The Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of New Haven
Homefront Creating a Connection with Our Communities and Neighbors
Welcome from the President ECC Members & Friends,
Tenant Commissioner Race Gains Momentum Among Residents The 2021 Tenant Commissioner election is in full swing this fall, and residents are ready to represent and be represented! Led by the Community and Economic Development (CED) team and the Women’s League of Voters, 8 housing authority residents – all women and prominent leaders in their communities – have been nominated by their peers and are interested in running for the position. The next steps are to finish filing their paperwork with the CED team and to campaign on their platforms with ECC/HANH residents. “We’re excited about this process and for our residents to exercise their rights and talents at a Board level,” said LaToya McCrea, Director of CED. She mentioned that there is a lot more interest in agency governance than in recent years and it’s refreshing to see. (cont’d pg. 5)

I also want to extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to Shenae Draughn for leading our community during the last several months. When I made the difficult decision to step away from Elm City Communities in April, I was confident that our organization’s outstanding work would continue under Shenae and that’s exactly what happened. Read on in this issue of The Homefront to see all the great work our agency has accomplished for our residents and our community. Over the past few months, we celebrated our high school graduates and had a successful Back to School Pop Up Fair across all our properties; we won The Preservation Trust Award for our Newhall Gardens development and continued progress with the redevelopment of Mill River Crossing; and we (cont’d pg. 2)
