program already boasts some heavy hitters in national coatings application and heavy construction, including Universal Coatings, GR Sunberg, Valentine Corp., and Idaho Coatings.

STOPPING ROT BEFORE IT STARTS The Smarter Way to Protect Wood Fence Posts

When it comes to wood fence longevity, rot doesn’t start in the air, it starts in the ground. That’s why Fence Armor® developed RotGuard™, a nextgeneration, Made-in-USA membrane wrap that prevents rot where it begins: the vulnerable top six inches below ground.

Even pressure-treated wood can fail over time when exposed to soildwelling fungi, bacteria, and moisture. RotGuard™ forms a durable, air- and water-tight seal right at the ground line where post rot is most likely to occur. And unlike messy tar, chemical sealants, or complicated wraps, RotGuard™ installs in minutes: Peel. Position. Wrap. Seal. Done. No torch. No tools. No mess.

“We believe complete fence protection starts underground,” says Al Martins, director and owner at Fence Armor. “RotGuard™ protects your post investment, reduces wood waste, and helps contractors give their customers longer-lasting fences.”

Backed by a 25-year limited warranty, RotGuard™ is engineered with a long-lasting composite membrane that guards cedar heartwood and pressure-treated posts from early failure. Plus, the included squeegee ensures a tight seal, helping to protect the fence and the environment by reducing premature post replacements.

ROTGUARD™ AT A GLANCE:

• Prevents decay in the first 6” below grade

• Fast and clean install, no special tools required

• Proudly Made in the USA

STAIN, SIMPLIFIED: How Pre-Stain Adds Efficiency &

Profitability

for Fence Contractors

In an industry where weather delays, labor costs, and customer expectations can make or break a schedule, contractors are finding new efficiencies through pre-stained fence materials. For many, it’s a simple shift, or addition, with a major payoff—one that’s redefining how fences, pergolas, and other exterior structures are built.

Through Wood Defender’s Pre-Stain facility, operating out of Mansfield, Texas, for almost 15 years, contractors can now purchase factory-finished pickets and boards through Master Halco, ready for installation the moment they hit the jobsite. The pre-stain process uses the same professional-grade, oil-based formulas trusted in the field, applied under tightly controlled conditions for consistent, uniform coverage and long-term protection.

Build and Protect in One Step

"For contractors, pre-stain means faster installs and fewer variables," explains Roy Branch, director of Wholesale for Wood Defender. “With the stain already applied, there’s no need to schedule around the weather or return to the jobsite for finishing. The boards arrive protected from UV and moisture exposure, allowing crews to work year-round, even in conditions that would normally bring production to a halt. With no overspray or jobsite mess to manage, contractors save time on prep and cleanup while offering homeowners instant curb appeal from day one.”

The Business Case for Pre-Stain

The ability to install and complete a fence in one trip translates directly to higher efficiency, reduced labor, and more opportunities per week. Branch says contractors can deliver a premium, finished look without the added time or expense of on-site staining, helping them take on more jobs and boost profitability without increasing headcount.

Many have found pre-stain to be a valuable way to diversify services, offering customers a “fast-track” option that still meets the same durability and quality standards they expect from a traditional spray application.

Proof in Practice: Magnolia Fence & Patio

Dallas-Fort Worth-based Magnolia Fence & Patio is a prime example of the scalability and benefits of pre-stain in action. The company has made pre-stained wood its standard offering for most residential and commercial projects, citing faster turnaround, high customer satisfaction, and fewer weather disruptions. From fence installations to pergola builds, pre-stain helps crews maintain consistent quality and complete jobs efficiently, all while delivering a finish that looks professional from the first day forward.

Streamlined Supply, Consistent Results

Each board is supplied through Master Halco, then finished at Wood Defender’s facility and distributed back through Master Halco’s network. “This closed-loop process ensures consistent quality, reliable availability, and a seamless experience for fence professionals who value both craftsmanship and convenience,” says Branch. “With pre-stained materials, contractors gain the freedom to build and protect in one step, simplifying their workflow, expanding their season, and delivering a polished result that stands out in any market.”

Interested contractors can learn more or place an order through their local Master Halco representative or reach out to Wood Defender at 800-658-KOTE.

Brent Turner PRESIDENT, WOOD DEFENDER with

For more than two decades, Brent Turner has helped build the reputation of Wood Defender into one of the most trusted names in the industry. What began as a hands-on role in the early days of the company has evolved into a career defined by innovation, customer relationships and a deep understanding of what it takes to protect and preserve wood in the fencing industry. His career reflects a simple but powerful philosophy: when you take pride in the details, the finish always shows it. He shared details of his career path with Fence News, as well as a look at what’s ahead for Wood Defender.

How did Wood Defender begin?

I grew up with my family in Tyler, Texas, and my dad, Mel Turner, was in the self-service car wash business. After the recession in the early 80s and the introduction of full-service drive-through car washes, my family went broke. My dad was in Dallas looking for a job when he read an ad in the classifieds for a small paint company looking to sell. He sold every possession he had and borrowed money from his uncle to purchase Standard Paints, Inc. in 1988. At that time, Standard Paints, Inc. manufactured paint for zone marking, house paint and a few light industrial coatings. I often accompanied him to the plant during summers to help with labeling cans, sweeping floors and packaging paint. In high school, I had a business detailing cars and was undecided about attending a university. I enrolled in community college for a semester, and then went to Stephen F. Austin University for a semester. My dad suggested I work that summer staining fences. He got the idea to make some stain at the plant and have me stain his fence, then sell the service to his neighbors. I called my best friend from Coppell High School, Todd Steen, now our senior vice president of sales and marketing, to see if he wanted to work with me. The first fence we stained was my parents’, and it did not go as expected. The first product we made would not soak in evenly and the entire fence required back brushing, an all-day effort. We knew there had to be a better way. Starting off, we would sell a job, try a new version of the stain formula, spend all day back brushing, then repeat. After maybe a dozen tries we found the formula that most closely represents what we make today—a stain that can be applied with a single flood coat

that and soaks into the wood, leaving a uniform finish without runs, drips or lap marks. The performance of the product was encouraging and completely changed the game. Instead of spraying one fence a day, we could now complete multiple jobs a day. We named our business Coppell Stain and Seal, got my mom to help us keep our books and spent the summer staining fences as fast as we could. When fall came, I continued the fence staining business and re-enrolled in community college. Todd and I stained fences through the winter and into the next summer.

