Message from the Trustee Hey Key Clubbers!

I hope y’all have had a good school year so far. Going into senior year, I am feeling (surprisingly) motivated to do my best and finish the last mile! Even though I know y’all are busy with other extracurricular, schoolwork, and Netflix, but remember to make time for Key Club and, more importantly, service. With the beginning of each school year, the Membership Update Center is now open to start updating your member database. It is imperative that clubs start working on the MUC as soon as possible so Key Club International can have accurate, updated information about members. With the beginning of Fall, it’s also time for one of my favorite service projects of the school year: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. For Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, Key Clubbers dress up in their Halloween costumes not for candy but for spare change to scare neo-natal maternal tetanus away! Clubs that have ordered boxes in the past will be receiving them shortly. If your club wants to be involved and has not been involved in previous years, the boxes can be ordered through the Kiwanis store! Something else I’ve been excited about is the 2016 International Convention in peachy Atlanta, Georgia! This year, ICON will take place July 6-10th, and, as always, be a great chance to have fun and learn. It may be early, but now is the time to start saving up money for the trip. Make sure to ask local businesses, family members, or your high school to sponsor you! Trust me, it’ll definitely be worth it. More information can be found at keyclub.org/convention. I don’t know about you but I’m feeling a great new year for Key Club! I’m so excited and honored to serve as Eastern Canada’s International Trustee along with my other districts Florida and Illinois-Eastern Iowa. It’s going to be an amazing year full of service and leadership; I’m ecstatic to see what y’all accomplish in this upcoming year! As always, if you ever have any questions or comments, please let me know! Yours in service,

Amy Jiang

Major Emphasis

Major Emphasis: what is it? For some, it is academics -- for others, arts or other passions. For KEY Club, it is the overarching idea of service and charity, of generosity in thought, word, and deed, and of making a positive impact, no matter its size, in the life of the less privileged. The Major Emphasis Committee is the sector of the Eastern Canada District that focuses on community service and fundraising; it nourishes the core values on which the clubs thrive. The committee has three goals for the 2015-2016 scholastic year: informing Key Clubbers about Kiwanis International’s Preferred Charities, particularly the Eliminate Project, and providing accessible resources on running service and/or fundraising events, and establishing a directory of projects and events that Key Clubs may take part in. Nonetheless, its overarching goal is to inspire and motivate Key Clubbers to make a difference in their own communities, no matter how large or small.

- Amirthan Sothivannan Head of Major Emphasis Committee

Communication and Public Relations

Hi guys! I'm super excited to be your Communication and Public Relations head alongside the lovely Michelle Ye this year. We are in charge of spreading the word about all things Key Club and making sure that all our members are up-to-date about the great events happening in and around the Key Club community. Key Club is an amazing organization with a lot of moving parts, and it’s our job to make sure that everyone stays in the loop about what’s going on! We’re looking forward to a great year Key Clubbers, make sure to keep an eye out for more Key Club news!

- Kejie Zhang

Head of Communications and Public Relations

Kiwanis Family Relations The main purpose of the Kiwanis Family Relations committee is to pomote interactions between the branches of the Kiwanis Family and stay up to date with Key Club International's service partners. Building strong relations with the Kiwanis Family creates a stronger and closer bond of trust, happiness and guidance. Kiwanis is not just a fantastic organization but above all, it is a big welcoming family.

So what is the YOF? The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund by Key Club International. This grant gives clubs the opportunity to organize service projects and fundraisers that will build their homes, schools and communities. Clubs may apply for a grant from $100 - $2000 for a particular service initiative. The 2015-2016 YOF application form can be found at http://www.keyclub.org/service/fund/yof/yofgrant.aspx and are due for submission no later than October 15 at 11:59 pm EST. The application must be received by this date, not post-marked. Applicants will be informed about the amount granted by January 1. The application may be submitted via

How are applications judged? Applications are evaluated by a panel of five International Board members. Key Club International prepares a binder with all received applications which each judging Board member is responsible for reviewing independently. An International Board meeting is held at Kiwanis Headquarters at which the panel collectively discusses each application applic and makes an executive decision as to which projects will receive full funding, partial funding, or no funding. This past year, approximately 120 applications were submitted to Key Club I nternational and approximately $47,000 were given out in grants to clubs seeking out financial assistance for their respective service initiatives. The YOF is an incredibly useful tool, though it is not used as frequently as it should. There is a lot of inc money available to improve your service initiatives and make a difference in your community.

District Secretary-Treasurer

Before you apply.... Prior to filling out the application, determine what initiative your club would like to organize. The YOF accepts applications for both service projects and fundraisers, however, service projects tend to beg favor in the judging process. The application consists of club information, contact information, project information, project timeline, budget and signatures. Ensure that the application is filled out in its entirety and in detail; note that electronic signatures will not be accepted. A thorough and detailed timeline and budget makes for a more competitive application. Evidence of pre-planning and specific dates give your project more legitimacy. The judging panel also likes to see that the grant is not the only source of funding for your initiative. Attempt to acquire funding and sponsorships from other sources in addition to raising funds as a club.

For any questions, concerns or advice regarding preparing and submitting your YOF application, please do not hesitate to contact your District Secretary-Treasurer at dst@keyclub.ca.

Highlights from

Division 4 Division 4 has been creating fun memorable moments for high school students who have been committed members of Key Club. We also welcomed tons of high school students that has shown their interest in helping others, by their participation and cooperation at meetings. We're focusing on fundraisers that we know that can make a difference for the children in need, that's why we have been spreading "Kids Against Hunger". We are inviting anyone who can join us on events

- Dianne Cagalingan

Highlights from

Division 5 Division 5 started the school year off with a bang! At the beginning of September, Division 5 Key Clubbers attended a service project at the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto, ON. The members had an amazing time volunteering and truly felt that they had made a difference in the community. As well, Division 5 Key Clubs are up and running, and their members are working hard at bringing service to their homes, schools and communities. Let’s go Division 5!

- Sophia Song Lt. G of Division 5

Highlights from

Division 11/12 I first joined Key Club in grade 10. The year before I joined we had lost almost all of our key clubbers due to them graduating, but the club managed to keep going. The following year I was on the executive team as the Treasurer. Truthfully, it was badly run. We had all joined at the same time and were all brand-new members and just starting to learn more about Key Club and volunteer opportunities in the community. That year we didn’t do any big service project however, our main goal was to recruit new members. We succeeded, doubling our members! This year I am the President and our club su still has its struggles, but we also have our successes. This year Division 11/12 will be collecting 25’000 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, the SRHS Key Club will be doing fundraisers for the local food bank, and will be doing more things to get involved in the community so people can see that clubs like this still exist.
