LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hey ECD Key Clubbers! My name is Maxwell Sze, and I am serving as the ECD's District Editor for the 20202021 service year. I am a grade 12 student at AY Jackson Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario. I've been an active member of my school's Key Club since grade 9, and joined the board after two years as club treasurer. As the District Editor, I'm responsible for creating all promotional material, maintaining the ECD's social media pages, and publishing content like the EC Key you're reading right now! The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people around the world, creating lasting effects to be felt for years to come. From small businesses to global corporations to organizations like Key Club, everyone has been forced to adapt to a modified form of society, which includes gathering remotely to keep each other safe. With Key Club, this has meant a transition to online operations - from the Board all the way down to individual clubs. With virtual meetings and volunteering are the challenges that come with this reality - but I am confident in our collective Key Clubber spirit and know that the ECD will emerge from COVID-19 stronger than ever. Quick tip: Contact the Board if you ever need help! Just as you lead by serving your communities, we lead by serving you. In this EC Key issue, I present the 2020-2021 ECD Board and what will hopefully become our district service project for the year, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). You'll read letters from the District Governor and our International Trustee and meet Key Club International's partners and charities. Additionally, I provide some updates about upcoming events and highlight a couple in the past. If there's anything you'd like to say, feel free to shoot me an email anytime.

Yours in service, Maxwell Sze ECD District Editor Key Club International editor@keyclub.ca IG: @max._.overdrive

LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR Hello Key Clubbers! My name is Mansi Sethi, and I am honoured to say that I will be your District Governor for the 2020-2021 service year. I have been an active member of Key Club since 2017 and have since diversified my Key Club experiences by serving my home club as Co-President in 2018 and serving Division 8/9/10 as Lieutenant Governor this past service year in 2019. It is my pleasure to be able to serve you all and I look forward to meeting and collaborating with you throughout the year. This service year will be like no other. For those of you who know, the theme of the 2020 District Conference (DELC) was Service Heroes. DELC 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19 implications, but currently, we see firsthand the front line and essential workers who embody our values as Key Clubbers. This of all times is when we must share the Key Club spirit and keep morale high. These past few months have been unfamiliar and challenging for all Key Clubbers. The Eastern Canada District Board is working hard to create an equitable and enjoyable service year for all. In order to do so, we are working tirelessly to transition the Key Club model online. By focusing on resource development, social media outreach, and a revamp of our five year strategic plan, we are taking a proactive and sustainable approach in response to the presented challenges. I can not express enough how much you all inspire me through the hard work that you put in every day to make the community a better place, and I am incredibly excited to have a hand in what is to come in the future. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Your friend in service and friendship, Mansi Sethi ECD District Governor Key Club International governor@keyclub.ca (613) 415-1392

LETTER FROM THE INTL. TRUSTEE Hey Eastern Canada! My name is Lena Oswald and I'm so excited to have the honor to serve you as well as the Indiana and Rocky Mountain districts for the 2020-2021 service year! I can't wait to see what we can accomplish together and I'm so ready to get to know you all! This service year is going to be incredible! This year is going to require a lot of hard work, but I'm sure you're all up to the challenge! My job as a trustee is to be a resource and support for you. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. I look forward to getting to know you! While many plans we had for this year have been thrown off track, there is still so much we can accomplish and come back stronger than ever! The biggest focus I want to have this year is membership. Membership will be a difficult aspect of our jobs this year, but with some work, we can minimize the impact and set ourselves up for recovery. By focusing on the unique situation that your club is in and working to keep on serving your homes, schools, and communities, we can continue to spread service and leadership. Thank you all so incredibly much for the amazing opportunity to serve and represent you on the international board. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish and to helping you find success!

Hi there! My name is Mansi Sethi and I am very honoured to be your District Governor this service year. I am heading into my senior year at Sir Robert Borden High School. I joined Key Club in Grade 9 and after falling in love with the organization, I proceeded to serve my next to service years as Co-President of SRB Key Club and as LG of Divisions 8/9/10 respectively. This year, I will be focusing on member and club retention, district growth and the improvement of Kiwanis Family Relations. Other than Key Club, I am an active member of my school's Student Council, the Head of Operations at the Star of Life Project, and an avid competitive soccer player. On my off time, I love to listen to music, draw, and spend time with family and friends. I look forward to getting to know all of you wonderful people this service year.

AAYA MAHDi, EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

Hello Key Clubbers! My name is Aaya Mahdi and I am thrilled to be your Executive Assistant for the 2020 - 2021 service year. I am heading into my senior year at John McCrae Secondary School in Division 8/9/10 and have been involved with Key Club since my friend and I chartered our club in 2019. Leading John McCrae has been an amazing experience and I am looking forward to continuing the impact this year, on the district level. My goals this term are to grow and develop Key Club around the district by focusing on membership retention and club growth. In my spare time, I like to go out for runs, read a book or catch up on the newest shows on Netflix! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have, I’m always open to new conversation!

CAROLYN CHEN, District secretary

06

Hello! My name is Carolyn Chen and I am the ECD District Board Secretary for the 2020-2021 service year. I am a Grade 11 student attending Colonel By Secondary School, located in Ottawa, Ontario. My two district goals for this year are to come up with at least one new service project idea for my home club and to be able to get 5 friends to join Key Club. My Key Club experience started in Grade 9 and since then, I have made so many memorable memories that will last a lifetime. I previously served on the ECD District Board as the District Translator and will use the skills learned to help make this year even better! Other than serving on the District Board I also love to downhill ski and play tennis.

EXECUTIVE TEAM CHRIS PAK, District TREASUREr

Hello Keyclubbers, my name is Chris Pak, and I'm thrilled to serve another year on the Eastern Canada District Board as treasurer. I'm going into my senior year, and also currently finishing the International Baccalaureate program at Colonel By Secondary School. My favorite subjects are chemistry and math, and I love to spend my free time with my dog. During my spare time, I love to do research about technology and play the cello. This year, I hope to help other treasurers in the Eastern Canada District with managing finances within their club and helping to come up with ideas on how to have not only a fruitful year of service but also succeed financially as a club. Excited for another great year!

MAXWELL SZE, DISTRICT EDITOR Hi everyone! My name is Maxwell and I am going into my last year of high school at AY Jackson Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario. I joined Key Club in Grade 9, and quickly found a passion for giving back. I wanted to make a larger impact in my club, which led me to becoming club treasurer. DCON 2019 was an amazing event as I made friends across Canada, discovered the vast reach of Key Club, and found the opportunity of joining the Eastern Canada District Board. After being club treasurer for two years, I jumped at the opportunity of District Editor, and I was ecstatic at the opportunity to create (hopefully) the best graphics you'll ever see. Aside from Key Club, I am president of my school's FBLA chapter and administrator for Business SHSM / Business Council. During my free time, I play a wide assortment of video games (which has only expanded since quarantine), as well as recreational basketball and softball.

DIVISION 8/9/10 HIGHLIGHT A star-studded cast of suspects for the sold-out Virtual Murder Mystery extravaganza did justice to the efforts of co-organizers Key Club District Governor Mansi, Division 8/9/10 Lieutenant Governor Ada and KCO's Steve Georgopoulos. This Joint Key Club/KCO brought laughter and joy to the multi-generational and multi geographic K Family event. Very surprising and yet not surprising many attendees and suspects were seen in a very different light. Key Clubbers commented that they saw spontaneity in Kiwanis members they had never witnessed and or expected. Congratulations to: Audience poll for best costume was Firma French and best performance Sharon Martin. - WRITTEN BY LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF DIV. 8/9/10 ADA KUZUGUDENLI
