Terwijl ik het artikel van Pure Nostalgie plaats, zie ik helaas weer overeenkomsten met nu. Demonstraties van studenten, mensen die minder geld te besteden hebben, en een oorlog in Europa. Helaas ook nieuws van deze dag.
Blijf positieve dingen doen; ik zeg het ook vaak tegen mezelf. Vervang negatieve gedachten door positieve, want dat heeft een gunstig effect op hoe je in het leven staat en wat je uitstraalt.
Gelukkig blijft Dominique ons artikelen sturen over hoe we kunnen bijdragen aan het milieu. Laten we daar spreekwoordelijk “de schouders onder zetten.”
En dan even wat luchtigs; Onlangs was er een oproep van een dame die graag een leuke man van rond de 70 wilde ontmoeten. We zijn weliswaar geen datingsite, maar ik heb altijd mensen willen helpen om te verbinden. Daarom leek het ons leuk om ons eerste speeddating-evenement op te zetten in de Gold Coast. Wilt u dit ook in uw gebied? Stuur me dan een mail, dan kijken we hoe we dit kunnen realiseren. Met mijn ervaring als evenementenmanager in het verleden, moet dat toch geen probleem zijn.
Veel plezier ook allemaal met het kijken naar de Europa cub voetbal.
En graag ook een oproep naar jullie toe om iets te schrijven voor de krant. Het kan van alles zijn. Een mooi gedicht, een lekker recept, een mooie foto gemaakt in Nederland of jouw kijk op politiek.

Law in the Netherlands is in a “state of neglect”
The rule of law in the Netherlands is in a “state of neglect” and a sizeable number of citizens are not being protected either by or from the government, according to a government commission. “Too often, has heard reports of government using legal procedures to defer difficult political decisions,” the report, entitled“Broken promises and therule of law, said. “Each time this is at the expense of the rights of (prospective) citizens.”
The commission was set up in February 2023 in the wake of the childcare benefit scandal and the chaos surrounding compensating people whose homes were damaged by drilling for gas in Groningen. The nine-member commission included lawyer Eva González Perez who had a central role in uncovering the extent of the childcare benefit scandal, in which thousands of families were accused of fraud and ended up facing financial hardship and ruined lives.
The commission concluded there is a yawning divide between government and its citizens who find themselves in vulnerable positions. In particular, the threshold for resorting to the law has become too high for many because of the lack of investment in state-funded legal aid lawyers, the report said.
In addition, regulations are difficult to understand, procedures too bureaucratic and people who are looking for help are sent from pillar to post, and have to find their way through a maze of officialdom. Instead of finding support from the government, they encounter ‘indifference and reluctance” and have become afraid of the institutions set up to protect them. These findings are not new but do show that recommendations made in previous reports have not led to improvements in the way government works, the commission said. “The rule of law is in a state of neglect.” In concrete terms, the gov-
ernment needs to set up a new agency that should report back to parliament on citizens rights every year. Civil servants need improved awareness and government agencies should be able to issue a “red card” if government policy is impossible to implement. In addition, the rules for income support should be simplified, the commission said.
Costs
In all, the improvements will cost some €1.5 billion, the commission said. It will be up to the next government, a right-wing alliance, to decide whether or not to act on the recommendations.
Last month, the three Dutch ombudsman organisations said existing laws and regulations provide the government with enough room to solve people’s problems yet too often officials introduce even more regulations and complex processes instead.

De ruim 1 miljoen Nederlanders in het buitenland worden onmiddellijk gedupeerd door de plannen van het nieuwe kabinet: sluiting van 34 ambassades maakt de overheid nog slechter bereikbaar, juist ten tijde van een paspoortencrisis waar het verlengen of aanvragen van een paspoort wereldwijd vaak niet (tijdig) mogelijk is. “Dat de Nederlanders buiten Nederland niet eens in het Hoofdlijnenakkoord genoemd werden, was al een teken aan de wand”, licht voorzitter Eelco Keij toe.

Tante Chel, de zus van mijn echte vader
Velp lijkt een verademing met Groningen, maar ik merk al gauw dat sommige dingen er niet beter op worden. Mamma Bruins en ik blijken steeds minder de ideale moeder-dochter combinatie. Inmiddels weet ik dat mijn eigen ouders dood zijn. En dat tante Chel de zus van mijn echte vader is. De enkele keer dat ik bij haar mag logeren, vertelt ze over hem. Hoe geweldig hij was, hoe goed hij kon leren en hoe lief hij was. Ze huilt dan heel hard. Alhoewel ik het erg vind dat ze zo huilt, kan ik het niet goed verdragen als ze zo over hem opschept. Toch kunnen zij en ik het steeds beter met elkaar vinden. Als de kruitdampen tussen de families enigszins zijn opgetrokken, volgt een periode van behoedzame toenadering. Uiteindelijk wordt tante Chel niet alleen mijn lievelingstante, ze zal in mijn latere leven ook een grote stempel drukken op mijn ideeën over mijn familie, vergiffenis en vrijgevigheid. Als ik bij haar (en oom Joop) mocht komen logeren, betekende dat ook weg van mamma Bruins en weg van onze voortdurende ruzies en botsende karakters. Tante Chel komt me altijd ophalen en dan rijden we samen het hele eind naar haar huis in Brussel. Daar verheugde ik me op. De reis was erg gezellig, maar soms ook confronterend. In die tijd stikte het in België langs de kant van de weg van die kappelletjes met kunstbloemen en van die Jezuskruisen. Dan kon tante Chel opeens uitschieten en zei ze dingen als ‘daar hangt die schoft.’ Ik snapte daar niets van en raakte dan erg in de war. Ze zei wel meer dingen waarvan ik niets begreep. Dat als mijn echte vader en moeder nog zouden leven dat ik dan ‘heus wel een broertje of zusje’ zou hebben gekregen. En als ik klaagde over mamma Bruins, dan nam ze me in haar armen. ‘Ach kindje,’ zei ze dan, leefde je eigen pappa en mamma nog maar, die waren zo lief.’
Als ik in Brussel was, werd ik enorm verwend. Ik hoefde maar iets aan te wijzen of ik kreeg het. Dat is altijd zo gebleven. Een keer, ik was toen al getrouwd, was ik lyrisch over haar kristallen glazen schaal met hoge voet, vol met bonbons. Meteen pakte ze het van tafel en zei: ‘Hier kind, pak aan, voor jou. Ik kan het toch niet meenemen in mijn graf.’ Tante Chel zorgde voor de gezelligheid die ik thuis zo miste. Later wilde ik zijn zoals zij en haar savoir-vivre is mij mijn hele leven blijven inspireren. En nog steeds bij ieder diner met familie of vrienden pronkt haar kristallen schaal afgeladen vol met bonbons op tafel. Net als bij haar. Wordt vervolgd
What happened to the second Dutch ship?
The second Dutch ship sailed to the east coast of Australia. They may have anchored at Botany Bay, but certainly visited Balmoral Beach. A VOC coin was dropped and later found by Walter Abbott in 1930. It was passed down to his daughter and solicitor, Kerry MacKenzie whose husband, Alan, showed me the coin.
Balmoral Beach is about eight to nine km north of Sydney. It is the next inlet past the famous Sydney Heads that lead to Sydney Harbour or Port Jackson.
Admiralty maps, argued against sending convicts to New Holland as: ‘other nations could so clearly claim the right to antecedent discovery of the coastline, including the part recently made familiar to the British public as a result of Captain Cook’s voyage.’
The most significant evidence he put forth was the existence of Dutch map by the Dutch geographer, Nicolas Struyck. Dalrymple claimed to have seen a Dutch map that showed the east-coast of Australia before the arrival of Cook.

According to Samuel Bennett, who arrived in Sydney in 1841 where he worked in the printing department of the Sydney Morning Herald, the Dutch arrived before Cook. He claimed that the Dutch fixed a pewter plate with an inscription and date 1705. He asserted that the plate was retrieved by a member of Cook’s crew and handed over to the British museum. It’s possible that the six in the date was misread as a zero.
Other Englishmen had also made the claim of Dutch visitation prior to 1770. Alexander Dalrymple, who was the British hydrographer and had access to all the

Flinders’ response is interesting as he does not dispute that the Dutch might have discovered the east coast before Cook but makes the point that since this discovery was ‘not communicated to the World’ the Dutch should not be given the ‘exclusive right to the First Discoverer.’
This claim of prior Dutch discovery of the east coast was also made by no fewer than five newspapers. This was not just a rumour but a report from the Dutch East India Company in Holland who had claimed ownership of New South Wales and that
an attempt had been made to settle there.
In 1788, Hunter, who was later made governor, wrote: ‘Amongst the strangers was a woman whose skin… was of a bright copper colour.’ In Port Jackson, in February 1788, he reported to have seen, ‘women as light as a mulatto.’ Note that the term ‘mulatto’ is no longer used but it once referred to a person who is born to one black parent and one white parent.

