Clear Vision for Life: Understanding Cataracts and the Importance of Regular Eye Tests

Our eyes are our windows to the world - yet many of us take our vision for granted until something begins to cloud it. One of the most common causes of vision problems, especially as we age, is cataracts. At Seepoint Ópticas in Jávea, we believe that awareness and early detection are key to maintaining healthy eyesight and preventing unnecessary vision loss.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract occurs when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, making it difficult to see clearly. This clouding often develops slowly over time and can affect one or both eyes. Common symptoms include blurred or hazy vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to bright light, and seeing “halos” around lights.

While age and excessive UV exposure are the most common causes of cataracts (another reason why it is so important to have proper UV protection sunglasses), smoking or prolonged use of certain medications can develop cataracts more quickly. Fortunately, cataracts can be successfully treated with surgery - but early detection is essential to ensure the best outcome.

Why Regular Eye Tests Matter

Many eye conditions, including cataracts, develop gradually and painlessly. Regular eye examinations allow opticians to detect early changes before you even notice symptoms. At Seepoint Ópticas, our professional team uses advanced diagnostic tools to check not only your vision but also the overall health of your eyes. Eye tests can reveal signs of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even systemic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. By catching these problems early, you can take steps to protect your sight and general well-being.

Prioritise Your Vision Today

Good eyesight enriches every aspect of life - from enjoying Jávea’s stunning coastline to recognising the smiles of loved ones. Scheduling routine eye exams, especially from the age of 40 onwards, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to safeguard your vision.

At Seepoint Ópticas Jávea, we’re committed to helping you see clearly and live confidently. Book your comprehensive eye test today and take the first step toward a brighter, clearer future. Your eyes deserve the best - trust Seepoint Ópticas to keep them healthy and focused on what truly matters.

The local Moors and Christians celebrations sounded like they were taking place in our apartment as one of the main groups this year have their 'kabila' under our block. We were very pleased to move out to darling daughter's and great for them being in the middle of all the action.

Gorgeous granddaughter headed the girls of their Kabila for part of the procession - such a proud Grandma moment. Each year is better than the last and Calpe Moors and Christians Association really do the town proud.

Next year our grandson is a Festero and the Kabila they belong to has the Capitania so we will be moving out for two weeks. It's like a little mini holiday away, but we were glad to get back. Not sure about the dog though, she enjoyed the company of their dog and the garden with so many good cat smells.

This month there is so much to do with Christmas fairs, concerts, Benidorm's infamous fancy dress parade to name a few, there really is something for everyone.

I am trying to get everything organised early for Christmas but before starting I have had a long hard talk to myself about how many puddings and tubs of chocolates are really needed when it is just the two of us for most of the holidays....

Until next time, take care and be kind.

Proudly Presents A Floral Christmas With NAFAS Demonstrator Lynne Sharpe

Lynne first came to demonstrate for us two years ago, and we were delighted when she agreed to come back and do our Christmas Demonstration.

Lynne comes from the North Midlands Area of NAFAS and won best in show at Belvoir Flower and Garden Show in 2022. With a love and wealth of knowledge of plant material, Lynn is a creative and inspiring floral artist, who happily shares her skills and knowledge with her audience, along with tips and ideas. She loves re-cycling and up-cycling items from car boot sales, which often feature in some of her demonstrations. As this will be a Christmas themed demonstration there will be some glitz and glitter along the way. All Lynne’s exhibits will be raffled at the end of the afternoon so there will be some very happy folks leaving the theatre with one of her seasonal arrangements. There will be extra flowers, and of course we couldn't let the festive season pass without a glass of bubbles and a mince pie. We will also be drawing the lucky winners of our Christmas Hamper Raffle and other prizes, and there will be an opportunity to buy raffle tickets on the day.

Our doors will open at 2.15pm, The NAFAS MOTTO is 'Friendship Through Flowers' so come along promptly, enjoy a glass of cava, buy your raffle tickets and chat with other guests and make new friends until the demonstration starts at 3pm.

Entrance is 10€ and the demonstration takes place in The Salon Actos, La Senieta, Moraira.

