The growth of the fleet has not only reinforced our daily operations, it has also enabled us to strengthen the strategic role we play in the hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, where, thanks to the gradual recovery of the offer, frequencies and routes, we have once again realised the airline’s importance in the air corridor between Europe and America. ENG Like every year, on 14 August the music and colour of the Caribbean will fill the streets of New York to celebrate the Dominican Day Parade, a parade that for the past 40 years has been commemorating the battle with which the Dominion Republic achieved independence from Spain. The lively parade is made up of dozens of floats and hundreds of artists wearing masks and dressed in costumes with feathers, accompanied by characters from Dominican culture such as Diablo Cojuelo (Lame Devil) and Roba la Gallina (Steal the Chicken). The parade gets underway at 12 noon and travels along Sixth Avenue, starting at 35th Street and ending at 56th Street.

Con apenas 50.000 habitantes, el municipio holandés de Weert, casi en la frontera con Bélgica, acaba de inaugurar uno de los museos más sorprendentes del mundo. El nuevo Museum W, que encierra más de 17.000 obras de arte religioso e historia regional, se ha convertido en una mágica caja dorada que también sirve de marco expositivo exterior. “Concebimos una de las fachadas como si fuera un relicario revestido de oro en el que se guardan las reliquias del santo”, explica el diseñador Maurice Mentjens, encargado del proyecto que se levantó sobre el edificio del viejo ayuntamiento de la ciudad, de 1982. Comienzas el libro explicando la decisión que cambió tu vida. ¿Qué supuso el viaje en ese momento? Un crecimiento personal, porque al viajar experimenté la libertad de reinventarme.
¿Qué has aprendido recorriendo el mundo?
A no juzgar, a dejar que las cosas fluyan, a dar más importancia a lo vivido en cada momento, a manejarme con pocos recursos y a disfrutar de la soledad. ¿Vives para viajar o viajas para vivir?
No, no vivo para viajar. Viajar me hace sentir viva, es una forma más de disfrutar, nunca una obsesión.
¿Cómo y cuánto tiempo planeas un viaje?
La improvisación es una característica de mis viajes. Pero lo primordial siempre lo planifico. Gran parte de tus viajes han sido en solitario. ¿Te molesta la compañía en un viaje? No me molesta, pero a veces supone una carga… No es fácil encontrar a alguien con quien realizar un viaje con un presupuesto ajustado.
De todos los lugares que has visitado, cuál es el que más te ha emocionado y por qué.
Irán me sorprendió por la admirable hospitalidad de su gente. Pero hay tantos lugares, tan impactantes… ¿Sabes ya cuál será tu próximo destino?
Hay varios en mente. Pero no importa dónde. Cualquier lugar es un maravilloso destino.

En Menorca no hay sitio para falsos esnobismos. Aquí nada resulta impostado: la autenticidad imprime carácter a una isla donde, a un ritmo sosegado y en un entorno natural protegido, el arte más actual campa a sus anchas. Nothing is imposed here: an island whose character is marked by authenticity, which moves at a leisurely pace in a protected natural environment, where the most contemporary art has a free rein. Maybe that’s why it has been chosen as the best art destination of the year.
Cada domingo, desde 2004, un grupo de incansables voluntarios arribaba a la Isla del Rey para desbrozar la vegetación que iba devorando el pequeño islote en medio del puerto de Mahón. Fue un lugar importante tres siglos atrás, cuando los británicos que ocuparon Menorca construyeron allí un hospital; sin embargo, en 1964, el edificio dejó de usarse y la isla cayó en el olvido. Hasta que, en julio de 2021, aquellos voluntarios (convertidos en la Fundación Hospital de la Isla del Rey) asistieron orgullosos a la primera exposición organizada por el centro de arte Hauser & Wirth, que se alió con ellos para transformar aquellas ruinas en un espacio de creación contemporánea que ha merecido el Premio Europeo de Patrimonio de la Comisión Europea y Europa Nostra.