van PVV, VVD, NSC en BBB Nederland is een prachtig land. Een land om trots op te zijn.
Wij moeten hard werken om het vertrouwen van Nederlanders te verdienen. Iedere dag opnieuw. Want vertrouwen is niet vanzelfsprekend.
Politiek en bestuur hebben ondanks goede bedoelingen de afgelopen jaren steken laten vallen, door de zorgen van mensen niet altijd serieus te nemen.
Wij slaan een nieuwe weg in. Met een programkabinet waarin PVV, VVD, NSC en BBB mensen houvast en steun bieden. Een kabinet dat lef toont en trots uitstraalt. Een kabinet dat hoop geeft. Of het nou gaat om bestaanszekerheid, zorg of geld in de portemonnee, of het beschikbaar zijn van voldoende woningen, onze ambitie is groot. We willen ook de veel te hoge instroom van asielzoekers en immigranten keren.
We willen dat boeren, tuinders en vissers weer een toekomst hebben.
We zien een overheid die een baken van betrouwbaarheid is voor alle Nederlanders. Mensen die rechtszekerheid en goed bestuur verdienen. Met veiligheid voor hun gezin in de eigen buurt.
Daarom zetten PVV, VVD, NSC en BBB in dit akkoord deze concrete stappen:
- Lastenverlichting vanaf 2025, gericht op de hardwerkende Nederlanders, jong en oud, zoals de middeninkomens, ondernemers. En ook voor mensen in de knel en hun bestaanszekerheid.
- Het strengste toelatingsregime voor asiel en het omvangrijkste pakket voor grip op migratie ooit.
- Een grote impuls in woning bouw, infrastructuur, bereikbaarheid en energietransitie.
- Meer dan halveren van het eigen risico in de zorg tot het niveau van 165 euro in 2027 en investeren in de ouderenzorg.
- Baas in eigen bedrijf in landbouw en visserij; een impuls voor een toekomst van deze sectoren en voor voedselzekerheid voor ons allemaal.
- Meer zeggenschap van burgers door een ander kiesstelsel en versterking van grondrechten door een constitutioneel hof.
- Nederlanders veilig houden door een stevige aanpak van criminaliteit en terreur. We leven in tijden van grote spanningen, zoals de Russische inval in Oekraïne. De wereldeconomie staat onder druk. Er zijn nieuwe, ernstige bedreigingen voor de veiligheid van onze samenleving en de stabiliteit van de democratische rechtsorde vanuit verschillende statelijke en niet-statelijke actoren.
SNBN reactie op hoofdlijnen rapport
Het nieuwe kabinet kan gevormd worden, nu het hoofdlijnenakkoord rond is, getiteld “Hoop, lef en trots” – met ook de budgettaire bijlage. Wat staat hier in dat voor de Nederlanders buiten Nederand relevant is? Onze eerste bevindingen:
In tegenstelling tot eerdere regeerakkoorden worden wij, Nederlanders buiten Nederland, niet meer expliciet genoemd. Dit is opvallend en zorgelijk tegelijk; of zich dit zal vertalen in het negeren van onze belangen, moet nog worden bezien.
Over dubbele nationaliteit voor Nederlanders buiten Nederland zelf wordt niet gerept; wél wordt expliciet gemeld dat “buitenlanders die onze nationaliteit willen aannemen, waar dat mogelijk is, afstand doen van hun andere nationaliteit” (dit is overigens al bestaande wetgeving) – een teken aan de wand voor wat betreft de denkrichting van het nieuwe kabinet. Bovendien kan dit direct buitenlandse partners van de Nederlanders buiten
Nederland raken, let dus goed op!
Ook op het gebied van naturalisatie zullen nieuwe maatregelen de buitenlandse partner van de Nederlanders buiten Nederland raken, namelijk het verhogen van de taaleis voor naturalisatie naar B1 en de termijn tot mogelijkheid tot naturalisatie naar 10 jaar (nu: 5 jaar).
Een nieuw kiesstelsel: “Een wetsvoorstel tot invoering van een nieuw kiesstelsel voor de Tweede Kamer ter versterking van de regionale band tussen kiezers en gekozenen wordt dit jaar ingediend, gericht op tijdige inwerkingtreding voor de volgende verkiezingen.” Dit zou gevolgen kunnen hebben voor de verkiesbaarheid van Nederlanders buiten Nederland en is een interessant punt om te blijven volgen!
Vergisrecht: “Er komt een recht op vergissen. Een enkele fout kan niet langer een burger diep in de problemen duwen.” Nederlanders buiten Nederland worden vaak en op meerdere dossiers afgerekend op een enkele vergissing, dus dit onderdeel lichten
we er graag even uit.
Evenzeer positief is wat het akkoord stelt over de burger en de relatie tot de (digitale) overheid, cruciaal voor ons in het buitenland: “De bereikbaarheid van overheidsorganisaties voor burgers moet omhoog, onder meer door daadwerkelijke verruiming van de mogelijkheden, tijden en locaties voor contacten in persoon, meer tijdig en adequaat telefonisch contact en grotere beschikbaarheid van hulp bij digitaal contact. Bestaande niet-digitale communicatie door de overheid met burgers wordt gehandhaafd.” Wat de SNBN betreft is de huidige paspoortenpiek een goed voorbeeld dat hieronder geschaard kan worden.
Het afschaffen van de OVvergoeding voor Nederlandse studenten in het buitenland is natuurlijk niet als positief te beschouwen – ook in het buitenland zullen ze het lokale OV gebruiken en daarmee raakt dit hen op een heel direct financiële wijze. Samenvattend – hoewel er positieve punten in staan, ademt dit hoofdlijnenakkoord voor de Nederlanders buiten Nederland (en hun partners) een duidelijk andere geest dan de voorgaande akkoorden. Het akkoord moet nog verder uitgewerkt worden, en naar schatting zal het nog weken duren voordat het kabinet echt rond is. We blijven het volgen en updates sturen.
THE DUTCH EXPLORERS: MAPPING THE WORLD

Cartography or mapmaking has been a part of history for thousands of years. From ancient cave paintings to the clay tablets of the ancient Babylonians; through to the ancient maps of the advanced Greek philosphers and Claudius Ptolemaeus’s “world map”, based on an earth-centred system where the sun, stars and moon rotate around a round ‘flat’ earth. The only civilisation that diverted from
the round, flat earth theory were the Chinese, who believed that the earth was not only flat, but it was square, until the astronomer Zhang Heng (78 – 139 AD) described the earth as the ‘yolk of the universe’ lying in the centre. After the dark ages, the European Mediaeval and Renaissance cartographers created the most artistic and colourful depictions of the earth as they envisaged it. An example is this beautiful depiction by Fra Mauro in the 15th century.
Next to it is a comical portrayal of the flat earth as a disc or sphere and a traveller arriving at the edge of the world poking his head through the firmament by an unknown 19th century engraver, dubbed the Flammarion engraving, because it appeared in a book by Nicolas Flammarion, the French astronomer. It is amazing that the very advanced Chinese held this theory until the 17th century. There is even now the International Flat Earth Society founded by

an Englishman of the name of Samuel Shenton in 1956. It became inactive in 2001, but was resurrected in 2004 by Daniel Shenton. Strange but true! Nevertheless, the practical Dutch were the first to replace the mediaeval fantasy maps with the actual observations of their explorers from the 16th century onwards. The great Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator was the first to use the term “atlas” for a collection of maps. He was the first to invent a way of creating the globe on a flat sheet of paper and he drew the latitudes and longitudes at right angles, instead of curves. His maps enabled explorers to “plot a straight line course and preserve direction much more accurately”.
To digress a little; we are all familiar with the Dutch Lion as the representation of the Netherlands. The Order of the Netherlands Lion founded by William 1, King of the Netherlands was, until recently, used to bestow honours on individuals from all walks of life, military, religious and sec-
ular, who had performed great services to the Netherlands. Now the Order of Orange Nassau has taken its place, but the Order of the Lion is still given to those who perform exceptional services in the arts, literature and sport and the order of the Lion is never given to foreigners, who can only be awarded the Order of the Crown or Orange Nassau. On a more flippant note everyone knows about Loeki de Leeuw (Loeki the Lion) the cartoon character on Dutch television.
However I wonder if you knew that the Lion of the Netherlands was first used on a map in 1513 by Michael Eytzinger to portray the Netherlands with its then 17 provinces, as most of them used a lion in their coats of armour. When the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648 the lion was used to represent the new nation with its, now, seven united provinces and official recognition of their independence.
A school of mapmakers and printers flourished in Holland to try and keep pace with
the rapid expansion of the Dutch empire and the VOC’s conquests. Even though the Italian, Galileo Galilei and the Englishman, Isaac Newton made improvements on the telescope, it was first developed by a Dutch optician named Hans Lippershey. This enabled ready communication with other ships at sea and recognising enemy flags and could even spot “rippling water or waves that signalled danger” and eventually the development of full and accurate navigation which was then charted and recorded by the skilled Dutch mapmakers. Dutch explorers were instructed to report all observations in great detail. Hence, the countless ships sent out by the VOC in the seventeenth century with explorers such as Janszoon, Hartog, Houtman, Tasman, Carstenz, Thijssen, Nuyts to name just a few; enabled the printing houses of Holland to produce constantly revised maps of the Great

