Many people assume that eye tests are only necessary when they notice changes in their vision. However, routine eye examinations can detect far more than just sight loss - they’re a vital health check that can uncover a range of conditions, often before any symptoms appear.
At Seepoint Opticas in Jávea, the experienced team of optometrists encourages everyone to prioritise their eye health with regular check-ups. With state-of-the-art equipment and a personalised approach, they’re committed to identifying problems early and supporting long-term wellbeing.
Eye tests can reveal common refractive issues like shortsightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism, but they also play a crucial role in spotting signs of more serious health conditions. These include glaucoma - a condition that can cause irreversible vision loss if undetected - and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which affects the central part of vision and is one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults.
Cataracts, which cloud the eye's natural lens, can also be diagnosed during a routine test, even before they noticeably affect vision. In addition, eye exams can highlight signs of systemic health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure, often through changes in the blood vessels of the retina.
Children and young adults can also benefit greatly from regular eye tests, as undiagnosed vision problems may impact learning and development. Similarly, people over 60 or with a family history of eye conditions are particularly encouraged to attend routine checks.
Seepoint Opticas offers FREE comprehensive eye examinations in a welcoming environment, ensuring every patient receives tailored advice and care. Their knowledgeable team not only assesses vision but also takes the time to explain the results and any next steps, whether that involves prescription glasses, further testing, or simply peace of mind.
Maintaining healthy vision is an essential part of overall health. Booking a regular eye test at Seepoint Opticas is a simple yet powerful way to stay informed, detect problems early, and protect one of your most important senses - your sight.
Town halls across Spain are introducing enforcement measures aimed at responsible pet ownership. Dog owners who fail to follow updated regulations could face substantial fines. These rules now require that certain dogs be kept on a lead in public spaces, be microchipped, and properly registered. Additionally, owners must clean up after their dogs!
Fines will also be issued for failing to register potentially dangerous dogs. These are breeds or mixed breeds that display physical and behavioural traits considered high-risk. Common examples include the Pit Bull, Rottweiler and Doberman. Dogs over 20kg must also wear a muzzle in public, regardless of breed. Each town hall provides an official list and additional guidance, so it’s important for owners to check locally.
To support responsible pet ownership and safeguard against unexpected costs, Jennifer Cunningham offers comprehensive pet insurance offering Immediate Healthcare protection for accidents and emergencies.
You are free to use any licensed vet, anywhere in Spain. The plan accepts any pet from as little as 8 weeks of age, regardless of breed. You can make an unlimited number of claims each year, up to the maximum benefit outlined in your plan.
Vaccinations are a must. Dogs must be protected against certain viruses and illnesses, for example Leishmaniosis, Parvovirus, and Rabies. Cats need cover for Feline Infectious Enteritis, Feline Leukaemia, Cat Flu, and Rabies. A full list is available.
Additional benefits include:
• Boarding kennel and cattery fees if you or your partner are hospitalised for more than 48 hours, offering peace of mind during emergencies.
• With European travel cover for emergency treatment for your
pet when travelling abroad, using any vet of your choice.
If you make a claim, you will be required to pay an excess.
Liability cover is also available. This protects you financially if your pet causes injury or property damage. We can offer standalone cover for dangerous and non dangerous breeds, or add them to your Home policy with us. The policy covers:
• Third-party bodily injury (e.g. dog bites)
• Damage to third-party property
• Legal fees for defending claims
• Euthanasia and death-related costs due to covered injuries
Some exclusions apply depending on the policy, so always read the small print.
Flexible payment plans are available, making it easy to budget for your pet’s ongoing protection.
As Spanish authorities take a firmer stance on animal responsibility, now is the time to review your pet’s legal and health status. Visit your local town hall for full guidance on Dangerous Dog breeds, registration and local laws.