ALL WELCOME, for further information check out our website www.marinaaltafloralclub.com and you can also follow us on Facebook.

Spanish Mortgages Explained – Key Tips from Experts

If you’re thinking about buying property in Spain, understanding the mortgage process is crucial to your success. In a recent webinar hosted by My Lawyer in Spain, Alex was joined by Katherine from A Place in the Sun Mortgages/Founding Partner at Mortgage Direct, sharing her expertise from over 20 years in the Spanish market. Here’s what you need to know if you’re an international buyer looking to secure a Spanish mortgage in 2025.

Why Use a Spanish Mortgage Broker?

Many international buyers in Spain face challenges with language barriers, unfamiliar banking systems, or uncertainty about who offers the best deals. A good mortgage broker provides a bridge between you and over 20 Spanish and international lenders, helping you discover the best options, save on interest rates, and avoid pitfalls. Brokers secure preferential rates thanks to large case volumes and can guide you from the start of your property search until the keys are in your hand, ensuring a smooth and transparent process.

Fees, Regulation, and Transparency

Most Spanish mortgage brokers only charge a fee if you move forward with the mortgage application. With A Place in the Sun Mortgages / Mortgage Direct, this is as low as €695, refundable if your quoted conditions can’t be met. On approval, there’s typically a 0.6% fee of the mortgage amount, with a €1,500 minimum – lower than many competitors. Spanish law now requires brokers to be regulated, registered, and fully transparent about costs, providing clients with at least three official quotes (unless the client only qualifies with one or two banks only).

continued on next page

When to Apply and What You’ll Need

Applying early is vital. Mortgage approval depends on your net income, outgoings, and debts, not just a simple multiplier of your salary. Generally, only up to a third of your monthly net income (after subtracting existing debts and mortgages) can go toward a Spanish mortgage repayment. Expect to provide tax returns, payslips, bank statements, and an official credit report from your home country. For buyers wanting a term to age 75/80 and if the majority of the mortgage term is past age 65/67, banks increasingly check for sufficient pension income.

How Much Can You Borrow?

Non-residents can generally borrow up to 70% of the property purchase price or valuation, whichever is lower, although a bank has recently allowed up to 75%. If you’re a fiscal resident or first-time buyer, you might access as much as 80–90%. Note that for properties under €100,000, the upper borrowing limit is usually 60%.

Costs, Taxes, and Deposit Requirements

Property buying costs in Spain vary by region. For example, Andalucia buyers should budget 10% on top of the property price, while in Valencia it can be 13%. These costs must be covered with your own cash. Usually, buyers need at least 40% of the purchase price in savings to cover the deposit and associated buying costs.

Fixed, Variable, or Mixed Rate Mortgages?

Spain’s fixed-rate mortgages are highly popular, currently offered as low as 2.5–3% for the entire term, suiting buyers wanting stability. Variable-rate options track the Euribor plus a margin, with flexible pre-payment terms, while new mixed products offer a fixed-rate period followed by a variable rate. Today, more than 90% of non-resident clients opt for fixed rates due to their predictability and, whilst penalties are higher than for variable rate products, they are still considered low compared to other countries.

COSY WINTER LIVING STARTS HERE

Yorkshire Linen now has 20 years' experience in home furnishing. Both our shops in Jávea and Moraira-Benitachell have everything you need to make your home comfortable for this winter.

Electric Blankets

An electric blanket is cheaper than a heater because using an electric blanket to warm the bed would mean you wouldn’t need to heat the entire room while you sleep. Try and set it at a reasonable temperature to keep the costs down even further and stop you roasting during the night. Alternatively, you could also just turn it off once you’ve put your head down.

Curtains and Blinds

All curtains are really useful for all sorts of reasons. Apart from adding atmosphere to a room, there are weather reasons. For example, if it’s windy and/or raining outside heat loss from the home will increase. Blinds are great for blocking out all or some light and for privacy.

Most types of curtains do help. Black out curtains all year round have proven to be excellent on energy saving (and keeping your house cool during the warm months). Open curtains on bright, sunny days to let the sun’s natural heat filter through your windows and close them on overcast days and always at night. (In-house seamstress service available).