World War 2 through the eyes of a 9 Year old
The son of our neighbour, Peter van der Grient, was picked up by the Germans and taken to a concentration camp in Germany. The father, was very quick with bringing over a big book which was in a picture frame. Whilst the Germans were busy searching his house, he walked out of the back of his house and walked across and straight into the back of our house. I have no idea what exactly was in it but it must have been important.
The next day the ‘Green Polizei’ arrived at our house and they were searching. My mother was not at home and my sister and I went outside to wait for her. When she came home, she told us quite sternly: “Don’t worry about it, don’t say anything, don’t do anything, just let them get on with their job”. That is what we did, although we had no choice because they were already inside. What happened to some other neighbours who stayed watching whilst their house was being searched is that the Green Polizei would even cut open the mattresses to try and find things. They probably thought these people have something to hide. So, this was a very wise decision of my mother.
The Neighbourhood Siren went off to warn of planes coming, which happened quite often. Even when the planes came over the Sirens kept going off. Afterwards when the danger was over the Siren went again to signal that the danger had passed. One day I asked my mother if I could go for a swim in the Canal. She said that it was alright to go. I tried to pick up a girl friend to come with me and she asked, did your mother allow you to go? Yes, I asked permission so then it was okay for her to come along. We went for a swim in the Beatrix Canal and the next day a bomb was found in there, thank goodness it did not explode. Those things happened.
I found the night time was the worst part as the English planes would come over. The searchlights (of the Germans) on top of the Philips factory would try and get them in their light circle. When they were in the searchlight, the planes could not get out of it and they were shot down. There was a problem when that happened, in 1943 this happened a lot because they (the English allies) were bombing Aachen (a city just across the border in Germany). Germany was bombed a lot by the English. When the Siren went, we had to get up and go into the cellar under the house. I hated having to get out of bed. My small brother was very scared and he would call out “come on” and we would go down to the cellar which also had a small window that looked out at street level. If something would happen, we could get out of the cellar to escape. I hated it, we just had to sit there and it was cold. My brother would shout “Our Leni has to come too, our Leni has to come too”. I hated that voice of his, I really hated it because I would have liked to stay in \
bed. I think that was not very nice. One day we were playing with a ball. We would throw the ball up in the air and when someone caught it that person would be ‘Out’. Our street, the Sophia Street and also the Pruisen Road, were quite wide streets. The (English) planes were flying overhead but very low over our street, they were so low that they had to climb up to get over the upended railway barriers at the end of the road. In the meantime, whilst we were playing with the balls, we thought that the planes were throwing out balloons and then there was the yelling of “lie down” and again “lie down”. As kids we would not lie down, but ran to the first house we could find. I have never forgotten, that ‘eerie’ sound whilst the bombs were going off and coming down.
At the same time people were praying the Rosary whilst the bombs were coming down. I heard later that my little brother had been crying “Leni is not home, Leni is not home”. My sister told me afterwards that father was very upset too that I was not at home. That bombardment was very upsetting because the houses of the Willem Street were flattened. The dog of one of the neighbours across the street came home with blood on him but his owner was not with him (he must have got hit and died). That was very upsetting.
We also had vegetables in our garden, no flowers of course. Only room for vegetables. My father had also hired a small plot. There were only vegetables also, as children we had to help there too. One day we wanted to go swimming but I had to go to the plot first. I had to get the last picking of the peas, my friends helped me to get the job done. Only when that was done could we go swimming. We went to the ‘IJzeren Man’ (‘The Iron Man’) a swimming pool which was a long way away. This pool was also half taken over by the German soldiers and half was for us. Our part was halved again because the boys and the girls were not allowed to swim together in those days.
By that time the coal had run out and we had a small wood stove in our Lounge. It is hard to explain what that stove looked like. It could only burn wood. We, as kids, would try and find wood for it in the forest. One night my father with some other men were going out to cut wood. They had to do this in secret of course and could not be seen doing this as they would get in trouble. When the men had gone out, somebody broke in through our front door. It was really easy to get inside a house in those days as the front doors had a small window which was unlocked and one could put one’s hand through and pull a rope to open the door lock.
In the entrance hall was usually a long wooden coat rack with lots of hooks and all the family used to hang their coats and jackets and even our little bags were there. Everybody was busy or were inside the house so these burglars were not noticed. That was bad, it was even that bad that my Mum did not have a coat to wear. That Sunday in Church it was asked whether there was someone in the Congregation who had a coat for my mother. She was given a very nice coat by somebody. When the men came back with the wood, we had warmth for a long time afterwards, which was a good thing. The Christmas that year was very nice. We were given some Mandarins by the Red Cross. We did not know
what Mandarins were. Lemons and Mandarins and all warm climate fruits do not grow in the Netherlands. That special kind of food was no longer available in our country, there was no tea, no coffee, no pepper. Nothing, even no tobacco.
The things that did grow in the Netherlands were scarce too. The result was, that we did not get enough vitamins. If we had scratches or sores, they would get infected. In my case I had 40 boils, big ones, on my bottom, so I could not sit because of the pain. The tips of these were burned off. The Head of the Clinic stopped this treatment and instead I was given a Sun Lamp treatment. There was also a lot of Tuberculosis going around, due to the shortage of food the people had less resistance, which did not help. But there were no stomach problems, as people did not have the fatty foods and no sugar to cause these problems.
The Liberation; the Landing in Normandy was on the 6th of June, 1944. That was a big thing and everybody was thinking ‘the war will be over very soon now’. The Germans stopped the Freedom Fighters (English and Canadians, they were the Allied forces) at the Albert Canal in Belgium, it took a long time before they could get to us. On the 6th or 7th of September we could see parachutes coming down at the end of our street. Not only soldiers were coming down, but also Jeeps and Tanks. The troops came through our city, which happened on the 18th of September 1944. We all went to the city to welcome the soldiers, happy and waving. Everybody went to the ‘Demer’, (important main shopping street in our city). Something else came past us, I think it is called an Ordinance (a person who gives orders or directions) on a motorbike, but he went in the opposite direction. In no time at all the Tanks were gone and we were told to go home. Go home! Go home! That is what we did and when we came to the corner of the Wilhelmina Plein there were soldiers lying on the corners of the street, ready to fight. There were tripods with machineguns on them. We went to our house and went straight into the cellar.
Then the Germans bombed us, they were not targeting a goal but they just destroyed different parts of Eindhoven. They basically bombed all of Eindhoven, it made no difference where the bombs fell. It was not easy for us we were all just sitting in the cellar, we did not know what was happening. In the morning my father told us to stay in the cellar and he would go outside and inquire whether we were liberated or were back under the Germans. We were still Free.
My Aunt, who lives near The Hague, which was still under the Germans, heard on the radio that the Germans announced that Eindhoven was bombed and was in ruins, this was on the 19th of September.
Freedom; although there was no food yet, it even got worse for a while, we had no rations or anything left. In our street and in the next street The Pruisen Weg (road) and also the Lodewijk Plein (square), there was a Work Shop. That was very interesting because our streets were so wide that the army trucks could park on both sides on the footpath and in the middle of the street. Tanks and all kinds of different machinery were there to be repaired.

We are very excited to see that Koalas have arrived in the Netherlands and we are sure that they are settling into their new home at Ouwehands Zoo comfortably following a smooth flight with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines from San Diego to Schiphol.
The consulate-general in Sydney was very happy to receive both Ouwehands director Robin de Lange and Geer Scheres to discuss the ongoing need for conservation efforts in order to safeguard the beloved population of Koalas in Australia.
Conservation efforts such as these at Ouwehands Zoo are crucial for maintaining a healthy and diverse gene pool for Koalas and we hope that this will one day see Koalas no longer listed as ‘vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red list.

The Netherlands is the world’s number one cycling country and has the highest bicycle use. Many Dutchies basically grew up on a bike and love cycling, yet very few cycle the world.
On January 2023 the Dutch cyclist Koen Sachse set off from Amsterdam, the bicycle capital city of the world, to circumnavigate the globe by bike, crossing 30+ countries and four continents, whilst raising money for charity.
Together with the Sunday Foundation (hence the name of the project ‘The Sunday Ride) he hopes to build a school in Sierra Leone. After more than 23.000 kilometers, we look forward to welcoming him in Sydney this week.

Happy World Bicycle Day from the ConsulateGeneral of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sydney!
In the Netherlands, cycling is more than just a mode of transport – it’s a way of life! In the Netherlands, people cycle 18.2 billion km annually, av-
eraging 3 km per person per day, and over a quarter of all trips are made by bike.
However, thanks to Lucas Harms and the Dutch Cycling Embassy for bringing their screening of ‘Together We Cycle’ to Australia, we have learnt that this was not always the case. Dutch cyclists in the 1960s and 1970s had to actively campaign for the infrastructure they enjoy, just like many are doing around the world today.
Following the screening of ‘Together We Cycle’, we were also lucky enough to hear a discussion between Lucas and Kobi Shetty MP about their experiences cycling and advocating for active mobility. It was inspirational to hear about the concerted efforts being undertaken to increase the access of cycling in Sydney.
Finally, to top off last week the Consul-general Hugo Klijn, Deputy consul-general Meike de Jong, Kobi Shetty MP, and Lucas were taken for a short bike tour of Sydney CBD by Fiona Campbell from the City of Sydney where they were able to see all the work that had been done to improve cycle access in the CBD.

On Sunday, 28 April, the Dutch Club in Richlands,Qld (officially NAQ), celebrated King’s Day. Prins Willem Alexander Village was represented with six people, and we all had a ball.
As usual, there were poffertjes, oliebollen, rookworst, patat (chips), ‘broodje haring’ and more. We all enjoyed the snacks of our choice and had a coffee from the bar or from the special coffee stand, which offered cappuccino, etc. There was also an icecream stand with fresh fruit in the ice cream. Very yummy.
The day was very well attended, and the weather was good, so we could sit inside or outside. The shop was also open and I stocked up on some of my favourites. It was a great day.

On 27 April the independent residents of the PWA village in Birkdale, Qld, celebrated Kings Day with a lovely lunch.
Most of us came dressed in orange, often including headwear, and the Soos was decorated in appropriate orange too.
We enjoyed lots of delicious foods, sandwiches, many typical Dutch sweets, and orange Tom Poes pastries (vanilla slices). The ambiance was great and we sang many good old Dutch songs. I already look forward to a repeat next year.!

“Jonge, wat moet je ermee? Niemand wil die oude rommel toch nog hebben? Kranten, boeken, posters, programma boekjes, medailles, kleding, tickets en weet ik wat niet meer. Gooi weg joh. En je blijft al die Olympische spullen maar bewaren in mijn garage. Je kijkt er nooit naar!”
Zie hier de motiverende woorden van mijn moeder over de afgelopen 10 jaar. Sinds de dag dat ik haar garage mocht gebruiken als opslag, en ze er al snel achter kwam dat de Olympische verzameling veel meer was dat ze had verwacht. Sindsdien zag ze mijn Olympische verzameling als rommel. Het was dan ook direct duidelijk dat deze niet op de juiste waarde werd geschat.
“Wie wil er nou nog iets betalen voor die oude kranten? Je bent hartstikke gek dat je ze bewaard!”
Mijn Olympische vrienden denken er anders over. Het volgende gebeurde in 2004; “Ben je thuis?” Vraagt een vriend via de telefoon. “ Ik ben voor mijn werk in Rotterdam omdat wij in Groningen het kantoor aan het verbouwen zijn, en ik wilde even langs komen.” Altijd leuk als vrienden bellen. Ik antwoord positief en zeg dat ik koffie zal klaar zetten. “Nou ik heb eigenlijk weinig tijd, maar ik wilde vooral eventjes je woonkamermuur weer eens bekijken. Heb je nog nieuwe Olympische spullen gekocht, de laatste tijd?” Ook dit wordt positief beantwoordt. Bij binnenkomst krijg ik van de vriend nog wel een hand, maar hij loopt direct naar mijn woonkamer waar 2 wanden helemaal vol hangen met Olympische spelen. Aandachtig bekijkt hij de spullen die er hangen of liggen. Mooie herinneringen komen er terug bij het zien van foto’s. We praten wat over toen en de Olympische vriend zegt dat het altijd zo prettig is om hier te zijn. Tevens komt er spijt van het feit dat hij al zijn Olympische

We begonnen de maand met leuk sportnieuws: Adelaide United en PSV gaan samenwerken. Niet alleen op technisch gebied, ook op organisatorisch vlak zullen de voetbalclubs kennis uitwisselen. Wij spraken met Adelaide United FC voorzitter Ned Morris.
Amerika/Mexico zijn niet langer in de race voor de organisatie van het WK vrouwenvoetbal 2027. Dit is goed nieuws voor het trio Nederland, België en Duitsland, want die hebben nu alleen nog Brazillië over als concurrent. Hoe schat sportjournalist Jaap de Groot ‘onze’ kans in?
Traditiegetrouw volgen wij bij SBS Dutch het Eurovisie Songfestival op de voet. Dit jaar nam het evenement voor Nederland een dramatische wending: de Nederlandse deelnemer Joost Klein werd gediskwalificeerd en mocht niet meedoen aan de finale. Songfestivalkenner Tim Dekkers hield ons op de hoogte.
Wat is dat toch met Nederlanders en schaatsen?
Schaatsfanaat Dr. Jan Over kwam op visite in onze studio en vertelde over zijn schaatsherinneringen als kind en zijn drie deelnames aan de Elfstedentocht. Samen droomden we hardop over de mogelijkheid van een nieuwe editie van de toch der tochten.

