Beste lezer,

Tijdens het kijken naar de documentaire van Heleen van Berkel tijdens het Holland Festival kwam bij mij weer het idee terug om eigenlijk meer verhalen te verzamelen over de bootreis van Nederland naar Australie. Toen ik dan ook stuitte op een artikel van Tempo Doeloe over de bootbaboes was ik daarom ook weer verrast. Hierdoor kreeg ik weer een klein stukje van de puzzel compleet. Namelijk mijn moeder (ook geboren in Jog Jakarta) had het altijd over baboes en dat ze daardoor opgevoed waren in Nederlands - Indie, maar in dit stuk wordt de boot baboe beschreven. Interessant, want ik had daar nog nooit eerder over gehoord. Maar natuurlijk als je in Indonesie baboes gewend was is het natuurlijk logisch dat je die mee zou nemen naar Australie voor een emigratie. Alhoewel meenemen...

Ook stuitte ik op een stukje over Moesson (IndonesischNederlands maandblad)

Verder kreeg ik een heel lang artikel van Peter Reynders over de beroemde schilder Scheltema en zijn vriendin Emile en die wilde ik eigenlijk in het geheel plaatsen, maar helaas dan zou de hele krant volstaan met zijn artikel en zou je de rest van de artikelen moeten missen, dus vandaar hier ook een wordt vervolgd op.

Verder weer aankondigingen van komende Koningsdag evenementen en ik tel weer 3 feesten in Melbourne! Ik ga meestal naar allemaal, omdat ik dan een soort van carnavals gevoel krijg. Even lekker 3 dagen feesten. Komen jullie ook?

Grote stadsbrand in Arnhem

Persoonlijk relaas van de recente grote stadsbrand in Arnhem

In de nacht van woensdag 5 op donderdag 6 maart j.l. woedde een enorme brand in de historische binnenstad van Arnhem. Om omwonenden te waarschuwen werd een zogeheten NLAlert afgegeven. Dat alarm ging ook op mijn mobiele telefoon af. Om iets over vijf in de vroege ochtend klonk opeens een keihard en snerpend geluid door de slaapkamer. Ik drukte de melding in een reflex weg, geschrokken als ik was. We hadden ons kleindochtertje te logeren en ik wilde niet dat zij wakker werd (ze sliep overigens dwars door alle commotie heen).

Mijn echtgenoot kreeg eveneens een shock van het noodsignaal, sprong binnen een seconde uit bed, las het bijbehorende bericht op zijn telefoon en hing direct uit het raam van

ons appartement. Hij mompelde daarna echter heel nuchter iets van: “Oh ja, je ziet het wel”, kroop toen gewoon weer onder de dekens en snurkte verder.

Ik had inmiddels een hartslag van hier tot Tokio (was de Derde Wereldoorlog uitgebroken?) en wist op dat moment nog steeds niet wat er gaande was. Zonder bril op of lenzen in kan ik vrijwel niets lezen en ik kon de tekst zo gauw nergens terugvinden. Ik keek dus eveneens naar buiten, ongerust als ik inmiddels was, om te zien wat mijn man nou precies gezien had en waar die waarschuwing over ging.

Het kán zijn dat ik het beeld wat vertekend waarnam, omdat ik zo bruut uit m’n diepe slaap gewekt was, omdat ik nu eenmaal

een nogal levendige fantasie heb óf omdat ik me recentelijk flink verdiept had in in Operation Market

Garden en A Bridge too far. In de verte zag ik een schouwspel alsof het daadwerkelijk (weer) oorlog was. Het was nog donker, maar een geel-rode vuurzee tekende zich af aan de horizon, met grote rookwolken die even hoog waren als de iconische Eusebiuskerk ernaast. Dat dit echt een serieuze stadsbrand was, was me duidelijk. We werden geadviseerd om ramen en deuren gesloten te houden en dat was het enige wat ik op dat moment kon doen, naast de slaap weer proberen te vatten (wat niet direct lukte). Tegelijkertijd waren op anderhalve kilometer afstand tussen de 150 en 200 brandweerlieden keihard bezig om het vuur te bestrijden.

Sinds een paar weken hebben we er plots een heleboel overburen bij: de akkervarkens die op het aardappelland schuin tegenover ons huis zijn komen wonen. Tijdelijk weliswaar, maar het heeft wel impact op ons leven, want de paarden vinden al die knorrepotten maar niks.

Allereerst: waarom lopen die varkens daar? Dat is heel eenvoudig: bij het oogsten van de aardappelen blijven er altijd wat piepers achter op het land, en deze overblijfsels gaan het volgend jaar natuurlijk weer kiemen; zodoende staat het volgende gewas vol met aardappels. Je kunt natuurlijk gaan wieden, maar dat is arbeidsintensief, en sproeien is duur en natuurlijk helemaal niet goed voor de volksgezondheid. Nu is er een bedrijf in Valthermond dat varkens houdt voor het vlees, en ze bieden de mogelijkheid om deze varkens te huren. De dieren worden Akkervarkens genoemd; het schijnen verschillende rassen door elkaar te zijn, maakt niet uit, als ze maar aardappelen uit de grond

wroeten.

Ze zijn altijd in de weer; wanneer een ander varken te dichtbij komt, wordt deze al knorrend verjaagd. Onze paarden stonden de eerste dagen met gespitste oren te luisteren naar al dat kabaal dat de keutjes maken,

ze snapten er niets van. Op een goede dag besloot ik toch maar eens te kijken of ik met Jari langs de varkens kon gaan, ze lopen langs het zandpad waarover ik vaak naar het bos toe ga. ’s Morgens vroeg zijn de varkens vaak nog bij hun stalletje, zo ook de ochtend. Jari zag ze wel in de verte en keek met ogen op steeltjes naar de voor hem zo vreemde dieren. Hij stapte enigszins gespannen verder en schoot ineens vooruit; ik kon hem ternauwer-

nood houden. Het bleek dat een stel varkens achter hem aan was komen rennen in de veronderstelling dat iemand bij hun voerbak was verschenen en dat ze krachtvoer kregen. Jari was zich een hoedje geschrokken van de opgetogen knorrepotjes, en hij heeft nog zeker een kwartier lopen blazen voor hij eindelijk wat gekalmeerd was.

Waarom zijn paarden eigenlijk zo bang van varkens? Daar is geen eensluidend antwoord op. Ja, varkens stinken, en de keutjes denken waarschijnlijk precies hetzelfde van ons... . Ik hoorde laatst dat paarden van origine prooidieren van wilde zwijnen zijn geweest. Dat kun je jezelf nu moeilijk voorstellen als je een keutje naast een paard van één meter zeventig hoog ziet staan. Maar het oerpaard, waar onze viervoeters vanaf stammen, schijnt ongeveer het formaat van een flinke kat te zijn geweest. Deze dieren klommen ook nog eens in bomen, naar verluidt. Dat doen paarden tegenwoordig gelukkig niet meer, want er zijn altijd paarden die zichzelf toch al lastig laten vangen, en als zo’n dier dan ook nog eens in een boom gaat zitten... . Het blijft uitkijken wanneer je met een paard langs de akkervarkens wilt rijden. Als de paarden konden praten, zouden ze vast hetzelfde zeggen als onze katers Mattias en Azi wanneer wij visite hebben: “Wànneer gaan ze weer weg?”