As we became more successful, other contractors began noticing our product. A competitor called asking about our stain. He had tried everything available and couldn’t match it. We offered to sell him product and he became our first fence stain customer. I began calling every competitor I had to sell them product. In the fall of 1996, Todd left his fence staining career to complete his education, I was selling stain, staining fences and going to school. I decided to join Standard Paints, Inc. full-time and make my career selling paint. Our business grew and in 1999 we moved from downtown Dallas to the location in Mansfield, where we still operate today. However, American manufacturing was shifting overseas, and this impacted our business. I knew something had to change, and when I got a message from Sunnyvale Fence asking for information about staining fences, I took this as a sign to put all of our eggs in the fence stain basket.

I asked Todd to leave his corporate job to join me at Standard. That’s when we started to develop what would become Wood Defender into a fullscale product line and business opportunity.

What core values or principals have guided you throughout your career?

Hard work, honesty and consistency. We built Wood Defender the same way you build a fence; one board at a time. Relationships matter just as much as the product itself. We answer the phone; we stand behind every gallon we make and we treat our customers like family. The smallest details are often the most important. There is no fast track to success that has ever been available to me.

What sets Wood Defender apart from other stain and seal products?

We came up with the term “stain and seal” and used it in the name of our original application company to better describe in our business name what we were offering. Now, we’ve been in this industry for over 30 years, and manufacture all of our products from raw materials with the same consistency and stringent quality control methods used for top quality, precise and technical industrial coatings for demanding markets. We have the technology, resources and a team of experienced professionals to create, manufacture and support the products we sell. We relate to our customers because we were our customers. Todd, Roy Branch, director of wholesale, and I have all stained fences to provide our income, so we understand our customers’ challenges. We don’t just sell stain, we help build businesses by offering training classes to help contractors get started.

How has Wood Defender evolved to meet changing customer needs and market trends? Innovation is constant. We have expanded our training programs, grown our nationwide network of contractors, distributors and retailers and keep refining our product for better performance, including easier clean up and longevity. As environmental standards and awareness have changed we have stayed ahead of VOC regulations without sacrificing the performance professionals expect. We’ve leaned into education. We are big on giving contractors not just a great product, but also the tools and knowledge to succeed long term.

How do you balance tradition with new product development?

We are constantly innovating to make sure we stay on top. We have a workforce with a tremendous tenure in the industry to know what constants must remain, and we have relationships with contractors that give us feedback on what is required to remain the leader in the industry. Our lab is led by Alix Stevenson, vice president of research & development, and she is one of the brightest chemists in the paint and coatings industry. She studied and worked in California before relocating to Texas so she is very familiar with environmental concerns and regulations that must be met to operate and excel in today’s market. She has been instrumental in maintaining, exceeding and even setting industry standards. At the same time, we stay grounded in what made Wood Defender great: simple systems that work, reliable stain that performs and relationships built on trust.

What have been some of the biggest challenges that you have faced?

Honestly, the biggest challenge we ever faced was convincing fence companies to stain fences. I

remember going to New Orleans for FENCETECH around 2004 for the first time. Not many fence companies were interested in staining fences. Most felt it was too difficult to add the service to their business, even though they were being asked about it and were passing on that work. We had to use our first-hand experience, rely on the ease of use of our product, build equipment better suited for the job and start offering a monthly training class to show them how to get it done efficiently, effectively and without a mess. It really opened the eyes of fence companies when they could learn how to get started in just one day. As more fences were stained, more homeowners saw and desired stained fences and the fence staining industry grew.

What trends do you see shaping the future of wood staining?

Pre-stained fencing has the opportunity to change the market completely. Standard Paints operates a pre-stain facility where we stain 15-20 thousand pieces of fence material daily to supply the DFW market. We build our own application equipment and are just now beginning to offer pre-stain equipment built for high scale production. In the DFW market it is now uncommon to see a fence go up raw. This is a trend I expect to see grow across the country. Not only do we operate our pre-stain plant but we also have partnered with Alta Forest Products to offer Wood Defender on fence materials at the mill level of production. The pre-stain services we offer in Mansfield are exclusive to Master Halco and logistics currently keep us limited to the DFW area. We are hoping to see more pre-stained fencing in distributors’ yards across the country with the better availability.

What has been your proudest achievement so far?

I love seeing the fence staining market grow! I love seeing an area where it used to be uncommon to see a stained fence turn into an area where nearly every fence is stained. In saying that, my proudest achievement is the team we have built at Standard Paints to support the Wood Defender effort. To think what started off so small now has the opportunity to attract the best talent in the industry. We have had the unique ability to hand select a team, grow and learn from each other and share in each other’s success as well as support our failures. Though no one working every day is related by blood anymore, we are all a family. It has been an experience I could never replace.

How has the company grown in recent years?

We have expanded our contractor network, grown our distributor base and continued to reinvest in R&D, training and personnel. The Mansfield facilities have grown with us, and we have made major upgrades to increase production capacities and efficiency. Looking ahead, we are focused on doing what we do best: ensuring Wood Defender continues to set the standard for exterior oil-based stains.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?

The relationships and the people are incredible. My very best friends are people I see every day at work, and I have always said our best customers are also our friends. When you work with people you believe in and who also believe in you, good things happen. When you have fun at your job working with, and for, people you love, it seems a lot less like work. If everyone here has the same goals, sees the same vision and applies themselves every day to the common ambition, continued on page 50

then there is nothing we can’t accomplish. Wood Defender is a testament to that statement in my life. The fence industry is filled with good, hardworking people. Getting to know folks from around the country at trade shows, at our training classes and through our retail network has been a blessing and an inspiration, not to mention a good time! I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the salt of the earth.