Duvets with matching pillow cases, blankets, toppers, bed protectors, rugs, towels... the list is endless at Yorkshire Linen!

Come and see our Winter Collection in either our Jávea or Moraria-Benitachell shops. We have everything you need from indoors to outdoors to make big or small changes to your home or rental and our multi-lingual staff are always available to help you in any way they can.

Stroke Survivors Peer Support group

The Stroke Survivors Peer Support group is just starting out in La Marina Alta and aims to provide a safe, confidential space for people to share their lived experiences.

Survivors, family, partners and friends are welcome and we understand that every stroke is different; it is a life-changing event with long-reaching effects, physical, emotional and psychological and can feel very isolating.

We would like to invite you to come along to share your lived experience, talk to others who understand or perhaps you are able to offer emotional support to other survivors and/or their family/partners and share useful tips that may aid recovery.

We will be meeting at 12.30 - 2.30pm on the last Tuesday of every month starting September at HELP Activities Centre, Avda. Oeste 29, La Xara 03709. Call HELP on 966 427 044 or contact Marie on 656 916 653 through WhatsApp or call.

Exhibition of Bobbin Lace and Copper Jewellery Casa de la Cultura, Ondara (November

8–22)

From the bobbin to the jewel with a copper core

This exhibition presents a dialogue between tradition and innovation. Once used to create delicate linen or silk lace, the centuries-old technique of bobbin lace now takes new form in contemporary jewellery. The showcased collection - bracelets, rings, earrings, pendants, and brooches - combines the intricate precision of handcraft with the strength and warmth of copper. Copper, one of humanity’s earliest metals, bridges past and present.

Valued since the Copper and Bronze Ages for its malleability and durability, it now becomes the core of modern artistic expression. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, copper holds vital biological importance: it supports red blood cell formation, iron absorption, collagen production, and antioxidant defence, helping maintain skin, nerves, and immunity.

Each piece in the exhibition is presented as a small work of art, where the lightness of lace meets the solidity of metal. Carefully illuminated displays highlight the craftsmanship, detail, and uniqueness of every design. The exhibition is a testament to how traditional arts endure through reinvention - handmade work remains timeless, only its form evolves.

The pieces are available for purchase during the exhibition or through XADA DESIGNS.

Ciudad Patricia Exhibition

On Friday, November 28, and Saturday, November 29, Apartamentos Ciudad Patricia will once again organise an exhibition as last year it became clear that many of our residents are very artistic and some have even had lessons from masters in the arts.

During these days, paintings, sculptures, and handmade (Christmas) cards will be exhibited and available for sale. Costa Blanca Flowers will also be present on Friday to give creative workshops.

On Friday, November 28, the exhibition will be open from 3pm to 5pm, and on Saturday, November 29, from 11am to 4pm.

The exhibition will take place in the lounge of the main building (Edificio Central), Calle Rumania 26. There is plenty of free parking available.

During the exhibition, our bar will also be open for a drink and a small snack. Here is an example of some of the work which will be on show.

We look forward to seeing you.

Klein-Schreuder Sculpture Garden Exhibition

Starting November 2, we will be exhibiting works by Jorge Castro Flórez in the sculpture garden. The artist passed away in 2011; the exhibition is a collaboration with Coral Pastor, director of the private collection of his art.

Jorge Castro Flórez strove to give form and presence to life by conveying its anguish and joy in his sculptures. Not only bronze, but also materials such as marble, clay, copper, and iron yielded to his inexhaustible inspiration.

The biography of Jorge Castro Flórez is interwoven with many life experiences, but above all with the wonder and long journeys of his youth and the path he walked with his inseparable companion Micheline Bermúdez. For a long time, he used to bury his hands in plaster to sketch images of everything that bothered him or that he loved to dream about.

In addition to the temporary exhibition, two of Jorge's sculptures are also on display in our permanent exhibition. Admission is €5, and the exhibition runs until January 7th. For more information, please visit our website: https://klein-schreuder.com/index.php?lang=en

Don’t Miss a Word: Why Regular Hearing Checks Matter After 50

We all know the importance of regular eye tests and dental check-ups - but how often do we think about our hearing? For many people over 50, gradual hearing loss is part of the natural ageing process. It often creeps in so slowly that you might not even notice it’s happening. Yet, just like eyesight or heart health, your hearing deserves the same level of care and attention.

