International Day of Non-Violence

“Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man” Stated Mahatma.

International Day of Non-violence is an annual celebration observed by all the United Nations member states on the 2nd of October. The event is held to commemorate and highlight the remarkable power of non-violence and peaceful protest, also an occasion to disseminate the message of non-violence through education and public awareness. On this particular date, the UN also celebrates the birth anniversary of the Indian activist Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. More about Mohandas Karamchad Gandhi Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known, is one of the few leaders who left a lasting legacy as an imprint on the nation. He was born on October, 2nd 1969, and studied law. He led an independent movement against the British, the Dandi Salt March, in 1930 and launched the Quit India Movement. Besides contributing to the Indian freedom struggle, he also fought to enhance societal changes that influenced the entire world. Most of all, he brought to the world the notion of Non-violence. Unfortunately, Mahatma was killed on January 30th, 1948, by a Hindu nationalist.

ORIGIN OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NONVIOLENCE

Iranian Nobel laureate proposed for an International Day of Non-Violence in January 2004. The proposal gradually attracted the interest of some of India’s Congress Party leaders. Finally, in January 2007, a Conference resolution in New Delhi was held and initiated by the Indian National Congress President, Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Sonia Gandhi, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. They agreed on the adoption of the idea. Therefore, on 15th June 2007, in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, United Nations Assembly voted and established 2 October as the International Day

of Non-Violence. This particular date was chosen since it coincides with Mahatma’s birth date, and it’s supposed to act as a reminder to strive to uphold values he lived by; Equal protection for all, the dignity of promotion, and communities living together in peace.

HOW THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF NON-VIOLENCE IS OBSERVED

Through random acts of kindness – In a world full of choices, always choose to be kind. Brighten up someone’s day; it could be a stranger even. It’s the little things that matter the most. Organizing events-Official events are held worldwide by the UN to enable people to come together as a sign of their togetherness against violence.

IMPORTANCE OF THIS DAY Raises awareness

Through the International Day of Non-violence, people all over the world acknowledge and appreciate the need for a violence-free world and the peace it brings to their lives.

Brings social change

Enables people to use non -violent actions to make their voices heard. Instead of war and violence, people prefer peaceful protests and interventions, and marches to spread ideas.

It dramatically helps solve conflicts

Due to globalization, there are more issues to solve. Non- violence is crucial to find the solutions. International Day of Non-violence gives people the realization of the keys to global problems. Finally, International Day of Non-violence honors the global impacts of Gandhi’s work and legacy.

This year’s celebrations should be special; we are all facing a common problem, the COVID-19. Let’s focus on fighting the pandemic rather than fighting and being unjust to each other. It’s high time to be each other’s keeper. It’s not about how much you can give or offer; it’s about making someone else believe in the goodness of people.
