JULY 2025 32 YEARS SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1993

Driving with glasses and sunglasses

Did you know that if you wear glasses or contact lenses to drive it is recorded on your driving licence? There is a code on the left lower corner of the license card, 01.01 means you are required to wear glasses to drive, 01.02 means you are required to wear contact lenses to drive, and also code 02 means that you need to wear a hearing aid or communication aid. You could be liable for a hefty €200 fine if stopped by police and you are not wearing your glasses or contact lenses. At the moment there is no specific fine for not wearing hearing aids, but if they find you have driven unsafely due to the hearing impairment then you could possibly face a fine related to road safety.

You are not required by law to have a spare pair of driving glasses in the car, however, if you are required to wear them to drive as indicated on your driving licence, then if your glasses get lost or damaged you will not be permitted to drive until you get a replacement pair which could take up to 14 days. Therefore, it makes sense to keep a spare pair just in case.

Living in Spain we are lucky to have sunshine almost every day of the year, and as well as shielding our eyes from the brightness of the sun with sunglasses, we need to protect them from the harmful UV rays which are present even on cloudy days. UV damage can be in the form of cataracts, macular degeneration, eye cancers as well as inflammation and burns of the conjunctiva, cornea and external eye parts of the eyes. There are many options of sun protection available, tinted, polarised and reactolites being the most common. All must have 100% UV 400 protection and all off-the-shelf sunglasses must have CE marking EN1836:1997 on the arm of the glasses. Be aware of fake glasses as they can print this on them even though they do not meet the protection credentials. The tint colour depth has limitations for driving too. Light tint 43-80% LTF (category 1), Medium tint 18-43% LTF (category 2), Dark tint 8-18%LTF (category 3), all of these are only suitable for daytime driving. The darkest tint is 2-8% LTF (category 4), and is not suitable for driving at all. €200 fines can be incurred if you do not abide by these rules.

At Intervision Expert Opticas and Audiologias our tinted sunglasses lenses come in many different choices of colour, mirror tints, or graduated tint if preferred. Now we have more choices of colours of photochromic lenses than before, and polarised lenses with their inbuilt anti-glare. All are available in varifocals as well as single vision and bifocals.

What is the difference between tinted, photochromic and polarised lenses? Fixed tint colours are permanently coloured and reduce the brightness of the sun. Photochromic lenses change from clear to dark and back clear again relative to the amount of UV light around. They do not change in the car as most windscreens now have UV protection, however, there are now some new photochromic lenses that react to visible light and not by UV (enquire instore for price and availability). Polarised lenses are the best option as they reduce glare from reflective surfaces (eg floor, or water surface) and give improved clarity and contrast of images. All our sun protection lenses are with UV filter.

Call us for a free eye test and a chat with our Optical Advisors regarding the best options of sunglasses for you, or to book for a free hearing test and chat about our hearing aid selection.

Stay Compliant and Protect Your Pet with Insurance

Town halls across Spain are introducing enforcement measures aimed at responsible pet ownership. Dog owners who fail to follow updated regulations could face substantial fines. These rules now require that certain dogs be kept on a lead in public spaces, be microchipped, and properly registered. Additionally, owners must clean up after their dogs!

Fines will also be issued for failing to register potentially dangerous dogs. These are breeds or mixed breeds that display physical and behavioural traits considered high-risk. Common examples include the Pit Bull, Rottweiler and Doberman. Dogs over 20kg must also wear a muzzle in public, regardless of breed. Each town hall provides an official list and additional guidance, so it’s important for owners to check locally.

To support responsible pet ownership and safeguard against unexpected costs, Jennifer Cunningham offers comprehensive pet insurance offering Immediate Healthcare protection for accidents and emergencies.

You are free to use any licensed vet, anywhere in Spain. The plan accepts any pet from as little as 8 weeks of age, regardless of breed. You can make an unlimited number of claims each year, up to the maximum benefit outlined in your plan.

Vaccinations are a must. Dogs must be protected against certain viruses and illnesses, for example Leishmaniosis, Parvovirus, and Rabies. Cats need cover for Feline Infectious Enteritis, Feline Leukaemia, Cat Flu, and Rabies. A full list is available.

Additional benefits include:

• Boarding kennel and cattery fees if you or your partner are hospitalised for more than 48 hours, offering peace of mind during emergencies.

• With European travel cover for emergency treatment for your

pet when travelling abroad, using any vet of your choice.

If you make a claim, you will be required to pay an excess.