Good hearing is more than just the ability to pick up sounds - it’s about staying connected. It allows us to enjoy conversations, laughter, and music, and to feel part of the world around us. When hearing starts to fade, people often begin to withdraw from social situations. Misunderstandings become more common, background noise makes chatting difficult, and eventually, it can lead to feelings of isolation. Studies have shown that untreated hearing loss can also affect mental sharpness. The brain has to work harder to fill in missing sounds, which can lead to fatigue and cognitive strain. The good news? Early detection makes a huge difference. A simple, free hearing test can reveal potential issues long before they impact your daily life - and modern hearing solutions are now smaller, smarter, and more discreet than ever.

At Hearing Care Costa Blanca, we understand that taking the first step can feel daunting. That’s why we offer friendly, professional consultations designed to help you understand your hearing and your options. Whether it’s a baseline test or personalised advice on the latest hearing technology, our goal is to help you rediscover every word, every note, and every moment. And for your convenience, we provide home visits, bringing our professional hearing care directly to you.

Because life on the Costa Blanca is meant to be heard - from the waves on the shore to the voices of those you love. Don’t miss out. Book your hearing check today and take the first step towards clearer, more confident living.

Facing Your Fear: How to Finally Feel Comfortable at the Dentist

For many people, a trip to the dentist is something they’ll happily postpone for as long as possible. The sound of the drill, the smell of antiseptic, or simply lying back in the chair can stir up a deep sense of unease — and it’s more common than you might think. In fact, dental anxiety affects nearly one in three adults, often leading to years of avoidance and, unfortunately, more complex dental issues later on.

But here’s the good news: modern dentistry has come a long way in understanding and addressing these fears. From gentle communication and relaxation techniques to advanced, pain-free treatments, there are now many ways to make the experience entirely different from what patients remember as children. And for those who are especially anxious, finding the right dentist makes all the difference.

In Jávea, Karen Gardner of Clínica Dental La Plaza has built her reputation on precisely this - helping nervous patients regain confidence in the dentist’s chair. With decades of experience and a naturally calm, compassionate manner, she understands that overcoming dental fear isn’t just about teeth; it’s about trust. “Every patient has a story,” Karen explains. “Taking time to listen is often the first step towards easing their anxiety.” Her approach combines clear explanations, gentle techniques, and a tranquil environment designed to put even the most apprehensive patients at ease. Simple touches — like talking through each step before it happens, using modern pain management, and creating a relaxed atmosphere — can transform the entire experience.

For those who have been putting off a check-up, it’s worth remembering that dental care today is not the ordeal it once was. Whether it’s a routine cleaning, a filling, or cosmetic work, visiting a dentist who truly understands your fears can make all the difference.

So if anxiety has kept you from caring for your smile, it might be time to take that first, gentle step. In Jávea, Clínica Dental La Plaza is the answer - where nervous patients find reassurance, and smiles are restored with kindness and care.

More fab fundraising news from Cancer Care Jávea!

Through the fund-raising efforts of our volunteers and supporters, we finance the Lynwen nursing team, as well as a dedicated translator and patient liaison officer at Denia hospital. But all of this costs serious money – you might be surprised to learn that providing these essential services costs Cancer Care Jávea nearly €100,000 per year.

Cancer Care Jávea works tirelessly to raise funds both through its shops and by holding popular fund-raising events. Our Plaza Summer Festival raised an amazing €1,300, and the Plaza was well and truly in ‘party mode’ with all the local businesses joining in the fun. The cake stall raised over €800 alone - a brilliant result! A big thank-you goes to our models, Mick Dennison, our DJ for the day and Pam’s People, who entertained everyone with their dance routines and made the day even more special. We love you all!

Our fund-raising doesn’t just end in Spain – Aran O’Sheehan cycled 2,500km of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way this summer and raised more than €11,000 (see https://www.facebook. com/aransadventures).

