nternational Day of Non-violence is an annual celebration observed by all the United Nations member states on the 2nd of October. The event is held to commemorate and highlight the remarkable power of non-violence and peaceful protest, also an occasion to disseminate the message of non-violence through education and public awareness. On this particular date, the UN also celebrates the birth anniversary of the Indian activist Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. ORIGIN OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NONVIOLENCE Iranian Nobel laureate proposed for an International Day of Non-Violence in January 2004. The proposal gradually attracted the interest of some of India’s Congress Party leaders. Finally, in January 2007, a Conference resolution in New Delhi was held and initiated by the Indian National Congress President, Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Sonia Gandhi, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. They agreed on the adoption of the idea. Therefore, on 15th June 2007, in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, United Nations Assembly voted and established 2 October as the International Day THE POWER IS NOW MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2021

Besides contributing to the Indian freedom struggle, he also fought to enhance societal changes that influenced the entire world. Most of all, he brought to the world the notion of Non-violence. Unfortunately, Mahatma was killed on January 30th, 1948, by a Hindu nationalist.
