Perrysburg Church to Re-open

For 198 years the United Methodist Church conducted services in Perrysburg, building the current church at 12035 Main St. (Rt. 39) in 1853. The church closed in October of 2017 and is set to re-open on Sunday, April 5, at 9 am.

The property was purchased by the Faith Bible Baptist Church of Eden, NY, and various churches have been working very hard over the winter to renovate the entire building (fresh paint, new carpet, new chairs, and more). The church will open as a satellite ministry of Faith Bible Baptist under the name of Countryside Baptist Church.

Sunday services will be conducted all year at 9 am. Thursday night mid-week services will begin March 5 at 7 pm and will be held every Thursday night from March through November.

The focus will be on praise, prayer, relevant Bible messages, and fellowship. This should result in a congregation being formed from the ground-up into a “family of God” in Perrysburg. Come on out to meet the Pastor and make some friends. The church invites you to come all the time or anytime.

Today: 3. It only takes on selfish person to wreck a marriage – In Genesis 3:1-19 we read about Adam and Eve, the first married couple. Eve had a perfect husband and lived in a perfect environment – the garden of Eden. Tempted by Satan she began to think she was missing out on life by having to listen to God and her husband. The devil promised she would have it all if she broke loose from them.

He lied. Eventually she died. Her selfishness brought untold suffering on her marriage and her children when they came along 4. Be a good business partner – Marriage is a ministry and a business. Almost all marital misery begins with financial arguments. Be wise with your money. Have a budget. Stick to it.

Plan and save for the future. Have a content heart – the things of this world can never satisfy. Find satisfaction in God and in each other.

According to a history of the Brant Strawberry Festival, “the highlight of the festival was always the crowning of the strawberry festival queen and the grower of the best strawberries as the strawberry king. Each reigned for the subsequent year to participate in many activities in and out of New York State.”

The Brant firemen held a separate competition for the Firemen’s Queen. The Prince and Princess were awarded and crowned on Youth Day of the festival.

1965 marked the 10 year anniversary of the festival. Pictured are the “Royal Family” of the 1965 Brant Strawberry Festival.

Seated are King - Joseph L. Catalano and Queen - Roberta Kliment. In the back row we find Princess - Kathy Barefoot, Firemen’s Queen - Diane M. Catalano and Prince - John Grennell.

According to this same history booklet, the first Strawberry Festival Queen was Miss Penny Marrano in 1956. In 1957, both the first Prince - Clayton Seneca and the first Princess - Barbara Briggs were crowned. The first Firemen’s Queen - Gloria Rowe Tagliarino was crowned in 1958.

We will have to research to see who the first King was, but we do know that that last Brant Strawberry Festival King was Fred J. Gugino. He was crowned on June 21, 1970.

Hazel Marie Drake (nee: Hamilton) age 71, of Eden, New York and formerly of Winter Garden, Florida died suddenly in her home on Monday, February 10, 2020. She was a daughter of the late Theodore and Martha (Klienfelder) Hamilton. She was born on November 22, 1948 in Buffalo, New York. Hazel was married to her late husband; Mr. Daniel John Drake, Sr., who died on October 27, 2017. Together they had four children, Daniel John (Alisa) Drake, Jr., Sean Michael Drake, Dawn Marie (Randy Creamans) Drake and Brian Edward (Christine) Drake. Hazel is also survived by her grandchildren, Ian Daniel, Gavin Thaddaeus and August Reef. Hazel is also survived by her siblings, Eileen (late Paul) Boldt, JoAnn (Albert John) Griffin, Jamie Hamilton and Teddi (Raymond) Lillback. A memorial service will be held at at 3PM on Feb. 28th at Valley of Buffalo Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 2379 Union Rd Cheektowaga. Our review of a 1970 Brant Strawberry Festival booklet provided us with this photo of the “STARS” of the 1969 Brant Strawberry Festival (previous year activity was usually included in the current year booklets). Pictured are (L-R) BACK: Mr. Peter Pero, Outstanding Citizen, 1969, Miss Kathy Barefoot, 1969 Firemen’s Queen. FRONT: Edward Hamm, 1969 Prince, Heidi Datzer, 1969 Strawberry Queen and Rosemary Mecca, 1969 Princess. The Brant Strawberry Festival was in existence from 1957 thru and including 1970. The last festival booklet we have in our historical archives was issued in 1970. From this same booklet we learn that on YOUTH DAY of the festival, there were games for all groups ages 5 through 14. “The Prince and Princess were selected by their sportsmanship, conduct, and participation in activities”. Activities included the 25, 50 and 100 Yard Dash, Wheelbarrow Races, Sack Races, a Balloon Toss, Ball Throw and Tug of War. Winners of the Wheelbarrow races in 1969 were: Boys 6-8: Tim Barratt and Bob Tripi. Girls 6-8: Donna Chiavetta and Shari Chiavetta. Boys 9-11: Ed White and Ron Wasik. Girls 9-11: Kathy Barratt and Darlene Porsley. Boys 12-14: Mike Muffoletto and Daniel Kozlowski.