Sachse aan zijn fietsrondje om de wereld. Afgelopen maand had hij 28 landen op 3 continenten doorkruist en stond er ruim 22.000 km op zijn teller. Tijdens zijn etappe door Australië, van Cairns naar Sydney, gaf hij een presentatie voor Dutchlink Sydney. Wij waren er bij en spraken met Koen.
Sportjournalist Jaap de Groot praatte ons bij over het vele voetbalnieuws uit Nederland. Zo koos bondscoach Ronald Koeman zijn voorlopige Oranje selectie voor het EK voetbal in Duitsland en werd bekend dat het WK vrouwenvoetbal van 2027 aan de neus van Nederland, België en Duitsland voorbij gaat.

kaartjes nooit heeft bewaard. “Ik had ze graag van je gekocht!” Zei ik met een glimlach, maar daar ging het niet om. “Jouw verzameling heeft vooral een prachtige emotionele waarde die financieel onbetaalbaar is. Dank dat ik weer eventjes binnen mocht komen.” “Echt geen koffie?” Maar hij moest weer gauw door. Alles bij elkaar was de Olympische vriend slechts 20 minuten binnen. Het gaat dus om de prachtige emotionele waarde en de prettige herinneringen en niet om het geld.
Vandaar dat de Olympische spullen niet weg werden gedaan door mij, maar ik regelmatig in de garage stond om weer eventjes wat op te zoeken en zo weer een Olympische herinnering te beleven. Prachtige tijd. Wie kan nou zeggen dat die Ellen van Langen goud heeft zien winnen in Barcelona 1992. Of Pieter en Inge heeft zien schitteren in Sydney en Athene? Of Irene en Sven op het ijs. Of de hockeyers….. ik zal stoppen voordat het wat overdreven over zal komen.

Wist u dat het eerste bezoek van Maori aan Australië plaatsvond in mei 1793? Historica Ingeborg van Teeseling vertelde hoe gouverneur Philip Gidley King bezoek kreeg van een groep walvisvaarders die hem in ruil voor geld twee Maori-leiders aanbood.
In mei werden de politieke partijen PVV, VVD, NSC en BBB het eens over een Hoofdlijnenakkoord. Wij belden met journalist en oudSBS Dutch collega Frans Warffemius om te horen hoe de Tweede Kamer over dat akkoord denkt.
Ruim 20 jaar werkte Reinier in de tv- en filmindustrie, maar sinds het overlijden van zijn vader voelde hij een gemis. Brood bleek het medicijn. Begin mei opende hij, als vierde generatie bakker, zijn eigen bakkerij in Camberwell (VIC) waar hij ook echte Hollandse krentenbollen verkoopt! Wij spraken hem over dit nieuwe avontuur.

Mijn moeder is een aantal dagen weg en dat zorgt ervoor dat ik de garage aan het opruimen ben en zo mijn Olympische verzameling wat kan uitzoeken en sorteren, zonder dat er gezeur komt. Spullen worden uit de garage in de woonkamer gezet waar ik op mijn gemak door de Olympische verzameling heen kan gaan, en deze ook kan laten liggen om de volgende dag weer direct verder te kunnen gaan.
Ik heb zojuist alle Olympische kaartjes uitgesorteerd en dat was al een hele klus. Straks nog de Olympische pins, kleding en kranten uitzoeken. Dat gaat nooit lukken voordat mijn moeder weer terug is. Momenteel is het tijd voor een paar boterhammen en deze wordt met een glas melk erbij, opgegeten bij de Olympische tickets. Ik zit op de grond en bekijk op het gemak de vele Olympische tickets. O nee, o nee! Daar gebeurt het weer!!! Mooie Olympische herinneringen komen er weer aan.
En dan zijn er mensen die zoiets moois willen weggooien! Eeuwig zonde zou dat zijn. Toch?
Association. Sinds vorige maand is er een speciale pop-up tentoonstelling over het kamp in het MacArthur Museum in Brisbane. Paul Budde vertelde namens de Camp Columbia Heritage Association over de opening, waar ook de Nederlandse ambassadeur bij aanwezig was.
Paul Budde deelde ook ander mooi nieuws in onze uitzending: zes Dutch Houses in Brisbane zijn genomineerd voor erfgoedbescherming.
The Dutch Australian Cultural Centre bracht een aantal jaar geleden de geschiedenis van deze huizen onder de aandacht en nu heeft de lokale geschiedenisgroep een verzoek ingediend om de huizen een beschermde status te geven.

Tattoo back story
I found some pics of my son with the aircraft before he left with them to fly to pick up another pilot and to also pick up a paratrooper that was going on an honor flight to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the landings.
I believe he actually jumped again in his 90’s! Greatest Generation! My father was born in a small town called Soest.
Our family was heavily involved in the resistance and There is a street named after “Christina Smoorenburg” somewhere out there. We lost several relatives at the hands of the NAZI’s.
So the tattoo is paying homage to our families history and my fathers roots in Holland and his journey to hunt for the “American Dream” He got here in 59 and he DID achieve his goal in Texas!. Sadly he passed in 09. I enjoyed hearing his stories about being a little kid growing up in that horrible situation. The Parachute between the flags represents the “Screaming Eagles” that dropped in and liberated our people! The aircraft was the lead paratroop plane on June 7 and it continued on dropping the Eagles(Band of Brothers) all over Holland... Jake(my son) was

He submitted his documentary to the Teen Indie Film association and was chsen to show his Film in New York at the Times Square AMC Theater. The whole situation hits me hard being that my son got to fly in the actual aircraft that was directly related to liberating his grandfather.

IN NEDERLAND
Als ik vanuit Australie het nieuws in Nederland volg, dan ben ik verbaasd, teleurgesteld en verwonderd. (1) De politieke gebeurtenissen rondom het gaan realiseren van een nieuw kabinet, zorgen al geruime tijd voor negatieve energie bij veel mensen. Veranderingen in een proces geeft nu eenmaal verandering in emoties waarbij het gaan aanpassen en accepteren van iets anders nogal lastig blijkt te zijn. (2) Ook volop aandacht in de media voor dit. Volwassen mensen die elkaar via een landelijke krant excuses aanbieden omdat dit blijkbaar verlangd wordt van
de ander (een partijleider in de politiek) en omdat het een eigen belang heeft om mogelijk de belangrijkste man van het land te worden, namelijk minister president. Wat een vreemde manier van solliciteren!
3. Ook volop aandacht in de media voor dit. De zogenaamde demonstraties op de Nederlandse universiteiten door studenten, waar de realiteit is dat het vaak vooral niet studenten zijn die het hardst schreeuwen en eisen stellen. Hierdoor loopt het vooral uit op rellen en er vinden zo vervelende gebeurtenissen plaats tegen de politie. Veel huilie huilie als demonstranten niet luisteren naar de politie op de verschillende verzoeken om te vertrekken, maar wel willen aantonen of zelfs eisen, dat ze respect verlangen en er onterecht geweld tegen hun wordt gebruikt. Waarom eisen demonstranten van universiteiten eigenlijk verschillende lijsten?
Het is telkens weer een soort strijd van wij tegen zij. De houding van “Ik wil dat niet” is prioriteit, maar het beginnen te luisteren en proberen te begrijpen van een ander gebeurd nauwelijks nog, laat staan het vinden van oplossingen. Wat is er mis gegaan?
Dat er duidelijkheid moet komen met nieuwe regels heeft
nu eenmaal consequenties. De grenzen dicht? Harder straffen van tuig? De taak van de gekozen volksvertegenwoordigers om hierover beslissingen te gaan nemen. En gaat het nu echt zo slecht als in de diverse talkshows op TV steeds maar weer wordt beweerd? Is dit de aandacht die men geeft via de media?
Het maakt me steeds weer een beetje verdrietig vanaf de andere kant van de wereld als ik aan Nederland denkt.
VANUIT AUSTRALIE
Vanmorgen mijn dochter naar school gebracht en onderweg hadden we samen lol om… eigenlijk niets. Gewoon lachen en een beetje raar praten zoals je dat doet met een 6 jarige. Ik kijk altijd weer uit naar deze 10 minuten wandeling, ook al verschillen ze telkens weer. Nadat ik nog een dikke knuffel kreeg bij het klaslokaal en ik de juf gedag had gezegd kwam ik terecht in de supermarkt waar een brood en melk werd gekocht. Betalen gebeurd tegenwoordig al jaren bij de scankassa en moet je dus zelf doen, maar toch maak ik vaak een praatje met een van de supermarkt medewerkers die bij deze scankassa’s staan te controleren. Het begon allemaal met een kort oproepje in de facebook pagina “Nederlanders in Australie” Een 70 jarige vrouw wil graag een andere Nederlander ontmoeten. Aangezien mijn vriendinnen tegenwoordig ook via speeddating evenementen aan de man komen dacht ik. natuurlijk kunnen we dat als Dutch Courier ook opzetten en daarmee helpen. op een landelijke krant in Australie? Prachtig! Zou zoiets in Nederland ook kunnen? Wordt Nederland bij het wakker worden straks verrast met “100 dagen tot de Paralympische Spelen in Parijs” aandacht? Ik heb mijn twijfels als ik zie waar de aandacht vooral ligt. Hoe dan ook het geeft mij een prettig gevoel dat er in Australië gemeende aandacht is in de media voor de komende Paralympische spelen in