Upcoming events There’s a fab Fashion Show at La Plaza No.6 restaurant on 15 November and an OK Band musical/picnic event on 22 November.

Every penny we raise helps with our running costs. Why not drop in and browse our retail stores? New autumn stocks are arriving at our Cancer Care Boutique in the Plaza Avinguda del Pla 122, Jávea and the Cancer Care Jávea Charity Shop at Avinguda de Paris 8. Our furniture store is in Gata de Gorgos, on the N332, and can be visited on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10.00 and 13.00.

If you’d like to join our fun team of volunteers, we’d love to hear from you. We’re looking for people who can help us with our admin for just a few hours a week. Contact Jeannette Missons at jmmissons@gmail.com.

You can learn more about us at https://cancercarejavea.org. See you soon!

Kenny Corris brings you

Aries: Mars transits Sagittarius fuelling your emotions and arousing your innermost passion and drive for adventure and new beginnings. Positive and inspiring, don’t look back, look forward and if it feels good… do it!

Taurus: This month’s Full Moon, known as the Beaver Moon, is in your second house. The focus is on personal income and all aspects of financial security and stability. You work hard for your money, so, let it now work well for you instead!

Gemini: With the Moon in Pisces and Venus in Scorpio, creativity mixed with intuition will see you through. A new relationship is intensified with a deepening of your commitment and it finally seems right to take things further.

Cancer: Midmonth: Venus is in Libra squaring Jupiter in Cancer. This is a time to chill, take it easy and relax after a few hectic weeks. Indulge yourself as a reward for your endeavours, knowing that you deserve this special time for you.

Leo: As the Moon is in Leo it’s time for you to say exactly how you are, and let your dreams, wishes and desires become a reality. Self expression is just you telling it how it is; so lay down the ground rules and you’ll feel even better.

Virgo: Uranus squares up to your Fixed Node. Surely a red letter month, any power struggles brought about by others serve to see you working hands on with your destiny; which now will finally work with you and not against you in any way.

OUR OROSCOPE

Libra: The Sun in Scorpio allows you time to concentrate on prioritising your devotion and love on someone who is attracted to you. This bonding process will determine so much and let it guide you onwards to just where you should be.

Scorpio: The New Moon in your sign later on in the month heralds beginnings, new horizons and renewal. Your spiritual energies are growing and are guiding you onwards to your true destiny. If it feels right this month, it probably is!

Sagittarius: Your planetary leader, Jupiter, is starting retrograde in Cancer this month. Initially things need to slow down somewhat, but you will now be wanting to look within to see what’s going on. Be open to sudden changes.

Capricorn: Vesta is in your sign this month. The focus is on goals, old and new and some hard work that you have yet to finish. You’ll get all the help that you need, so start the process and see who comes along to be at your side.

Aquarius: The Uranus sextile with Neptune thrives on creativity and highlights a need for spiritual growth. Uranus, planet of invention, is quick on the mark and set to surprise you and reward you for a recent job done well.

Pisces: Neptune, your planetary leader is invincibly powerful but spiritually enabling and understanding. Dreamy and mystic, your own psychic energies are opening to make positive change where needed, and love guides you on!

The year is starting to round up, I can’t believe it, the gardens are just starting to green up, after some well-deserved rain.

I have just dealt with a design client who needs their garden landscaping. As part of the landscaping design there is of course, grass. My suggestion to the client as a designer who knows the area and has worked within the gardening community for 25 years, was to obviously go with artificial grass. The client has decided against this advice and wants natural grass.

I cannot advise people enough on this matter, if you are wanting to redesign your garden, if you are wanting to put grass where it currently doesn’t exist, my 100% honest advice is go with artificial grass. I can, and probably have, bored people in my articles many times over telling them the reasons as to why to not have natural grass. I have explained too many times to repeat now; I don’t want to send people to sleep. So, I will say this. I understand what preconceived ideas and thoughts most people have about artificial grass. So, if you are a client looking at installing a natural lawn, then by all means contact me, ask me questions and let me give you the information you actually need to know. I can guarantee when you know the truth of the matter, (not just pointless chatter from the internet), actual facts that pertain particularly to here, I think I can turn your opinion, and if I don’t it will certainly make you think twice. So again, if you are considering installing a lawn, please feel free to contact us, we are very up to explaining the truth and facts about artificial grass, and to those who have already made the sensible decision to look for an artificial grass company then you have certainly found the right one. Give us a call and join the list of scores if not hundreds of clients who enjoy our product everyday and have done for years.

