Jennifer Cunningham Insurance wants to keep our clients informed and safe on the road.
Breaking down on the road is never ideal, but placing a warning triangle in today’s traffic conditions can put you at serious risk. In Spain, current rules require drivers to walk at least 50 metres behind their vehicle on a motorway to place a triangle. On single carriageways, it’s double the distance: 50 metres in front and behind. This can mean walking up to 200 metres on foot, often next to fastmoving traffic, in bad weather, or low visibility.
In 2019, 58 pedestrians died on Spain’s high-capacity roads, many after exiting their vehicles to place or retrieve a triangle. Clearly, a safer alternative is needed. That’s why Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) is promoting the V-16 hazard warning light, a modern, more secure replacement for traditional warning triangles. What Is the V-16?
The V-16 is a compact, battery-powered beacon that flashes a bright amber light in all directions. It’s visible from up to 1,000 metres, even in fog, rain, or darkness. Best of all, you can activate and place it on the roof of your car without exiting the vehicle, helping keep you safe in dangerous roadside situations.
Many V-16 models are now connected devices, meaning they also send your vehicle’s location to DGT 3.0, Spain’s national traffic alert system. Other drivers receive this information in real time through mobile apps, GPS systems, or in-car displays, allowing them to slow down or change lanes well in advance.
The V-16 is part of Spain’s Road Safety Strategy 2030, which aims to reduce road deaths by 50%. It works with all vehicles, regardless of age or model, and is ideal for people with reduced mobility who may struggle to walk to place a triangle.
New Law from 1st January 2026
From 1st January 2026, it will be mandatory by law to use an approved, connected V-16 warning light instead of the traditional triangle. To comply, the device must include a non-removable built-in SIM card that communicates directly with DGT 3.0, ensuring your location is transmitted automatically in the event of a breakdown.
To help our clients prepare, we have a list of governmentrecommended V-16 devices that meet the legal requirements.
When Should You Switch?
While the law comes into full effect in January 2026, early adoption is strongly recommended. Not only will it keep you safer, but it also ensures you're prepared well ahead of the deadline.
At Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, your safety is our priority. We are committed to keeping our clients informed about changes that matter.

We had a week of house swap with darling daughter last month as the local fiestas were taking place directly below our apartment block. She and the family are involved in most of the fiestas in the town so it works perfectly as we get peace and quite at their house and they can watch from our balcony. I couldn't get used to the silence but hubby loved it. Our dog had fun with their dog and enjoyed having a garden to play in, although once the temperatures started getting crazy there was not much playing.
We discovered Rummikub whilst we were there and lost a few days challenging each other - to be fair I was not much of a challenge! Can't believe we didn't know about this game - I'm now wondering what others are out there that we would enjoy. TV is just not doing it for us at the moment so any suggestions for games would be greatly appreciated.
My drivers licence is up for renewal so off I went to get it all sorted out. For the first time I had to do the twiddly knob test, keeping the balls inside the lines - well I didn't go completely out of them but gosh it's not easy and there was a bit of beeping. Feeling sure I did rubbish I was surprised when she said I was the best she had seen that day. They sorted the forms, photo etc and it will be posted to me in a couple of weeks - loving technology at the moment for making things far less hassle than they use to be.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