El proyecto de Hauser & Wirth, de los arquitectos Luis Laplace y Miguel Sintes, se ha erigido en poderoso dinamizador de Menorca y su capital, Mahón. De hecho, la revista Wallpaper, en sus Design Awards, ha reconocido la isla balear como mejor destino de arte mundial 2022. “Iwan y Manuela Wirth [sus propietarios] visitaron en 2016 la Isla del Rey y quedaron fascinados por el proyecto comunitario de restauración y por la idea de dar una segunda vida a las dependencias del siglo XVIII”, explica Mar Rescalvo, directora de Hauser & Wirth. Aquí, esculturas en plena naturaleza de Camille Henrot, Martin Creed o Eduardo Chillida y muestras temporales (como la de Rashid Johnson, que ahora se puede visitar) conviven con actividades que involucran a artistas de Menorca. Elvira González se instaló en Menorca sin imaginar que abriría en Mahón una galería de arte contemporáneo, Encant, que ya ha cumplido 21 años. “Esta tierra con una huella talayótica excepcional, centro de tantas civilizaciones e invasiones que trajo el mar, está conformada para que germinen los proyectos artísticos”, asegura. “Menorca cumple una función casi terapéutica: paisaje natural, ritmo lento, sencillez y belleza”. Hubo un tiempo, allá por los 80, en que creadores de diversas disciplinas y procedencias hallaron en Menorca la paz que necesitaban para desarrollar su talento. Es el caso de Laetitia Lara, entonces estudiante parisina de arquitectura que, en una escapada a la isla, conectó con ella en el alma: “Me enamoré de sus piedras y canteras; volví para estudiarlas y un encargo para la catedral de Ciutadella me hizo quedarme”. En 1994, creó Lithica, organización que protege las canteras de s´Hostal de los escombros: “Se trata de landart espontáneo, abierto por las manos de los canteros. Lithica despierta espacios sepultados, dando una visión contemporánea de un lugar arcaico y dotándole de vida con actividades medioambientales, didácticas, escénicas. Así las canteras se vuelven jardín, museo al aire libre, taller, teatro…”. Visitarlas es entender el origen y el futuro creativo de esta isla.
Every Sunday since 2004, a group of untiring volunteers have arrived on the Illa del Rei to clear the vegetation that was devouring the little islet in the middle of the Port of Maó. It was an important place three centuries ago, when the British who occupied Menorca built a hospital there. However, in 1964, the building fell into disuse and the island was forgotten about, until July 2021, when the volunteers (converted into the Fundación Hospital de la Illa del Rei) proudly attended the first exhibition organised by the Hauser & Wirth art centre, which formed an alliance with them to transform the ruins into a place for contemporary creation that has won a European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award.
The project by Hauser & Wirth, created by architects Luis Laplace and Miguel Sintes, has become a powerful driving force for Menorca and its capital, Maó. Furthermore, both local residents and foreigners often catch the boat that goes to the islet, not only to find out about the programme, but to try the Mediterranean cuisine served in its restaurant, Cantina, enjoy a concert or discover the craftwork by local creators, such as Pere Vinent, Carmen Cocoon and Bona Soca. ‘We want to be a Trojan Horse for art: you can visit an exhibition, take a stroll through nature, join in educational events or have a drink’, she concludes.
Elvira González settled on Menorca without imagining that she would open in Maó a contemporary art gallery, Encant, which is 21 years old. ‘This land with an exceptional Talayotic footprint, the centre of so many civilisations and invasions brought by the sea, is the ideal place to make artistic projects flourish’, she assures. ‘Menorca performs a function that verges on therapeutic: natural landscape, slow pace, simplicity and beauty’. This creative rebirth reaches other businesses that assume art as their own. Like the boutique hotel, Can Albertí 1740: a Maó-style mansion where numerous artists and writers once stayed, which now includes exhibitions inside the building (in collaboration with galleries such as Encant and Polka), besides shaking up the city’s cultural life by organising classical music concerts at the Teatro Principal. There was once a time, in the 1980s, when creators of diverse disciplines from different places found in Menorca the peace they needed to be able to develop their talent. This is the case of Laetitia Lara, at that time a Parisienne student of Architecture, who came to the island on a short break and connected with it with her soul, ‘I fell in love with

its stones and quarries; I later returned to study them and a job for Menorca Cathedral made me stay’. In 1994, she created Lithica, an organisation that protects the quarries in s´Hostal from debris. ‘It is spontaneous land-art, opened by the quarriers’ hands. Lithica awakens buried spaces, giving a contemporary view of an archaic place and filling it with life, with environmental, educational and scenic activities. Thus the quarries become a garden, an open-air museum, a workshop, a theatre, etc.’. Visiting them is understanding the island’s creative origin and its future.

Trabajo con gres, me encanta utilizar el color blanco y no esmalto las piezas más que por un lado porque me gusta que se vea la tierra de verdad”. Esta popular celebración, de origen medieval y de Interés Turístico Internacional, llena de colorido Guadix (Granada). This popular medieval festival fills the town of Guadix in Granada with colour, and is considered to be of International Tourist Interest.

Se trata de una fiesta muy popular, lúdica y dinámica, llena de colorido y con gran participación de la población joven.
La fiesta se remonta al siglo XV. Cuenta la leyenda que después de la Reconquista, un obrero de Guadix, llamado Juan Pedernal, descubrió en Baza una talla escondida desde el siglo XII de la virgen e intentó llevársela a Guadix, no permitiéndolo las autoridades locales.
Se llegó al acuerdo de que si un comisionado de Guadix, el Cascamorras, lograba entrar en Baza y llegar a la iglesia de la Merced sin ninguna mancha en su traje, podría recuperar la virgen para su pueblo. Los bastetanos no permitieron que la imagen de su patrona saliera de la ciudad. Tras forcejear y manchar de pintura al Cascamorras, este vuelve a Guadix sin la virgen y le reciben con más pinturas, mezcla de agua, almagra y azulete. Esta tradición se repite cada año.
Desde los balcones se lanzan cubos de agua al grito de los que realizan la carrera: ¡agua! ¡agua! El recorrido culmina en la iglesia de San Miguel, cuando el Cascamorras se despide ondeando la bandera.
Much-loved, entertaining and extremely lively, this colourful fiesta is popular with younger locals. It dates back to the 15th century, when legend has it that after the Reconquista, Juan Pedernal, a worker from Guadix, discovered a carving of the Virgin that had been hidden in Baza since the 12th century. He tried to take it to Guadix, but the local authorities would not allow him to do so.
An agreement was reached, stating that if the Guadix Commissioner, Cascamorras, was able to enter Baza and reach the Church of La Merced without getting a single mark on his outfit, he would be allowed to reclaim the Virgin for his town. But the people of Baza did not want the image of their patron saint to leave, and after a struggle, they managed to stain Cascamorras with paint. Forced to return to Guadix without the Virgin, he was greeted there with more paint, a mixture of water, red ochre and azulete stain. Buckets of water are thrown from the balconies to shouts of Water, water! The race ends with Cascamorras waving a flag in farewell.