Were there mentors along the way who influenced your success?

My dad taught me so many things: What it means to run a business with integrity; how to build our price structure to include a distributor opportunity before we ever needed it but were ready when we did; whoever is sweeping the floor is just as important as who is signing the checks; you can do something right or you can do it twice; a half effort takes longer than doing it right the first time; just to name a few. He also gave me the opportunity to make my own mistakes and learn from them. There are days he is the last person I want to hear from and days where he is the first call I make. The man laid it all on the line so each of us at Standard Paints has a job today.

And Todd—he has been a friend and sounding board for over 30 years. He is a straight shooter and not afraid to hear the truth nor speak it. We have learned a lot together and the experiences we have shared have shaped us both as leaders.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in this industry? Start small, sell one stain job, complete it and sell the next one. Don’t overthink it, there is not a question you can ask we have not heard. Don’t chase quick wins, stay consistent, take the time to do the right thing.

Looking ahead, what are you most excited about?

Seeing the next generation of contractors, chemists, sales, production and leaders rise through the ranks. I have been doing this long enough to see people retire. I used to be the youngest and now have been here the longest. I love to see people added to the team that grab the vision and run. Many of my peers are the same age as me so we have to pass it on if we want it to survive. We have been at this a long time and we are just getting started! Learn more at wooddefender.com

OUTDOOR LIVING TREND REPORT: Trendscapes for 2025

According to recent data, 98% of experts agree that outdoor upgrades impact overall home value, and 56% of experts say homeowners are now willing to invest more in their outdoor spaces. Outdoor living is a priority for homeowners and prospective buyers. Belgard, the leader in outdoor living essentials, and Yardzen, the leading online landscape design platform, have unveiled the 2025 Belgard and Yardzen Trend Report: 2025 Trendscapes that Wow. The report examines collective data on homeowner landscape design preferences and showcases outdoor living space ideas that bring those designs to life.

Blending Belgard’s expertise in premium hardscaping products with Yardzen’s expertise in landscape design, the report identifies outdoor living trends:

PATTERN PLAY PATIO: Graphic Hardscaping Designs – Contrasting paver patterns turn hardscapes into functional artwork while guiding traffic flow through outdoor spaces. Interesting paver patterns can turn a basic patio into a stunning artscape that rivals any indoor flooring design.

URBAN MODULAR LOUNGE: Multi-Functional Outdoor Spaces – Small outdoor spaces must multitask. Using modular materials for built-in benches and planters creates defined, multi-functional spaces, while using large format pavers creates a “bigger-than-it-is" feel.

ELEVATED SIMPLICITY: Monochromatic Paver Designs – Clean lines, oversized slabs and a deliberately restricted color palette create a gallery-calm backdrop that lets outdoor furniture and plant silhouettes shine for a simple yet elegant patio design.

MATERIAL MIXING – With limited square footage, add even more appeal to a small outdoor space by mixing materials. Integrate decking for wall cladding or stone wall veneers to create visual interest and texture variation in compact areas.

MOUNTAIN-MODERN WARMTH: Natural Material Outdoor Spaces – Warm tones are making a comeback. The varied textures and earth-tone color palettes of mountain-modern warmth provide year-round visual interest and help homeowners feel connected to the natural landscape.

“Outdoor living has evolved, and there’s high demand from homeowners for functional, stylish and sustainable landscapes,” says Joe Raboine, vice president of design at Oldcastle APG, parent company of Belgard. “We’re proud to partner with Yardzen to bring data-driven insights and design expertise that can help homeowners, builders and designers stay ahead of the curve on outdoor innovation.”

The report offers the following key takeaways for 2025 outdoor design:

• Pergolas and shade structures are essential for year-round outdoor living.

• Fire features serve as focal points in more than half of all projects.

• Compact pools offer luxury without sacrificing yard space.

• Water features and raised garden beds create multi-sensory experiences.

• Gray pavers remain the most popular choice for their versatility.

• Built-in outdoor kitchens expand entertaining possibilities. Learn more at belgard.com.

System Pavers Unveils

Top Four Outdoor Living Trends for Fall 2025

System Pavers, the nation's expert outdoor living design and installation company, has released the top outdoor living trends for fall. Functionality, comfort, and seasonal style are the main themes for outdoor spaces this as the weather cools, according to the experts at System Pavers, based on sales data and daily conversations with homeowners across various markets.

STRUCTURED OUTDOOR SPACES LEAD THE WAY. Homeowners are designing intentional, well-defined spaces in their backyards by borrowing principles from interior design to purposefully shape the outdoor areas. Fall is an ideal time for outdoor entertaining and dining, prompting the creation of specific zones for outdoor kitchens and barbecues, fire pit lounges, dining areas, and cozy seating. These are predominantly being created under shade structures such as pergolas to form distinct “rooms” in the backyard. Additional interior design elements, like potted plants, rugs, and elevated outdoor furniture, can also make front or backyard spaces feel complete and like genuine extensions of the home.

“The goal is to create a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors,” says Aaron Brundage, director of operations at System Pavers. “Comfort, function, and making the most of your space year-round is what homeowners are really looking for this fall.”

WELLNESS, WARMTH, AND CONNECTION. Design for lifestyle, wellness, and family connection continues to influence outdoor living choices. Yearround entertaining remains a top priority for homeowners and creating spaces that offer warmth and light is essential. Balanced, ambient lighting, fire features, and versatile, comfortable furniture help create welcoming environments that promote gathering, relaxation, and connection throughout the year.

“Creating a hub for holiday traditions and regular gatherings of family and friends is always a nice touch,” says Alec Hoernig, System Pavers’ regional sales

Bull Barn Fence Factory Manufacturing Expansion in Indiana County

development manager in Northern California. “Whether you live in a warm, cool, or cold winter climate state, designing an outdoor space for making memories that last a lifetime is possible with the right choices and expert guidance.”