One in two young people today are at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening habits. It’s a startling statistic — and a growing concern in our increasingly noisy world. Whether it’s blasting music through headphones, working in loud environments, or attending concerts and fitness classes with amplified sound, many of us are unknowingly putting our hearing at risk.
The Science Behind the Sound
When we listen to loud sounds, especially over prolonged periods, we can damage the delicate sensory cells in our inner ears. These cells are crucial for detecting sound — and unlike other cells in our body, they do not regenerate once damaged.
This can lead to noise-induced hearing loss, which is permanent. Another common result is tinnitus — a persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing in the ears. Both conditions can significantly affect one’s quality of life.
Who’s at Risk?
You might be surprised to find yourself in the danger zone. You could be at risk if you regularly:
· Work in a noisy environment (like factories, construction, or live events)
· Use headphones or earphones at high volumes
· Spend time in places with loud music like nightclubs, concerts, or even fitness classes
Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable, but once it occurs, it cannot be reversed. While hearing aids and rehabilitation
services can help people with hearing loss, the best treatment is prevention.
Protecting Your Hearing Is Easier Than You Think
The key to prevention is adopting safe listening habits
. Here's how you can protect your ears:
· Keep the volume down – If you're using headphones, follow the 60/60 rule: Listen at no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time.
· Use noise-canceling headphones – These reduce the need to raise volume in noisy environments.
· Wear ear protection – Use earplugs or earmuffs in loud settings like concerts or construction sites.
· Take listening breaks – Give your ears time to recover by taking regular breaks from loud noise.
· Limit time spent in noisy places – Even short exposures to very loud sounds can cause damage.
Listen Smart - Your Future Self Will Thank You
Hearing is something most of us take for granted, until it starts to fade. The good news? With simple changes, you can enjoy music and life’s sounds - safely.
So next time you reach for your headphones or head out to a loud event, ask yourself: Am I listening safely?
Because once your hearing is gone, there's no turning up the volume.

1. Underestimating How Long You'll Live.
Of course, there are no guarantees for how long we'll all be here but it is true to say that the average person is living longer than ever before, thanks to the advancements in healthcare and quality of life. If you plan for a 20-year retirement but end up living 30 years, there is a potential risk of running out of money.
How can it potentially be avoided? Using conservative estimates on life expectancy, assets such as pensions to cover basic needs, and maintaining a portion of investments in growth assets to combat inflation.
2. Failing To Account For Inflation.
Inflation slowly erodes purchasing power and pushes up household prices on a regular basis. At just 3% annually, prices double roughly every 24 years – meaning a cost of 20,000€ now could require 40,000€ in the future.
How can it potentially be avoided? Include inflation-adjusted expenses in retirement projections, keep a portion of your assets in stocks or real estate which have the potential to keep pace with inflation, and regularly review your budget and adjust any withdrawals accordingly.
3. Underestimating Healthcare & Long-Term Care Costs
Healthcare can be notoriously expensive as we get older and require more assistance. Even if health cover is in place, there can often be treatments or surgery which are excluded in the conditions.
How can it potentially be avoided? Setting aside an emergency fund and/or budgeting for potential health costs can help significantly. Considering private health cover may also be an option depending on age and wellness.
4. Withdrawing Too Much, Too Soon.
Overspending early in retirement can drain funds quickly, especially if it happens to coincide with a market drop or change in economic environment.
How can it potentially be avoided? Following a sustainable withdrawal rate (e.g. 4-5% every year), maintaining an emergency fund as referred to above and regularly reassessing your annual spend.
If you are approaching retirement, or are already in retirement, and would like to chat through longevity of funds, please do feel free to contact us.

If you own a property in Spain and are considering registering it for tourist rental, it is important to be aware of a key legal update affecting the process. Under current legislation, registering a home in the Tourism Registry now requires prior approval from the community of property owners (comunidad de propietarios), and not just any approval—a qualified majority vote is needed.
What is a qualified majority?
As set out in Article 17.12 of the Spanish Horizontal Property Law (Ley de Propiedad Horizontal), a qualified majority means: Three-fifths (3/5) of all property owners, and
• Three-fifths (3/5) of the total participation quotas in the building.
Importantly, this does not refer to 3/5 of the owners present at a meeting. Instead, it refers to a double majority of the entire ownership, regardless of whether all owners attend the meeting or not.
So for the decision to pass, you must obtain the agreement of:
At least 60% of all the owners in the building, and
• Those owners must collectively hold at least 60% of the ownership shares.
The 30-Day Rule: How absentee votes count
After the vote is taken during a community meeting, Spanish law allows 30 calendar days for any absent owners to express their position. According to Article 17.8, if a properly notified
owner does not respond within that time, their silence is legally interpreted as a vote in favour of the agreement reached by the majority.
This rule is important because it means the votes of absent owners will reinforce the decision taken at the meeting—whether it is to approve or reject the proposal.
However, if an owner disagrees with the result, they must notify the community secretary within 30 days (using a method that provides proof of receipt) to formally register their opposition.
What about increasing community fees for tourist rentals?
The same qualified majority is also required when the community wishes to adopt a resolution to increase the community fees by up to 20% for those owners who rent out their property for tourist purposes.
For example, if a proposal is made to raise the fees for tourist rentals and it is rejected by the majority, then the votes of those not present at the meeting will also count as supporting the rejection—unless they formally object within 30 days.
This legal structure is designed to ensure the stability of agreements and prevent decisions from being overturned by inaction.