Where did Emile Carabain go?

Jacob Frans Jozef (‘Jaques’) Carabain (1834 – 1933), a prolific and well-known painter of townscapes in the romantic-realist style, was born, educated and married in Amsterdam. He moved to work in Belgium in 1856. His house, in the Schaerbeek, a culturally diverse municipality of Greater Brussels, was his home base for most the rest of his almost 99-year long life. He naturalised in 1880 as a Belgian. He travelled the world to paint. Jaques also visited Melbourne and painted there for a while during the late 1980’s. Jan Hendrik Scheltema (18611941), having just arrived in 1888, not only met there with Jaques and his spouse, Helena Théodora Carabain nee Ricken, but also with their three in Belgium-born children Jean-Jacques, Émile Chrétien and Victor Eugène, and the spouses of the eldest. So they were all together at the other side of the world.

Scheltema had some relevant life experiences in common with the older and very experienced Jaques. Both of them were born, had grown up and had studied in The Netherlands and lived and painted subsequently

in Belgium for years. There they had painted different historical townscapes. Both left Holland permanently after their art education, the much younger Scheltema, after some years of study in Belgium, to live in Australia. So unsurprisingly, when they finally met in Melbourne, the two artists did get on well. Scheltema, had recently arrived in Melbourne himself when he first chanced there upon Jaques’ second son Emile. Emile was also an artist, evidently of some still life paintings, yet the literature, including on the internet, can in addition, muster little more information about him than the repeatedly copied phrase: “a still-life painter about whom little is known”. So little, that neither his date of birth nor his death date are not available yet in any literature. Here, additional facts will be added in that limited story, with some hints as to why Emile does not feature with more detail in recorded art history. Hendrik Scheltema mentioned meeting Emile Carabain in a long letter to his father, starting 27 July 1888, which took a few days to finish, as he added events on subsequent days after they unfolded:

The purpose of this book is to let people know how hard the Catholic Dutch Community worked to get Providence Village established, and to show our extreme appreciation to all the volunteers who helped contribute to this goal. While we have spent many hours creating this book, many more hours of voluntary work have been donated by countless individuals over many years. Our heartfelt thanks to all.

This book is produced to reflect on the memories, stories, and photos to distribute to the current residents and the families of those people who have donated their time and money over the years and to ensure the

history does not get lost in time, especially for the Dutch community. This has been a wonderful opportunity for Martin, Magda and Truus to spend the time together to reflect on the very early days, and later years, of Providence and we hope we have been able to collate a good story. Thank you to the people who worked before us (and since with us), sharing their story through their book 1957-1987 PROVIDENCE: 30 YEARS by Jan Bannenberg, and expanding on the following years. We hope we have produced a good story.

De bootreis met de Zuiderkruis

Naar aanleiding van het artikel van Keith Philips belde mevrouw Lamers mij op. Ze kende Keith heel erg goed, aangezien ze hem heeft leren kennen op de boot naar Australie. Ja, zeg ik, daar wilde ik juist naar vragen want ik krijg nooit zoveel verhalen over de boot zeg ik. Haha zegt mevrouw. Dat komt omdat we een soort van pact hebben gesloten toen. We zouden niet vertellen dat we de veel al nieuwe stelletjes een aantal uren alleen zouden laten in de cabin. Mannen en vrouwen reisde namelijk gescheiden van elkaar met meerdere op een kamer. haha mischien hoor je daarom niet zoveel over de bootreis zegt mevrouw. Ook kende

ze Keith goed omdat ze twee jaar met elkaar in een huis hebben gewoond voordat ze een nieuw huis hadden gebouwd. Het werd er niet even bijgezegd dat je een huis kreeg, maar die dan wel zelf moest bouwen. Zelfs de stenen was haar moeder aan het maken, terwijl er aan cement niet makkelijk te krijgen was. Het eerste kind van Keith werd geboren toen ze samen in het huis woonde. Zelf hadden ze al een kind toen ze aankwamen.

Where did Emile Carabain go? - Continuation from page 5

Yesterday morning I made another acquaintance. I came down Collins Street (one of the main roads) and entered a building where several decorators, a sculptor, a frame maker, and some painters had their workshops. In the window were a few small paintings, Italian townscapes from the hand of a Mr Carabain. I had heard that he is a Belgian and a very enterprising man, a very pushy fellow.

The letter continued: When I entered, I found the said Mr C. squatted down in a corner near a little gas stove while his assistant, a Mr Wright, who with an expression of all but enthusiasm, applied his powers to a cloth painting of some 25 meters in length, showing a bull fight in Spain. When I lifted the tip of it, there was another one of the same size underneath it, a scene of a Russian field battle, with dead bodies and skeletons at the foreground; so, two bloody high drama scenes of highly jackedup showy pathos and ditto artistic value. At my appearance, Mr Carabain got up and Mr Wright took his place to contemplate the murders a little more. We got to know each other rapidly as this goes easily amongst artists. I noted quickly that C. was from

Amsterdam, from Greek descent so he says, and with a hint of Jew in him, I think. He has experienced a lot in the few years that he has been here and often had to paint houses to earn a living. He is now on top of it and has important work at hand, as you note. (I do believe he plans to travel along the colonies with a show display. Although he answered my questions at this point with Amsterdam/ Greek/Jewish laughter and a secretive smile, they look nice guys to me, and C. provides all sorts of advice from the gold mine of his experiences. His small paintings are very cute; portrait work he does not do or most rarely, and ‘grand figure’ does not suit him well.

Some questions already arose at this point: was Emile C. born in Belgium or in Amsterdam and shortly after birth taken south? Two days later he continued in the same letter:

Carabain visited me this morning. Mr Wright had surely caught too much heat in the bull fight and probably caught a cold on the Russian Field Campaign, so he now lies in his bed, which is not a bad way to pass the time here on a Sunday in any case.

The next day he added more about Emile: Carabain has just not conjured up a golden future to me, using his own activities as proof of how one goes about things here to get ahead. He has also given lessons here and even done some portrait work and claims to be able to tell me most determinedly which paintings do sell here and their precise sale value. Landscape goes rather well here, and small paintings of town and surrounds sell always well. For a couple of pounds. Forty pounds is considered a high price for a portrait and 20 pounds is normally well paid. Mr Folingsby does not appear to make more than a couple of portraits a year and receives about 100 pounds for them. Many paint portraits from photos.