MOODY HUES. Darker pavers can create a more dramatic look throughout the year. These deep, earthy tones complement the natural surroundings with a bold design, offering a stylish update that’s both timeless and modern. Whether paired with soft lighting or layered with textiles and patterns, darkerhued pavers help craft an intimate, elevated outdoor atmosphere perfect for fall and far beyond.

“Darker, moodier tones in hardscaping are becoming a more popular choice amongst homeowners,” Hoernig says. “These hues add a sophisticated look that works beautifully for the fall and transitions seamlessly into every season.”

PLAN NOW, ENJOY IN SPRING. Fall is one of the best seasons to take on larger outdoor projects, especially for homeowners planning for springtime enjoyment. Thoughtfully integrating planting into outdoor spaces during fall allows homeowners to prepare ahead of time, establishing a foundation that will let them enjoy a completed space by spring

Fall provides homeowners with a unique chance to start building their dream outdoor space before the busy holiday season. "By designing and starting now, homeowners can begin enjoying their space long before the warmer weather arrives," Brundage adds.

Bull Barn Fence Factory, a manufacturer and wholesaler of agricultural and commercial fence, has announced an expansion to nearly double its industrial footprint in five years in Burrell Township, Pennsylvania. The manufacturing facility employs machine operators, packaging and shipping coordinators, as well as sales and office staff, with plans to grow.

Bull Barn Fence Factory, founded in March of 2020, began as a manufacturer of woven wire fence with a target market of livestock farmers. Soon, however, demands for highway fence, hunting and game preserves, and commercial applications such as solar farms and energy installations increased the demand for a larger product line. Bull Barn Fence Factory added a full line of smooth wire, coated wire and barbed wire fence, as well as fence accessories, such as barbed staples, collated staples, connectors, and brace wire. Most recently, Bull Barn Fence has added fence installation equipment, the FastFENCER, an attachment for a tractor or skidsteer that adds efficiency and ease to putting up heavy rolls of woven wire fence.

Bull Barn Fence has benefited from the lifetime of experience in fencing of their founder John McConnell. McConnell grew up on a horse farm, then managed a national distributor of fence products. McConnell’s familiarity with the demands that climate, wildlife, and livestock place on a fence as well as his business acumen have fueled Bull Barn Fence’s rapid growth. After retiring, McConnell partnered with an Australian manufacturer of fence to start up what he thought would be a retirement project. McConnell chuckles, “I thought I would sell a little fence in the morning and manufacture a few rolls in the afternoon.” Bull Barn Fence Factory has grown far beyond those modest dreams, shipping across the United States to large-scale distributors and online retailers.

McConnell emphasizes the strength of the American worker: “I’ve traveled the world, from China to Europe to almost every place where you can see agriculture, and nobody outworks the Americans. Our workers at Bull Barn Fence Factory are just fantastic. They’re committed; they’re hardworking. It’s great to be part of this community.”

Westbury® Aluminum Railing: Built for Code Compliance and Contractor Confidence

When it comes to deck and railing projects, compliance with building codes is one of the most critical and often most confusing parts of the job. Codes vary depending on whether the project is residential, commercial, or located in a state with additional requirements like the Florida Building Code (FBC). They also evolve frequently, making it a challenge for contractors, dealers, and inspectors to stay on the same page.

Westbury® Aluminum Railing from Digger Specialties, Inc. (DSI), is engineered, tested, and supported to give you peace of mind when it comes to meeting building codes.

CUTTING THROUGH CODE CONFUSION

Most Westbury railing styles are specifically designed to meet code requirements when paired with the correct Westbury posts. With thorough testing for safety, strength, and durability, Westbury makes it possible to install with confidence, knowing your project is designed to pass inspection the first time. Whether working under:

• IRC – International Residential Code

• IBC – International Building Code

• FBC – Florida Building Code Westbury offers railing solutions that inspectors recognize and builders trust. This allows professionals to focus more on building and less on researching code variances.

INSTALLER-FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS

Contractors understand that time is money. Westbury products are designed for fast, straightforward installation meaning projects are completed more efficiently, inspections go smoothly, and callbacks are dramatically reduced. Popular options like the Tuscany Aluminum Railing deliver a timeless two-rail look that complements nearly any home. For homeowners who prefer modern, open designs, styles like VertiCable Vertical Cable Railing, Bella Cavo Horizontal Cable Railing, and Veranda Glass Railing offer sleek aesthetics while maintaining the code-ready performance that professionals depend on.

TRUSTED SUPPORT FOR DEALERS AND CONTRACTORS

DSI isn’t just about manufacturing railing systems. It’s also about providing a reliable partnership to dealers, distributors, and contractors. That means:

• Easy-to-understand documentation that simplifies code questions.

• Clear installation instructions that speed up project timelines.

• Responsive technical support to help troubleshoot unique code or installation challenges.

Encon Hosts Another Successful NorCal Trade Show

Wholesale supplier Encon Electronics held its annual NorCal Trade Show in Hayward, California, in late September, welcoming more than 20 exhibiting gate and access control manufacturers from across the country.

The majority of Encon’s leading brands were represented at the NorCal Show, including All-O-Matic, Ameriline, Aurovista, BEA Systems, Byan Systems, DoorBird, DoorKing, EMX Industries, FAAC/Viking Access, HySecurity, Infinity RFID, LiftMaster, Locinox, Maximum Controls, Miller Edge, Nice/Linear, Optex America, Torxun, and USAutomatic.

Nearly 100 people and more than 60 Encon customers attended the event, creating a steady stream of activity that vendors appreciated. “The quality attendance at this year’s show speaks to the demand for events like these and to the quality of manufacturers that exhibited this year,” says Jeff Harris, Encon president. “Their participation is critical to the success of our trade show events.”

Guests explored the latest product offerings, networked with manufacturer representatives, and gained hands-on technical knowledge in a fun, informal setting. Miller Edge President Flossie Miller says, “It was a fantastic show. Encon events always have fun, casual energy. We were pleased with the steady flow of attendees that visited our booth throughout the day.”