U3A Marina Baixa was formed back in 2006 and provides an opportunity for English speaking people who are no longer in fulltime employment to become members of an association which promotes life-long learning. Whether this be developing a new skill, exploring new ideas or just wanting to meet new people on a social basis.
There are numerous groups offering a range of activities including crafts, watercolour painting, petanca, ten pin bowling, walking, picnics, wine tasting, travel, dining out, assistance in times of need and help with using your smart phone or laptop.
There are groups just for men to get together for a chat over a drink or a meal and a mixed group specifically for members who live alone. There really is something for everyone providing the opportunity to make new friends and to have something positive to look forward to each week.
Membership is just 10 euros a year and provides you with access to all of the above groups plus new groups being offered throughout the year. U3A Marina Baixa extends to the towns of Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Alfaz del Pi, Albir, Altea, La Nucía, Callosa d'en Sarria and Polop. They meet on the fourth Monday of every month (with the exception of August and December) at 11am in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi which, for those of you who do not drive, is on the Number 10 bus route from Benidorm/Altea. A local restaurant is always booked for members wishing to have lunch together after the meeting.
New members are always welcome and maybe you have something you can offer to the Association which may be of interest to other members. Following most of the monthly meetings a speaker is invited to share their experiences or interests with the membership and a monthly raffle is held to enable the Association to support local charities.
Why not put a note in your diary to come along on Monday 22 September and have a chat with members to ascertain whether the Association would be of interest to you. It may be just what you are looking for now that you live here, or spend several months here in Spain. Further information can be found on the U3A Marina Baixa Facebook page.
I have recently been to see a nice couple who have decided within the six months or so of being in the new property that they want to get rid of their natural lawn and change it for an artificial grass lawn. Bravo, I absolutely agree.
Their lawn is terrible, it has the wrong type of grass in it for the Spanish climate, it is full of weeds and is general let down.
Now I’ve said this sort of thing a thousand times. It's not that you cannot have a real lawn in Spain, you can, but are you really prepared to put in the money and time required to have one.
The biggest problem I have found after working in Spain for over two decades is that 99.99% of Spanish builders and “gardeners” do not have the first clue about how to install a real grass lawn. I’ve seen it so many times I cannot tell you. Hint you cannot throw down some soil and seed and water it and expect a beautiful lawn. This is why the vast majority of lawns don’t work here.
If you build a house on bad cheap and poorly made foundations it won't stay up for long, it’s the same thing for everything in life, we all know the general rules, if you do a good basis, lay the foundations etc then you have a better chance of succeeding with what ever you are doing above. It's exactly the same for a lawn. Too many times people think it's fine, it's ok, it will live. I’m sorry, it won’t, not unless you get lucky. To make a natural lawn work you have to have the right amounts of soil, the necessary prep work, the correct size irrigation system, the correct seed and required chemicals to protect that seed, everything, the whole process is far more complex than most people ever give it credit for. And that’s the rub, like any job done properly it means there is cost involved. To prep a lawn properly costs money, to maintain it properly costs money, to water it costs money.
Do yourself a favour, don’t waste your time, your energy or your money, put in an Artificial Grass lawn. None of the hassle, none of the looking at bare patches etc for years thinking it's ugly. Deal with it from the beginning.
I have had negative comments in the past via social media regarding artificial grass, and often from people in the UK. Well we don’t live in the UK and we don’t have good rainfall, in fact artificial grass in the UK isn’t a stupid idea for lots of reasons but that’s a story for another day.
The main point is don’t get lost in a nostalgic thought about having a beautiful natural lawn in Spain, because it is incredibly hard and costly to achieve, save yourself years of hassle and money. Speak to Artificial Grass Spain, we are installing up and down the Costa Blanca all the time, give us a call or drop us an email and we will come and help you get a beautiful hassle free lawn.

