Annual Report

EUROPEAN YOUTH PARLIAMENT SWITZERLAND 2022

The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is a unique educational programme which brings young people from all over Europe together to discuss current topics in a parliamentary setting. Its mission is to support the development of young people into politically aware and responsible citizens by involving them in European political thinking and promoting intercultural understanding.

The EYP is a non-partisan and independent programme. Its methods are based on nonformal education and peer-to peer learning. Thereby the programme facilitates the learning of crucial social and professional skills, and encourages independent thinking and socio-political initiative.

The EYP is a pan-European organisation which does not limit itself to the current political borders of the European Union. As a network of independent associations, EYP is currently present in 39 European countries, enabling contacts across borders and beyond frontiers. The EYP thus offers a platform for intercultural meetings, fosters mutual understanding and makes a vital contribution towards the uniting of Europe.

ELSA NAUTSCH

I remember signing up for my first session as a delegate solemnly because a friend made me do it and not really knowing if I would even like it. Now, something over ten sessions later and countless hours spent with EYP-related work and so many great friends and great experiences I am glad my friend made me apply.

It has been an intense year. It started of with me being given the opportunity to Head-Organise a regional session in Bern together with my Co-HO Lucy Hoffmann. I don’t think I ever learned as much as I did during these months, from leading a group of young people to being responsible for organising venues, accommodation and food for about 100 people together with that team and getting all the money needed for that together. Although we had some bumps along the way I am extremely proud of what we achieved.

I also was part of the organising team at the NSC Basel 2022. I am still truly amazed by all the people involved in the organising process and what was pulled off by us despite having less time than usual for the session. I met a lot of amazing people that I can’t wait to see what they contribute to EYP CH in the next year.

Apart from my involvement within EYP CH I also went abroad for EYP sessions several times this year. This is an experience I can only recommend so much to every new EYPer out there that haven’t experienced it. It has made me love our organisation even more than before, because I met so many great people, learned a lot about Europe and made some of my favourite memories ever.

But in the end, this year has thought me two important lessons. For one, despite loving this organisation, breaks are sometimes extremely needed and also important. After an intense first half of the year, I decided to take a roughly 5-month break from EYP and it paid off so much. Not only has it given me the opportunity to process all the impressions I have had in the months before.

It also has made me realise that EYP is not only something I like doing in the moment and, so to say, for the thrill of it, but also an organisation that I truly value and want to contribute to.

The second lesson is that there will always be people that want to help you and care about you. Most of my closest friends so far I have met in EYP and they keep adding so much to my life. But I also worked together with so many amazing young individuals in this organisation, that despite doing it voluntarily and not knowing each other all too well, stood up and lent a hand or offered a hug whenever needed.

So thank you to everyone who shared this EYP year with me.

MONROE HARTMANN

So, the year 2022 comes to an end. Looking back to last January, I can’t believe how much has happened. For me, it was a year of learning, change and most of all, growth. At the beginning of the year, Omicron was upon us, but hospitalization rates for Covid-19 were gradually going down and the economy within Switzerland was finally opening up. Then, the world went into shock after Putin announced and executed a “special military operation” against Ukraine. The European Youth Parliament responded strongly in support of Ukraine, once again showing what responsible and active citizenship is about.

Within EYP, more and more sessions started to become physical again. And I, late to the party, had the pleasure of attending my first (two!) digital sessions. I was grateful to be a part of an officials team for the first time when I joined the 4th digital session of EYP Switzerland as an organizer. With that experience, I learned how gratifying and enjoyable the world of the European Youth Parliament between sessions and beyond being a delegate can be . Still, my days as a delegate were not over.

The third digital session of EYP CH, which I attended as a delegate, marked my first session of the year. It was a fascinating experience to be able to attend a digital session for the first time from the perspective of a delegate before attending a session as an organiser.

After that, it became time for me to rally up delegations from my school for the next national selection conference. Whereas in the year prior only two delegates from my school attended the NSC, in 2022 we prepared two full delegations. Fast forward to the 26th NSC in Basel, in other words my first session without covid restrictions, and what a spectacular session it was. There were so many wonderful people there that I can now call my friends. I would like to thank the wonderful organising team for giving us delegates such a memorable session and inspiring so many to continue within EYP.

