Varifocal lenses have become an essential solution for people who need clear vision at multiple distances without constantly changing glasses. However, the quality of the lens makes a significant difference in comfort, clarity, and longterm satisfaction.
The Importance of Lens Quality
Not all varifocal lenses are created equal. Lower-quality lenses may have limited viewing zones, noticeable distortions, or poor adaptation rates. High-quality varifocals, on the other hand, minimise distortions and maximise clarity, making everyday activities much more comfortable. This is why choosing lenses from reputable manufacturers is crucial.
Our trusted brands Hoya and Pentax
Two of the most respected names in the industry are Hoya and Pentax. Hoya, founded in Japan has grown into one of the world’s leading optical lens manufacturers, their reputation is built on advanced technology, precision engineering, and continuous innovation. Pentax, also originating from Japan, has long been recognised for its expertise in optics, not only in eyewear but also in cameras and precision instruments.
The Advantage of Personalised Varifocal Design.
One of the most important developments in modern varifocal technology is personalised lens design. Now we can say a truly tailored design just for you, instead of relying on standard “off-the-shelf” designs, advanced lenses such as our Tailor Made Plus, Select and Select Plus ranges use highly specific wearer measurements to optimise performance, these measurements include the exact position of the frame on your face, Pupillary distance, and other measurements that add to create a truly tailored lens, personalised varifocals reduce distortion, expand the usable vision zones, and make adaptation much easier. The result is a lens that feels natural and provides sharper vision in all directions.
While budget lenses may be tempting, the difference in comfort and clarity is significant, We believe investing in good quality varifocal lenses is truly essential for maintaining the health and benefit of your vision, and that’s why we help by offering the best quality and technology in lenses with prices that are hard to miss out on, from your 2 for 1 where you pay one pair and get another free or, the great offer of 50% off for over 50’s on one pair. By providing these options, we make it easier to prioritise your eye health and experience the benefits of superior lens quality without compromising your budget.
Your home is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s your safe place, your comfort zone, and often your most valuable asset. That’s why it deserves the very best protection. At Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, we proudly recommend Generali’s fully comprehensive house policy.
When it comes to home insurance, it’s not just about having a policy, it’s about having the right policy. Many homeowners assume they’re fully covered, only to discover the gaps when making a claim. For example, in Spain the kitchen is classed as contents, not buildings, meaning you need to get your contents cover right to avoid nasty surprises.
Optional extras such as accidental damage are also worth considering, as they cover everyday mishaps like broken windows, damaged furniture, or dropped devices.
Another valuable feature is cover for leak detection and repair, plus excess water consumption, subject to terms and conditions. This can make all the difference in preventing costly surprises from hidden leaks or burst pipes. At Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, we go further than just arranging your policy. Our knowledgeable consultants take time to guide you, helping you decide which level of cover best suits your individual needs. We also have our own dedicated claims advisors to support you if something goes wrong, and a renewal team to review your policy each year and ensure your cover remains up to date.
We also offer a wide range of optional guarantees to give you complete peace of mind, including:
• Dangerous dog liability
• Public liability for mobility vehicles
• Cover for electric vehicle chargers
• Protection against illegal occupation (especially valuable for second homes left empty)
• Unpaid rent protection for landlords
For those with jewellery, artwork, or other valuable possessions, we also provide enhanced protection in the event of theft involving violence.
Don’t miss out on our Cashback Offer!
From 26th August to 24th November 2025, you’ll receive 10% cashback on every new Generali Home or Motor policy paid by Direct Debit. With no limit on the number of policies, cashback is paid directly into your bank account. Minimum premiums apply (€325 Home, €450 Motor) with up to €75 cashback per policy.

I am pleased to say that we all survived the recent hen and stag dos - although the recovery time for myself wasn't overnight.
Unfortunately gone are the days when I could party all night and still function normally the following day, but I guess that comes to us all eventually. I was actually quite surprised that Benidorm wasn't as busy as I expected, especially as it was Pride week...maybe the majority of people were in the old town or maybe we were all tucked up in bed before the crowds came out. We did get to see the parade passing along the seafront promenade which was very colourful, a great atmosphere and all in very good spirits.
Now we are all getting very excited for the impending wedding in just a few weeks time. The majority of the final plans and preparations have been done and it is now a case of sitting back and enjoying the build up and the day itself. I know it is going to be a very emotional but extremely proud day for us all, and I will be well equipped with my waterproof mascara and tissues at the ready. We have some family and friends travelling over from the UK so it will also be nice to see them and catch up as it has been a while since we were last together. Happy times are ahead for us all!!!!
Until next time ….