Our trip to Madrid to see Ed Sheeran was great apart from not thinking it through when we booked tickets at the top of the stadium. I suffer from vertigo - what were we thinking. We were literally the last row at the top! This actually turned out to be a good thing in a way as there was a space behind our seats where we sang and danced through the whole concert whilst still being able to see the centre stage. Getting back down the stairs to ground level was not my finest moment although everyone was so helpful. Note to self - only buy ground level tickets for future concerts.
With the weather being so lovely we have already been having salads and something on the BBQ most nights. Up until now I have been able to make the salads interesting enough so there have been no complaints, but if anyone has any suggestions I will be happy to hear them before I run out of ideas.
I am lucky that my family do not come out for the summer, not that I don't want to see them, but I don't have to worry about visiting the beach or places of interest in the heat and at the worst time of year for travelling and finding a parking space. I know when I have to go out I will be leaving in plenty of time, and a bit more.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

My wife is a little astonished that I picked such a bland title for this months dip into astronomy with so many possibilities for digging up bad old schoolboy jokes. I resisted all those temptations so I will proceed to explain why Uranus is such a weird and foreboding place.
I should start with where the name comes from, it's ancient Greek and refers to one of the earliest gods. Although Greek deities all seem a bit weird to us in the 21st century, Uranus was in a league of his own, he was both son and husband to Gaia the Earth goddess and fathered the 12 Titans. One of them, Cronus later castrated Uranus and after that things went downhill a bit. As this is astronomy not mythology I'll just add that Uranus was the god of the heavens which is why we use his name.
I've heard many different pronunciations over the years, mostly by people trying to be polite and not mention bums so here is the correct way, although hardly anyone uses it. Uranus is Greek so pronounce it in ancient Greek, 'Ouranos' that's oo-ran-nohs.
That's quite enough of that, so now for the planet itself. It's the seventh planet from the Sun and a really long way out, only the planet Neptune is further away. It's a gigantic ball of mostly methane, ammonia and water with a soupçon of other noxious substances. Through a telescope it's a barely discernible blueish dot that I first saw when I was 19 years old, and was so unimpressed that it was 50 years before I bothered again. Probably the main reason an amateur will look for it is to know that they've seen all the planets for themselves, and that is an excellent reason. If you want to try for yourself it will be best to wait until later in the year as it's not easily visible to us at the moment. In the first week of September Uranus will be just below the famous Pleiades star cluster.
If Uranus is so boring to look at what makes it so special? All the planets circle around the Sun in the same plane, meaning it's as though they are sitting on a gigantic disk. Each planet spins on its axis, Earth takes one year to do that but all the planets take different times. The axis of each planet is tilted over compared with its orbit, Earth by about 23 degrees (this is why we have seasons) Mars by 25 degrees, Mercury hardly at all, but Uranus is completely different, it's tilted by a whopping 98 degrees, effectively it's flying through space lying on its side.
What can have happened to Uranus to make this happen? We're pretty certain that billions of years ago, probably not long after it was formed, Uranus was hit by another planet similar in size to Earth and the collision knocked it over. It's also likely that a lot of the debris from the impact slowly coalesced together and became Uranus's moons.
I'll finish with a little fun fact, these moons are mostly named after characters in Shakespearian plays instead of those weird Greek gods. So, if anyone tells you that this planet is boring now you'll know which part of their anatomy they're talking from!

Renting out your holiday home in Spain can be a great income source, but it comes with strict legal requirements. With tourism on the rise, regional governments have introduced tighter regulations, and in most cases, a license is mandatory before advertising or renting your property.
Holiday Rentals: A Regulated Activity
Short-term rentals - defined differently across regions - are classified as a commercial activity and are subject to specific regional rules. Each Autonomous Community (e.g., Andalusia, Balearic Islands, Valencia) has its own licensing process and standards.
Is a License Required?
In most areas, yes. You must register your property with the local tourism authority before listing it on platforms like Airbnb or Booking.com. Once registered, you’ll receive a license number which must be included in all ads. Failing to comply can lead to significant fines.
Here’s a brief summary by region:
Andalucia: Register with the Registro de Turismo de Andalucía. Your property must meet safety and quality standards.
Balearic Islands: Highly regulated. Some areas have license caps or moratoriums.
Catalonia: Requires a HUT (Habitatge d’Ús Turístic) license and
compliance with technical standards.
Madrid: Registration and adherence to safety and accessibility rules are mandatory.
Murcia: Registration with the regional tourism registry and a declaración responsable is needed.
Comunidad Valenciana: Apply for a certificado de compatibilidad urbanística from your town hall before registering.
New Requirements in 2025
From 1 July 2025: A new national property registry code from the Colegio de Registradores will be required. This unique identifier must be used in online listings and ensures compliance and traceability.
From 3 April 2025: Communities of owners (comunidades de propietarios) can legally limit or ban holiday rentals. You’ll need written approval from the community to apply for or renew a rental license - particularly important for apartment buildings.
Rental income must be declared in Spain, even for non-residents. You may also face local taxes (e.g., tourist and garbage fees). Legal duties include guest registration, invoicing, and adhering to noise and occupancy rules.

