Wednesday May 21, 2025 was an exceptionally rainy day in Eden, but at Respite inside the Eden United Methodist Church was dancing and familiar songs of rain being sung. The Eden North Collins Singers, under the direction of George Adams, performed the contata of Noah and His Floating Zoo. More entertainment delighted the guests when tap dancers arrived in their raincoats and umbrellas in hand to dance to the all-time favorite melody “Just Singing in the Rain.” Lunch was served and the remainder of the day was spent potting fowers, and singing and dancing to the music of accordionist Dave Gawronski. May ‘25 marks the tenth anniversary of the inception of the Eden Respite Program. At no charge, the program offers support, activities and lunch by trained volunteers for individuals suffering from dementia, giving the caregiver a much needed break.

Prior to Memorial Day, local school children and parents visited Whirlwind Veterans and Warrior Retreat to learn what Memorial Day is about along with understanding how to replace a weathered fag properly. The children ended their visit trying MRE meals and planting a tree on the Retreat to remember those who fought for our freedoms and paid the ultimate sacrifce.

The Brant Cemetery board members, stopped for a quick photo, but had been hard at work preparing for the MEMORIAL DAY weekend in 2024 and will be doing so again late May 2025. The committee has a defnite routine for sweeping off the gravestones, preparing the potting soil and planting the urns, however, the most important task of the day is placing the AMERICAN fags at the graves of all our Veterans. Shown in the photo (L-R) gathered around our CIVIL WAR CANNON are John Grennell, Chet Kozlowski, and Bill and Lynette Ellison. Kneeling is Mark Winters, who is the leader that keeps us all on track and moving to get the job done! There to help, but camera shy: Barbara Kozlowski and photographer Patty Friend.

In the heart of KeyBank Center, Where the Bandits play.
Orange and black, with pride in their eyes. The Buffalo Bandits reach for the skies. They battled through many seasons, Through the sweat and pain.
Seven banners now hang high, Where the legends compete.
Now three championships won in a row, The glorious three-peat.

Winner of BRANT-FARNHAM Historical Society’s “GUESS THE PLACE” Contest Announced!
In celebration of the Town of Brant’s 186th birthday on March 25th, a contest was advertised in the Angola and Eden-North Collins Pennysavers at the end of March. $50.00 cash would be awarded to the winner who was able to “GUESS THE PLACE” from an uncaptioned photo.
An extremely observant Pennysaver reader, Mr. Neno LaRusso, quickly submitted his entry. He even took his envelope to the Angola Post Offce for a hand cancel to meet the postmark deadline of April 15th! His entry absolutely had the correct answer: “The fag raising ceremony took place at the Farnham Grammar School (Brant Dist. #5) located at the corner of Commercial St. and Erie Road.”
Pictured in the photo is Town of Brant Historian Patty Friend presenting Neno LaRusso with his winnings of $50.00 cash. They met at Azalia’s Juicery & Cafe in the village of Angola, NY on April 29th! Good work Neno - we are happy for your participation in helping us to celebrate the Town of Brant’s 186th Birthday!

In the Village of North Collins, there were two separate but devout groups of Catholics, both considered merely missions of other churches until after 1900. Services were held in various places until both churches were built. In 1902, the parish of St. John the Baptist was organized. A church was built on Brant Street in 1904, just west of the Village for approximately 25 English-speaking families. The pastors lived in rented quarters, often with families, for many years. Until a large horse shed was built, people coming from a distance had to leave their horses and buggies in the Village and walk down to the church. A cemetery lot was purchased in 1905 on Gowanda State Road at the corner of Shirley Road.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish was organized in 1907. The frst services were held in a small building near what is now Valone Avenue on Thiel Road donated by the canning company for which many of the Italian families worked. A wood frame church was built on the corner of Spruce and High Streets in 1907-1908 to serve the Italian-speaking members of the community. This parish acquired a lot for a cemetery at the corner of Brant Road and Mile Block.
The two parishes merged in 1948 and needed a larger building for the merged parish, and a building committee was able to purchase the large lot at the corner of Gowanda State Road and Halley Road. The new combined parish was named Holy Spirit Parish and the congregation moved into their new church at the end of 1958, with the frst Mass being celebrated on Christmas Day, 1958. Over the years, both original churches were torn down and Holy spirit Parish continued until the last Mass was celebrated on December 29. 2024, when parishioners joined with other existing parishes under the name of the Catholic Family of the Rosary. The parish processed with the Holy Eucharist to its new home at Immaculate Conception Church in Eden. A sad day for many.

“If you know what is enough, you will have enough. But if you wait until you have enough, you will never have enough.”-- Confucius
What is enough? It’s crucial to have enough food, clothing and shelter to survive normal days. Having enough money to provide for emergencies or to carry you through several months of normal expenses is usually suggested by financial experts.
But so often we chase the accumulation of possessions thinking that they will make us happy and satisfied. We think... if only I had a new house... if only I had a new car... a new TV....a new pair of shoes.... We think we need more.
Most of us already have “enough” things in this life and are confusing “needs” with “wants.” Learning to be satisfied with the things we already have in our lives could bring us to a greater acceptance and peace.