On the evening of Monday 11th August 2025 a traffic accident occurred which resulted in tragic life changing events for 17 year old Marcos, son of Darren & Rebecca Jones (known to most as Darren the Barber).
Marcos took the full force of the impact and was trapped in the back of the vehicle. He had to be freed from the vehicle by the emergency services and unfortunately had to have his arm amputated to save his life. His speedy recovery rate, braveness and positivity has astounded his family, although there are still many hospital appointments to attend, and obviously some days for Marcos are better than others.... there is still a long road ahead. Marcos would like to return to college, but a holiday is hopefully going to be one of the first things to happen when the time is right.
The family are flabbergasted by all the support and sincere wishes, and would like to express their appreciation to everyone that has helped. Whether that be with kind words and well wishes or generosity through fund raising – it all means so much to them. A gofundme page https://gofund.me/951bca3b9 has been set up to help with any financial burdens and to give Marcos a brighter future. Friends, local businesses, residents, and clients of both Darren & Rebecca have all given generously and recently the golfers, staff and customers from Jolly's Bar in Quesada arranged a fund raising day (in 3 days) and raised a massive 4,000€. The intention is to help Marcos regain his independence and once he is able and ready, pay for driving lessons and eventually an adapted car to suit his needs.
This now all looks possible due to the local communities' help – currently the amount raised on gofundme has reached over 23,000€!!!! Even a million thank yous wouldn't be enough to express the gratitude felt.

Spain’s new traffic signs are finally hitting the roads. Approved in July 2025, they are now being introduced step by step - first in urban areas and especially where signs relate to electric mobility and Low Emission Zones (ZBE).
At Generali Expatriates, we want to keep you up to date with the latest changes so you can stay safe and well informed. Key updates you’ll notice
• Electric mobility
New signs mark charging points for electric vehicles.
• Personal mobility vehicles
Clearer symbols show where e-scooters and similar devices are permitted - or banned, such as on pavements, interurban roads, and motorways.
• Road safety
Fresh warnings include wild animals (like wild boar), reduced visibility zones, and even aerial speed checks by drones or helicopters.
• Traffic management
Look out for signals marking 2+1 lanes (two lanes in one direction, one in the other) and improved combined pedestrian–cyclist crossings.
Why it matters
The new signs are designed to:
• Improve visibility with clearer shapes and contrasts.
• Adapt to modern mobility trends.
• Enhance safety by addressing today’s risks.
• Ensure consistency across Europe.
You can consult the full catalogue of signs on the CNAE (Confederación Nacional de Autoescuelas) website. The DGT has indicated that the new content will only be included in theory exams when updated training manuals are available, ensuring candidates have enough time to prepare properly.
Stay protected as roads evolve
Even with clearer signs, accidents and breakdowns can happen.
At Generali Expatriates, our car insurance is designed to keep you safe with:
• 24/7 roadside assistance in English through a freephone number
• Clear, reliable support in your language whenever you need it
And what's more, from 26 August to 24 November 2025, enjoy 10% cashback on new car or home insurance policies paid by direct debit.
Visit www.generaliexpatriates.es for full details or call 91 342 25 49.
Stay alert, learn the changes - and drive with confidence knowing you’re well covered.
Art has no age limit. In fact, some of the most inspiring journeys I’ve witnessed begin not in youth, but in retirement. Many of my students are discovering - or rediscovering - painting at a stage in life where they finally have the time and freedom to explore their creativity. Each week, I welcome adults into my studio with one simple promise: that art belongs to everyone. You don’t need experience to start; you only need curiosity. Many arrive saying, “I can’t draw a straight line,” but soon find themselves confidently filling canvases with colour, light, and energy. My role is to guide, encourage, and open doors - not only to technique, but to seeing the world in new ways.
For my students, painting often becomes much more than a hobby. It’s a chance to slow down, connect with others, and enjoy the satisfaction of making something with their own hands. My classes often feel like a small community: conversations flow as brushes move, laughter fills the room, and there’s a sense of shared joy when someone stands back and sees their finished painting.
As a practicing artist, I bring my own passion into the studio. My work is rooted in atmosphere and emotion, and I encourage my students to paint with that same openness - to notice the play of light, the movement of the sky, the feeling behind a subject. The most rewarding part of teaching is watching people surprise themselves. When a student says, “I never thought I could do this,” it’s a moment of pure pride - for them, and for me.

