6 Elm City 2020 Annual Report

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Community, We are living through an unprecedented moment in time, and what gives me hope is our equally unprecedented commitment to meeting the needs of the people of New Haven and beyond. Our team stepped up to these challenges by continuing to do the essential work – guided by the principles that this housing authority was founded upon – to provide safe, decent homes for residents of New Haven with the opportunities they need to achieve their goals. Though this global pandemic has become our new normal, we’ve realized during this year that we have always had the foundation to weather this storm, to innovate and reimagine what affordable housing could truly look like in this city and in others.

RESOLUTIONS PASSED

We answered the call this year by investing in our communities which included over $650M in capital improvements to maintain the sustainable communities of choice we are known for. As our residents’ needs shifted in the wake of job losses and school closures, we canceled all evictions, provided rent relief, created new partnerships for services and offered the necessary technology for our families to stay connected and safe. As the pandemic showcased the disparities and injustices within our nation, we dug our heels in further to focus on equity, anti-racist policy, and housing reforms, continuing our fight for the needs of our most marginalized and disenfranchised communities. We know that the lasting impactful change we want to see will take time and we have learned that we have the right stuff to create a new fabric and stand up for the injustice that has prevailed for too long. Even though this year has separated us by distance, it has also brought a lot of us closer in many ways – to our own team members, to our residents, to our community partners, to our own convictions, to our shared grief and shared joys. It is said that stars shine brightest in the dark and, though these may seem like dark times, this can also be seen as a great opportunity to be a beacon of hope, to show our true metal, to honor our values and to do the work that will eventually bring us to the light. To the ECC/HANH team, our supporters, partners, investors, and residents, I offer my sincere gratitude. Thank you for helping us to #MakeADifference every day, together.