You know how it is, you move to Spain and move into a wonderful villa on a beautiful urbanisation. It has its own pool, lovely gardens and lots of bedrooms for guests to visit. You have time to relax, enjoy the slowness of Spanish life and pass the time of day visiting your friends. It’s truly wonderful. However, as we get on in years we start to encounter some realities. The villa starts to become too big, taking up more time to keep on top of. Those quick maintenance jobs start to become difficult. You start to feel a bit more isolated and those visitors, well, they don’t come as often. Before you know it, your dream villa is becoming a harsh reality. The thing is, you love living here but start worrying about your health and being lonely. It’s time for your 2nd retirement, one where you can live a far less stressful life, make new friends, yet stay in the country that’s become your home.
This is exactly the scenario we see time and time again at Ciudad Patricia. The concept of independent senior living addresses all these concerns and more. Ciudad Patricia is a dedicated retirement resort set in 100,000 square metres of beautifully well-kept gardens with purpose build, decent sized retirement apartments. You’ll never be lonely in a community of like minded people. Your apartment is taken care of for you as are the 4 pools and lush gardens. The central building is the community hub for gatherings, a library, restaurant and cinema. The care team are there to help with day to day needs and there’s even a Doctor on site.
The journey to Ciudad Patricia can take time, but it's never too early to take the first step and plan today for tomorrow’s peace of mind. Interested? Contact Alison on 673 064 288 or email a.eaves@ciudadpatricia.com and take the first step towards a fulfilling 2nd retirement.

Osteoporosis is a "silent disease" that causes bones to weaken, becoming more susceptible to fractures even from minimal impact. It occurs gradually over many years without your knowledge. So, the only way to know how strong your bones are is to have a scan known as a bone densitometry scan as until about the age of 30, we produce bone faster than we lose it, but around the age of 40 it tends to plateau. After this time, the reverse is true and bone mass declines and for women this bone loss is particularly accelerated during the menopause.
The Achilles bone density test is a non-invasive test that offers a quick and affordable way for an initial osteoporosis assessment and the risk of bone fractures. The exam is quick and comfortable and is performed with the patient seated with one foot placed on the Footplate. The machine uses high frequency sound waves to evaluate the os calcis (bone status in the heel), The patient will receive the results immediately from the specialist performing the test.
Remember it is never too early to start looking after your bones so book your Achilles Bone density test here at Clinica Britannia as soon as possible.

Every year in July a medieval market is set up in the village centre of La Nucía to commemorate that on the 9th of July 1705 the town charter was signed. This market has been held since 2005 and this year includes a medieval camp, fencing, belly dancing, medieval characters, troubadours, fire shows, workshops for children and craft demonstrations.
More than forty authentic artisans have reserved a space to sell what they have made with their own hands. The Plaza Mayor and the streets surrounding the Town Hall will be filled with stalls with a wide variety of authentic crafts: ceramics and pottery, glass, designer and costume jewellery, carved wood and marquetry, handmade soaps and perfumes, wooden toys, lamps made with pine cones or pumpkins, and much more.
The blacksmith will be working at his forge and will offer you the chance to make a knife, while the potter will let you make your own bowl on his wheel. There will be other workshops at the medieval encampment, which will be set up again in San José Square, where there is ample space for archery and fencing, as well as medieval combat demonstrations.
In the gastronomic corner you will find food stalls: cheeses and sausages, nuts, jams and sweets, as well as a medieval tavern, a pulpería serving plates of octopus, and a jaima with Arab food. And while parents recover their strength there, children can participate in craft workshops, play board games or have a ride on the mythological carousel.
To complete the medieval atmosphere, troubadours, knights, a belly dancer, buffoons, beggars and other medieval characters will tour the streets and corners of the market and close the market every night with a great fire show.
The Market is set up in the oldest part of the village, around the Town Hall, and opens to the public on Friday the 11th, Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of July from 6pm to midnight (or later...). There is ample parking (free) in the Auditorio de les Nits car park, 100 metres from the market and in a large open-air car park, just behind the old town. The complete market programme can be found at https://www.puebloartesano.es/lanucia.