It stands to reason that some of these numerous maps printed by the Dutch publishing and printing houses would fall into the hands of a young English Lieutenant named James Cook, who only had to travel along routes earlier discovered by the Dutch and “Bingo!” he found the east coast of New Holland. He always insisted, in his log, that, “on the western side I can make no new discoveries, the honour of which belongs to the Dutch navigators” He never claimed to have found the whole continent of Australia, as the 19th century English would have us believe. Cook was actually looking for another great South Land apart from New Holland. He was disappointed at just finding an east coast of what had already been discovered. Mijn zoon Antonie vroeg me of ik nog ging schrijven over Joost Klein in de Dutch Courier. Eigenlijk wilde ik net als Joost Klein even onder de radar verdwijnen en niet meedoen aan deze discussie.
Wegduiken omdat het allemaal zo overdreven voelt en ik het gevoel heb dat ik een mening moet hebben. Heel Nederland is namelijk in rep en roer en vindt het belachelijk dat het songfestival hem heeft geannuleerd vanwege zijn rapnummer dat veel lijkt op een nummer uit de jaren 90. Ik ben het eigenlijk wel

eens met de organisatie; het gaat toch ook om veilig werken op de werkvloer? En het gaat ook over een vrouw die wordt bedreigd?
Ook geloof ik niet dat een organisatie iemand voor het eerst annuleert als er maar één incident heeft plaatsgevonden. Zelf ben ik evenementenorganisator geweest en je wilt niets liever dan een eerlijke competitie, en het laatste wat je zou willen is dat iemand gediskwalificeerd wordt.
Maar goed, nu ga ik zelf ook speculeren, en een politieon-
derzoek is nog gaande.
Net als iedereen zal het wel menselijk zijn dat dat gebeurt.
Het lied is nu meer dan een miljoen keer gestreamd en staat in elk land minimaal in de top 5.
Zo zie je maar, negatieve publiciteit is ook publiciteit. Dat heeft mijn marketingleraar ook altijd gezegd.
Dit gebeuren lijkt Nederland ook een beetje te verbroederen. Als Nederlander in het buitenland voel ik me een beetje
buitenstaander. Waarschijnlijk heb ik ook de opkomst van de Joost Klein-hype gemist.
Als ik zo door sociale media blader, heeft Joost op 10-jarige leeftijd beide ouders verloren en zag hij het songfestival echt als een overwinning om daaraan mee te doen.
Misschien heeft de empathische Nederlander een zwak voor Joost, de underdog, gekregen en staan ze daarom zo achter hem. Het is interessant, want toen Marco Borsato en anderen op tv werden geannuleerd, vond iedereen dat terecht.
Is Nederland dat misschien opeens zat?
Mijn hart brak helemaal toen ik zag dat de klokken van Leiden zijn liedje uit solidariteit gingen spelen. Mijn geliefde Leiden, in de bres voor Joost Klein.
Het blijft interessant om dingen van een afstand te bekijken.

It was the first ‘English Work Shop’ past the War Zone, that was very interesting for us children to watch. The work shop was interesting because on the back of each of the trucks there was a different kind of trade, for instance, one would repair shoes, the other one would repair clocks and instruments, and the next one motors and machinery. We had noticed that we could jump up on the Jeeps and on the side was a small button, if you pressed that a Siren would go off. This would cause a big panic everywhere because the Siren meant Danger. It only happened once because after it was noticed that we kids were doing it, the soldiers were prepared and stopped us.
What was also nice for us was that it quite often happened that one of the soldiers went for lunch or for dinner, and they would take one of the children with them and then they would only eat half of their meal and we were allowed to eat the rest. For us that was really special, like a big party. It only lasted about three weeks and then they were better organised and
had a big tent (for a workshop) and we could not get in any more.
In the meantime, we had discovered Cannon shells which were one meter in length, lying in a stack, which also was about one meter high. We children liked to jump up on the stack and walk on them. The shells would start to roll away and that was great fun.
One day the soldiers were cleaning out Jerry Cans, which were just in a big heap with a fire underneath to dry them. This was at the end of the street. I was being naughty and went there, I found a Jerry Can lying around, put the lid on and closed it up and threw it on the fire. The noise was incredible when it exploded.
What we also did as children when one of the trucks arrived back for repairs, we dived into it and tried to find food. Occasionally something would be left in there. There were big tanks also, we could get inside and turn the hatch to open it. It was interesting to us because you could look down into a kind of pipe and could see the road in front of us. This was whilst we were playing inside of the tank of course. We could make the turret on top turn around too. One day in the tank I pressed on a button and I caused a smoke curtain to hang over Eindhoven.
A couple of years later my mother was telling visitors how naughty the kids had been when the workshop was there and told the story about this smoke curtain and my brother then said “Leni it is about time you own up to it”. Mother’s reaction was “don’t tell me that you have done this Leni”.
To us it was all play of course.
We also found small bullets, put them in the fence and with a knife and a brick, we could shoot that bullet. Some other kids would throw them in a fire and the bullets would explode. This game was very dangerous. Some children got hurt and one child lost his thumb.
In the meantime, the troops were held up before the bridge of the city of Arnhem about 120 km to the north. There is a book about it, and a film called: ‘A Bridge to far’. The English soldiers could not go to Germany from our side because the German soldiers were still in control and stopped them from crossing the river Maas. The corner around the river Maas was still dangerous. A town called ‘Best’ only 10 km away from Eindhoven was still occupied by the Germans. Eindhoven was liberated on the 18th of September and Best was only finally freed on the 8th of February the next year for the last time, as the fighting had continued all this time. You can imagine how close the war was to us, we could hear from a distance how the cannons were going off.
It remained interesting for us children as the Allied soldiers who came back from the fighting were given some time off. The soldiers used to get together on the Wilhelmina Plein, from where they would walk to the cinema to see a picture. We went there to ask them for chocolates for Mama and for cigarettes for Papa. One soldier was just sitting on the square and I invited him to our house. He came along and after that he used to come quite often.
He told us his story that he did not want to shoot at peo-
ple. We asked him what he had been doing instead, he told us that when they had to go across the Albert canal, he would push the boat whilst the other soldiers would do the fighting. He also did not go to the pictures, but I don’t know why not. Everybody was welcome at our house and we would invite the soldiers to come with us. On St Nicolaas evening (on the 5th of December), my mother had saved up sugar for a while and she made us ‘Borstplaat’ (a sweet treat for children made with melted sugar and flavouring often shaped like small hearts). That evening we shared this with the Canadian soldiers. On the day after St. Nicolaas, we received a big parcel and in the parcel was a small present for myself, for my sister and our brother, and cigarettes for Dad and chocolates and some other things as well. That was so nice.
Not long after the 16th December, the Germans tried to take Eindhoven again and their tank brigade was advancing in the direction of Eindhoven. A farmer stopped them and told them to go a different way because the bridge was gone. My father got himself ready to go. He said that if the Germans would come back, he would have to go with the Allieds, as it was now known that he had worked for the Resistance.
I am not sure when we started school again. I think it was about March. The Queen [Wilhelmina, ed] came to visit Eindhoven, on the 19th of March 1945. The whole neighbourhood got together to greet the Queen. I was telling everybody, as I was so proud of it, that my father was inside the ‘Van Abbemuseum’ and he was getting introduced to the Queen. Why that happened? I have no idea.
On the 5th of May 1945, it was announced on the radio that Germany had capitulated and the whole country was Free. That was so nice as there were parties on every street corner. These Freedom Celebrations went on for some weeks.

Sinds ik in de wereld van ADHD ben gedoken, begin ik steeds meer van mijzelf te begrijpen. Dat betekent niet dat ik alles maar accepteer of wegwuif, maar ik snap beter waar het vandaan komt. Het maakt het bijkomende verdriet overigens niet minder.
Zo is er zoiets als: Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), ook wel bekend als afwijzingsgevoelige dysforie. Dat houdt in dat je extreem gevoelig bent voor afwijzingen of kritiek. Dit raakt natuurlijk wel een snaartje bij mij, dus keek ik verder naar de kenmerken. Ik som er wat op, die op mij van toepassing zijn. Bij voorbaat excuus!
Extreem perfectionisme: Je bent nooit tevreden over je eigen prestaties.
Continu zoeken naar goedkeuring: Je hebt voortdurend behoefte aan bevestiging van anderen.
Negatief zelfbeeld: Je hebt een laag zelfbeeld en voelt je vaak schuldig.
Vermijden van taken: Je vermijdt soms dingen die je eigenlijk zou moeten doen, uit angst voor afwijzing.
Gespannenheid: Je kunt erg gespannen zijn, wat zich kan uiten in hoofdpijn of buikpijn.
Iedereen lijkt een hekel aan je te hebben: Je denkt dat anderen negatief over je denken, zelfs als dat niet zo is.
Overmatig excuses aanbieden: Je zegt de hele dag door sorry, zelfs als het niet nodig is.
O kak, sorry!
Het vervelende aan dat soort lijstjes is natuurlijk dat mensen in je omgeving hierop reageren met: “Dat heb ik ook.”
“Dat is niet typisch ADHD hoor!” En meer van dat soort ‘expert-meningen.’ Maar het klopt ook wel. De link tussen RSD en ADHD ligt in het feit dat mensen met ADHD vaak meer kritiek krijgen dan neurotypische individuen. Dit komt door kenmerken zoals moeite hebben met emotieregulatie en executieve disfunctie. Mocht je, omdat je het ook bij jezelf herkent, dit heel normaal vinden; vraag jezelf dan af hoe neurotypisch je eigenlijk bent! Of wellicht heb je in je leven al heel veel afwijzingen ervaren.
Dat is dan best verdrietig. Afwijzingen zijn aan de orde van de dag. En het hoort ook bij het leven. Omgaan met frustratie is een deel van je ontwikkeling. Ook jonge kinderen ervaren dat. Iedere keer dat ze niet mogen meespelen, niet mee de klassen rond mogen, niet op een partijtje worden uitgenodigd. Van frustreren kun je leren, zeggen we dan. En curling-ouders, die het pad van hun kinderen maar glad blijven vegen, dat is ook niet gezond. Alleen is er toch een verschil. Een schaal van vervelend, naar erg. Want moedwillig iemand buitensluiten is anders dan niet altijd gekozen worden. Of dat nu als kind is, of als volwassene.
Wist je dat intuïtie en een groot rechtvaardigheidsgevoel ook bij ADHD hoort? En als afwijzing gebeurt op basis van leugens en zwartmakerij door mensen waar je (door je sterke intuïtie) afstand van hebt genomen, overstemt het rechtvaardigheidsgevoel iedere gedachte. Waarmee we gelijk ook het kenmerk hyperfocus boven tafel hebben. Want laat die gedachtes maar eens los. Dat is niet te doen. Mijn rechtvaardigheidsgevoel is huizenhoog. Ik nam ooit ontslag van mijn vorige school, omdat mijn

Mijn kind mocht niet meer terug naar kleuterdans, omdat ze te enthousiast was. Mijn pen werd vlijmscherp. Loste het iets op? Natuurlijk niet. Maar zou ik het weer doen? Zonder twijfel. Als ik zie dat zaken voor mijn collega’s niet kloppen op mijn werk, dan zet ik alles op alles om te zorgen dat het wel eerlijk gaat. Af en toe ben ik zo gefrustreerd, dat de tranen uit mijn kop knallen en ik mijzelf in de aura’s en migraine duw. Maar kan ik dat stoppen? Nooit! Want het gaat niet om mijn belang. Eigenlijk gaat het nooit om

En daar zit de grootste pijn…
Want, omdat ik altijd de kant van rechtvaardigheid zal kiezen, altijd de kant van de ander, altijd voor het groepsbelang, denk ik, of nee, verwacht ik dat anderen dat ook doen. Als jij onaardig of onrechtvaardig bent naar iemand om wie ik geef, dan wil ik ook niks met jou te maken hebben. Want dat zegt iets over wie jij bent.
Alleen, dat doen anderen niet voor mij. Of althans, bijna niemand doet dat. Ze dansen doodleuk op je graf, terwijl ze onderwijl zeggen hoe vervelend ze het voor je vinden. Dat is impliciete afwijzing. En dat maakt de cirkel weer rond. Hallo, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria!
Afwijzing tolt rondjes in je hoofd, en klemt je keel dicht. Ik snap de pijn wel hoor, van mijn leerlingen die niet mee mogen doen. En dat ze daar pijn van in hun buik krijgen. Want ook al zegt het niks over henzelf, en vooral wat over de ander, dan is dat zelfs als volwassene moeilijk te accepteren.