The Irish born George Frederick Folingsby (18281891), apparently referred to as the best paid portrait painter in town, was an artist and art teacher, educated in New York, Paris and Munich, was a history and portrait painter in Britain and was ‘Master in the School of Painting’ of the National Gallery of Victoria from 1882 and at the time Hendrik met Emile. Scheltema added yet more on the 1st of August

to his letter about his new acquaintances’ project: On a third canvas of about 25 sq. metres in area in the workshop of the gentlemen C. and W. the outlines emerged of an event in the history of this colony: ‘Black Thursday’, when a terrible bushfire seemed to have raged.

I may move into the same building as Carabain and then give up my current dwelling. Although I may regret it terribly, I think it is in my interest.

Scheltema thus was contemplating leaving the comfortable, spacious and probably expensive room he rented at 5 Sydney Terrace, Wellington Parade, East Melbourne. More of Emile Carabain’s gratuitous advice was added to the letter the next day, not all accepted as wisdom:

Carabain says about teaching: ‘Oh, that is very simple. You buy a chromo and you let it be copied by the miss, she then comes three times a week, when she is gone you straighten out what is crooked and make sure the chromo is copied after 3 months and good enough to show the parents, you then see she comes with a 5-pound-note and for the next quarter you

buy another chromo for a few shillings. But watch out who you take’. Scheltema finally mailed the letter. Already on 16 August 1888, Scheltema wrote again to his father: In my previous letter I mentioned moving house. The workshop in the city (which I was to share with the already established photographer Mr Greenfeld, a German Jew with sidewhiskers and a long brown coat), will be demolished and the other workshops in the building as well, so the plan is dropped. Another direction is now possible, namely that Mr Wright will live in with me. That will work out a bit cheaper for me and he is in my view a very suitable “mate”, a very good and jovial soul from Cork (Ireland). He teaches a few ladies, so they would also come here, and Carabain, with his money earning mania and zeal to push me in my career, would also visit from time to time. The parents of Mr C. will arrive here tomorrow, over from Europe. Possibly, if the above plan proceeds, we would move together to the city if something suitable becomes available there.

Thus, father Jaques Carabain’s arrival date was to be 17 August 1888. Scheltema would then be able to finally meet the famous artist, who apparently chose to come to Australia not just to paint but also to connect with his offspring already living here. Scheltema was subsequently asked to teach figure painting to a woodcarver ‘with a heavy moustache’ and a prospect for another student and had to decide whether to accept him. He calculated that he would have to employ a model and that it required at least six students to cover the costs of a model, for that one night a week, to make it worthwhile. On 13 September he wrote to his father about this:

I could decide this better if Mr Wright decides to move in with me, which I hope he will do for the benefit of us

Green beans – In authentic Indonesian curries, it is long beans (also called asparagus beans or Chinese long beans) that are used. Since I couldn’t find any here, I went with regular green beans. Their flavor and texture are obviously different, but it still makes a good substitute.

Salt and sugar – To season. Sugar also helps balance the spiciness.

Preparing the aromatic paste

First, we start by making the curry paste. It’s as easy as adding all of the aromatics to a blender, covering with water, and blending until smooth. Shallots, turmeric, chili, and cumin seeds in a blender. Homemade curry paste in a blender.

Holland Festival: Waar

Geen idee waarom het zó rustig was tijdens het Holland Festival. Ik had wel verwacht dat buiten verkopen moeilijker zou zijn dan binnen, maar dat opkomst zó drastisch lager zou zijn, had ik echt niet zien aankomen. En ik was niet de enige—ook de andere standhouders waren verrast. Gelukkig verkoop ik poffertjes, dus een overschot aan boter en maple syrup is eigenlijk geen probleem. Daarnaast heb ik nu kunnen zien dat mijn team het prima zonder mij af kan. Omdat het rustiger was, dacht ik: ach, mooi moment om met iedereen te kletsen en de Dutch Courier te promoten. Dat heb ik dan ook gedaan. “Oude kranten, oude kranten… Kijk maar even of het nog steeds zin heeft om de krant na tien jaar nog een keer te lezen!” zei ik met een glimlach. Gretig namen mensen de gratis krant aan—want ja, we blijven natuurlijk Nederlanders onder elkaar. Ik ben benieuwd of mensen hem ook echt zijn gaan lezen. Het belangrijkste doel was om te laten zien dat de Dutch Courier nog steeds bestaat, want veel mensen weten dat niet eens meer. Dus: zeg het voort, zeg het voort! voor rond te lopen over het terrein kwam ik allerlei mensen tegen. Zo liep ik Gerda tegen het lijf, die graag vrijwilliger wil worden bij de Courier om de krant voor te lezen aan mensen die dat nodig hebben. (Ik was daar ooit mee begonnen, maar zij vindt het fijn om te doen, dus dat gaat nu van start.) Ook kwam ik iemand tegen die weer klaverjassen wil opzetten op verschillende plekken en vroeg of ik een oproep in de Courier kon plaatsen zodat mensen zich kunnen aanmelden.

Daarnaast sprak ik iemand met oorlogsverhalen van zijn vader. Later bedacht ik me: Ah, Nonja had hier juist om gevraagd! Dus ik ga de verhalen aan haar doorgeven. Over Nonja gesproken—ik zat in het laatste panel van de documentaire van Heleen van Berkel en kwam tot de conclusie dat we eigenlijk maar weinig verhalen hebben opgeschreven over de bootreis naar Australië. Dat wil ik graag doen. Dus: heeft u een verhaal, groot of klein? Ik zou het heel graag publiceren! In het panel zaten ook een paar studenten die zich bezighouden met de geschiedenis van Nederlanders in Australië. Ik heb hen gevraagd of we hun scripties mogen publiceren. En last but not least: de dag voor het festival ontmoette ik twee dames uit Geelong. We raakten van het ene verhaal in het andere en zij willen ook graag voor de Courier schrijven. Dit soort dagen zijn zó belangrijk. Niet alleen voor de Courier, maar ook om even echt tijd te nemen voor elkaar en te luisteren. Uiteindelijk komt alles altijd weer op zijn pootjes terecht. Misschien hadden we dit rustige festival gewoon even nodig.

Maar… komen jullie volgend jaar wel weer? Laat ons even weten waarom je er dit keer niet was! Was het het weer? De Grand Prix? Maart, een te drukke maand? We zijn benieuwd!

Terugblik maart

Historicus Bas Kreuger vertelde aan het begin van de maand hoe hij tijdens zijn bezoek aan Broome in 2023 hoorde dat er onderdelen van de ‘Diamond Dakota’het vliegtuig dat op 3 maart 1942 door Japanners werd neergeschoten in Carnot Bay (WA) - bij mensen thuis lagen. Een Aboriginal familie wilde één object in het bijzonder teruggeven aan Nederland.