“The enthusiasm expressed by both vendors and attendees reflects the value of local, hands-on industry events. The NorCal Trade Show may be smaller than some national events, but our customers appreciate the chance to meet vendors and explore new products close to home,” adds Harris.

During the show, door prizes—ranging from gift cards to gate operators—were raffled off every half hour, and many customers walked away winners. This year’s show also featured a new competition: the ‘Battle of the Sweet Treats,’ which challenged manufacturers and Encon employees to prepare desserts for attendees to sample during the trade show.

As in previous years, Encon also hosted its traditional Vendor Dinner the night before the trade show. Manufacturer representatives from all over the country joined Encon employees for a festive evening. It’s an event where industry professionals enjoy dinner and libations in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere.

“We love hosting the Vendor Dinner,” says Harris. “As a distributor that offers products from a wide variety of manufacturers, it’s rewarding that we can bring everyone together for this tradition, and we’re extremely grateful our vendors continue to participate.”

Decks & Docks Company Partners with Service Wholesale, Inc.

Decks & Docks Company, a leading pure-play specialty distributor of composite decking and outdoor living building products, today announced that it has acquired Service Wholesale, Inc. (“SWI”), a Pennsylvania-based distributor of building and remodeling materials. This transaction supports Decks & Docks’ continued growth as a specialty distribution business with the addition of its first Pennsylvania location and the introduction of roofing and siding materials to its expansive product offering. SWI will operate under the Decks & Docks Company banner, and its employees will continue to provide their customers with the same high-quality expertise and service they have delivered for more than 38 years.

“We have long been impressed with SWI and the business Eric and Matt have built over the years,” says Shawn Roberts, CEO of Decks & Docks. “Eric, Matt and their colleagues share our commitment to always going the extra mile and doing right by our customers, and the SWI team is a great fit with our team. We are excited about the road ahead and what we can accomplish together. Their addition to our team further solidifies our position in the Mid-Atlantic and will allow us to better service contractor customers in Pennsylvania.”

SWI distributes and supplies a variety of outdoor living building products, including composite decking, fencing, roofing, siding and other building products. SWI carries major decking, roofing and siding brands, and sells directly to its primary customer base of contractors, deck builders and remodelers from its location in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. SWI was founded in 1987 and purchased by the Schmidt family in 1995. Eric and Matt succeeded their father, Stephen Schmidt, as the leaders of SWI in 2009.

“As a family business, we wanted to find a partner who shared our deep commitment to service with integrity, and we have found that with Shawn, Tyler and the entire Decks & Docks team,” says Eric and Matthew Schmidt, co-owners of SWI. “From our first discussions, it was clear the Decks & Docks team also pride themselves on customer service, prompt delivery times and unparalleled product availability. This transaction is an important milestone for our company, and we are excited to work with the Decks & Docks team as we continue to expand our product offering, provide outstanding customer service and remain an employer-of-choice in our community.”

“In addition to SWI’s position as one of the largest independent distributors of composite decking in the region, their expertise in the highly attractive roofing and siding sectors is a logical expansion of our capabilities as we continue to extend our position as a leading specialty distributor of outdoor living building products,” says Tyler Wallace, president of Decks & Docks. “The Schmidts have built an outstanding business with a best-in-class team, and we are confident they are the right partners to join us on our continued growth journey.”

5 Tips for Choosing DECKING & RAILING COLORS

When choosing decking and railing products, color is one of the most important choices pros and homeowners will make. But with so many options, how can they ensure they’re choosing hues that go together while also complementing the home?

Envision Outdoor Living Products, manufacturer of Envision composite decking and Fairway deck railings, offers five strategies pros can use to help homeowner customers narrow down:

1. CONSIDER THE COLORS OF THE HOME’S EXTERIOR

Finding an ideal composite decking and railing color combination starts by looking at the home’s facade. The colors of the siding, roof, windows, and other elements can help guide you to matching tones that complement the home’s overall look. The best part is that you don’t have to be a color theory expert to find an eye-catching combination. Look to online color palette tools, such as Canva’s Color Palette Generator, that provide suggested color combinations based on uploaded photos. Snap a picture of the home’s exterior and compare the suggested colors to those available from your chosen composite decking and railing lines.

2. FIND DECKING AND RAILING COLORS THAT FIT THEIR VISION

Have the homeowner take a step back and envision their dream outdoor living area. What type of mood or vibe do they want the

space to evoke? Are there any specific activities, such as hosting parties or practicing yoga, that they plan on doing?

With the answers to these types of questions, you can start to focus on what elements are going to make the client’s outdoor living space unique to them. The best railing and composite decking colors for each project often reflect those details. For example, if they’re looking for a relaxing oasis to enjoy the sunset after work, grey composite deck boards with white aluminum railing could be a good fit.

3. TAKE INSPIRATION FROM COLORS THAT RESONATE PERSONALLY

Like the colors of any project, so much of the decision comes down to personal preference. Usually, there are colors that we feel more connected to than others. Maybe the homeowner is drawn to hues that have warmer tones, like auburn or bronze. Have them think back to

some of the recent home purchases they’ve made — furniture, décor, or other building products. Are there any colors that showed up more than once? You also might want to think about eliminating composite decking and railing colors that clash with these preferences.

4. DON’T FEEL LIMITED TO ONE COLOR

Finding the best composite decking color for a project doesn’t have to mean choosing just one. Using two different colors opens a variety of creative design options while adding more contrast and visual interest to the space. Inlays made with a different composite decking color can create a focal point, for example. Another popular option is a picture frame, in which the deck boards are surrounded by a perimeter of planks in another color. Similar techniques can be used to designate unique areas and functionalities of the deck as well as to create visual separation on longer expanses.

5. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

Sometimes the best way to find the ideal decking and railing colors is to see them in action. Many manufacturers offer deck board samples shipped directly to customers or via their dealers. Just like paint swatches, you might be surprised at the insight the homeowner can get from seeing a deck sample in the space itself. In addition, some composite decking companies offer online design tools in which pros and homeowners can visually mix and match decking and railing products on an image of the home or on a similar stock image. This makes it easy to see how different deck colors look in combination with railings and with the rest of the home’s façade, helping to ease the decision process and avoid buyer’s remorse.