Artificial Grass Spain, the Costa Blancas leading artificial grass company.

Margaret bids farewell as President for the overall European Union of Women, and Headquarters in Brussels and continues her legacy of relentless advocacy for equality, empowerment and progress here, with the European Union, Marina Alta.

Inspirational, leadership, guidance and commitment were some of the wonderful words used at an event to honour the many years that Margaret Hales had led the European Union of Women. First elected in 2012 as Vice President she became President in 2017 and finally retired in September of this year. The local group of EUW, based in Benitachell (EUWMA), surprised Margaret and her husband Gerald with a celebration which ended with a song - sung by the whole committee'dressed in green' (the colour of EUW).

'I am amazed and humbled by your kind words and presents and flowers', she said 'It has been an incredible journey for me, especially as a Brit leading a European organisation, and this celebration means a lot to me and my husband who has supported me every step in my journey'.

Margaret will continue as President of the Marina Alta group and said she looked forward to a full programme of events in November working with women's groups in the Marina Alta. The next meeting of EUWMA will be during that week when the world campaigns for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The meeting event entitled 'We reclaim the night’ is on 27 November at the Javea Golf Club Javea at 10am. A presentation and active demonstration by Mikelo Signes, twotime Spanish tai chi champion will be followed by a discussion on international initiatives to make women’s lives safer. For information about EUWMA, see the website www.euwmarinaalta.org, email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com or visit Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/euwma.

Walk Your Way Well

So, how was Sober October? Did you glide through it glowing, hydrated, and annoyingly perky - or did you find yourself whispering sweet nothings to a glass of wine by week two? No judgement here. Taking a break from alcohol can be both enlightening and surprisingly tricky.

But here’s the truth: you don’t have to wait for October to roll around again. You can hit pause on drinking any time you like. Think of it as giving your mind, body, and soul a mini-holiday - a chance to see how good you can feel without the fog. Alcohol can be sneaky. It sells us the story of relaxation, connection, and funthen quietly steals our sleep, mood, energy, and motivation. Even a short break can improve clarity, lower anxiety, and give you that delicious “I’ve got my sparkle back” feeling.

And when cravings strike? Walk it off. Seriously. Lace up, step outside, and take a stomp. Walking boosts dopamine, clears the head, and gives you a real buzz - minus the hangover.

This isn’t about perfection or labels. It’s about curiosity. What happens when you give your body a break? When you experience socialising, relaxing, or celebrating without alcohol in the mix? When Saturday mornings feel fresh and full of possibility again?

As part of my Alcohol-Free Coaching sessions, I help people explore these questions with compassion, humour, and honesty - often while walking together outdoors. It’s not therapy; it’s connection, reflection, and small steps towards habit change.

So here’s to clear heads, calm mornings, and the courage to get curious. Whether it’s Sober October or No in November - there’s no bad time to take a break and walk your way well.

Puerto de Xàbia 58 Masonic Lodge Installs New Master

On Tuesday, 14th October, members of the Puerto de Xàbia 58 Masonic Lodge gathered to celebrate the installation of Nick Coates as the new Master of the Lodge.

It is a long-standing tradition within Masonic Lodges for one of the most senior members to be elected annually as Master, taking on the responsibility of leading the Lodge’s activities and community initiatives.

Nick Coates, a resident of Spain for many years, has been a member of the Puerto de Xàbia 58 Lodge for over two decades. This marks the second occasion on which he has been chosen to serve as Master, having previously held the position in 2016-17.

Upon his appointment, Mr Coates commented: “I am honoured to be elected Master of the Lodge once again, and I look forward to continuing the excellent work in support of the local community, as carried out by my predecessor, John Young.”