Begin maart kreeg het zuidoosten van QLD en het noordoosten van NSW te maken met ex-cycloon Alfred. We belden met Michael Visser, Quirinus Nienhuis en Audrey van der Meij-Lommerse uit QLD en vroegen hen hoe ze zich voorbereidden op de de storm. Ook spraken we met Lucille Ghijbels die met haar partner en hond op een boot woont. Vanwege Alfred was ze in een jachthaven in de Gold Coast (QLD) voor anker gegaan, maar ze op de boot bleef wachten op wat komen ging.

Laura Higgins woont in Airlie Beach (QLD), een

populaire kustplaats bij het Great Barrier Reef. Voelt elke dag daar als vakantie? En Jantine Borgdorff emigreerde ruim een jaar geleden naar Australië en belandde in South Perth. Ze vertelt waarom het daar prettig wonen is. Beiden verhalen zijn terug te luisteren in onze serie Groeten uit... .

Deze maand hadden we ook bezoek in de studio in de persoon van strategisch futuroloog Mark van Rijmenam. Hij vertelde over kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) en we vroegen hem ondermeer of mensen straks nog wel werk hebben?

Maart was ook de maand van de Australian F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne. Voor het derde jaar op rij konden Formule 1 liefhebbers terecht in het Holland House, daarover vertelde organisator John Bestebroer in het programma. En met sportjournalist Jaap de Groot blikten we vooruit op het nieuwe raceseizoen. Meer motorsport. Sander Dorsman is de teambaas van het Nederlandse

Formule 2 team MP Motorsport. Ook zijn rijders kwamen in actie op Albert Park in Melbourne. We vroegen hem of zijn team ook droomt van een overstap naar F1?

SBS Dutch was uiteraard ook aanwezig op het Holland Festival. Wij liepen daar ambassadeur Ardi Stroios-Braken tegen het lijf. Wij vroegen haar naar het belang van een evenement waarin de Nederlandse cultuur centraal staat. Ook wilden we van bezoekers weten wat zij het meest van Nederland? Waaraan anderen kunnen merken dat ze Nederlands zijn en welke Nederlandse traditie of gebruik Australiërs zouden moeten overnemen?

Peter de Groot ziet dat er grote veranderingen nodig zijn om de huizencrisis in zijn stad Perth aan te kunnen pakken. Hij is innovator op het gebied van huisvesting en werkte eerder met o.a. de Nederlandse overheid. In een interview vertelde hij wat er naar zijn mening anders zou moeten.

Huishistorica Ingeborg van Teeseling vertelde over de ‘breach of marriage act’ die van 1788 t/m 1975 in het Australisch wetboek van strafrecht stond. Deze wet leidde tot meer dan 3000 zaken, grotendeels aangespannen door vrouwen uit de werkende klasse.

Een primeur op de Europese kunst- en antiek beurs in Maastricht (TEFAF) vorige maand; daar hing voor het eerst Aboriginal kunst. Tijdens de beurs werden meerdere werken verkocht voor in totaal ruim 2,2 miljoen Australische dollar. Wij vroegen Tina Baum, Senior Curator Indigenous Art bij de National Gallery of Australia, of zij merkt dat Aboriginal kunst populairder wordt?

De Haagse opvang van zeebaboes

Naarmate meer families op en neer reisden tussen Nederland en Nederlands-Indië, werden ook steeds meer bedienden meegenomen. Het begrip ‘zeebaboe’ deed zijn intrede voor de Indonesische vrouwen die meereisden om het – vooralblanke – grut onderweg te verzorgen. Na hun aankomst in Nederland was niets voor hen geregeld en hadden zij geen onderdak, – reden voor de ver-

eniging Oost en West om in 1918 tot de oprichting te komen van “Persinggahan”, het tehuis voor Nederlands-Indische bedienden aan de Van Boetzelaerlaan 2 te Den Haag. De leiding werd toevertrouwd aan de Indië-zendeling F. de Munnik en zijn echtgenote W. S. C. de Munnik- Creutzberg.

Een zeebaboe vaart heen en weer tussen Indië en Holland. Zij verzorgt de kinderen en helpt mevrouw op de reis.

En als zij in Rotterdam of Amsterdam aankomt wordt zij afgedankt en moet zij zelf maar zien hoe ze weer aan werk komt. Dan gaat baboe naar Persinggahan”, een vriendelijke woning aan de Van Boetzelaerlaan te Den Haag,die er op berekend is, ogeveer dertig baboes te herbergen, en waar de directrice regeert en de arbeidsbeurs voor Inlandsch personeel beheert. (de heer De Munnik was in 1938 overleden, de leiding was nu in handen van mevrouw De Munnik-“Persinggahan”)

Ze zitten daar, in de grote kamer, uitziende over het Scheveningse Ververschingskanaal dertig baboes in sarong en baadje.

Zij praten geanimeerd, zij haken en breien, zij spelen grammofoon, zij schrijven brieven, zij lachen en hebben genoeglijke pret onder elkaar. Allemaal moeten zij hier een paar weken wachten. Wachten tot zij weer terug kunnen gaan naar Indië. Er is veel vraag naar zeebaboes. En dus gaan de meesten weer terug met de boot waarmee zij gekomen zijn. Er is dus een groot verloop onder Persinggahan’s bevolking. Bij elke boot die vertrekt slinkt zij met vier, zes, soms tien zielen;

na elke aankomst neemt zij met een dergelijk getal toe. Vroeger, twintig jaar geleden, toen bestond dit nog niet. Nederlandsch-Indische bedienden hadden geen tehuis, waren daardoor uitsluitend aangewezen op de familie, met wie zij uit Indië kwamen, of moesten, als zij het daar niet uithielden, zwerven. Een liefdadige Haagsche vrouw, die hun een goed hart toedroeg, nam hen toen wel liefderijk in haar huis op, zorgde wel eens voor werk voor hen, kortom deed spontaan waarvoor later het bureau gesticht werd. Er was dan ook dringend behoefte aan. Eerst was er sprake van, dat het departement van koloniën er voor zou zorgen. Maar tenslotte werd het werk ter hand genomen door de vereeniging Oost en West, met financiëlen steun van Koloniën.

Nu is er voor het Inlandsche personeel al meer gelegenheid ook buiten het tehuis een onderkomen te vinden. Javanen zijn b.v. in Den Haag getrouwd en exploiteren voor hun landgenoten pensions. Maar een „veilige haven” blijft het tehuis steeds.