Financial Controls for 2026

It’s November and the holidays are just around the corner. In most companies, January is the start of a new financial accounting term and fiscal year. Also, 2026 will be a new tax year, so over the next few months, it’s time to get things in order and make any needed accounting adjustments.

This is the perfect time to review your financial statements to be sure you are collecting the information that can help you manage your business. Too many fence companies only collect financial data for tax purposes, and by doing that, you are selling yourselves short.

Collecting important financial data begins with a properly constructed “Chart of Accounts” that will direct income and expenses into meaningful “buckets” or categories. That information is then funneled into your Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet so you can see the true picture, and know what is making you money and what is not.

A detailed tracking of expenses can help spot red flags and unnecessary costs, and the possibility of wasteful behavior or even theft. These things can be difficult to see in generically collected financial statements. They must be designed for money management, and not just broadly grouped categories solely designed for the collection of tax information, like most accountants do. If you do not track income and expenses in detail and with information that is meaningful for managing your money, you will lose the ability to “manage” your finances.

Once you have established a meaningful Chart of Accounts and collect information in a P&L that is designed for money management, the next important step for every fence company is creating a Master Budget. Everyone needs to budget.

As a business owner or manager, you need to be able to manage your money, meaning you know where it is coming from and exactly where it is going. And you must budget your profit! You must know that your profit is going to be there at the end of each and every year, not something you just hope you find after 12 months of long, hard work. Therefore, profit must be a budgeted line item in your Master Budget.

Today, most of my clients are profitable and employ are what I call “lifers,” employees who stay and grow with the company. The culture of success my clients and I developed grew business dramatically and, more

importantly, helped generate substantial profit margins. Their employees are among the best paid in the business and I am very proud of what they have accomplished. Everyone is a happy camper – good news story all around.

That is the whole point, after all. How well your company performs is a reflection of the overall skill level of the management, and employees in that particular company, as well as how well they all work and plan together. How you manage your company and your money, how well you plan for success and, how well you develop a culture of success, will directly impact your bottom line and we all want the strongest bottom line possible.

Until then please do not hesitate to contact me with questions and/or comments. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best of luck in 2026 and may you be blessed with happiness and success throughout your lifetime.

WORKING hard and putting in long hours running a fencing operation is one thing that most of you are quite familiar with. Senstar’s FlexZone-60 & FiberPatrol FP1150 Achieve NPSA Certification for Critical Infrastructure Protection

Senstar Corporation, a leading provider of physical security and advanced sensing technologies, has announced its FlexZone-60 and FiberPatrol FP1150 perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) have secured certification from the UK’s National Protective Security Authority (NPSA).

Operating within MI5, the UK’s Security Service, the NPSA serves as the National Technical Authority for physical and personnel security. This certification confirms both systems have undergone evaluation and approval against version 6.0 of the NPSA Barrier Mounted PIDS Standard.

NPSA certification represents one of the world’s most stringent evaluation processes for perimeter security systems, guaranteeing that approved technologies can safeguard the UK’s most sensitive facilities. The certification process examines detection performance, false alarm rates, environmental resilience, and integration capabilities under real-world conditions.

“Securing NPSA certification for both the FlexZone-60 and FiberPatrol FP1150 systems underscores our commitment to delivering security solutions that satisfy the most demanding government standards,” says Fabien Halbert, Senstar CEO. “Their certification of these two products, in addition to our previously certified solution, OmniTrax, gives our customers confidence that these systems will perform reliably in the most challenging security applications. These latest certifications strengthen Senstar’s performance in critical infrastructure, continuing a legacy of reliability with over twenty years of presence in the UK.“

The certification validates the performance of the FlexZone-60 and FiberPatrol FP1150 systems when installed on a NPSA-specified fence system that represents the type of high-security perimeter protection required for critical national infrastructure, government facilities, and other high-value assets.

FlexZone-60 employs advanced “loose tube” perimeter intrusion detection technology, utilizing guided RF and Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to detect and locate attempts to cut, climb or breach fencing. The system pinpoints intrusions accurately even during multiple simultaneous

events amid background environmental noise. Sophisticated signal processing algorithms deliver exceptional detection accuracy while filtering environmental noise and weather-related disturbances to minimize false alarms. Its robust outdoor design and proven reliability in harsh conditions make FlexZone-60 a dependable solution for critical infrastructure, government facilities, and high-security commercial installations.

FiberPatrol FP1150 utilizes advanced fiber optic perimeter intrusion detection through Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), providing continuous fence line monitoring by detecting vibrations, cutting attempts, and climbing activities. The system delivers exceptional sensitivity and precise localization while maintaining robust performance across all weather conditions. Its immunity to electromagnetic interference and power surges that compromise traditional electronic sensors sets it apart. With distributed sensing architecture and intelligent signal processing, FiberPatrol FP1150 offers reliable, long-range perimeter protection for critical infrastructure, airports, government facilities, and data centers.

OmniTrax is a terrain-following covert outdoor perimeter intrusion detection sensor. Sensor cables buried in the ground generate an invisible electromagnetic detection field. It functions as a standalone system, can be fully integrated into any command-and-control system, and can cover large perimeters with limited infrastructure.

The NPSA-certified configuration provides security professionals with a validated solution for protecting government facilities, military installations, national infrastructure, high-security commercial facilities, data centers, telecommunications facilities, and transportation hubs and utilities. Both systems integrate seamlessly with existing security management platforms and can be deployed as part of comprehensive layered security strategies. Customers gain peace of mind knowing their facilities have robust protection without the operational burden of frequent false alarms.

