BLUE NANOTECHNOLOGY: THE PROFITABLE FUTURE OF AQUACULTURE IN ENSENADA

Ensenada has not only gained international prestige for its wine and beer industries, but it hasalsopositioneditselfasakeyplayerinthe development of aquaculture, particularly in the cultivation of bivalve mollusks such as oysters and clams This productive activity took a decisive turn following the tuna embargo imposed by the United States in the 1990s, which severely impacted the regional fishingeconomy.Thedeclineinexportsforced local stakeholders to rethink their production model, paving the way for diversification and thestrengtheningofalternativecropssuchas bivalves.

Faced with this situation, investment in science and technology became a strategy for recovery and growth. The presence of researchcenterssuchastheEnsenadaCenter for Scientific Research and Higher Education (CICESE), the UNAM Center for Nanosciences and Nanotechnology (CNYN), and the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC)

has transformed Ensenada into a true breeding ground for scientific talent, especially in the areas of biosciences and nanotechnology. Thanks to this academic infrastructure and an active scientific community, an ecosystem has emerged where applied research directly impacts regionaleconomicdevelopment.

Nanotechnologicalsolutionsattheserviceof thesea.

In this context, nanotechnology offers concrete solutions to strengthen the fishing and aquaculture sectors. Technologies such as nanobubbles are revolutionizing cold chains for the transportation of seafood, improving the preservation of mollusks and freshfish, reducingqualityloss, andextending their shelf life without resorting to harsh chemicals.

Nanosensors also allow real-time monitoring of parameters such as temperature, salinity, oxygenation, and the presence of pathogens in hatcheries, facilitating a rapid response to diseases that have historically affected species such as oysters Early detection and environmental monitoring at the nanoscale can be key to avoiding significant economic losses.

One of the most promising advances is the use of targeted medicine systems to treat diseases in bivalves. Using functionalized nanoparticles, therapeutic agents can be selectively delivered to tissues affected by bacteria, viruses, or parasites without compromisingtheoverallhealthofthecropor contaminating the environment. These strategies not only reduce antibiotic use but alsoincreasetheeffectivenessoftreatments

On the other hand, progress is being made in the design of biosensors based on carbon nanotubes and metal oxides, capable of being integrated into smart platforms for the comprehensive management of the marine ecosystem. These sensors can detect contaminants, physiological changes in culturedorganisms, andeventracesofheavy metals, thus contributing to safer and more responsibleproduction.

Opportunities for economic development with alocalstamp.

At the recent 16th Workshop on Shells and New Wine, held at the Center for Viticultural Studies (CEVIT) at CETYS University, these issues were addressed and opportunities for innovation in this industry were highlighted. Institutions such as the Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture, SEMARNAT (National Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture), CONAPESCA (National Commission for the Conservation of Nature), CICESE (Center for the Study of New Wine), IMIPAS (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences), and other strategic players in the sectorparticipated.

This event reaffirmed the importance of investing in research and technological development as pillars of sustainable growth. It also highlighted a critical paradox facing Mexico: while raw materials for components used in marine farming systems are manufactured, theyareexportedforprocessing andthenreimportedathighprices.

Here, nanotechnology can enable more efficient production processes, allowing this transformation to occur locally, generating employment, reducing costs, and fostering nationalsupplychains.

An example of this is corrosion- and biofouling-resistant nanocomposite materials, which extend the lifespan of structures such as nets, cages, and anchoring systems. The implementation of these materials not only reduces maintenance costs but also lessens the environmentalimpactofmarinedebris.

The goal is to advance these solutions through the design of advanced materials, diagnostic devices, water purification systems, and controlled-release technologies that can provide added value totheentireaquacultureproductionchain.

The region thus has the opportunity to establish itself as a hub of innovation in "blue nanotechnology," integrating cuttingedge science with real production needs. In a post-tuna embargo scenario, this approach not only guarantees greater food sovereignty but also makes Ensenada and Calibaja regions leaders in sustainable, competitive, and technologically advanced aquaculture.

Investing in nanotechnology applied to the ocean is not science fiction: it is a tangible, profitable, and urgent strategy to protect ocean resources and boost regional economicdevelopment.

Did you know that a single nanobubble can be up to 250 times smaller than the width of a human hair and still significantly improve water oxygenation in shellfish farms? These tiny bubbles not only increase the efficiency of aquaculture farming, but also help reduce disease and improve the quality of the final product, making production more profitableandsustainable.