Want nog steeds komt het wel voor, dat baboes slecht behan-

deld worden. Dan is het de taak van het adviesbureau, om de familie, waar baboe werkt, te waarschuwen, en bij geen verbetering het baboe mogelijk te maken, uit haar betrekking te gaan. Dat alles wordt energiek en menschlievend geregeld door de directrice van het bureau, mevrouw W.S.C. de Munnik- Creutzberg, die in de negentien jaar van het bestaan der instelling het beheer gehad heeft. Niet alleen voor het reizende personeel, niet slechts voor de zeebaboes, is dit een tehuis. Ook de baboe, die als dienstmeisje bij een uit Indië gekomen familie blijft werken, vindt hier een milieu, waar zij haar vrije avonden kan doorbrengen, en waar zij steeds haar kopje thee kan drinken. En dat komt ook veel voor. Steeds meer Inlands personeel wordt er gezocht; niet omdat dat veel goedkoper zou zijn. Ook een baboe krijgt ongeveer vijfentwintig gulden. Maar veel mensen prefereren de nauwe merkbare en toch uitvoerige zorgen van een baboe. Dat geldt ook voor de “Totoks”, dat zijn zij, die nog nimmer naar Indie kwamen. De Hollandse dienstbodennood zal aan dit verschijnsel niet vreemd zijn. En zo is dit huis een werkelijk centrum voor het Indische personeel in Den Haag en in Holland. Hier komen ze met hun zorgen en met hun kleine vreugden. Hier kunnen ze onder elkaar praten en als daar gelegenheid toeis, feestvieren. Hier kunnen ze hun vermogenspositie regelen en hun klachten uiten. Het is hun tehuis.

Wie schrijft, die blijft

’Wie schrijft, die blijft.’ ��

Vivian Boon schrijft er over in haar voorwoord in haar blad Moesson. De vraag ‘Zijn er wel boeken geschreven over de geschiedenis van NederlandsIndië?’ blijft haar verbazen, maar toch wordt hij haar nog regelmatig gesteld. ‘Niet in de laatste plaats omdat er ook een Indische boekhandel is die gespecialiseerd is in boeken over Nederlands-Indië, de Molukken, Peranakan Chinezen, Papoea’s en al het andere dat raakvlakken heeft met de voormalige kolonie.

Mensen geloven vaak niet dat er genoeg over geschreven is om een boekhandel te vullen. De literaire werken van Ernst Jansz, Adriaan van Dis, Marion Bloem, Alfred Birney of Dido Michielsen. Of de naslagwerken van Leo Dalhuisen, David Van Reybrouck of J.A.A. van Doorn. Of de talloze kookboeken die ook een geschiedkundige component hebben, zoals de boeken van Marc Tierolf,

Maureen Tan of Georgine Kwa.

Nooit van gehoord? ‘Hoe dan?’.

Betekent het misschien dat de Indische literatuur nog altijd onvoldoende wordt gezien door de mainstream media? Dat geldt niet voor de meeste van bovenstaande schrijvers of boeken, zij hebben de grote dagbladen wel gehaald of prijzen gewonnen. Of is het dan toch dat het grote publiek onvoldoende geïnteresseerd is in het Indische deel van de Nederlandse geschiedenis, en zich daarom van de boeken niet bewust is? Een gemis, want de Indische literatuur is een verrijking van de Nederlandse.

Brisbane’s Dutch migration heritage recognised with new ‘Dutch Houses Park’

The Coopers Plains and Sunnybank areas will soon see a key part of their rich migration history recognised, with Brisbane City Council supporting the naming of a park on McKoy Street in Coopers Plains to ‘Dutch Houses Park’. The decision marks a significant step in acknowledging the postWorld War II Dutch Housing Project—one of the most unique examples of international collaboration in Brisbane’s suburban development.

Following a proposal by the Coopers Plains History Group and supported by the Dutch Australian Cultural Centre, Council has agreed that the new park name will honour the legacy of the Dutch-designed concrete houses built in the early 1950s. These houses were part of a joint initiative between the Queensland Housing Commission and the DutchAustralian company Concrete Developments Pty. Ltd.

Moesson werd in 1956 door Tjalie Robinson (pseudoniem van Jan Boon, 1911-1974) opgericht onder de naam Onze Brug. Hij was in 1954 uit Indonesië gekomen (gerepatrieerd) en wilde een tijdschrift oprichten om de Indische gemeenschap in Nederland te verbinden. Onze Brug informeerde de Indische Nederlanders in de begintijd vooral over NederlandsNieuw-Guinea. Als laatste restant van Nederlands-Indië leek dit gebied hun een prima onderkomen te kunnen bieden. In 1958 wijzigde Robinson de naam van het tijdschrift in Tong-Tong, dat sinds 1978 Moesson heet.

Het redactieadres Prins Mauritslaan 36, Den Haag was tevens het woonadres van de familie Boon, waar een boekhandel en de abonnemen-

tenadministratie gevestigd waren. Een gevelsteen daar herinnert aan de geschiedenis van het maandblad. In 1995 verhuisde het blad naar Amersfoort. De familie Boon was steeds nauw betrokken bij het maandblad en leverde verschillende hoofdredacteuren, zoals oprichter Jan Boon zelf (periode 1956-1974), Lilian Ducelle (1974-1985, pseudoniem van Lilly van Zele en echtgenote van Jan Boon), Vivian Boon (senior, 19932001, dochter van Jan Boon en Lily van Zele) en Vivian Boon (junior, 2020-heden, kleindochter van Jan Boon, en nicht van Vivian Boon senior). Andere hoofdredacteuren waren Ralph Boekholt (1985-1993) en Marjolein van Asdonck (2001-2020).[1][2]

LAURENS REAEL:

The kindly governor and voc poet

Laurens Reael was the Governor General of the VOC and the one who Dirk Hartog encountered on his accidental voyage to New Holland in 1616. However, on reading about Laurens Reael, I found that he was unlike many other VOC Governor-Generals, he was sympathetic to the natives and against much of the cruelties, monopoly of trade and commandeering that was intrinsic of the Dutch East India Company.

He was the son of a merchant in Amsterdam, named after the sign or gable stone of his house/shop In den gouden reael ( ‘In the Golden Real’) and also quite a talented poet, known for writing Geuzenliederen (songs of the sea beggars) – those who opposed the Spanish Rule in the Netherlands.

One could see by this very fact, that this man, so against the cruelties of the Spanish Rule, especially the Duke of Alva would certainly be against any barbarities, even if it would be by his own nation.

Laurens was more academically inclined than his father, excelling in maths and languages. He also studied law in Leiden, where he lived in the house of Jacobus Arminius, who had married his older sister, Lijsbet Reael in 1590. Now it is fairly well known about Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, that the revered founding father of the VOC had later been executed for being a sympathiser with Arminius. However, Laurens was, at this time, living under the tolerant and even rule of Willem the Silent’s eldest son, Filips

Willem, who at his death was still a devout Catholic; but Johan van Aldenbarnevelt was persecuted by the new Stathouder, Prince Maurits, half brother to Filips Willem, in 1619. This Prince of Orange was a devout Calvinist, who was the enemy of the Arminians and jealous of the great elderly statesman, van Oldenbarnevelt.