I have recently been advised by a friend that a potential client would be contacting me, great. But they want natural grass……. Ok, why do they want natural grass?
Because they think it’s more comfortable than artificial grass……. Trust me, anyone who has ever walked on natural grass in Spain knows it's not comfy. Don’t get me wrong, if the lawn is exceptionally well maintained and watered it may be better than most, but it will never be as comfy as artificial grass. I would say 95% of lawns I have ever stood on in Spain fall into the, not well maintained category, and consequently that means they are not comfortable. I have had numerous experiences with previous clients and new clients who are either making the move to artificial grass or were very happy with their artificial grass because of how comfy it was. Spaces that were never used by families until we installed artificial grass, play areas for kids that were never used until we installed artificial grass and clients who now want it, as their perceptions of the product were changed after a friend of theirs had it installed, because it was so comfortable. It's pretty obvious really, as artificial grass has been designed to be comfy. It's one of the main things it must be to satisfy customers, along with, good memory, not fading etc. All of these are basic requirements that a good product should live up to. So if you want to have comfortable, chemical free, green all year-round grass. Give us at Artificial Grass Spain a call, make the right choice for your feet and your wallet.

Foot reflexology is a special type of massage in which specific zones on the feet are stimulated. According to reflexology theory, these zones are directly connected to different organs and areas of the body. By targeting the feet, the entire body can be positively influenced.
The method has its roots in ancient healing traditions, including those of China and Egypt. Today, it is widely used in natural medicine and is often applied to promote relaxation and support the body's self-healing abilities. During the massage, the reflex zones are treated with pressure, circular movements, or gentle stroking using the fingers. Depending on the area, the treatment may feel relaxing or slightly uncomfortable - especially if there is an imbalance in the corresponding part of the body. Many people report deep relaxation, improved sleep, relief from headaches, or an overall sense of well-being after a session.
A typical session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. The person receiving the massage lies comfortably while the therapist works on the soles of the feet. Regular treatments can help reduce stress, strengthen the immune system, and release tension.
It is important to note that foot reflexology does not replace medical treatment, but it can be a valuable complementary approach. It is suitable for people of all ages but should be used with caution or under medical advice in certain cases - such as acute inflammations, thrombosis, or during pregnancy.

The Entertainers have had a busy pre-season learning new songs and practising their act, so with four or five new songs each and twenty-five new routines for the Dollies the band was more than ready to entertain us with their songs and dance when they started the summer picnic season at Los Arcos.
Regrettably the weather had not read the script, so on Friday 23rd May torrential rain forced the Denia U3A Hog Roast to be moved inside the Los Arcos Restaurant, Pedreguer. Cazzie Millington, U3A Vice President & Event Organiser, welcomed the members of the Asprosdeco day centre in Denia, whose wonderful work was being sponsored by the event, together with other Cruz Roja Española initiatives. As the wonderful hog roast was served she invited The Entertainers onto the stage. From the very first moment they hit us with new song after new song and a super Motown Medley to bring the show to a close. Two weeks later the Entertainers were back, and this time in the garden on Wednesday 11th June for 125 guests at MABS Javea’s fund-raising picnic. MABS Cancer Support Group have Support Centres and shops throughout the region in Javea, Alfaz del Pi and Mazarron. The Entertainers performed a wide variety of songs with different singers offering something for everyone. To cap off this wonderful evening MABS Javea confirmed that €1,800 had been raised to add to their funds for their Cancer Support teams.
WOW – picnic season is really here and I can’t wait for more occasions to party!!!

Cancer Care Jávea is calling on local residents to consider giving a little of their time to support a cause that truly makes a difference. The charity’s shops in Jávea play a vital role in raising funds to support people affected by cancer across the Marina Alta - but they can’t do it without volunteers. With summer approaching and regular helpers taking holidays, extra hands are needed to keep the shops running smoothly. Whether it’s greeting customers, sorting donations, pricing items, or creating eye-catching displays, there’s a role for everyone - no retail experience necessary.
Volunteering is more than just helping out. It’s a chance to be part of a warm, welcoming team, meet new people, learn new skills, and add a sense of purpose to your week. Many volunteers say they gain far more than they give.
By donating a few hours of your time, you’ll be directly supporting cancer patients and their families - making real change possible in your community.
Whether you can offer a regular slot or just want to try it out, Cancer Care Jávea would love to hear from you. They’re happy to arrange an informal chat, with no pressure or obligation. Interested? Contact cancercarejavea@outlook.com to find out more or to arrange a time to drop in and meet the team.