Mark your calendars and bring your friends and family! The upcoming Padel Tournament and Gala Day on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October 2025 brings sport, fun, food, stalls, entertainment, and fundraising for the cat colonies of Jávea.
The weekend kicks off with an exciting Padel Tournament, held across both Saturday and Sunday, inviting players of all skill levels to compete, have fun and support a great cause. On Sunday, the spotlight turns to a Fundraiser Gala Day – a lively, family-friendly event with entertainment from 1pm by Ian Hunt singer and Mick Dennison DJ and Master of Ceremonies. There are stalls of Carol’s Jams and Chutneys and Cortado’s cake stall that will be open all day, or until the jams, cakes and pastries run out! The raffle, one of our largest to date, will include luxury prizes from a holiday, fine dining meal for two at home, our fabulous wine hampers, a cocktail hamper, to a variety of vouchers from local salons, shops and restaurants. Tickets will be sold on Saturday and Sunday with prize draws on Sunday 5pm. There will be a catthemed activity stall and volunteer stall giving you the chance to meet some of the charity’s feline ambassadors and volunteers.
We also have our newly launched 2026 Cat Calendar as part of our fundraising. All proceeds go to the Javea Feral Cat Association, a cat charity dedicated to looking after the cat colonies of Jávea. They manage a dedicated Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) programme. TNR is beneficial for the community and the cats as breeding cycles are broken, populations are gradually reduced and the annoying behaviours of breeding cats – fighting, yowling and spraying – stop. Elizabeth Trafford, President, JFCA comments: “We are in desperate need of money this year as disappointingly the funding that goes directly to the vets for TNR has just not materialised from the council! We hope that our Gala fundraising day will continue to provide enough money to continue TNR, vaccinations, buy medications and more, for the cats in need.”
Julie Keene, Vice President comments: “This is our biggest fund-raising event, and we are extremely grateful for the support of our local community, Padel 24, local businesses and all our volunteers. “This is a weekend where padel lovers, families and volunteers come together to make a difference. We look forward to seeing everyone at Club de Padel, Paris 24, Avinguda de Paris, Jávea. “Don’t miss this paw-some weekend for a purr-fect cause!“

This year marks a very special milestone for Construma: 25 years of turning dreams into reality. Since our founding in 2000 by José Javier Mata, we have proudly grown into a leading family business in the Marina Alta region. Over the past quarter of a century, we have built more than 500 swimming pools, carried out numerous renovations, designed new builds, and developed real estate projects that reflect quality, trust, and innovation. Our commitment to excellence has been recognised with both national and international awards in the swimming pool sector.
None of this would have been possible without the continued support of our loyal customers and friends. Your trust has been the foundation of our journey, and we warmly invite you to visit our facilities, where you’ll find our specialist pool shop with the same professional and friendly advice you’ve always known.
With PoolTiger, pool owners can enjoy:
- Crystal-clear, healthy water with superior disinfection, eliminating over 99% of bacteria, viruses, and algae.
- Massive chemical savings of up to 85%, while removing chloramines, lotions, organic residues, and even cyanuric acid.
- Protection for your investment by preventing limescale buildup and extending the lifespan of saltwater chlorinators.
- Eco-friendly operation with no electricity use, no maintenance, and quick installation in under 20 minutes.
- Durability and peace of mind, backed by a 2-year warranty (extendable to 5) and an estimated 15-year lifespan.
As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we are also proud to present a revolutionary advancement in pool care: PoolTiger. This innovative system harnesses hydrodynamic cavitation technology to transform the way pools are maintained—naturally, efficiently, and sustainably. In simple terms, hydrodynamic cavitation works by creating microscopic bubbles in the water that collapse with great energy, destroying bacteria, viruses, algae, and organic contaminants at a molecular level. The process mimics a natural cleaning effect, leaving the water purer without the need for harsh chemicals.
By integrating PoolTiger into your pool system, you not only reduce costs and maintenance but also create a healthier, more enjoyable swimming experience for the whole family.
At Construma, innovation has always gone hand in hand with tradition. As we look back on 25 years of dedication, we are also looking ahead—continuing to deliver quality, trust, and pioneering solutions to our community.
For more information on PoolTiger or to discover our wide range of services, visit us at Construma. Together, let’s make the next 25 years even more extraordinary.