Als je halverwege de zestig bent dan kan het niet anders dan dat je om je heen leeftijdgenoten met pensioen ziet gaan. Vaak wordt er op het afscheidsfeest gevraagd: “Wat ga je nu doen?” Wat zouden ze zelf denken? Met een bromtol spelen? In de dakgoot naar de vogels zitten fluiten? Samba’s dansen? Ik suggereer wel eens dat de aanstaande pensionado nu ein-de-lijk een poes aan gaat schaffen. Vaak wordt er dan gezegd dat het niet kan omdat ze zo vaak weg zijn, en dan komen de verhalen van omstanders los. Een lieve buurvrouw zou toch best voor de poes kunnen zorgen? De poes van de ene persoon wist het al zo gauw de familie in ging pakken, dan sprong ze bij de buurvrouw voor het keukenraam. De andere persoon wist te vertellen dat de kat des huizes altijd boos was wanneer ze van vakantie terug kwamen. Hoe durven jullie mij in de steek te laten!!! Dit laatste verhaal zou ik ook kunnen vertellen, en kampioen booskijker is toch wel onze zwarte kater Kees geweest. Kees had een korzelig karakter, maar hij was niet veel meer dan de spreekwoordelijke ruwe bolster met de blanke pit. Je moest hem wel leren kennen om die blanke pit te zien, maar ik zal nooit vergeten hoe Kees vrijwel de gehele dag en nacht bij mijn bed zat toen ik een jaar of tien geleden erg ziek ben geweest. ’s Nachts, als ik een tijdlang roerloos had liggen slapen hield hij het niet meer uit en tikte met zijn pootje tegen mijn wang om te kijken of ik niet per ongeluk dood was gegaan. Hij zag in het donker dat ik mijn ogen opende, en ging dan zitten spinnen.
Natuurlijk was Kees blij wanneer ik terug kwam van va-
kantie, maar dan realiseerde hij zich dat ik hem toch maar in de steek had gelaten, en poezen-etenstijd of niet, hij keurde me geen blik meer waardig tot er een dag verstreken was, dan viel hij uit zijn rol en liep de rest van de dag voor mijn voeten. Ik herinner me hoe ik een keer terug kwam na een verblijf in Zeeland, en alle andere poezen die we toen bezaten hadden zich al gemeld, maar Kees niet. Was hij zo boos dat hij zichzelf niet eens liet zien? Daar geloofde ik niets van. Ik heb overal gezocht, maar geen Kees. Tenslotte hoorde ik een benauwd gemiauw in de tuin. Ik ben de hele tuin door gekropen, maar geen Kees. Toch hoorde ik hem! Uiteindelijk ben ik in het schuurtje gaan kijken dat altijd op slot zit en waar de poezen dus nooit van zijn levensdagen in kunnen komen, en daar zat hij. Hij was zo blij dat ik hem uiteindelijk had bevrijd dat hij voor die ene keer vergat om boos op me te zijn. Toen Teco thuis kwam, werd duidelijk hoe Kees in het schuurtje had kunnen komen. Teco had de vorige avond in het donker een verlengsnoer uit het schuurtje gehaald, en Kees moest achter zijn hielen aan naar binnen zijn geglipt zonder dat Teco daar erg in had. Kees had zijn les geleerd, hij heeft nooit meer een poging gedaan om stiekem in het schuurtje te komen. ker niet te weinig!!!

Schoof, 67, is currently the most senior civil servant in the justice ministry. He has previously headed the counter-terrorism unit NCTV and the immigration service IND as well as the AIVD.
The four parties have been in talks on possible prime ministerial candidates since last week, when Ronald Plasterk, a former Labour minister and PVV leader Geert Wilders’ first choice, pulled out over integrity concerns.
The four parties are working to put together what they call an “extra-parliamentary” cabinet made up of half political appointees and half experts in their field. The aim is to complete the process before the summer recess.
PVV leader Geert Wilders said he is “happy and proud” to have Schoof as prime ministerial candidate. “He has good experience on the right issues… he is an independent person who is not a member of any political party.” All four new coalition parties are behind his appointment, Wilders said.
“He has broad civil service experience in areas that are very important,” said NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt. “He has no political experience but will pick that up very soon.”
According to the Telegraaf, Schoof was formerly a member of the Labour party (PvdA), but left the party five years ago.
He headed the AIVD for just one year before moving back to the justice ministry as director general. The justice ministry is the biggest in The Hague, with some 100,000 civil servants.
He had been due to retire at the age of 67 but got special dispensation to stay on the job.
Democracy Schoof said in an interview with the Groene Amsterdammer earlier this year that he had
difficulty with the frame which said “democracy is about to die, as a result of the election result”.
“The first important question is: who am I to say I see it right and the rest don’t?” he told the magazine.
The rule of law and democracy are always subject to change, he said, adding that when it comes to anti-terrorism legislation, “we look at privacy and freedom differently today than we did 20 years ago”.
His name is pronounced Skoaf, with a soft, rolling k.
The Dutch government’s hopes of limiting foreign student numbers have been boosted after senators voted to allow universities to set a cap on English-language courses.
The measure was included in the education ministry’s budget, which was passed by the upper house on Tuesday, having already been approved by MPs. The animal rights party PvdD was the only group in the Senate that voted against.
Universities and colleges will be able to specify an upper limit for the number of students registered for undergraduate courses taught in English, separately from the Dutch-language version.
Because the measure was included in the ministry’s budget senators were unable to vote on it separately.
Outgoing education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf submitted a draft law to parliament last year designed to limit numbers of international students by promoting Dutch as the primary language of tuition.
Dijkgraaf’s plans include giving universities the option of setting a ceiling on the number of students from outside Europe and an emergency brake to cap numbers if courses threaten to become oversubscribed.
But he also said it was important to ensure the Netherlands was still able to attract high-quality foreign students and tutors.
“The Netherlands needs the benefits of expertise,” he said. “We cannot do without international talent, whether it is
for science, the labour market or the quality of courses themselves.”
University protests
The University of Amsterdam will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday in an effort to head off further trouble after riot police were again called in to clear protesters on Monday.
The university authorities said in a statement on Monday evening that they could not “take responsibility for the safety of everyone on campus”.
On Monday, a walkout by students and staff in support of Palestine at the Roeterseiland complex resulted in an occupation of the building. The students were joined by several masked people, dressed in black, who were captured on camera smashing furniture and equipment, and building barricades.
The UvA authorities said they were “shocked” at the way the “peaceful protest was taken over by violent elements who misused their own right to demonstration and denied others, including the media, their rights”.
Journalists who were at the occupation were ordered to leave by the protestors before the police moved in.
FATBIKES
Road safety experts are calling for a minimum age at which youngsters can use fatbikes – chunky electric bikes with wide tyres – following a surge in accidents.
Safety campaign group VeiligheidNL has told broadcaster NOS there should be a minimum age of 16 to use the bikes after doctors reported a “worrying” rise in the number of accidents involving young teenagers using the two-wheelers.
In 2022, just seven fatbike riders ended up in hospital emergency departments, but last year that had soared to 59. In the first four months of this year, there were 33 hos-
pitalisations, a trend which if continued would take the full year total to around 100.
The figures only reflect accidents in which the rider themself was injured, not ones in which fatbikes hit other vehicles or pedestrians and are based on information from 14 of the 83 A&E departments in the Netherlands.
European Parliament elections
As befits the finest Brussels traditions, the European Parliament elections produced a result that almost everyone could claim as a victory.
The far-right PVV, led by Geert Wilders, enjoyed the biggest rise in seats, going from one to six. But it was overhauled by the left-wing joint ticket of GroenLinks and Labour (GLPvdA), which took eight of the 31 seats.
Wilders proclaimed himself the “biggest winner”, since GroenLinks and PvdA will share their seats across two European factions. But in an election that he pitched as a straight contest between himself and Frans Timmermans, it was a step backwards.
In percentage terms the gap was almost four points, a significant margin given that most opinion polls had the parties running neck-and-neck during the campaign.
Timmermans, on the other hand, was able to present the result as a win even though GL-PvdA ended up with one
seat less than they managed as separate parties in 2019. He argued it sent “a clear signal to the rest of Europe that there is no necessity to work with the radical right”.
And on a generally bleak night for Green parties around Europe, GroenLinks were the main beneficiaries of the alliance, adding a seat to the three they previously held. The PvdA, by contrast, will have two fewer MEPs in the Social Democratic group.
Sugar
The Dutch consume twice as much sugar as they think they do, according to research by the Dutch health charity Diabetes Fonds.
On average, people think they eat the equivalent of 7.4 sugar cubes a day, but in reality, they consume over 14 – underestimating their actual consumption by 10 kilos of sugar per person per year, broadcaster NOS reported on Friday.
Three-quarters of the sugar intake comes not from sweets or biscuits, but from soups, sauces and herb mixes where it is used as a flavour enhancer. Research suggests 75% of people who cook use ready-made sauces and spice mixes at least once a week, but rarely check the list of ingredients.
The charity says 1.1 million people in the Netherlands are currently suffering from type 2 diabetes and a further 1.4 million people run the risk of developing it.

