Le Domaine du Rayol est avant tout un espace naturel protégé témoin de la végétation de la Corniche des Maures. Les 7 hectares de jardin conservent une grande partie de la flore typique du maquis et des pinèdes méditerranéennes. Arbousiers, bruyères arborescentes, chêneslièges ou cistes sont autant d’exemples d’espèces autochtones prospérant ici.

The Domaine du Rayol is first and foremost a protected natural area that bears witness to the vegetation of the Corniche des Maures. The 7-hectare garden preserves much of the flora typical of Mediterranean scrub and pine forests. Arbutus, tree heather, cork oak and rockrose are just some of the native species that thrive here.

On le dit venu de Jérusalem ou d’Alep. De l’est du bassin méditerranéen, c’est plus certain. Il partage son nom avec un célèbre savon, mais c’est à la roche et au vent que ce cher pin d’Alep (Pinus halepensis) doit sa silhouette, pâle et tenace.

They say it came from Jerusalem or Aleppo. More likely, it hails from the eastern Mediterranean basin. It shares its name with a famous soap, but it owes its pale, supple, and resilient silhouette to the rock and the wind — this dear Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis).
La lavande des Maures (Lavandula stoechas), au parfum camphré, guidait jadis les marins. Associée parfois à l’immortelle (Helichrysum stoechas), elle embaume encore les îles d’Hyères, anciennement appelées les Stœchades.
The camphor-scented Maures lavender (Lavandula stoechas) once guided sailors. Sometimes found alongside the everlasting flower (Helichrysum stoechas), it still fills the air with its fragrance on the Hyères Islands, formerly known as the Stoechades.

Posée depuis 1927 sur l’éperon côtier de la Pointe du Figuier, la Villa Rayolet baigne dans les parfums mêlés du maquis et de la mer. Témoignage des villégiatures bourgeoises et balnéaires de l’époque, elle est aujourd’hui officiellement classée au titre des monuments historiques (depuis le 29 juin 1994). Elle abrite une exposition permanente dédiée à l’histoire du Domaine du Rayol, accueille des résidences d’artistes et propose régulièrement des formations.

Perched since 1927 on the coastal spur of Pointe du Figuier, the Villa Rayolet is steeped in the mingled scents of the maquis and the sea. A testament to the bourgeois and seaside retreats of the era, it is now listed as a Historic Monument. Today, it hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the Domaine du Rayol, welcomes artist residencies, and regularly offers training courses.
La germandrée arbustive (Teucrium fruticans) est protégée à l’état sauvage. Au Domaine, les plants cultivés viennent du commerce : ce statut les exclut des protections juridiques réservées aux populations naturelles.
The germander shrub (Teucrium fruticans) is protected in the wild. At the Domaine, cultivated plants come from commercial sources: this status excludes them from the legal protection reserved for natural populations.
La bruyère arborescente (Erica arborea), fréquente dans les Maures, déploie ses clochettes blanches au printemps. Son bois dense, autrefois prisé pour les têtes de pipes, se cache sous un feuillage fin et forme de hautes silhouettes pouvant atteindre dix mètres.
Tree heather (Erica arborea), common in the Maures region, displays its white bell-shaped flowers in spring. Its dense wood, once prized for pipe-heads, hides beneath fine foliage and grows into tall trees reaching up to ten meters.
Situé au pied du massif des Maures, dans le Var, le Domaine du Rayol s’étend sur 20 hectares terrestres et 14 hectares d’aire marine protégée dans un site d’une exceptionnelle beauté. Acheté en 1989 par le Conservatoire du littoral, le paysagiste Gilles Clément y a recréé un ensemble de jardins évoquant les différents paysages méditerranéens du monde, ainsi que d’autres paysages « invités ». Aux antipodes d’une collection botanique, les plantes sont associées de façon à recréer de véritables paysages miniatures, d’une beauté sauvage et toujours renouvelée, quelles que soient les saisons.
Located at the foot of the Massif des Maures in the Var, Domaine du Rayol covers 20 hectares of land and 14 hectares of protected marine area, set in a site of exceptional beauty. Purchased in 1989 by the Conservatoire du Littoral, landscape architect Gilles Clément recreated a series of gardens evoking the different Mediterranean landscapes of the world, as well as other “guest” landscapes. Far from being a botanical collection, the plants are combined in such a way as to recreate miniature landscapes of wild beauty, ever-changing and beautiful in every season.
