“This flag which we honor and under which we serve is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation.”
- Woodrow Wilson.
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation and passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
But it wasn’t until 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Today it is seldom celebrated beyond organizations that respectfully destroy damaged, unusable flags on that day.
This year put your flag out and display it proudly as we remember that we are truly one nation united in a common purpose.
