FAMUN 2016 Opening Ceremony THE UN ROLE TO THE PROMOTION OF CHANGES WAS HIGHLIGHTED By Lucas Valença

On 2 September 2016, the opening ceremony of FAMUN 2016 took place at the FCM Auditorium, with the presence of the Secretariat, the faculty advisors, the coordinators of FACAMP’s International Relations course and the honourable guest, Professor Luiz Gonzaga Belluzzo. Professor Alessandro Ortuso, coordinator of the International Relations course at FACAMP, highlighted the need of world leaders to actually change the future especially through the UN, which requires an effort to reformulate the role of this organization to face the current challenges. The Secretary-General, Renato Peixeiro, in a moving speech, thanked the organization team and the delegates and highlighted the role that FAMUN has in shaping values that will forge the future we want. Professor Belluzzo composed the academic dais of the ceremony and talked about the importance of solidarity and the need to protect human rights in time of so many humanitarian crises. The promotion of equal rights while still acknowledging differences was the main point of his careful speech, which was closely listened by the audience. By the end, the professor conceded an interview to the Movement journal, when he praised the initiative of FAMUN, which raises the level of discussions – something

that is not common nowadays. Professor Belluzzo also commented about the consolidation of the event, that reaches its 4th edition, and highlighted the projection of FAMUN throughout Brazil and abroad.

With the participation of Mr. Griffiths – UN Specialist Panel on monitoring sanctions on North Korea delegates focused on the humanitarian impacts of economic and financial sanctions. In the formal debate, delegates tried to establish a common ground for consensus, but there were different views. New Zealand exhibited interest in greater multilateral involvement. Russia asked for a review of the instruments used by the Council, while the US stressed the need of evaluating the impact of sanctions.

South-South cooperation with Chávez piensa en unidad new financial possibilities nacional BRICS DISCUSS THE ECONOMIC CRISIS CÓMO LIDIAR CON LA OPOSICIÓN Y LA AND INVESTMENTS IN INFRASTRUCTURE COMUNICACIÓN CON EL PUEBLO

GabChávez Por Isabela Mendes

BFF By Ana Laura Freire The interactive dialogue counted with the presence of Mr. Maasdorp, Vice-president and Chief of Financial Officer of the New Development Bank. In his speech, he stressed the need of “producing more with less” as the essential strategy behind the BFF. Food security and social stability were the main topics involving India’s initial speech. Investments in electricity, which are coordinated by Russia, were the main issue when it comes to Indian perspective at the BRICS. Brazil proposed an agenda based on financial help while overcoming economic crises should be the first step to consolidate a true financial cooperation. The Russian representative talked about agricultural improvement as the main concern. South Africa and China supported the position of the other members. As the formal-informal debate began, the members discussed their agenda. Credit line was the first topic released. The President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) stated that it requires a “long and hard work” when it comes to providing financial support to infrastructure. He also said the committee should not overlook logistical matters.

ALOHAMUN welcomes the college delegates

THE FIRST DAY IMPRESSIONS WERE SHARED BETWEEN DELEGATES AND DIRECTORS By Isabela Mendes - Translated by Lucas Valença

The first party of FAMUN 2016 was a great welcoming to all delegates by the directors. ALOHAMUN was a luau themed party, with a fire and lots of different food. It was also a great moment to the participants to talk about the new rules of procedure and their expectations for the next days of simulation. Directors agreed about the utility of the workshop, a new feature in this edition, which had a good response from the delegates. Rodrigo Cassel, from UFRGS, is simulating in the BFF as the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. This is his first FAMUN, and, during the party, he expressed his satisfaction about the clarifications provided in the workshop. Rodrigo also had a good time at ALOHAMUN, since he could get to know his directors.