At the closing ceremony of Basel 2022, a very special session was announced: the In-School Session Locarno 2022. As soon as I heard about it, I knew that I had to apply. Being a chairperson was everything it was promised to be. We were a small, but very mighty officials team and I would again like to thank everyone involved. To the organising team, for putting a roof over our heads and feeding us, to the media team for capturing our memories, and to the rest of the academic team, for supporting me. Not forgetting, the delegates for being open and participating in our little event.

This year had an especially large members weekend, with many informative and entertaining modules on what it means to be an EYPer. Much of the “new generation” of EYP CH was in attendance, and it was my pleasure to find myself becoming a mentor to less experienced participants. And mentoring, I believe, is my future. I remember who I was before EYP, and I know how much I flourished once I joined. I know there are so many more people in need of the atmosphere that we have. My hope is to reach those people, the ones that need what I needed, a community.

REGIONAL & DIGITAL SESSIONS 2022

The Regional Cycle 2022 consisted of 3 sessions, two of them being digital (3rd and 4th Digital Sessions) and one physical session in Bern. The sessions were envisioned by 5 Head Organisers, with the help of their organisers.

EYP Switzerland would like to thank Sara Pavlović (RS), Milica Marković and Katarina Stamenković (RS) and Lucy Hoffman and Elsa Nautsch as well as their teams for their hard work and dedications to their sessions. The events went smoothly with many delegates continuing on within the organisation. We are proud of your achievements!

Insight into Bern 2022

The Regional Session Bern 2022 took place in Switzerland’s scenic capital during a beautiful snowy weekend in early April. Having three digital sessions form the majority of the regional cycle 2022, it was of utmost priority to the two Head Organisers to have this Session be held in a fully physical form. With the appropriate measure taken, this plan came into fruition.

The vision of the session was to encourage its participants, no matter their experience prior to the session, to seek out challenges and new roles within EYP. “To seek discomfort”.

Elsa Nautsch and Lucy Hoffmann created a space where novices, experts and anyone inbetween found together and were able to dive into a world of healthy debate, new experiences and into a setting fostering the development of new skills. The session left nobody unchallenged, allowing every single individual, official and delegate, to grow into their personal goals.

Naomi, Nadia, Antoine, Linus, Mara, Dhvijavanthi, Ivan and Saskia; thank you once again for all your effort and love that went into organizing this session!

BASEL 2022 NATIONAL SELECTION CONFERENCE

Looking back at the past year, finding the proper words to describe just how much has happened seems to be quite hard. 2022 has been eventful, nonetheless. Starting with the NSC Basel 2022 which has brought not few challenges to overcome.

While the time crunch, we were subject to, did greatly restrict our ability to realise many projects and ideas, we can confidently say, that we are extremely proud of what has been achieved throughout the process. And we worked extremely hard to overcome all obstacles that we were faced with!

Especially once the event is about to start, the anticipation of a tight schedule and the stress of the many tasks at hand can get quite overwhelming. However, as soon as you see the big smiles on everyone’s faces; when the Delegates face off in a dance battle, where the winner is whoever can pull off the ultimate moves; When the Organising Team snuggles together into a small nook by a window of the hostel, for a short round of storytelling and banter; when we look at each other during the Opening Ceremony while the guests are speaking and whisper, “It’s finally happening!”; That is when all of the stress and worries go out of the window

and are instead replaced with an indescribable sense of satisfaction; the typical “EYP-Excitement”.

At first glance, one may think that those are some of the most irrelevant things. But to us, they are the proof that not only ours, but every single participant’s effort that went into the creation of the National Selection Conference paid off and made sure that the event was – at least for us – an unforgettable experience.

And we were so fortunate to count on the help of so many amazing individuals, which we would like to thank.

Starting with our wonderful Organising Team – Lily, Nadia, Amélie, Lea, Paula, Elsa, Naomi, Mariana, Antoine, Franziska, Yolanda, Mara, Raya, Stella, Aleksey, Linus, Riccardo, Patricia, Brian, Lucy, Ben. We are extremely thankful for the work they put into the project and are humbled by the bond we have created. The enthusiasm, strength of spirit and resilience they showed along the path always helped motivate us, despite the many challenges we were faced with. And it goes without mention that it is thanks to those traits that we did not only manage to make the event happen, but also exceeded all expectations in making it a memorable experience.