Firstly, what is a galaxy? It's a huge conglomeration of stars held together by gravity. Often, but certainly not always they are in a big spiral, the shape so beloved by science fiction film makers.
How many stars are in a galaxy? This really is a difficult question, our galaxy, the Milky Way has somewhere around 300 million stars, our neighbour the Andromeda galaxy has over 1 trillion stars, it's a big beggar. There are also plenty of galaxies with less than 1000 stars so size doesn't come into the description, it's only whether the star group is held together by gravity.
Is it difficult to see a galaxy? Well that's another tricky question, it all depends on where and when you go looking. If you live somewhere with truly dark clear skies it's remarkably easy to see the Andromeda galaxy. Looking north east about halfway up the sky you'll see a faint blurry blob, this is it, now try looking with binoculars or a telescope with only around 20x magnification and you'll get a much better view. Please be aware that to the naked eye it will never look anything like it does in a photograph, a photo stores a great many pictures together to build up the wonderful images we see.
How big and how far away is Andromeda? When you're looking at it in the sky it might seem to take up about the same amount of area as a full moon, buts that's only under perfect conditions and for young people with exceptional eyesight. For most of us it will be a lot less than that. You are looking at something that's 2,5 million light years away from us, or to put it another way, you are looking back in time 2.5 million years. When the light set off that we are seeing, homo sapiens didn't really exist, we were just an early branch of one of many proto humans.
Given that Andromeda is one of the nearest galaxies to Earth and is just one of over a trillion, you might begin to get some idea of just how vast space is.
If you enjoy looking at Andromeda, you might also try and find the Triangulum spiral galaxy it's not far from Andromeda. Just look down and to the right. This is the third biggest galaxy in our local group after Andromeda and our milky way. Lastly the double cluster galaxies between Perseus and Cassiopeia are well worth finding.
That's all for this month, dark skies to you all.

The Costa Blanca is set to sparkle this autumn as Expo Torrevieja 2025 returns for a very special edition on the weekend of Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th November. And this year, we’re going bigger than ever - literally.
For the first time, the Expo will fill two entire floors, giving visitors twice the space, twice the variety, and twice the fun to discover. Even better, entry is completely free, making it the perfect weekend outing for everyone.
So what’s in store? At its heart, Expo Torrevieja is all about celebrating the best of our town and region. Across the two levels, you’ll find local businesses showcasing their products and services - everything from food and lifestyle to innovation and homegrown talent. It’s a brilliant chance to meet the people behind the businesses you know, and to uncover some new favourites along the way.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Expo Torrevieja without a touch of seasonal magic. The craft and Christmas fair will also be bigger than ever, bursting with handmade gifts, festive decorations, and unique treasures you simply won’t find on the high street. Whether you’re getting ahead with your Christmas shopping or just enjoying a browse, it’s the perfect way to soak up the festive spirit.
But the Expo isn’t only about shopping - it’s about community. This year, local charities, clubs and organisations will also play a central role, sharing their incredible work and giving visitors the chance to connect, learn, and support. It’s this mix of commerce, creativity, and compassion that makes the Expo such a highlight on Torrevieja’s calendar.
And don’t forget the attractions. With family-friendly entertainment, live radio from Big FM, interactive stands, and plenty to see and do across both floors, there really is something for everyone. Whether you’re exploring with the kids, catching up with friends, or simply taking yourself on a wander, you’ll find the Expo brimming with energy, ideas, and surprises.
So save the dates: 15th & 16th November 2025. Two floors packed with businesses, crafts, charities, and festive cheer. Free entry for all. And countless reasons to come along and join the fun.
Expo Torrevieja 2025 isn’t just an event - it’s a celebration of everything that makes our community unique. We can’t wait to see you there!
The 9th and 12th of October are two important dates marked by national and regional celebrations
October 9th is celebrated in the Valencian Community as the Day of the Valencian Community (Día de la Comunidad Valenciana). This regional holiday commemorates the entry of King James I of Aragon into the city of Valencia in 1238, ending Muslim rule and marking the foundation of the Christian Kingdom of Valencia. It is a day filled with cultural events, parades, and traditional music. One of the most iconic elements of this day is the “Mocadorà” (or “Mocaorà”), where people give marzipan sweets wrapped in a handkerchief to their loved ones, a tradition that coincides with the regional version of Valentine’s Day.
October 12th is a national holiday across Spain known as Fiesta Nacional de España, or Spain’s National Day. It commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. The date symbolises Spain’s historical global influence and cultural heritage. The most notable celebration is the military parade in Madrid, presided over by the King and attended by top government officials. Spanish flags are prominently displayed, and patriotic events are held nationwide.
October 12th is also observed as Día del Pilar, a religious feast in honour of the Virgin of the Pilar, the patron saint of Zaragoza and of the Spanish Civil Guard. The city of Zaragoza holds large-scale religious processions and festivities lasting several days.
Closer to home Pilar de la Horadada celebrates as it is also the patron saint of the town with flower offerings on the 11th October and a solemn procession on the 12th October. In Callosa de Segura they celebrate with the ‘Romería del Pilar’ a pilgrimage, a deeply rooted popular event. It consists of the transfer of the image of Pilar to its sanctuary in the hills, where a mass is celebrated and the day is spent celebrating before it is returned to the church in the town. Together, the 9th and 12th of October represent a blend of regional pride and national unity, showcasing Spain’s rich cultural diversity and historical legacy.