Liability cover is also available. This protects you financially if your pet causes injury or property damage. We can offer standalone cover for dangerous and non dangerous breeds, or add them to your Home policy with us. The policy covers:

• Third-party bodily injury (e.g. dog bites)

• Damage to third-party property

• Legal fees for defending claims

• Euthanasia and death-related costs due to covered injuries

Some exclusions apply depending on the policy, so always read the small print.

Flexible payment plans are available, making it easy to budget for your pet’s ongoing protection.

As Spanish authorities take a firmer stance on animal responsibility, now is the time to review your pet’s legal and health status. Visit your local town hall for full guidance on Dangerous Dog breeds, registration and local laws.

To say I've had a busy month would be an understatement on both the work front and personal front. The distribution of our monthly magazine and also the 6 monthly Professionals Services magazine being hastily followed by another deadline, has meant it really felt that the weeks literally flew by.

We had the pleasure of attending the wedding of my nephew in Cartagena which was a truly magical time and to get together with family from the UK and the US made it even more special.

I am trying to plan a few days away for me and my other half although looking at dates it is proving more difficult to find a time that suits us both due to other commitments... might have to be a last minute booking.

For any music lovers there are a number of festivals upcoming in our local areas. The Alma Occident festival in Alicante commences in July with a variety of confirmed artists including Texas, Seal, Travis and UB40. Towards the end of July there is the Low Festival in Benidorm which will feature The Pet Shop Boys, The Kooks and Empire of the Sun to name but a few.

All these concerts are of very reasonable prices and being virtually on our doorstep makes it even better.

This summer looks like it is going to be a really hot one. Stay safe, drink plenty of water and slap on the sunscreen. Until next time ….

Crescendo International Choir Raises Money for Food Bank with Benijofar Concert

Crescendo International Choir performed a free concert at the Benijofar Catholic Church Saturday evening, June 7, raising over 300 euros for the local food bank. Many local area residents attended, including the Mayor of Benijofar. “We welcome the support of friends and neighbours as their presence at our concerts has allowed us to continue singing and raising money through raffles and bucket collections for this, our 21st, year,” said Robin Myers, Crescendo Choir’s President. “We were delighted to put on this concert as it demonstrates the coming together of business and community in music, whilst supporting good causes.”

Mark Harrison, Managing Partner of Seagate Wealth Management, based in Benijofar, sponsored the concert, which enabled all funds raised to be donated to the Benijofar food bank. Belen Martinez-Ortiz, owner of Rincon de Mateo, another Benijofar-based business, supported Crescendo Choir by bringing coffee, tea and biscuits for the audience to enjoy after the concert for a small donation. She then donated this money to support the choir’s efforts to give free concerts to support local community causes.

If you are interested in getting involved in Crescendo, you are invited to come to one of their rehearsals. After a summer break, rehearsals will begin again September 8 at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos and will be held Monday from 17:30 to 19:45. All singers are welcome.

For more details, see its website at crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at Crescendo Choir. If you have questions, email info@crescendo-choir.com.

The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. The current choir includes people from England, Scotland, Wales, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. Its music director and pianist are both accomplished Spanish musicians.

The photo shows Crescendo International Choir Director Irene Oliva, (front and center), choir members and pianist, Carlos Almela, far left. Also pictured are Karen Love, Client Account Manager from Seagate Wealth Management, (immediate right of Ms. Oliva), and Pilar Yagues, Benijofar Town Council member, in striped dress. The leader of the church where the concert was given, Iglesia Santiago Apóstol, is to Ms. Yague’s right. His name is Reverend Don Stanislaw.

THE PLANET URANUS

My wife is a little astonished that I picked such a bland title for this months dip into astronomy with so many possibilities for digging up bad old schoolboy jokes. I resisted all those temptations so I will proceed to explain why Uranus is such a weird and foreboding place.

I should start with where the name comes from, it's ancient Greek and refers to one of the earliest gods. Although Greek deities all seem a bit weird to us in the 21st century, Uranus was in a league of his own, he was both son and husband to Gaia the Earth goddess and fathered the 12 Titans. One of them, Cronus later castrated Uranus and after that things went downhill a bit. As this is astronomy not mythology I'll just add that Uranus was the god of the heavens which is why we use his name.

I've heard many different pronunciations over the years, mostly by people trying to be polite and not mention bums so here is the correct way, although hardly anyone uses it. Uranus is Greek so pronounce it in ancient Greek, 'Ouranos' that's oo-ran-nohs.