Reael became a very able commander of ships for the East Indies; so, with all his other talents of administration and law, he quickly caught the approval of the Heeren XVll, becoming their third Governor-General in 1616, where, at that time, he was stationed at their headquarters on Ternate in the Moluccas. As we could see, before, he was a talented, but compassionate man and that was really not compatible with being an effective head of the VOC.

In the first place, he could not agree with the VOC policy of the commandeering of ships, that is the VOC taking possession of any ships in their punitive strategies of gaining complete monopoly of the spice trade in the East Indies. Their second strategy was to destroy all crops of the natives in another step towards complete control and their other order was that the natives must not, on any account, engage in any trading. Laurens saw these policies as cruel and inhuman and later wrote a lament on their cold hearted and unfeeling rule. He argued that the VOC were the most cruel taskmasters in the world, virtually condemning the poor natives to be slaves, just working for the company and labelling the Netherlands as the most cruel nation in the world for allowing this.

He had an able ally in the person of Steven van der Hagen, who was the first

admiral of the Dutch East India Company. Van der Hagen, along with Laurens Reael, protested against the harsh administration of the VOC, pushing forth their rigid iron fist, wishing to have a complete monopoly on the clove trade. Both these gifted men had protested strongly against the way the Heeren XVll treated the interests and laws of the Maluku (Moluccan) people Laurens had also welcomed Joris van Spilbergen and Schouten and Le Maire, as they had voyaged from the Dutch Republic, via the Straits of Magellan and Cape Horn. The GovernorGeneral was unaware at the time that the VOC had ordered both Schouten and Le Maire’s ships to be confiscated for an alleged breach of the Dutch East India Company’s monopoly of trade in the Spice Islands. (Maybe they had traded with the natives or not followed the VOC’s punishing rule to the letter. So Laurens wouldn’t have got any ‘brownie points’ from the Heeren XVll for this; albeit even though it was in ignorance.)

Although he had reached the ‘top of the tree’ in such a short time, Reael had no problem in resigning from his post on 31st October, 1617, after only a year as Governor-General. He could not start wars with other nations, simply on the pretext of trade. The VOC were emphatic that any other country, be they Spanish, Portugese, French, or even the Protestant English, would have no trading rights at all in the Spice Islands. Laurens Reael was especially against taking any action against the English, simply for a monopoly.

It would take, however, until 21st March, 1619, when Jan Pieterszoon Coen actually replaced him as GovernorGeneral; during which

time, quite against his conscience, Reael was forced to fight the Spanish in the Bay of Manila; the English at Bantam and in the Mollucas and the Mataram Sultanate at Japara on Java. On his eventual return to the Netherlands in 1620, he actually remonstrated in person to the Heeren XVll. As we already know, Jan Pieterszoon Coen was certainly able to successfully monopolise the Spice Trade in the East Indies. Not only ruining crops, but killing and torturing natives and his English rivals in the Massacre of Amboyna. Therefore he was recalled, temporarily, of course, for a time, by the Heeren XVll. Four years later, Coen was reinstated by the VOC, when they thought universal anger had died down a bit. Reael focused for several years on his beloved poetry, partly because he had great sympathy for the Arminians – Jacob Arminius was his brother-in-law and his collusion. in this case, prevented him from holding any public office, especially under Prins Maurits. He became acquainted with the poets Pieter Cornelisz Hooft and Joost van den Vondel and became part of the Muiderkring. (This was the name given to a group of figures in the arts and sciences, who regularly met at the Castle of Muiden, near Amsterdam). Van den Vondel dedicated a poem Lof der Zeevaart (Life of Seafaring) to Laurens Reael. After the death of Maurits of Nassau, Reael was again able to return to public office, under the new Stathouder, Fredrik Hendrik, another son of Willem the Silent, who was not so vehement a Calvinist. On 9th June, 1625, he became a member of the Amsterdam Chamber of the VOC. He was ViceAdmiral of Holland and West Friesland with the Amsterdam Admiralty and commanded a fleet of ships, fighting the Spanish at the Barbary Coast, alongside the English. He represented the Dutch Republic at the crowning of Charles the first of England, who actually knighted him and from 18th August 1627, he was acting LieutenantAdmiral of Holland and West Friesland, after the death of Lieutenant-Admiral Willem van Nassau.

At the end of 1627, he was sent as a diplomat to Denmark, which was at war with Ferdinand ll of Austria. On his way back, early in 1628, he was shipwrecked off the coast of Jutland, where Austrian imperial troops happened to be camped. They captured him and sent him to Vienna, where he was imprisoned until February 1629. On his return, the Dutch did not reinstate him in his naval functions. In the summer of 1629, at the age of 45, he married and in 1630 became a councillor and later schepen (alderman) of Amsterdam.

In 1637, he was considered for the function of Fleet Admiral of the confederate Dutch fleet to replace the hopeless Philips van Dorp, but in October, after losing his two young sons earlier, he died of bubonic plague. He was buried in Amsterdam in the Westerkerk.

A man of many talents: mathematician, linguist, poet, administrator, lawyer, diplomat, seaman par excellence and a true patriot, he was able to give great service to his country, failing only in the harsh and punitive eyes of the VOC.

Ooit had ik een gesprek met ouders over hun dochter. In die tijd verving ik onze directeur en was er een dag vervanging per week voor mijn groep. De dochter in kwestie was een dame die wel eens minder gemotiveerd over kon komen dan handig voor haar was, gezien haar progressie. Dit is de eufemistische beschrijving, zoals jullie begrijpen. Het is te lang geleden om de details van het gesprek te herinneren, maar toen we het gesprek gingen afronden zei vader opeens, uit het niets: “ze vindt jouw invalster ook leuker dan jij...”

Vele jaren daarvoor had ik geleerd dat dit prima was. Ik werkte nog als parttimer en mijn duo was een stabiele, zeer kundige, rustige, oudere vrouw. En ik was de spring in het veld, de belhamel, de drukke, zeer aanwezige, jolige juf. De meeste kinderen werden blij van de gezelligheid die aan mij verbonden was. Maar er was een meisje dat mij ooit vertelde ze haar andere juf zo

fijn vond. Zo rustig, zo voorspelbaar. Ik moest daar even van slikken.

Dat ene zinnetje leerde mij een hoop. Ik moest rustiger. Ik moest meer voorspelbaar en duidelijk.

Maar vooral: je hoeft niet de leukste juf te zijn voor ieder kind. Ieders behoefte ligt anders.

Een invalster heeft niet alle verantwoordelijkheden voor de voortgang van de klas. Zij draaide haar dag en sloot vervolgens de deur achter haar rug. Terwijl ik de klas meenam in mijn hoofd en in mijn hart. En ook nog vaak in mijn weekenden! Want een school runnen en een klas bemensen, het was een behoorlijke klus. En dat zonder extra vergoeding; een kleine ‘pet peeve’ van mij...

