Recently, we were browsing through the photos taken over 100 years ago by Brant photographer Lynn Walters. A motorcycle with sidecar caught our eye. We wondered about the emblem. What brand of motorcycle was this? We don’t know who the young lady is, and we are guessing that the photo was taken in Brant, NY. Around the same time, in the photos on loan to us by the Estate of William Haberer, we found a photo of a motorcycle which had the same emblem. We believe this photo was taken on Main Street in the village of Angola, but once again, the person in the photograph is not identified.

Both photos raised our curiosity about the emblems and the type of motorcycles, so we decided to spend some time investigating online. (We were hoping they were the Emblem Brand motorcycles made in Angola, NY at the Emblem Mfg. Company, but sadly they were not.) For the Brant photo, we determined it is an Excelsior Twin Autocycle with sidecar (circa 1911 – 1917). The bike in the Angola photo is also an Excelsior. The manufacturer is the Excelsior Motor and Equipment Co., Chicago, Ill. USA. Not only for recreational use, these types of motorcycles were also used by the New York National Guard in 1917 according to a few of the articles we came across. (There is a lot of information out there!) We were also intrigued by the treads on the tires, and found out that they are NON-SKID tires (the letters are quite visible), American made in Akron, Ohio, by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. In all our searching, we uncovered another fun fact: The Excelsior Company developed the first motorcycle capable of reaching 100mph. Pretty cool!!

Eden Family Dental has invested in two new pieces of equipment that we are excited to utilize for our patients.

Our doctors and assistant have been trained to use a digital scanner to view our patient's teeth in 3D. This is a no-radiation scanner and, in many cases, can eliminate the need to take goopy impressions of the mouth. This makes our appointments quicker and less risk of gagging during impressions.

These scans transmit within seconds to our in-house dental mill, which employs CAD-CAM (computer aided design and manufacturing) to fabricate ceramic crowns within 40 minutes. This allows our patients to be fitted with their permanent dental crown at one visit, rather than returning in 1-2 weeks or wearing a temporary crown.

We all like to complain about what’s wrong with our lives, but we each have much for which we should be thankful. At Thanksgiving it is most important to remember our blessings.