That's quite enough of that, so now for the planet itself. It's the seventh planet from the Sun and a really long way out, only the planet Neptune is further away. It's a gigantic ball of mostly methane, ammonia and water with a soupçon of other noxious substances. Through a telescope it's a barely discernible blueish dot that I first saw when I was 19 years old, and was so unimpressed that it was 50 years before I bothered again. Probably the main reason an amateur will look for it is to know that they've seen all the planets for themselves, and that is an excellent reason. If you want to try for yourself it will be best to wait until later in the year as it's not easily visible to us at the moment. In the first week of September Uranus will be just below the famous Pleiades star cluster.

If Uranus is so boring to look at what makes it so special? All the planets circle around the Sun in the same plane, meaning it's as though they are sitting on a gigantic disk. Each planet spins on its axis, Earth takes one year to do that but all the planets take different times. The axis of each planet is tilted over compared with its orbit, Earth by about 23 degrees (this is why we have seasons) Mars by 25 degrees, Mercury hardly at all, but Uranus is completely different, it's tilted by a whopping 98 degrees, effectively it's flying through space lying on its side.

What can have happened to Uranus to make this happen? We're pretty certain that billions of years ago, probably not long after it was formed, Uranus was hit by another planet similar in size to Earth and the collision knocked it over. It's also likely that a lot of the debris from the impact slowly coalesced together and became Uranus's moons.

I'll finish with a little fun fact, these moons are mostly named after characters in Shakespearian plays instead of those weird Greek gods. So, if anyone tells you that this planet is boring now you'll know which part of their anatomy they're talking from!

Is Your Villa Becoming Too Much For You?

You know how it is, you move to Spain and move into a wonderful villa on a beautiful urbanisation. It has its own pool, lovely gardens and lots of bedrooms for guests to visit. You have time to relax, enjoy the slowness of Spanish life and pass the time of day visiting your friends. It’s truly wonderful. However, as we get on in years we start to encounter some realities. The villa starts to become too big, taking up more time to keep on top of. Those quick maintenance jobs start to become difficult. You start to feel a bit more isolated and those visitors, well, they don’t come as often. Before you know it, your dream villa is becoming a harsh reality. The thing is, you love living here but start worrying about your health and being lonely.

It’s time for your 2nd retirement, one where you can live a far less stressful life, make new friends, yet stay in the country that’s become your home.

This is exactly the scenario we see time and time again at Ciudad Patricia. The concept of independent senior living addresses all these concerns and more. Ciudad Patricia is a dedicated retirement resort set in 100,000 square metres of beautifully well-kept gardens with purpose build, decent sized retirement apartments. If you are looking for something a bit different to do with the visitors this summer why not enjoy one of the candlelit concerts in Alicante which charm audiences with live string quartets performing everything from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to tributes to Queen, Coldplay or ABBA. Hundreds of flameless candles give a warm, immersive ambience - a truly magical evening. The concerts typically run around 60 minutes, with doors opening approximately 45 minutes early to let attendees soak in the atmosphere. Venues in the area include Museo Arqueológico de Alicante (MARQ), Meliá Villaitana, Benidorm and Teatro Municipal de Torrevieja.

Unlock the Potential: 5 Different ways to use a Retrospective Licence

A retrospective licence / certificate of antiquity holds the key to multiple benefits, transforming your property’s standing and value. Explore five compelling ways to harness its power:

Authority’s Respect: Gain unwavering respect from authorities. Once issued, your property’s extensions or alterations become untouchable by Spanish authorities, shielding you from fines or demolition orders.

Title Deed Incorporation: It is also employed to integrate extensions into your property’s title deeds.

Enhance Tax Upgrades: A retrospective licence / certificate of antiquity is the primary document required by the taxing department to upgrade the SUMA / council tax for house extensions or pools.

Market with Confidence: When marketing an illegally extended property, instil confidence in agents and potential buyers. The licence acts as a shield, assuring that alterations cannot be fined, thus securing a seamless selling process.

Navigate Official Upgrades: Utilise it to upgrade official maps (Catastro). The licence validates extensions or alterations, streamlining the process and ensuring compliance with legal requisites.

However, not all property owners are eligible for a retrospective licence. The conditions are as follows:

• In the Murcia area, existing building work must be a minimum of 4 years old.

• In the Almeria area, the building work should be over 6 years old.

• In the Alicante area, the building work must have been completed before the 20th of August 2014 (over 11 years approximately).

Cost-wise, a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 326.70€ IVA incl, and Extensions cost 363€ IVA incl, covering all extensions on the property.