Ik vertelde die vader dus dat ik niet de leukste juf hoefde te zijn.

Ik vervolgde naar hem: Maar wel graag de beste! De juf die jouw kind laat groeien en die het beste uit zichzelf kan halen!

Die vader pruttelde nog een beetje na, terwijl ik hem glimlachend uitgeleide deed.

Dat het kind dat geen fouten durfde te maken, een grappig weerwoord heeft naar mij. Dat het kind wat niet durfde te zeggen dat iets moeilijk is, fluitend aan de instructietafel komt zitten voor extra hulp. Denk ik... Ik had een pittig gesprek. Ik bleef duidelijk, en ook standvastig. Wat ik zie in de klas is niet wat een ouder thuis hoeft te ervaren. Ik weet als geen ander dat de verschillen groot kunnen zijn. En soms ook de verschillen van mening over wat er op school gebeurt, hoe lesstof wordt overgebracht en wat er nodig is.

Wat zou het soms fijn zijn als je hardop zou kunnen zeggen hoe jij ziet hoe een kind zich ontwikkelt.

Maar helaas kun je niet alles zeggen. Ik kan het niet eens hier opschrijven. Dat lost ook niks op trouwens. Wie weet, wanneer ik met pensioen ben!

En dus ga ik morgen weer vol plezier naar mijn groep kinderen. Net zoals die 30 jaar hiervoor. En die jaren die nog komen. Omdat de kinderen de kern zijn. Dat hun ontwikkeling is waar ik voor ga, ieder jaar weer.

Omdat je weet dat heel veel ouders wel voelen dat je hun kind hebt laten groeien. Dat je er alles aan hebt gedaan om dat kind het beste van zichzelf te laten zien.

En soms tellen we gewoon hoeveel weken nog tot de zomervakantie...

Although Leiden’s involvement in colonialism and slavery was not as obvious as in the Netherlands’ harbour cities, its leaders, residents and university directly profited, according to new research.

Two studies by Leiden University historians Ligia Giay, Sjoerd Ramackers and Emma Sow show “various cross-connections” between the city’s executive and university with the slave trade and colonialism from 1600 until 1945.

The mayor of Leiden, Peter Heijkoop, who was formally presented with their two academic studies on Thursday, said that it was important to understand and recognise “painful facts” from the past. “his important part of Leiden city history has never before been studied on this scale,” he said in a statement to the press. “The connections they uncovered about the city’s governance, the people of Leiden and a past of colonialism and slavery will be further studied by the major and executive.” The city plans, he said, to put forward proposals for a way to recognise this shared history of Leiden, where executive leaders and residents had an active role in colonial networks.

Rob de Nijs has died Popular Dutch singer Rob de Nijs has died at the age of 82 after a career lasting over six decades.

De Nijs, who had Parkinson’s disease, died at his home in Bennekom surrounded by his family, MediaLane, the production company responsible for the current musical about his life, said.

His wife Jet told magazine Linda recently that his health had deteriorated in recent months.

The popular Dutch singer never stopped performing during his long career and gave his final concert from a wheelchair in June 2021.

De Nijs, who sang mainly in Dutch, started his career in 1962 after winning a talent contest. His first two singles flopped but the third, Ritme van de Regen (rhythm of the rain), became a solid hit and turned De Nijs into a teenage idol.

In the 1970s his career was given a boost when he started singing material by singer/songwriter Boudewijn de Groot, including Malle Babbe, one of his biggest hits.

Despite his successes, he reached the nummer one spot only once, with Banger Hart (a heart more afraid) in 1996.

Dutch villages shrink as locals leave, but some fight Dutch villages are getting emptier, figures from national statistics agency CBS have shown, but some villages are fighting back.

Between 2011 and 2021 the population shrank in over half of villages with up to 1,000 inhabitants. That was also the case in 45% of larger villages with between 1,000 and 5,000 residents, the CBS said.

The decline is due to people leaving the Dutch countryside and moving into bigger towns, the CBS said. Rural parts of northern Groningen and Drenthe are among the worst affected areas.

Fewer people also means fewer amenities, such as banks, schools, a supermarket or a post office, which in turn only makes village life less appealing.

One of the main reasons people are leaving is the lack of housing for locals, Dorien Wissing (57) from the village of Megchelen in the Achterhoek (Gelderland) told the AD.

Wissing is one of a group of locals who are fighting to keep her village of just 1,000 inhabitants alive. Megchelen still has a primary school of 60 pupils, a vibrant local community and a football club but many of the amenities, such as a supermarket, have disappeared.

Wissing has been volunteering at a supermarket run by the locals for the last 10 years, “so the younger generation would have something,” she told the AD.

However, the lack of housing means young people have to go elsewhere. ”It is very difficult for youngsters to find an affordable home here,” Wissing said. Two of her sons have already moved to other villages.

But here too, the people of Megchelen have come together to solve the problem. Some 50 homes are being built as a result of local initiatives at different locations in the village.

“All these buidling projects have been started by people from the village,” local George Kiwitz, who owns five of the plots, said. “That is Megchelen. If no one else does it we do it ourselves,” he said.

Not enough public toilets

Many older people in the Netherlands have opted not to go on an outing because there are not enough public toilets and if there are, they are too dirty to use, according to a survey among 5,500 people over the age of 65.

Almost all the respondents were unhappy with the number of public toilets available in the Netherlands, particularly in city and village centres, the survey showed.

Women are most often hard put to find a loo when visiting the countryside, whereas fewer men said that is a problem. Four in 10 men said they would simply pee “in the wild” (wildplassen) and a quarter of women would do the same if brought to the brink. Some respondents said they used incontinence pads or a bottle to pee in as an alternative solution.

Many of the respondents wondered why other countries manage to have a network of clean toilets while the Netherlands has just 500, including 350 urinals, nationwide. Paris alone has 750 public toilets.

The union has formed a Toilet Alliance with digestive system charity MDL Fonds to urge local councils to do something about the problem. And Amsterdam said last year it is spending €4 million on public toilets for women. At the time, there were just nine official loos for both men and women inside the ring road.

“They have to realise that in 2040 there will be 5 million over-65s in the Netherlands and they will all have to go,” Van Herpen said.

Defence union and other sources have told broadcaster NOS that the ministry is looking to expand its workforce to some 200,000, including military, civilian and reservist forces.

A majority of MPs, including three of the four coalition parties, have voted against the idea of using debt – Eurobonds – to boost military spending, putting Schoof in a potentially awkward position.

“It’s a discussion that we are having in the Dutch parliament and is not being talked about here,” he said. “The Netherlands is against Eurobonds and I have said that before, but that does not mean you cannot have constructive talks about ways to ensure defence is strengthened.”

Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot told RTL at the presentation of the DNB’s annual report on Thursday that the Netherlands needs to be less emotional about the idea of taking on more debt, temporarily.

“Ultimately it is a political choice and I hope it will be made on rational not emotional grounds,” he said.