Throughout all of this, we were fortunate to have the support from the Board of EYP Switzerland. Especially the perseverance of our Mia Van Der Merwe and Johannes Hahn and their constant dedication to us, to this entire event and organisation ensured that we could continue organising with as few hindrances as possible. Therefore, we would also like to thank them specially for everything they have done for us.

Overall, we think that we can look back at this year as an eventful one full of amazing experiences shared with our wonderful EYP-peers and even more new friends, and we are more than excited to see where the journey will take us for 2023!

Best regards

REGIONAL SESSIONS 2023

Regional Session Zürich 2023

The regional session Zurich 2023 will take place during the dates of 31st of March to 02nd of April 2023 (with the 31st being CMO day) and is head-organised by Lily Watanabe and Naomi Schwarz. The session will be EYP Switzerland’s first physical session in Zurich since 2020. Zurich is Switzerland’s biggest and most populated city and a central point of the German speaking region.

The session’s theme will be: “Belonging: Finding community within competitive structures”. Zurich being the heart of Switzerland’s higher education and financial centre creates both many opportunities and challenges. Constant pressure to perform causes individuals to feel disconnected which is why building a network of support is crucial. At the same time, Zurich offers immense resources to shape the future in a positive way.

Regional Session Lausanne 2023

The regional session Lausanne 2023 will take place during the dates of 17th–19th of March 2023 (with the 17th being CMO day) and is head-organised by Antoine de Bourbon and Nadia Schnider. The session will be EYP Switzerland’s first venture into the Romandie since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Romandie, being the french speaking region of Switzerland, is home to a quarter of the Swiss population.

The session will follow the theme “Breaking ground in a digitalised world”. In light of new technologies being developed at a record breaking pace and everyday life becoming increasingly digitalised, there is an urgent need for European policy to reflect this change. The RS Lausanne 2023 will welcome young people to develop, share and debate their vision for a modern day Europe.

The Regional Cycle 2023 will consist of two physical sessions, one in Lausanne and one in Zürich in Spring 2023.

The Regional Sessions 2023 offer young people from all over Europethe opportunity to share ideas and develop skills while finding belonging in a welcoming community in order to envision a sustainable future for Europe.

TICINO 2023 NATIONAL SELECTION CONFERENCE

From the 21. September to the 26. September 2023 the National Selection Conference of EYP CH will take place in the canton of Ticino. Under the theme: “Finding strength in (re-)connection”, Ticino 2023 wants to show the strength that lies in collaboration and exchange between diverse groups of society. For only when we discover our commonalities and accept our differences, can we shape a promising future through cooperation and understanding. That is why Ticino 2023 will host a series of unique cultural events, meant to stimulate exchange between the participants and celebrate their diverse backgrounds.

In line with the theme, Ticino presents the perfect location for the Session. Often reduced to a tourist hotspot, we wish to highlight the beauty and diversity of Switzerland’s only fully Italianspeaking canton. As participants physically cross the border of the Alps, get to know different cities and create both intercantonal as well as international connections, the vision of the session becomes a reality.

It is the great honour of both us and our exceedingly passionate as well as capable team of organisers to return EYP to Ticino after over a decade. Every member of our team has been giving it their all to make this session become reality, learning new skills on the way and growing closer as a team. Furthermore we all feel extremely fortunate to be able to welcome Mario Branda, mayor of Bellinzona and Marco Romano, Member of the National Council Center as our first patrons to the session. We are also honoured to be able to call the Università della Svizzera Italiana and the Istituto Studi Filosofici as official partners of the event.

We are more than excited for the next 9 months of organising the NSC Ticino 2023, and can’t wait to welcome the participants from all over Switzerland and Europe!

Excited to see you Ticino, Max Behrendt and Raya Giger

BOARD PORTFOLIOS 2022

25

PRESIDENT

The role of the President of the Board of the European Youth Parliament Switzerland can be likened to the captain of a ship. Just as a captain and their crew are responsible for charting the course of their vessel, the Board is responsible for setting the direction and goals of the European Youth Parliament. They provide guidance and leadership to ensure that we as an organisation stay on track and achieve our objectives.