It’s Time to Give Your Website a Good Scrubbing

It certainly took more time than we thought it would, but what big project in the fence industry doesn’t? So, we tried sub-contracting out some of the work, but you know how that sometimes just means more work for you, getting the subcontractors to respond, and finish their part of the project in a timely manner. It was certainly a complicated job for a small organization like ours, with limited resources and a tight deadline. But we stuck with it, and it was worth the effort. We got our website cleaned up. Yes, the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) is now in the final stages of a full review and updating of our CLFMI website. Not only has it been a worthwhile effort, but it has also helped us learn a lot about the importance of a “clean” website in today’s business world. In addition, we learned some key things about the value of websites we can share with our member companies to help with their websites.

Here are just a few of those key lessons that might entice you to take another look at your company’s website.

1. YOUR WEBSITE IS YOUR PRIMARY OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION. It is not just residential customers who are looking for you online. It’s also commercial, public works, infrastructure and high security clients who are checking your company out via your website. With the first click, they are evaluating your company in comparison to your competitors!

If you have not already done so, go to the website of one or two of your biggest competitors. When their website pops up on your screen, or on your phone, do you go, “Wow!”? If so, you had better take another look at your own website.

2. KEEP EVERYTHING UP-TO-DATE AND CURRENT! Old information is useless information. That is true of your value statements, your technical documents and specifications, and even your company’s history and list of key employees.

Are you highlighting products and services you rarely sell anymore? Do you keep your “25 Years of High-Quality Service” banner on your home page even though your company is now 29 years old (I guess 25

out of 29 is not bad). Are your photos the same ones you had on your website when you first developed it 22 years ago?

3. BE COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEWEST SEARCH ENGINE “RULES” AND LANGUAGES. Guess what? Google is VERY good at finding ways to make more money. If you are playing by their old rules, you will get old results. Google keeps updating its data on what its advertisers want and then updates its search rules to meet their advertisers’ needs. In 2025, the key words, phrases, number of mentions, length of articles, etc., are not what they were just a couple of years ago. How do you want to be found? Under “fence installer” or under “residential perimeter security?”

4. MAKE SURE YOUR SITE IS USER FRIENDLY – AND SECURE. CLFMI has dozens of technical documents on its website. Some are tools for architects, engineers and specifiers. Some are guides for contactors working on distinct types of projects. Some provide basic information for homeowners and retailers. These documents are loaded with links to ASTM standards, governmental guidelines, key sources, and other industry partners. Those links need to be current, fast and going to the right sources. When was the last time you checked every link on your website? That will be time consuming, of course (it sure has been with CLFMI). Remember, all it takes is one “error” message or one link to the wrong source, and a potential customer is off your page and on to a competitors’ website, hoping for less hassle.

5. USE MORE TESTIMONIALS TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR COMPANY’S SUCCESSES. Have you ever wondered why some advertisers are always showing “regular people” using their products while others hire famous people to say they use their products? In both cases, it is because testimonials are effective in promoting products and services. Your best sales tool is a satisfied customer.

And, no, you do not need to hire a famous person to get a credible testimonial (besides, in today’s online world, who even know who is “famous” anymore?). Maybe just a list of satisfied customers will work. Maybe just telling how fast your company has grown is the right testimonial.

Note: According to the Neilson Norman research group, the average website user will spend 20-30 seconds (about 2-3 clicks) on a site to determine if they feel they have found what they are looking for, or if they are frustrated and ready to move on to the next company. To make the best use of your testimonials, they should be accessible from your home page, no more than 2-3 clicks away.

Even the most durable fences will improve their performance with regular maintenance. The same is true with your website. It might not need a massive overhaul every year but scrubbing it at some level each year just makes sense. Maybe something as simple as identifying the highlights of the previous year for your company and checking to see if your website is reflective of those things (things that have changed and gotten better!).

Three last statistics to consider. Studes show:

• 75% of website visitors judge a company’s trustworthiness or professionalism by its website

• 94% of first impressions relate to a site’s design and visual appeal

• 88% will not give you a second chance if they have a poor experience navigating your website.

I hope a lot of you have already pulled up your company’s website before you even finish reading this article!

Courage and the Call to Lead

Leadership isn’t about guiding your organization, managing a department or creating and executing a successful business plan. People don’t commit themselves to strategies or financial reports, they commit themselves to a person. And if you’ve accepted or been placed in the role of leader, you must be courageous.

Leadership requires courage because influence, purpose, and values only come alive when a leader is willing to take risks, have hard conversations, and align their personal convictions with the mission of the organization.

WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE TO FOLLOW

Every leader has one thing in common: followers. Leadership is influence, and influence is earned over time, not granted on demand. Followers choose whom to follow based on credibility and trust.

Credibility grows when leaders do what they say they will do. When words and actions align, followers begin to believe in the leader’s integrity. Trust deepens further when leaders paint a vision of the future that people find both compelling and relevant to their own interests. A vision that does not inspire others is just a dream, a vision aligned with the hopes of others becomes a shared journey.

Having the courage to influence isn’t about controlling people. It’s about consistently showing up in a way that earns trust and invites others to join you in pursuing a better future.

KNOWING WHY YOU CHOOSE TO LEAD

Every leader must wrestle with two questions: Why am I choosing to lead? and What values will guide me as I do? Those questions aren’t optional— they define the way followers experience your leadership.

For me, the answer begins with the conviction that my primary role is to develop others and help them succeed. The true measure of leadership isn’t how high you climb, but how many others you lift along the way.

I also believe in authenticity. Leadership is not about playing a role; it’s about being true to who

you are and encouraging others to do the same. Followers can sense authenticity, and it creates a foundation of trust.

Finally, I believe passionately in the power of associations. Associations are unique communities where people come together not just to advance their work, but to support one another through personal and professional journeys. That’s why AFA matters so deeply – it is a place where leadership multiplies through shared purpose and shared growth.

Living by values requires courage. It means making decisions that may not always be popular but are consistent with what you believe is right— for yourself, your people, and your organization.

THE BINDING THREAD OF COURAGE

Courage is what makes influence and values real. Without courage, leadership remains abstract. With courage, leadership becomes tangible and transformative.

