Brazil is an active participant and an acknowledged leader at the UN. As one of its founding members, in 1945, Brazil contributed to the construction of the UN headquarters in New York by the world famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. He was part of a renowned group of architects responsible for designing the headquarters in New York. In the UNGA, since 1947, Brazil has traditionally delivered the opening speech of the meeting. There are a few theories as to why this honor was given to the country: some say it was because Brazil was a neutral country in the beginning of the Cold War; others believe it was some kind of compensation for Brazil, since it did not receive a permanent seat at the UNSC. Still, Brazil is one the countries that most participated at the Council as a non-permanent member. The UN usually receives gifts and artwork from Member States as a way to honor the works of the organization. Among these gifts, there is one from Brazil, the artwork
War and Peace by the renowned Brazilian artist Candido Portinari. The artist, who got sick due to lead contamination, could not paint with this substance. However, when he was invited to do the artwork, he decided to do so regardless of the consequences. The artwork illustrates the helplessness and sorrow in times of war, but also shows the happiness and celebration in times of peace. Despite Portinari’s great contribution, he never visited his artwork in the UN headquarters in New York. Currently, one of the most important Brazilian contributions to the UN is the military command of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). It was established by the decision of the Security Council in February 2004, in order to restructure Haiti’s national security. After the earthquake in 2010, which killed more than 300 thousand people and left more than 3 million homeless, Brazil has provided humanitarian aid to the country, as well as assisted the reconstruction of areas affected by the earthquake.

The BRICS nations signed a multilateral project with the financial support of their multilateral banks, which finally showed their true ascending role in the international arena. An investment accorded to finance development in Africa was consolidated. The World Bank and the New Development Bank are going to finance an assignment in the amount of 30 million dollars to the Republic of Kenya for Nairobi Water Supply Project. The representatives also plan to expand an already existing project of the World Bank, but now with the financial support of the NDB.

In the sixth session, breaking news revealed that DPRK fired three ballistic missiles on the east coast of South Korea. The missiles were fired from Pyongyang and hit the Japanese air defense. The news was enough to raise more suspicions on the position of North Korea. There was strong position of the Uruguayan representative. He said that the Council for sure could not trust the DPRK. For Russia, the episode required a multilateral approach and the focus should be on best practices. Russia, UK and India asked to establish a true dialogue with DPRK, in order to control the escalation of the conflict. In the seventh session, the discussions provided the development of the points that the Council will address in the final document, which are humanitarian issues; the selling of minerals; and North Korea’s commitment to abide to the sanctions decided by the Council. In the eighth session, the main concern of delegates was on how to make DPRK respect what was decided on the new resolution. Afterwards, they found a middle ground and scheduled an initial version of the resolution. Now the document will be approved by vote in the ninth session, and it is expected that consensus will be achieved.
A CIJ contou com o testemunho de Juan Fernandez, cônsul paraguaio nos Estados Unidos, que foi interrogado pelas partes e por alguns juízes. O cônsul afirmou que não aceita notificações verbais, somente escritas, e que não recebeu nenhuma carta oficial dos EUA. Contudo, em suas respostas, confundiu-se em relação à data da carta da família do acusado e também quanto ao nome deste. Para os representantes dos EUA, os equívocos da testemunha poderiam representar uma má ingerência e desorganização do consulado, o que poderia ter acarretado em perda da notificação. Os juízes Rezek, Weeramantry e Parra-Aranguren demonstraram, em seus discursos, preocupação com o comprometimento dos EUA acerca da medida provisória deferida. Os juízes então receberam a informação de que Sr. Breard havia sido executado pelo estado da Virgínia, desrespeitando a decisão da CIJ e confirmando a desconfiança anterior. O fato foi lamentado pelos juízes Rezek e Weeramantry e pelos representantes do Paraguai. O episódio foi alvo de uma manifestação da Anistia Internacional, que protestou contra o desrespeito norte-americano.

The costumes and shows of FAMUN Horror THE THRILLER WAS THE FUN OF DELEGATES By Rúbia Marcussi
FAMUN Horror Story party reunited delegates and directors for one more moment of happiness at Empório Sabores Mendocinos, in Barão Geraldo. Creativity was the main characteristic of the costumes: we were able to see everybody in their best horror style costumes, such as vampires and comic book villains. Kamila Vital, from GabChávez, was a famous comic book villain: the Harley Quinn. Her boyfriend, Talysson Oliveira, was dressed as The Joker, Harley’s love interest. They enjoyed the horror atmosphere of the party and praised the pizza and the good music! One of the finest moments of the party was the Talent Show. The directors of FAMUN 2016 presented a special mash-up of classic and new songs with a beautiful choreography, which was received with lots of applauses. After that, the delegation of UFRGS also presented an enthusiastic choreography that made everyone dance with them!

The delegates and directors also discussed about the upcoming day of simulation and the last session. They were excited to conclude the debates in the committees, but also a little bit sad since it will be the last day of FAMUN. But do not worry: we still have our Game of Models today!