De generaties die in de jaren tachtig leefden, verkeerden in grote onzekerheid door de dreiging van de bom. Het was de tijd van de Koude Oorlog.
Doemdenken
Tussen de VS en Rusland leek een race te ontstaan wie de meeste en modernste kernwapens had, de zogenoemde wapenwedloop. De Amerikanen introduceerden in 1952 de krachtige waterstofboom. In antwoord daarop lieten de Russen in 1961 de zwaarste waterstofbom ooit ontploffen. De schokgolf was zelfs in ons land voelbaar. De angst sloeg toe, waarop het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Frankrijk, China, Israël, India en Pakistan hun eigen kernwapens ontwikkelden. In 1977 ontwikkelde Amerika de neutronenbom. Een massavernietigingswapen dat mensen doodde, maar gebouwen liet staan. Deze gruwelijke uitvinding resulteerde in de eerste massale protesten tegen de
wapenwedloop. Het protesteren hielp mee, want uiteindelijk zag de Amerikaanse president Jimmy Carter in 1978 op ‘morele gronden’ toch maar af van de productie van die bom. In ons land liepen de gemoederen hoog op toen de NAVO in 1979 besloot om 48 kruisraketten in Nederland te plaatsen. Somber vroegen studenten zich af of studeren nog wel zin had, waarop Kees van Kooten en Wim de Bie de term ‘doemdenken’ introduceerden.
Stiekem toch
Het verzet tegen kernwapens groeide. Misschien mede door de liedjes van Jules de Corte, Doe Maar en Herman van Veen, die zongen over vrede en over de bom. Op 21 november 1981 werd in Amsterdam
een vredesdemonstratie georganiseerd, waar 400.000 demonstranten aan deelnamen.
Op spandoeken stonden ludieke teksten als ‘Hou je kernkop’ en ‘Liever een Rus in de keuken dan een raket in de tuin’. Op 23 oktober 1983 volgde de grootste Nederlandse demonstratie ooit, waarbij 500.000 mensen in Den Haag tegen de komst van kruisraketten demonstreerden. Rusland en Amerika tekenden in 1987 een verdrag om kruisraketten te verminderen. Hierdoor besloot onze regering om geen kernwapens te plaatsen. Echter uit geheime documenten bleek dat er al sinds 1960 Amerikaanse kernwapens op de Nederlandse vliegbasis Volkel opgeslagen lagen, bewaakt door Amerikaanse militairen.
Onbekend maakt onbemind
Wat voor beest staat er in vredesnaam op bijgaande foto? Het is een hazelworm. Een hazelworm is geen worm, en hoewel hij lijkt op een kleine slang, is het een pootloze hagedis. Ik heb ook wel eens van die dagen hoor, dan ben ik een winkelende huisvrouw, ik ga gekleed als Pipo de Clown en tot overmaat van ramp heet ik dan Robert Redford. Een hazelworm zie je niet
vaak. Ze leven meestal verscholen tussen het gras of wat struiken, en als je er een ziet dan is het onfortuinlijke dier tijdens het oversteken van een weg of fietspad jammerlijk overreden of zelfs plat getrapt. Mensen denken dat ze met een slang van doen hebben, een slang is eng en moet dus dood. Zonde, want de hazelworm zal zeker geen mens kwaad doen.

Ze eten meestal naaktslakken of wormen, en zodoende zijn ze nog eens nuttig ook, want we beleven in nat Nederland momenteel een ware slakkenplaag. Waarom is een hazelworm geen slang eigenlijk? Dat moest ik ook even opzoeken. Ze kunnen hun staart afwerpen en hun ogen sluiten, en dat kunnen slangen niet. Je vraagt jezelf af waarom een hagedis zijn pootjes verliest in de loop van de evolutie. Waarschijnlijk zaten die pootjes hem alleen maar in de weg als hij tussen het gras en takken rond wilde kruipen. En nu trappen mensen hem dood omdat hij geen pootjes heeft. Ik heb een paar maal een levende hazelworm gezien, eenmaal op het Dwingelderveld, en een paar keer langs het kleine heideveldje aan de rand van kampeerterrein De Dennen. Langs dat heideveldje vind ik ieder jaar wel een paar

dode hazelwormen, op het fietspad langs de Torenlaan of op het asfalt van de Olle Hullenweg. En dan tenslotte, waarom hazel-worm? Iemand heeft bedacht dat de hagedis de kleur van een hazelnoot had. Bij speciale lichtval zou dat best eens kunnen, maar de hazelworm op de foto lijkt toch meer grijs. Ezelworm zou misschien een betere naam zijn, of eminence grise eventueel? Machthebber die niet op de voorgrond treedt. Een machthebber is de hazelworm in mijn ogen niet, maar niet op de voorgrond treden klopt wel. In elk geval hoop ik dat de lezers van de column hun best doen om de hazelworm te sparen als ze er een tegen komen, want plat rijden of dood trappen is eeuwig zonde voor zo’n bijzonder dier.

Hello members and friends of the Dutch Club Abel Tasman
During May we had a few more Dance Nights, Happy Hours and some private functions. Also, the Club’s Annual General Meeting, was held on Thursday 16th May. There was a good attendance, which made it easy to have a quorum, necessary to conduct the AGM.
President Alfons welcomed all members and after opening the AGM, committee menbers Karen van den Hengel and Janie Thonpson chaired the meeting. Minutes of previous AGM were accepted and President’s report read out. Next was the Financial Report. Various amounts on Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Report, were further explained and questions answered, after which the report was accepted. Then following reports on Membership, Events and the DAHC, were read out. Next on the agenda was Elections. At the start of the year (July 2023) we had 9 committee menbers. During the year Annemiek Kortekaas had resigned and Karen van den Hengel and Jamie Thompson had decided not to continue. The following members had been nominated: Alfons Melennhorst, Sjors Kortekaas, Liz de Jonge, Marielle Kossen, Nick Jansen and Jeroen van Weperen. As there were no further nominations, those 6 members were duly elected. After acknowledgement that five Life Members were present Alfons thanked everyone for their attendance, closed the AGM and invited everyone to stay for a while. Hot and cold finger foods were then served and drinks were on the house.

Early this month we had another successful function, with Lunch being an Indonesian Rijsttafel. That was followed by showing a movie titled Max Havelaar, which was organized by Tempo Doeloe. We intend to have another Lunch in July, on Sunday 14th, for which more details will follow. That brings us to the Euro 2024 Soccer. As the Netherlands are participating again, we will be showing the games at the Club, no matter what time of night or morning. By the time you read this article. The first game (against Poland) will have been played on Sunday 16th June. But two more matches in the preliminary rounds will follow on Saturday 22nd June (4.30 am – 7.00 am) against France and on Wednesday 26th June (1.30 am – 4.00 am) against Austria. Hopefully we will go through to next rounds in July. Of course we will keep you informed. You can also follow our social media newsletter for updates. Anyway, come and join us (dressed in orange) in pleasant surroundings, with Dutch snacks available.
In the meanwhile, your committee is working to update the foyer and hall and hope to start soon, on some very necessary maintenance work.

Late Weghorst strike earns perfect start
A late strike by Wout Weghorst within minutes of coming on as a substitute ensured the Netherlands got off to a winning start in their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland.
Poland took an early lead against the run of play through Adam Buksa, but Cody Gakpo’s deflected shot meant the teams went into the break all square.
The match looked to be heading for a draw as Oranje struggled to prise open a tight Polish defence. But the arrival of Weghorst and the quicksilver Jeremie Frimpong with 11 minutes to play paid almost immediate dividends as Weghorst pounced from close range in the 83rd minute.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made two important saves in the dying minutes as the enterprising Poles, who were without veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, tested the Netherlands’ defence to the limit.
“It’s a dream scenario for me personally,” Weghorst told NOS. “We had a good feeling in the squad and it’s so important for us to hold on to that feeling. The absolute goal is to win the trophy together.” “Hard-fought”
Head coach Ronald Koeman said he was pleased with his team’s performance overall even though they struggled to impose themselves in the second half.
“We played very good football for an hour and created a lot of chances,” he said. “We went behind from a set piece, which was a bad moment from a defensive point of view, but from a footballing point of view I thought we were great for the first hour.
“You could see towards the end of the game that it was getting very difficult for us, but I still felt we would get the second goal. It was hardfought in the end, but more than deserved.”

In 2010, the Stad Amsterdam embarked on a remarkable journey, retracing the historic voyage of Charles Darwin aboard the HMS Beagle. This expedition, chronicled in the television series “Beagle: In Darwin’s Wake,” showcased the ship’s commitment to exploration and discovery. During this journey, the Stad Amsterdam made a memorable visit to Sydney in 2011.
Now, the ship is returning to Sydney in August, and we are proud to announce that Dutchlink members are invited to a unique experience on board.

Dat pad delen we niet met voetgangers, zoals hier, maar er kwamen na de oorlog wel bromfietsen, wat we meestal niet leuk vonden. Tegenwoordig zijn er electrische fietsen bijgekomen, waaronder “fatbikes” , die op een fietspad mogen rijden, maar vaak harder dan de toegestane snelheid van 25 km per uur gaan. Dat betekent dat een heleboel fietsers zich niet meer veilig voelen op de fietspaden. Ik heb net gekeken op een website genaamd Amsterdam Bike City en hoewel die titel in het Engels is, lees ik er net in het Nederlands over een interessante proef die niet ver van waar wij vroeger gewoond hebben, genomen wordt. Op een speciale route mogen snelle fietsers op de rijbaan fietsen met als doel het fietspad rustiger en veiliger te maken. In juli zullen we de resultaten van deze proef te weten komen. Want gewone, alledaagse Nederlandse fietsers zijn geen would-be wielrenners, zoals de meeste fietsers hier in Melbourne. Ze rijden eenvoudig van één plek naar een andere, keuvelen misschien met een vriend of vriendin die naast hen rijdt, dragen geen speciale, lycra “fietskleding” en hoeven hun haar niet met een helm te ontsieren. Hier wordt fietsen te vaak als een competitie gezien en jakkeren de arme fietsers diep over
hun stuur gebogen. Want als je fiets er uitziet als een racefiets, ga je racen, terwijl een oma-fiets tot een gemoedelijker tempo leidt en ook verschillende mogelijkheden biedt.
Waar ik woon komt een fietser soms op het trottoir op me afstormen. Op een gedeeld pad weigeren ze vaak te bellen (als er überhaupt een bel op de fiets zit) als ze van achteren langs je moeten en ze hebben blijkbaar niet op school geleerd dat je armsignalen moet geven om je richting aan te wijzen.
Gedurende het Nederlandse cabaret dat hier gebracht werd door het Zing!-koor in december 2023, heeft de onvolprezen Maaike Jan in haar sketch “De Omafiets”, haar hart over dit alles superkomisch kunnen luchten.
Behalve de “sporty” fietsers zien we meestal knapen zoals deze, die niet voor hun lol rijden:
Volgens statistieken die ik raadpleegde (mooi woord, dat “raadpleegde”), zijn er meer fietsen dan mensen in Nederland: 23.9 millioen fietsen tegenover 17.9 millioen inwoners. De reden die hiervoor in de Wikipedia gegeven wordt is ontegensprekelijk, namelijk “probably because many Dutchies have more bikes than just one.” Of zou het kunnen dat fietsen een onafhankelijk bestaan hebben en zich in het geheim in die grote fietsenstallingen voortplanten?
Totdat ik aan dit artikel begon, had ik nooit over het woord “fiets” nagedacht. Je groeit op met fietsen. Ze zijn een onderdeel van je leven. Je hebt bij je moeder achterop gezeten, terwijl je broertje in zijn stoeltje aan het stuur zat en op je twaalfde, toen je naar de middelbare school ging, je eigen (tweedehandse, maar diep-gewenste) fiets gekregen. Het woord “fiets” is eigenlijk een vreemd woord. Ik verwijs u naar de Wikipedia voor de verschillende uitleggingen, w.o. het Franse “vitesse”, wat snelheid betekent, het Duitse “Vize”, uit “Vize-Pferd” (namaakpaard), de fietsenhandelaar E.C. Viets uit Wageningen of misschien het dialectwoord “vietsen’, zich snel voortbewegen.