Courage in leadership is the willingness to take on the risks that come with responsibility. It is stepping into difficult conversations with honesty and empathy, even when silence would be easier. It is standing firm when your values, and your organization’s values, are tested.

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the decision to act anyway, because the cause is worthy, the people are counting on you, and the future demands it.

A CALL TO LEAD

Leadership has never been about titles, offices, or plans. It has always been about people who choose to follow a person they trust. And that trust grows from influence, purpose and values, held together by courage.

So here is the call. Choose to lead with courage. Be clear about why you lead, live out the values that guide you, and earn the influence that comes from consistent, authentic action. In doing so, you will not only lead others—you will inspire them to lead alongside you.

Management Corner Gratitude THE BUSINESS OF

It’s the season of giving thanks, but gratitude shouldn’t just be a seasonal sentiment in your business. It is a powerful management tool that can transform how your team performs, how your company communicates and how you lead. In an industry that often focuses on efficiency, output, and the next deadline, taking time to intentionally express gratitude can be the difference between a team that simply works together and one that truly thrives together. Here are just a few ways expressing gratitude can strengthen your business:

BUILDS CONNECTION. When managers express genuine appreciation, they create an environment where employees feel seen and valued. A simple “thank you for handling that issue so quickly” or “I appreciate how you went the extra mile on that project” has a measurable effect. Research consistently shows that employees who feel appreciated are more engaged, more loyal and more likely to deliver quality work. Gratitude closes the gap between “boss” and “team,” creating mutual respect and trust—the foundation of strong leadership.

STRENGTHENS COMPANY CULTURE. A culture of gratitude doesn’t happen by accident; it starts at the top. When leaders make recognition a routine part of communication, it becomes woven into the organization’s DNA. Teams begin to mirror that behavior, thanking one another and supporting collective success. In customer-facing industries like construction, manufacturing or services, gratitude should also extend outward to suppliers, clients and community partners. A simple note of appreciation or public acknowledgment can reinforce relationships that lead to long-term loyalty.

IMPROVES PERSPECTIVE UNDER PRESSURE. Managing people means navigating challenges, from tight schedules, budget pressures to equipment failures and demanding clients. Gratitude shifts perspective during those times by helping leaders focus on what’s going right instead of dwelling on what’s wrong. Recognizing the effort that keeps the business running smoothly—whether it’s the foreman who adjusts schedules or the bookkeeper who catches a small error before it becomes a big problem—grounds managers in appreciation rather than frustration.

HOW TO LEAD WITH GRATITUDE. Gratitude in management is less about grand gestures and more about consistency. Here are a few ways to put it into practice:

• Start meetings with recognition. Begin by highlighting one person’s recent win or extra effort.

• Send personal thank-you notes. A handwritten note or quick email can make a big impression.

• Model it daily. Let employees see you thanking others—colleagues, vendors, customers.

• Make gratitude part of feedback. Pair constructive criticism with appreciation for what’s done well.

Over time, gratitude becomes a natural part of your company’s communication rhythm. At its core, gratitude reminds everyone, from the front line to the corner office, that people are your company’s greatest asset. When employees know their work matters and their contributions are appreciated, they show up differently: with pride, commitment and care.

Gratitude won’t replace good strategy or hard work, but it amplifies both. A thankful manager doesn’t just lead more effectively; they build a team that’s resilient, respectful, and ready to grow together.

Eubanks Fencing

Eubanks Fencing has been a family owned and operated business since its inception in 2018. However, the Eubanks brand has grown into a multifaceted operation that includes the growing fencing business, the popular weekly Fence Guy podcast, and the new multimedia company, Nailed It Productions.

“I first was introduced to the fence industry through several family members who had careers in fencing,” says Craig Eubanks, owner of Eubanks Fencing. “After a career in law enforcement and other opportunities, my cousin approached me about starting our own fence company.”

In its early days, Eubanks Fence offered chain link, wood, PVC and aluminum fence designs. Craig leaned heavily on the contacts he had made from his previous work experience as well as family and friends for their first projects.

“Our first job ever was a chain link fence repair. That support we received in our first year was just a blessing. We tried several different strategies and referral services, but we didn’t experience growth or decline. Around the three-year mark of business, we started a heavy focus on social media and other digital marketing efforts. This is where we saw a true difference,” he says.

As customers learned more about Eubanks Fence, Craig and his team took advantage of learning about them as well. He found that many people asked the same questions and needed a central location for information. This was the groundwork for Fence Guy podcast.

“We noticed all our customers would ask the same questions when they called us regarding their upcoming project. We started creating a series of videos on our Facebook page to direct callers to a central location for everything they wanted to know,” says Craig.

Released every Tuesday, each episode features a variety of fence industry discussions and a special guest interview. “The topics we cover apply to every industry, not just fencing. From marketing strategies to learning from our peers, this show is for everyone.”

As the podcast drew more attention to the Eubanks brand and online success, Craig was approached several times about the company’s marketing strategies. At the time, all their work was done in-house, but Craig once again took the opportunity to branch out and serve others. Nailed It Productions was created to grow the Eubanks brand and to partner with other businesses seeking bold, results-driven marketing.

“Nailed It Productions is brand new, and we’re excited about the future. We hope to take on 10 clients. This is a completely new venture for us, so the sky is the limit.”

Craig says he encourages young professionals, and anyone interested in starting their own company, to build a supportive network that helps you keep going when times are tough.

“Go to as many training and networking events as you can, but don’t just attend, make conversation with everyone you can. You get what you give and developing relationships start with putting your best foot forward. When the time is right, get a mentor. Whether this is a single person or a coaching agency, make sure it’s the right fit for you. Most importantly, don’t give up, there is always something greater on the other side.”

Craig says he contributes Eubanks Fencing’s success and continued growth to his dedicated team and the support of his family. “We have an incredible team that is determined to bring us to the next level. We are positioned for our best year yet in 2026 and that is thanks to our employees. And we would remiss if we didn’t thank our families for their continued support through the late hours and demanding schedules that come with the business. None of this would be possible without our them.”