2022 was a year filled with stormy waters. A beacon of light at the start of spring 2022 were the Regional and Digital Sessions. EYP Switzerland continued with the digital session format as well as reintroducing in-person Regional Sessions with the organising team of Bern 2022, thanks to the courage, knowledge and dedication of a new generation of EYPers who embody the resilience and capacity for innovation of the organisation and the people who carry it.

In the meantime, due to complications within the organisation, the water remained turbulent and the Board of EYP Switzerland had to take over organising the National Selection Conference. This means the majority of funding, finding venues, patrons and a lot more were completed by a small group of individuals who dedicated countless hours to the event.

Thankfully they were joined by the know organising team, who were able to take the completed tasks and shape Basel 22 into their own event. Those of us who have been there from the beginning can not express in words how proud we are of your achievements and thank you for the wonderful session held in September. Many delegates have stayed committed to the organisation post their first nationals and it is due to your hard work. Furthermore, the majority have been able to travel abroad due to the excellent job done by Valérie Cafaro.

The storm continued to brew within the months following the session, however there have been many moments of sunshine with members events organised primarily by Louise Lange. As a volunteer-based organisation, EYP Switzerland relies on individuals stepping up to carry the organisation forward. Beyond the individual, however, it only functions if we come together and work towards our common goals as a team.

As For EYP Switzerland to continue in the future, we rely on new members to take up positions of responsibility in our events and on the Board, in order to shape the course of the organisation in the years to come.

After three years on the Board and almost seven years in the organisation, I am leaving my role of President, feeling excited by the changes we have been able to implement as an organisation and excited to see how future generations will continue to grow and mould EYP Switzerland.

My last words go to Johannes, Can, Louise, Valérie, Leonardo and Matthias. I am humbled by their strength, dedication and perseverance that have kept EYP Switzerland afloat. I owe you my thanks and my utmost respect. To end my sea analogy I’d like to quote Robin Sharma: “Rough seas make stronger sailors. Tough times build greater people.”

Thank you.

26

Can Keskinaslan

VICE-PRESIDENT, NATIONAL COORDINATOR

The department of National Coordination had been experiencing turbulent times for the past years now, and 2022 showed how the hard work of so many people had finally paid off. With the acute problems of dwindling participant numbers and schools dropping out experiencing major improvements, it was possible once again to shift the focus to the longer-term strategic development of EYP Switzerland’s national network. Teacher engagement, member retention and the optimization of our organisational processes were the main aspects of the 2022 national strategy and will define the direction of this department’s work for the coming year as well.

This year’s NSC again saw delegate application numbers well beyond our capacities, a testimony to increasing interest from students to participate in our sessions, following a significant setback due to the COVID pandemic. We hope to accommodate more participants with future NSCs being planned at higher capacities. We have also seen our school network growing this year, having seen new additions from Schaffhausen, Bern, Ticino, and Zurich. This way, EYP Switzerland is now better represented in the eastern and southern regions of Switzerland, two areas with significant gaps in the previous years. A project started in 2022 and continuing into 2023 is the building of a sustainable members and alumni database, for improved member retention and follow up.

Teachers are valuable assets to us, introducing their students to EYP and accompanying them to sessions, they can provide us with important feedback to further improve our organisational and operational processes. This year, we have started reworking especially our signup process for sessions, to avoid redundancies and keep teachers looped in better. In addition, the communication with teachers has become more open and direct by the introduction of a Slack channel, for quicker and easier exchange.

Thanks to many highly motivated individuals, EYP Switzerland was able to conduct three InSchool Sessions in 2022, helping outreach efforts at new schools and showing students what an EYP experience could look like. They are also particularly helpful to introduce delegates into the role of chairing. In 2023 we have at least 5 ISSs confirmed, showing the increasing interest from schools for these types of events.

27

INTERNATIONAL COORDINATOR

EYP Switzerland had a successful year concerning International Coordination and participating in most of the International Events in 2022 and welcoming international officials and delegates to our events.