Vélocipède
De eerste fietsen waren ook vreemde voorwerpen. Van de vélocipède - uit het Frans, dat het weer uit het Latijns van “velox” en “pedes” (snel en voeten) overgenomen haddus de fiets zonder pedalen, tot de Penny-farthing toe. Die naam komt van twee Engelse munten: de grote, koperen penny (meervoud pence) die de oudere immigranten onder ons nog kennen van het vroegere geld hier en die je nodig had “to spend a penny”. Op het centraal station in Adelaide, bij voorbeeld, had je nog van die ouderwetse W.C.s met op de deur een metalen aanhangsel met een gleuf waar je een penny in moest gooien voordat je de deur kon openen. De “farthing” was niet veel waard, want hij was een vierde van een penny en heel klein. Je kunt zien dat het voorste wiel, de “penny” veel groter is dan het achterwiel, de “farthing”.
Wat Nederland natuurlijk een heerlijk land voor fietsers maakt, is het feit dat het merendeel van onze landoppervlakte plat is. Behalve in het oosten en zuiden, is er bijna geen heuvel te bespeuren en de Sint-Pietersberg is maar 171 meter boven NAP, dus, als we eerlijk zijn, is het eigenlijk geen berg, maar een hoge heuvel. Dat “NAP”, à propos, betekent Normaal Amsterdams Peil. Als Amsterdam-geborene en - getogene, wist ik niet dat
alle hoogtes in Nederland ten opzichte van hetzelfde niveau gemeten worden en dat een plek in Amsterdam dat peil geworden is. Zo ziet u maar wat men zoal van het internet kan opsteken.
Behalve in de centrale woestijn (waar het dan weer vaak te heet is) vind je niet veel lekker fietsbaar land in Australië. Een vriendin vertelde mij dat ze op de fiets naar school ging, heuvel op en heuvel af en als ze de wind tegen had, soms lopend met de fiets aan de hand. Ze staat er nog versteld van hoe ze het in de ergste zomerhitte heeft kunnen presteren. Dus, wat dat betreft, petje af en heb ik haar beloofd niet meer te zeuren over “sporty” mannen in lycra.
Niet alleen kan ik me Nederland niet voorstellen zonder fietsen, maar de manier waarop Nederlanders zich de fiets hebben eigen gemaakt, dwingt mijn bewondering af. De fiets is aanvankelijk een eenvoudige twee-wieler (bi-cycle), maar kan in verschillende gedaantes verschijnen. De variaties op het thema Fiets kunnen, bv, het volgende inhouden:

Wat ze ook rijden, de Nederlanders zijn waarachtige evenwichtskunstenaars op hun fiets. Met of zonder bagage; met of zonder kind of kinderen, en vooral als er geen fietspaden zijn, manoeuvreren ze subtiel door het stadsverkeer of over landweggetjes en komen meestal heelhuids thuis.

Newport Quarries – The Loss of Social License to Operate (1890-1968)

The west of Melbourne has many old quarries, the blue stone is in 3 layers built up over millennia from volcanoes that ran from the south Australian border to Melbourne. The east of Melbourne does not have this volcanic history and therefore has very different soil and ecological characteristics.
Many of these old quarries have been filled with waste and covered for sports fields and parks. Others have been turned into shopping centres such as High Point and Altona gate. This is an article about the brief history of Newport Lakes and its quarrying operations between 1890 and 1968. It is an article that is relevant to many activities that happened in our cities, which have ceased because the community no longer supported them. This is called the loss of social li-
cence to operate.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, significant changes in quarry operations in the Newport Quarries led to a loss of community goodwill and support from the Williamstown City Council closing the operations by 1968. This brief article explores how these changes impacted community trust, created animosity, and resulted in numerous unintended negative consequences. The key lesson here is the importance of involving the community in any future development or transitional phases to ensure they feel a sense of agency and participation.
A series of events led to the quarries transitioning from local, craft-based labour, producing beautiful stone blocks for proud, sturdy buildings, roads, and seawalls, to a mechanised process run by anonymous corporations with little regard for the community.
The shift began as workers
were called to serve in World War I, and the construction of the Power House commenced a year earlier. The availability of mechanical quarrying methods also increased during this period. As quarrymen left for the war, the government-guaranteed demand for crushed bluestone to stabilise the Power House on the Maribyrnong River’s muddy banks provided the means to invest in machinery and the incentive due to the labour shortage.
A 1914 photo inscription reads, “42000 cub. yds. of ‘metal’ ready for crushing,” (3,200m3) highlighting the immense scale of crushed stone required and the resulting demand for bluestone from local quarries. The mechanisation and improved technology included more powerful gelignite, steam and
air-powered drills, mechanical crushers, conveyor belts, and the increased availability of automobiles. This reduced the need for skilled labour. Those who returned from the war found they no longer had the work they left. This was made worse by the great depression which further put pressure on reducing costs and improving the rate of extraction.
The final straw was as the quarries were taken over by private companies with shareholders. Though this resulted in the investment to mechanise, it also led to pressure to increase returns.
What followed was an increase in complaints, letters to the Council and finally a series of petitions and the threat of legal action. Articles in the papers of the day went from being in the middle of the paper with amusing headlines such as “Newport Upheaval - Milk shook out of tea,” “Shaken to pieces,” “Rock through the wall,” and “Municipal Volcano” in
the 1950s. To page 5 with “Council helpless on Quarry issues’’ in 1960 and finally the front page as the state mines department became critical of the companies in 1965. By 1968 the quarrying stopped, no longer did residents only have one minute after the siren sounded to go indoors. The quarrying companies and the Council had lost the social licence to operate.
The lessons here are that change is inevitable, but the community needs to be central to any decision of how that change affects them.
The Council, the companies and the community all spent a lot of energy, time and money fighting each other. All these resources could have been used to support a smooth transition, instead of a protracted battle that continued after the quarries closed until 1986 when the decision was finally made to create the Newport Lakes Reserve. But that is another story.

Netherlands Euro 2024 squad
Although the Dutch won’t be favourites to win Euro 24, the Oranje have come a long way since their 4-0 defeat by France in the qualifiers. With a mixture of youth and experience, Koeman’s team should fear no one. It will be a tough match against Poland on June 16.
Goal keepers
The current no. 1 keeper is Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen after he took over from Brentford’s Mark Flekken who lost his spot through injury. Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow makes up the number three spot.
Defenders
Led by Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch team has plenty of quality at the back with Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries and veteran Daley Blind. However, I believe Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong will nudge Blind for the left fullback position.

Midfielders
The biggest omission is Frenkie de Jong who was unable to recover in time from an ankle injury. PSV’s Jerdy Schouten has been one of PSV’s stand out performers and is more than capable of filling De Jong’s boots. Geroginio Wijnaldum was a surprise choice as the former Liverpool midfielder is now playing in Saudi Arabia. He may be there due to his experience in playing alongside Gravenberch.
There appears to be a lack of midfielders in the squad. Possibly, Koeman had picked defenders who could also play midfield such as Frimpong, De Ligt, Ian Maatsen, and Van de
Ven.
Forwards
Koeman has an old-fashioned, but pragmatic set up front with a lone centre forward in Wout Weghorst. He has not had a great season at Hoffenheim but seems to score goals for the Netherlands. Sitting behind him will be Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons who are both in great form.
Memphis Depay has struggled with his fitness, but watching him play in the last few games, he is back to his top form. Koeman will probably play both Depay and Weghorst with one of the players coming off the bench.
The biggest surprise was the inclusion of Brian Brobbey who has not had a great season with struggling Ajax. He was favoured over the inform Joshua Zirkzee. For me, this the greatest disappointment as I am sure he would have starred in this tournament.

Will Koeman stick with three at the back? It is what the Dutch supporters expect but Koeman, the pragmatist, may change the set up to suit the conditions and opponents. With three at the back, the starting X1 (3-4-2-1) will most likely be: Verbruggen: De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake, Dumfries, Schouten, Wijnaldum, Blind: Simons, Gakpo: Weghorst. However, I think if Blind starts, the opposition will target the left side due to his lack of pace. In trying to read Koeman’s mind, I believe he will go for experience for the first game. If Koeman chooses a 3-5-2 formation, then Depay will start alongside Gakpo with Frimpong starting ahead of the 34-year-old Blind.
Botman, De Jong, van Roon, Hartman and Koopmeiners were all ruled out because of injury. Surprise omissions, Jurien Timber and Joshua Zirkzee were not selected. Timber was probably not selected because he had been struggling to get fit after an injury.

Although France is the logical favourite, they did not impress in their final warm up game against Canada with a 0-0 draw. On the other hand, the Dutch secured a 4-0 win against the same opponent and a 4-0 win over Scotland. Memphis Depay is finally fit and scored his 45th goal against Canada. He is on target to overtake Van Persie as the nation’s leading goal scorer. Jeremy Frimpong was very impressive on the right with an assist and a goal. The 4-0 win over Canada was their most impressive recent performance.
The Dutch team has seen a gradual improvement under Koeman. After their 4-0 defeat by France in Paris, they suffered a 2-1 loss in the Netherlands. However, the Dutch team is now playing much better football.
Netherlands v Iceland. On current form, the Netherlands may top the group with a superior goal difference, or it may come down to the head-to-head match. Austria is the dark horse in the group. Under coach Ralf Rangnick, they no longer sit back and attack on the break and was only a point behind Belgium in the qualifiers.

Portugal and Ronaldo are striking form at the right time. Portugal scored 36 goals in their qualifiers while only conceding two. They do have a problem though when their key players are not available. Nevertheless they topped their qualifying group ahead of Croatia.