I write this column a few weeks before publication, and one of the news stories at the moment is about a sizeable rock from Mars being sold at auction for a great deal of money. I've no intention of going into the politics of this sort of thing, but the sale itself does raise some interesting questions for the person in the street.
Firstly, how do we know that the rock is from Mars? This is an interesting question and is also very easy to answer properly. It all boils down to taking a sample of the rock and cutting or drilling into it in a vacuum chamber. This releases a tiny amount of the gases trapped in the rock, a sort of molecular fingerprint of the place where the rock came from. We then compare this sample with the results of the air samples from the Viking spacecraft that landed on Mars nearly 50 years ago and lo and behold, they match each other. Definitive proof of the origin of the rock.
Are there many rocks from Mars on Earth? No there aren't, not many at all. Somewhere around 400 out of the 72.000 meteorites that have been catalogued originated on Mars. The latest one is a whopping 25 kilograms in weight, it's the biggest found so far which is why it's worth millions.
Now for the biggest question, how do all these rocks get from Mars to Earth. There are two ways that this happened, either by an impact from something smacking into Mars or by volcanic eruption spitting rocks into space. Mars has a much weaker gravity field than we do on Earth so it's relatively easy for this to occur. As you might imagine, the rock types are quite different so they get special names (shergottites, nakhalites etc if you want to look them up). Once the rocks have reached space they will orbit around randomly until one day they meet with the Earth and come plummeting down to the ground, awaiting someone to make a fortune from them.
Last bit, how old are these rocks? Well, the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old and the oldest Martian meteorite is about 4 billion years old. The youngest one is only a few million years old so these rocks cover quite a range in ages. A part of the work going on around the world is to understand just what the history of the planets actually is, and study of the rocks that come to us from space forms a very important part of this, it's science in action.
That's all for this month, enjoy the night sky.

Aries: Saturn in Pisces sees to it that the heavy baggage you have been carrying can be dumped. Releasing all that pent up energy frees you to take a look at subconscious issues and look within to get the answers that you need.
Taurus: The New Moon Solar Eclipse in Virgo allows you to take on some of those little things that mean so much; but somehow got missed out on lately. Mid month the Sun transits in Virgo and your life improves to give you equilibrium.
Gemini: Mighty planet of Invention, Uranus, retrogrades from your sign. Do not worry if things slow down, this is a normal reaction to retro action. Use this time wisely, calm, and don’t be in a hurry to make any decisions you may regret!
Cancer: Mars in Scorpio intensifies passion and drive. Work on self love, look at resources you now need and see whatever comes next this month. See changes that are coming your way that will see you enjoying a transformation.
Leo: Mercury colludes with Libra this month. Free thinking and trust will best reveal to you the true and beautiful full understanding that you have in a relationship with someone close to you. Nothing should spoil this, don’t let it!
Virgo: The New Moon in Virgo is also a partial Solar Eclipse. Both Mercury and the Sun also convene in your house. Communication has been stifled for a reason, not of your making, just when it was getting somewhere. Don’t give up!
Libra: The month begins with the Sun in Libra. Don’t worry that you have to dig and delve for the answers that you truly seek. Specifics matter, and you are about to find out what’s really behind a request that comes from out of the blue.
Scorpio: Late in the month mighty warrior planet Mars is in Scorpio and backing you right to the hilt. Together with Neptune a time of creativity builds empathy and though you can forgive, you certainly don’t have to ever forget!
Sagittarius: Venus and Leo combine energies to bring you love, passion and desire. If this is not a new love, and it could well be, then the rekindling of an existing relationship is out there on the cards. Open your heart and be free.
Capricorn: Seems as if you have been walking on broken glass! Go behind the scenes to find a solution and discover the sad truth of what’s going on right now. Something just doesn’t seem to add up and the truth must be told!
Sagittarius: The Full Moon Total Eclipse is in Pisces. Changes are already forcing you to take a side: but you don’t have to. After all it isn’t you who is to blame and someone is being economical with what is a sad truth!
Pisces: Energies of the Solar Eclipse in your sign see you under the influence of a warring Mars. Neptune your planetary leader backs you all the way, but check finances, tighten your belt and make economies wherever you can.