'I'd never heard of the European Union of Women until now. I've never been part of a group that is so together as a team, supporting each other in the work that we do to raise issues which affect women. The European Union of Women here in the Marina Alta networks across municipal boundaries, women's organisations and charities which help women. Every meeting they hold is different, opening up possibilities to help women live a healthy happy life here, whatever their nationality. I am so pleased to be a member!'
This was a message sent to Margaret Hales as President of EUW Marina Alta. The organisation is a registered NGO, one of the fastest growing women's groups in the Marina Alta. As part of a Europe-wide network committed to democratic representation and peace, EUWMA is accredited by various bodies including the United Nations. President Margaret, encourages local involvement, stating: “We are a group which raises issues about women in our part of Spain. Through cooperation and friendship, we are helping to create a network of women who care for each other. We care that we still struggle for parity in the job market, and we care that 50 women's lives are needlessly lost through gender violence. Together we can make our voices heard above the chatter of other issues. Together we can make progress. Join us in this journey.”
Would you like to become a member of the EUWMA to support our work in the Marina Alta? Membership is just €15 per year. Please transfer your €15 to IBAN: ES76 2100 4575 5902 0015 0653 and email euwma.treasurer@gmail.com to let her know you have done so.

Many people say, “But I hate walking!” - often brushing it off as boring, slow, or pointless. But what if the very thing you resist is the key to better health, clearer thinking, and a brighter mood?
Let’s be honest - saying you hate something as simple and natural as walking might be a sign that negativity is creeping in. And here’s the kicker: walking might be the perfect way to fix that.
Walking is not just movement; it’s medicine. It lowers blood pressure, improves heart health, boosts immunity, and helps manage weight. It’s low-impact, free, and always available. More importantly, it’s a proven mood-lifter. Walking helps reduce anxiety, clears your head, and can shift your perspective in surprising ways.
If you're stuck in a rut or feeling down, walking - especially with support - can help shift your mindset. That’s where the Walk Your Way Well community comes in. It’s a welcoming group that helps you stay motivated and connected. Want to join? Just send a message via WhatsApp to be added to the group.
Or if you need a more personal boost, consider a one-to-one “walk and talk” coaching session with Niamh. It’s a calm, supportive way to explore whatever’s on your mind - while gently getting you moving again.
To find out more, contact Niamh directly and take the first step - literally - towards walking your way well. +34 676 507 791.

It was standing room only when The International Choir presented a concert at the little white church in Moraira as part of the Moors & Christians 2025 Festival.
The varied programme included a selection of songs from the choir’s recent concert of Broadway musical numbers and last year’s Eurovision-themed concert.
There was also an emotional tribute marking the recent passing of the choir’s president Andy Keen, with Mozart’s ‘Ave Verum Corpus’, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ and a solo by Musical Director John Edwards singing ‘Ave Maria’.
The audience also enjoyed a solo by Donna Lawson of K.D. Lang’s ‘Constant Craving’, accompanied by Bev Bayles and Imogen Burley and the bonus encore of the James Bond number ‘Goldfinger’.
The retiring collection raised €400 for the choir’s chosen charities, which this year include The Alzheimer's Day Care Centre in Teulada and Project 4 All.

On Saturday, May 24th Montgó Chorale gave their May concert at what has become a regular venue, Iglesia de Nuestra Virgen de Loreto (also known as the Fisherman's Church) in Jávea. Conducted by the choir's Musical Director Aileen Lightfoot and accompanied by Kirsty Glen, the uplifting performance, enhanced by the church's wonderful acoustics, was enthusiastically received by the audience who showed their appreciation with very generous contributions to the retiring collection. This was in aid of Caritas, the church’s charity that does such important and worthwhile work supporting local families in need.
The wide-ranging programme included compositions by Mozart and John Rutter, an arrangement for choir of the slow movement from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Leonard Cohen's wellknown and much loved Hallelujah, and selection of traditional folk songs Aileen Lightfoot and Kirsty Glen also performed “Ashokan Farewell” by Jay Ungar, a piece for violin with piano. Details of further concerts involving Montgo Chorale will be publicised in due course.