Events

The year 2022 had quite a lot of exciting events to offer in terms of international meetings discussing policies and strategies for the future of the network. Although I could not attend all of the events myself, I was thrilled to see great collaboration within the board enabling the representation of EYP Switzerland in important events of the network. With this, Vice-President and National Coordinator Can Keskinaslan represented EYP Switzerland in Poland at the HR Summit in Warsaw, Poland and External Relations Board Member Johannes Hahn represented the NC at the autumn BNC in Berlin. Altogether we have gained a lot of insights and were able to exchange ideas with our broader network.

Delegates coming to CH

All in all, we were supposed to welcome 28 international delegates at the National Selection Conference Basel 2022. These delegates came from the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and Bulgaria. It was truly an exciting opportunity to support National Committees from close by but also from far away and welcome them for an exchange of scenery.

Delegates going abroad

When I took over the portfolio there were a few open ends, where the session promised to selected delegates from Biel 2021 were not able to attend the events. Thus, I did my best to find spots for the affected delegations abroad and sent delegates to sessions in Ljubljana and Sarajevo.

Next to that, we were able to send delegates abroad for the summer International Session of the Network in Riga and Kortrijk as planned. For this year’s NSC 70 out of 90 Swiss delegates were offered a spot to participate in a session abroad. Given that there are currently fewer ISs and IFs than in previous years, I was very pleased with the outcome and I am excited to see our delegates get the chance to go abroad.

Projects

At International events, I have discussed the possibility of a cultural exchange with National Committees in similar positions like Switzerland. One partner that became very obvious was the NC of Norway. However, due to their current commitments with the International Session in Tromsø and our commitments to our National Events, no concrete plans were able to be set in motion.

28

REGIONAL COORDINATOR

The year 2022 marked an important milestone for post-COVID EYP Switzerland. For the first time in its history, the organisation would see its regional cycle taking place in both a digital as well as a physical format in the same year.

Throughout the learnings of the 2021 cycle, which took place fully online, we could improve our digital sessions, which served for young Swiss and Europeans to get a first taste of EYP activities from the comfort of their home. While not the norm, digital sessions included considerable upsides, such as eliminated travel costs, opening up the platform to more participants.

On the other hand, physical Regional Sessions (RSs) represent a core part of EYP Switzerland events, as their are the first door to be opened for the EYP journey of many. We were thus eager to end the hiatus from physical RSs, which had lasted two years. While the COVID world made planning any physical event incredibly difficult and unpredictable at times, the RS of Bern 2022 finally marked the moment in-person Regional Sessions were reality again.

Throughout the unpredictable times of early 2022, we were hence able to hold two online sessions,

namely the 3rd Digital Session (DS) of EYP Switzerland, followed by the 4th DS; as well as the first RS of EYP Switzerland after the beginning of the COVID pandemic, Bern 2022.

The academic teams responsible for the RSs in 2022 were led by Šimon Prek (CZ), Lily-Rose Temple (IE) and Sude Kınık (TR) respectively. The Presidents were assisted in their duties by two Vice-Presidents, leading teams of six to eight chairpersons. The academic output, stemming from Topic Overviews to the Resolutions finalised at the sessions, was based on a blend of different topics both relating to the COVID pandemic and to other pressing European political topics. A big thank you to the academic teams of the sessions for their hard work and effort.

The media teams of the Sessions were respectively lead by Carina Hauri (CH) and Julijana Živković (RS), Hannah Oehry (CH) and David Wright (IE).

Hannah and David were assisted by one to two Editorial Assistants, and the media teams were composed of four to six media team members. For the first time in its history, EYP Switzerland’s RSs saw both physical and digital media projects published at their sessions. We are very grateful for the hard work of the media teams to ensure that this important year in EYP Switzerland’s history does not go forgotten.

The COVID pandemic remained a deciding factor for EYP Switzerland’s RSs in 2022. However, through all the unpredictability and complications which early 2022 brought, the Organising Teams of both the DS and Bern 2022 were able to bring memorable events, filled with laughter and learnings, to fruition. A huge thank you to Sara, Elsa, Lucy, Katarina and Milica and their teams for putting in countless hours, and challenging themselves to simultaneously continue the streak of digital EYP Switzerland events, and reinstating the physical status of our Regional Sessions.

29

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

The portfolio External Affairs is aimed at administering the relations with external partners, namely contacts with long-term sponsors.