U3A Calpe held an informal extra Coffee session at the Ifach Hotel as president, Dorothy Warner, thought there may be a couple of people who don't travel away in August and might like a get together. Instead of a few people 24 arrived to spend a morning in the air conditioned foyer. Most welcome!
Those present were given a preview of the events this autumn and people immediately signed up for their favourite outings. We welcomed two new members and several people went on to lunch afterwards.
U3A Calpe starts autumn events with a coffee morning at the Tennis Club on Friday 5th September. Visit our website www.u3acalpe.org for more information.
The next meeting will take place on 14th of October in the Club de Tenis, Calpe, at 10.30hrs. There will be a representative of the Calpe Cruz Roja giving advice on basic first aid, and such things as how to spot the signs of someone starting to have a heart attack. Coffee will be offered to the members. New members are always welcome. Our website, afpocalpe.com gives daily news up-dates, both local and International. There are enough clothes on the planet to dress the next seven generations - yet we keep buying more. Daadi, a bold new fashion movement based in Costa Blanca, Spain, is saying enough and flipping the script on consumption with its unique clothes swapping concept. More than just second-hand shopping, Daadi is a system that measures impact. Customers bring pre-loved clothes, choose new-to-them items, and return coloured tags that help track how much clothing is being saved from landfill. Since February, Daadi has saved over 64,000 kg of CO₂ - that’s the equivalent of driving a car around the Earth six times - simply by reducing the demand for new production.
Founder Lauren Staton explains, “Our goal isn’t to sell more clothes - it’s to move clothes on. We track the items swapped, not sold. Every garment rehomed is a win for the planet.”
Daadi’s shops in Jalon and Moraira have become community hubs where women swap stories as well as outfits. Weekly workshops turn discarded fabrics into bags, gifts, and decorations, further proving that nothing needs to go to waste. Whether you’re on a budget, want to live more sustainably, or just love fashion with a story, Daadi welcomes you with open arms (and open wardrobes). Join the movement, dress mindfully, and be part of something that truly fits the future. Follow @daadiclothelesswaps or visit www.daadi.org

As the heat of summer begins to ease, I can’t help but feel excited. Soon, cooler days will return, and with them, the perfect opportunity to get outside, hike, walk, talk, and connect again.
Are you feeling isolated? A bit stagnant in life? Getting out in nature – walking, talking, and sharing time with others – can be the perfect antidote. Don’t be shy. We’re a friendly, welcoming group of likeminded people all looking to improve our way of life.
For me, walking has never been just about the physical benefits – although moving our bodies is essential. It’s about connection. Connection to nature, to others, and most importantly, to ourselves. That’s the heart of Walk Your Way Well. Our community brings together people who want to share moments, conversations, and experiences. Some of our events are about fitness, others focus on food, and many explore wellness from different angles – but all are designed to feed both body and mind. I believe fitness of the mind is just as important as fitness of the body, and I aim to create spaces where both can thrive.
If you’d like to hear about upcoming walks, hikes, and events, I have a WhatsApp group where I share the latest news and opportunities to join in. Simply add +34 676 507 791 and say hello. You can also connect with me on Facebook or Instagram at Walk Your Way Well for updates, photos, and inspiration.
In addition to community events, I offer one-on-one and group coaching as a qualified Positive Psychology Coach. I also work with companies to design corporate wellness days, and I’m available for private sessions tailored to individual needs.
Whether we’re sharing a sunrise hike, a nourishing meal, or a deep conversation under the shade of a tree, walking together is much more than walking – it’s about walking your way to connection, growth, and a happier, healthier you.
