All the biggest and most modern cities in the world host a renowned marathon for fans of the sport. They proudly claim their place within the vast international network of marathons and give their inhabitant runners the chance to participate in this mythic event, which is laden with symbolism.
Todas estas maratonas geram hoje valores muito elevados, quer no âmbito material, quer no domínio do imaterial. O valor económico de uma maratona deste calibre é enorme para as cidades e para as suas regiões metropolitanas. O impacto no turismo local, regional e nacional não pode ser ignorado. Poucos outros eventos geram os mesmos resultados.
All of the marathons held today promote very strong values, both in material and immaterial terms. The economic worth of a marathon of this caliber is enormous for cities and their metropolitan areas. The impact on local, regional and national tourism cannot be ignored. Few other events yield the same results.
Para cada vez mais pessoas, correr uma maratona inscreve-se no rol restrito de desafios que se tem de alcançar durante a vida. A 16ª edição da Maratona do Porto é o resultado final do esforço da empresa RunPorto, liderada pelo Jorge Teixeira. Num registo continuo muito se tem investido na inovação. A tecnologia, o ambiente, a comunicação e, sobretudo, a atenção às pessoas e às suas necessidades, têm marcado pontos de grande significado nesta, já considerada, “indústria” internacional da corrida. Muito pouco deste progresso seria possível sem o envolvimento das cidades do Porto, Gaia e Matosinhos. A corrida une o que a divisão administrativa delimita. No dia da maratona são também estes três municípios que unem esforços para o resultado final. No fim dos 42,195 km, são também estas cidades que cortam a meta, com sucesso. Uma palavra de reconhecimento é devida para os patrocinadores do evento. Também eles contribuem muito para o sucesso de todo o evento.
Running a marathon is being included on more and more people’s bucket lists. The 16th edition of the Porto Marathon is the result of the efforts made by Runporto, which is led by Jorge Teixeira, and huge amounts have continually been invested in innovation. Technology, the environment, communication and, above all, the attention paid to people and their needs are all factors that have had a huge impact on what can already be considered to be the international “industry” of races. Very little of this progress would be possible without the work done by the cities of Porto, Gaia and Matosinhos. The race unites these three towns, independently of city limits. On marathon day, it is also these three municipalities that join forces to get to the final result – they also get the glory of crossing the finish line at the 42.195 km marker. A word of appreciation is due to the event sponsors. They also contribute a tremendous amount to the success of the whole event.
Com base numa paixão, um homem sonhou, formou uma equipa, uma empresa, gerou eventos, contagiou e inspirou muitos atletas e iniciou a construção de uma tradição. Hoje vivemos a 16ª edição, amanhã outros, seguindo as passadas do percursor, comemorarão muitas outras edições da Maratona do Porto. Assim todos percebam e abracem os valores e ponham em prática os cuidados necessários para preservar e incrementar a qualidade deste grande evento.
Taking route in a passion, a man dreamed, pulled together a team, a company, generated events, spread and inspired many athletes and began building a tradition. Today, we get to live out the 16th edition; tomorrow will hold others, which shall follow in the steps of that first pioneering event. Many more editions of the Porto Marathon await. Each and every person present must understand and embrace the values and put into practice the care needed to preserve and increase the quality of this great event.