The past year has been a challenging one from the perspective of the External Affairs department. The NSC Basel organizing process dominated the first part my term as EYP Switzerland did not have Head Organizers for the event until May 2022. Hence, the External Affairs department was responsible ensuring compliance with the requirements of our major foundation partners and various other organizational tasks. While some of these tasks did not at first glance fall within the scope of the External Affairs department, they nonetheless constituted an important contribution for the future of EYP Switzerland.

With the amazing support of my coboard member Mia van der Merwe as well as Carina Hauri and Devis Sela, it was possible to organize the NSC Basel 2022 successfully. For their support in this endeavor under the current difficult and sometimes demotivating circumstances, I would like to express my upmost gratitude.

In line with this strong focus on the NSC, the second part of my term focused on finalizing post-session reports for sponsors as well as helping the incoming NSC Ticino 2023 start their fundraising journey. To round of the term, the External Affairs department held a workshop on membership inclusion at the annual Movetia project lounge on the 1st February 2023.

Overall, EYP Switzerland still finds itself in a challenging human resources situation after more than two years of a global pandemic. With the work done during this term, the department hopes to have delivered its contribution to support EYP Switzerland during this period.

30

FINANCES

As the Treasurer of the European Youth parliament Switzerland, I am pleased to present the financial part of the annual report for the past year. I am proud to say that the financial health of the EYP remains strong, and that we have been able to effectively manage our resources to further support our mission and programs.

During the past year, we managed to utilize our resources efficiently, largely due to the successful pursuit of our fundraising strategies and cost-saving measures. Our expenses have been carefully monitored, and we have made a concerted effort to prioritize programs and initiatives that will have the greatest impact on our members and the wider European community.

In the department of finance and membership one of the key events of the past year was the successful completion of the annual session in Basel, which saw the participation of over 120 participants from all across Europe. The event was a great success, and the feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. The financial support from our partners and sponsors was instrumental in making this event possible, and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all those who contributed.

Looking forward, EYP Switzerland will continue to focus on providing quality sessions on different scales and other events to our members, while maintaining a strong financial position. We will continue to explore new funding opportunities and to implement cost-saving measures, in order to ensure that EYP remains a financially sustainable organization.

In conclusion, I would like to express my deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the entire EYP community, and for the support of our members, partners, and sponsors. I am confident that, together, we will continue to achieve great things.

NATIONAL EVENTS & MEMBERS’ COORDINATION

National Events

After two years of having to host restricted events or not even being able to host events whatsoever, I can happily say that EYP Switzerland’s events are officially back! 2022 has been a very good year for the National Events department. After the Annual General Meeting in February, we had a total of five events for our members and a total of more than 60 people attending the events!

In April we held a Town Hall in Berne. At the Town Hall, members and board members of EYP CH came together to discuss the workings of our organisation. Members came with questions, suggestions and other input concerning EYP Switzerland and how we can improve. This was a successful and fruitful event with interesting and important discussions followed by a delicious brunch! We hope to continue hosting a Town Hall on a yearly basis!

In the beginning of July, we had our annual summer event where we had a lovely picnic at the Rentenwiese in Zurich and went swimming.

A couple of months later, the National Selection Conference 2022 was held in Basel. Towards the end of the NSC, the organisers of the session had planned a monochrome-themed party which was open to all members of EYP Switzerland. A big thank you to everyone who put so much effort into the NSC Basel, it was an amazing session!

Following the NSC Basel, our annual Members’ Weekend took place in Berne. Over thirty people joined the weekend to attend modules on interesting topics like becoming a chairperson, going abroad with EYP and much more. The modules were kindly held by our more experienced members as well as board members. Aside from attending modules, we spent the weekend getting to know each other, cooking, eating and playing games.

Our last event of the year was the Holiday Dinner. More than forty members of EYP Switzerland came together in Zurich to celebrate the festive season. We celebrated with fondue, mulled wine, games, gift giving and a 2022 quiz. It was very exciting to see so many new faces at this event!

Now that we are moving on from the pandemic, I am very excited to see what is in store for us in 2023!

Member Coordination

This portfolio also handles any new request to become a member of EYP Switzerland, and we had a few requests this year that did not come from participants of our Regional Sessions. They are all advised on how to join EYP CH and get the most from the network, be it by attending the upcoming events or directly sign up for our regional sessions.