Roofing Regulations: Adding a roof changes spaces from exterior to interior, except for an open wooden pergola.
Roofing requires an architectural project and licence.
Change of Use: Altering room functions or adding new ones, even detached, demands architect involvement.
Height Challenges: Construction exceeding 1.5 metres mandates a major licence, necessitating a Spanish architect for the building permit. However, a sub-1.5 metre dog kennel remains outside the “built area” classification.
Size and Documentation: Expanding a property’s size, even by a metre, or causing inconsistencies in bills or deeds requires an independent architect’s input.
Light and Air: Spanish rules mandate ventilation and direct light for rooms, except bathrooms. Enclosures blocking these necessitate an architect’s intervention.
Lack Permits? Spanish authorities may impose fines or demolition orders, exceeding 300€ per sqm, even for small structures. Property value and sales can suffer.
Solution: Secure a retrospective licence from a qualified Spanish architect. Unlicenced extensions gain immunity from objections, regardless of future legal changes.
Retrospective Licence Criteria:
Murcia: Extensions aged 4+ years.
Almeria: Building work aged 6+ years.
Alicante: Completed before August 2010. No retro licences for fined or ordered extensions.
Cost: Pool Retrospective Licence: 326.70€ incl. IVA Retrospective Licence for Extensions: 363€ incl. IVA (all property extensions).
Martinez de la Casa Architects excel in Building Certification, including Energy Performance Certificates (121€ inc. VAT), Habitation Licences, and Retrospective Licences.

This summer has been especially busy for the ADAPT Theatre Group as the decision was made to move our annual bilingual pantomime to San Pedro del Pinatar’s brand new theatre Geli Albaladejo. After 14 years of sellout performances in the town’s Casa de Cultura the change will be exciting and full of new technical and artistic challenges. The group’s performances started way back in 2011 when we formed part of the wider ADAPT association whose main aim was to integrate into the local community. We came up with the fun idea of performing Cinderella who had to speak Spanish to marry the prince, thereby introducing ourselves and the crazy world of panto to San Pedro residents. Since then we have grown into an independent, vibrant group of people who have continued with the same aims while developing our acting, designing and technical skills year by year as well as widening the scope of our audiences.
This year’s pantomime is the ever-loved “Jack and the Beanstalk” and rehearsals have now commenced after months of background preparation. We are thrilled to have some great performers who are already practising their song and dance routines and some very funny people who will make the most of the hilarious script.
The performances of Jack and the Beanstalk will be on 28th November at 7pm and 29th November at 12 noon and 7pm at the Geli Albaladejo Theatre, Avda de los Flamencos, San Pedro del Pinatar. Tickets will be available soon or can be reserved now by WhatsApp or phone to Eric on 656 361 098.
