THE PRESS TEAM PREPARES ITSELF TO COVER THE SESSIONS AND THE SOCIAL EVENTS By Enrico Queirazza
Under the coordination of its directors – Andréia Andrade, Lucas Valença e Marina Pongitor – and composed by reporters, designers, photographers and public relations, the Press Team has a pivot role in collecting and divulging information about the discussions and the social events of FAMUN 2016. In this edition, the update of social media will have the role of stimulating the debate. The press director responsible for the social media, Marina Pongitor, pointed out that “the social media is a way to keep everyone updated about what happens in all the sessions, facilitating the interaction and the learning process of all FAMUN’s participants”. The Press will also have a political role, by reproducing the influence the media has over the positioning of delegates along the sessions. The reporters responsible for covering the committees’ sessions will have a task similar to the
one exercised by the international media, by reporting the progress of the discussions, not to mention the leakage of strategic information. It is expected that these actions will affect the work of the delegates in the simulation as they do affect the work of diplomats in the real life.

Thematic Workshop: a new feature of FAMUN 2016 THE THEMATIC WORKSHOP AIMS TO DEEPEN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DELEGATES IN THE SIMULATED THEMES By Isabela Mendes
Conscious that many are the challenges to organize a Model UN, the UN Department of Public Information has developed, since 2009, workshops to capacitate MUNs organizers all over the world. The initiative aims at creating an environment in simulations that is closer to the real decision making process at the UN. One of the features is the thematic workshop, which was implemented in FAMUN this year, having the UN4MUN Approach as an inspiration. After the traditional revision of the rules, delegates benefited from the thematic workshops, conducted by the Presidents of each committee, who presented the main themes explored in their study guides. The workshops provided a moment for collective study and reflection about the challenges that the committees will face in the upcoming days of discussion. At the end of the activities, the committee’s main objectives that will direct the debate were discussed, emphasizing the importance of reaching consensus.
Gabriela Fontanari, President of the BRICS Financial Forum, saw the workshop as the first moment for coordination among delegates, since the discussions highlighted the need for consensus and coherence in the decisions that will be taken by BRICS countries. The thematic workshops were, therefore, essential to level the playfield among delegates regarding their knowledge of the main problems to be addressed by each committee. It means that, now, delegates have a common departure point, making consensus a more real possibility.

GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE COMMITTEE’S THEMES AND TOPICS BFF By Ana Laura Freire The BFF aims to foster financial cooperation as a way to minimize operational risks and give support to the development of partner countries. After all, cooperation among BRICS countries offers a completely new perspective in financing their agrarian sectors, which is a strategic one for the group. Having different principles from financial institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank, the representatives at the BFF must decide on ways to finance the objectives set in the BRICS Action Plan 2012-2016 for Agricultural Cooperation, which are food security, climate change, agriculture technology cooperation and innovation and trade and investment. An approval by consensus must be reached since gains for all BRICS countries are essential for the effective agrarian development. Furthermore, the cooperation has the purpose to achieve more influence and prestige for BRICS in the international arena.

El Presidente y sus ministros están reunidos desde el 12 de marzo de 2002 con el objetivo de tomar decisiones asertivas para hacer frente a la división política en Venezuela; la crisis económica y social; y la cuestión de la comunicación del gobierno. Por lo tanto, Venezuela vive un momento crucial para el avance del proyecto bolivariano concebido por Presidente Chávez.
CIJ Por Leticia Martins A CIJ colocará em discussão o caso do Paraguai vs. Estados Unidos (EUA) à luz de uma possível violação dos artigos da Convenção de Viena sobre Relações Consulares por parte dos EUA. Isso teria acontecido porque os EUA prenderam, processaram e declararam como culpado por homicídio doloso o paraguaio Angel Francisco Breard, residente no território norte-americano. Entretanto, a reclusão e julgamento de Breard ocorreram sem a notificação obrigatória ao Paraguai, conforme postula tal Convenção. Ademais, o nacional paraguaio detido foi condenado à sentença de morte, o que ilustra a gravidade da situação jurídica e diplomática entre os dois Estados envolvidos. Assim, o Paraguai recorreu à CIJ para que esta julgasse o caso e verificasse a possível violação dos EUA quanto às suas obrigações com a Convenção e com o Paraguai. O julgamento da CIJ começa no dia 07 de abril de 1998, e o cidadão paraguaio tem sua sentença de morte agendada para 14 de abril do mesmo ano, o que exige rapidez nas decisões a serem tomadas.
UNSC By Bruna Cacace The UNSC, based on its prerogative to elaborate sanctions, will discuss their role in the international system nowadays. There are many challenges facing the general use of sanctions especially related to their level of efficiency. Considering this, the representatives will discuss how to improve the design of sanctions. More specifically, the Council will approach the case of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea regarding the sanctions against the country, in order to prevent the development of its nuclear program. However, despite the sanctions, Pyongyang is clearly challenging UNSC resolutions on the matter. Therefore, the discussions and expectations lie upon a debate regarding humanitarian, economic, social and political impacts of sanctions and ways for the UNSC to promote compliance of the Non Proliferation Treaty by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
FAMUN’s social media on its 4th edition GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE MEDIA COVERAGE AND ITS BIG NEWS By Letícia Dias
The influence social media has in everyday life has also brought great changes to contemporary international relations. These tools are considered the “fourth power”, due to their capacity of influencing the behavior of global decision-makers and altering the course of international events. In movements such as the Arab Spring, for example, social media had a crucial role as a platform for the dissemination of ideas and the quick engagement of international public opinion. In addition, the use of social media by decision-makers themselves are becoming more popular every day. The current President of the United States, Barack Obama, has been extremely active on his Twitter account since his first administration. The US President uses this social media not only to advertise its political projects, but also to reach out to his electorate and even to share moments of his private life. Besides the use of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, a new social media will be introduced during the coverage of FAMUN 2016: Snapchat. This tool can assist the delegates in the negotiations during sessions as a mechanism to gain legitimacy in a proposition and even as a way to leak strategic information. It is expected that the influence of social media in international relations is simulated at FAMUN, and that delegates can make use of them as tools to help the decision-making process, exercising media pressure or even express their positions and views in a striking manner.