She found that Leiden was also an important educator for the sons of colonial leaders and traders, who often went on to important functions – although it was also a place where the children of prominent people from Indonesia and Suriname were later educated, and formed a critical network opposing exploitative colonial trade.

Alicia Schrikker, director of research at the Leiden University Institute for History and one of the research leaders, was surprised that the city was connected with these trades in so many manners. “It is striking how many different ways colonialism and involvement in slavery played a role in Leiden’s society and university,” she said. “We found it in Leiden’s care for the poor but also in a scientific discipline like astronomy, for example.”

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., (March 20, 2025) –Fram2, the first human spaceflight over the Earth’s polar regions, announces that SpaceX is targeting Monday, March 31, 2025 for Falcon 9 to launch the all-international crew of four (INCLUDING ERIC PHILIPS THE SON OF KEITH PHILIPS)

aboard a Dragon spacecraft to a 90-degree circularized orbit from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Fram2 will have up to three launch attempts within a three-hour launch window, with SpaceX targeting 11:20 p.m. ET for liftoff. This new flight trajectory will unlock new possibilities for human spaceflight and provide a deeper understanding about our planet and its polar regions. With the exception of the Apollo lunar missions, the North and South Poles have not been fully visible to other astronauts in orbit, including those onboard the International Space Station. To date, the highest inclination achieved by human spaceflight has been the Soviet Vostok 6 mission, at 65-degrees, in 1963. Building on the rich history of polar exploration tied to its namesake, Fram2 will view the polar regionsfrom new heights. The mission, which was named after the original Fram ship that first reached the Earth’s polar regions in the 1800s, honors the adventuring spirit of early polar explorers while reaching new milestones for technology, commercial space travel and research.

From an early age, Chun dreamed of both exploring the polar regions of the Earth and traveling to space and in his pursuit of this goal, began exploring and learning more about both frontiers. He selected a crew of international adventurers that he met through these pursuits and is eager to complete this historic mission.

Jannicke Mikkelsen, Vehicle Commander, is a Norwegian film director and cinematographer specializing in fringe technology that includes creating next-generation technology for movies shot in remote and hazardous environments such as the Arctic, ocean, aviation and space. In 2019, Jannicke served as Payload Specialist on the record-breaking polar circumnavigation flight One More Orbit mission in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. She is an experienced storyteller and looks forward to utilizing technology to share the polar region with the world.

Rabea Rogge, Mission Pilot, is a robotics researcher from Germany, currently pursuing her PhD in Norway. She has always been fascinated by extreme environments and studies them to understand the current limits of our world – and learn how to push beyond them. Her work spans unique topics that include leading satellite missions to

ocean robotics in the Arctic. Eric Philips, Mission Pilot and Medical Officer, is an Australian professional polar adventurer and guide who has completed numerous ski expeditions to the North and South Poles. He is co-founder of the International Polar Guides Association and co-creator of the Polar Expeditions Classification Scheme, which has earned him international recognition and respect.

Throughout the three-day mission, the Fram2 crew will capture data about the polar regions to be shared with a broad audience, conduct a range of experiments that will expand humanity’s understanding of the poles and space travel, and share several updates via Starlink throughout their time in space. Additional aspects of the mission include:

In collaboration with the University Center of Svalbard, Fram2 will support the SolarMaX Mission to film aurora-like phenomena to create an open-source database of aurora photographs for researchers and citizen scientists. The crew plans to study green fragments and mauve ribbons of continuous emissions comparable to the phenomenon known as STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), which has been measured at an altitude of approximately 400 - 500 km above Earth’s atmosphere. More information about the 20+ experiments planned for this mission will be shared in the days leading up to launch.

The crew has teamed up with Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS International), to host Fram2Ham, a polar history focused competition for the ham radio community. While the crew orbits Earth, they will transmit images of various locations – but with a twist as they’ll be cut and mixed up

as puzzle pieces. Participants from around the globe will assemble the pieces, identify the location and uncover its significance to polar history. Passionate about helping young people experience space, the crew worked with ootiboo to create The Blue Marble Project. The crew will answer 12 questions from students in Europe while in space and record the experience, so students will see themselves floating next to an astronaut.

In addition, the crew will bring significant artifacts from history with them to space including a piece of the original Fram ship deck on loan from the Fram Museum in Norway; a historical medal from the collection of the German Museum of Technology in Berlin, which commemorates the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal; and The Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication from the Starmus Festival, which recognizes the work of those helping to promote the public awareness of science.

The Fram2 crew is in the final stages of essential training activities. Over the last eight months, the crew completed simulation training on the launch vehicle and spacecraft, orbital mechanics, operating in microgravity, high gravity,zero gravity, and other forms of stress testing. This also includes emergency preparedness training, spacesuit and spacecraft ingress and egress exercises, as well as partial and full mission simulations. The crew also participated in additional activities, including a wilderness excursion in Alaska, to ensure they are well-prepared to face close quarters and harsh conditions before going off into space.

RECTIFICATION ABOUT MY SON ERIC (MARCH DUTCH COURIER)

It was not a German designed house. The house was designed and built by Victoria designers and builders using Passivhaus principles, first developed in Germany.

There are many in inaccuracies in the article ABOUT MY SON ERIC but it’s the space mission I am most concerned about.

For many years my company Icetrek guided Chinese tourists to Antarctica/the South Pole but never a team of Chinese astronauts.

I was never in any discussion with Chinese astronauts. I was invited by a former client, crypto billionaire and former Chinese national, now a citizen of Malta, to join a space mission called Fram2, named after the pioneering Norwegian polar ship, Fram. I did not apply for this position, I was invited.

Fram2 will be in orbit for 3.5 days (approximately 60 orbits) on board a SpaceX Dragon vehicle, completing the first manned orbits over the North and South Poles. We have nothing to do with the International Space Station, we are a free-flying mission and do not dock with the ISS. We splash down off the coast of California.

Elke maand bespreken wij in het kort een nieuwe titel die is toegevoegd aan het bestand van Nederlandstalige boeken in de Dutch Club “Mies” bibliotheek, 99 Loftus Street, Leederville, Perth, WA.

Adem is een ‘mogelijk kind’. Op het moment dat zijn ouders elkaar ontmoeten in een oude Oost-Europese stad, springt er een vonk over en komt hij als geest tot leven. Er bestaan ontelbaar veel mogelijke kinderen en de meeste zullen nooit het levenslicht zien, maar met Adem is iets bijzonders. Als zijn ouders na hun eerste ontmoeting het contact dreigen te verliezen krijgt Adem een voorschot op het leven. Hij heeft kort de tijd om zijn ouders weer bij elkaar te brengen en zo zijn eigen leven veilig te stellen. Met ontwapenende naïviteit gaat hij op pad. Want één ding weet hij wil leven! Ik heb dit boek met heel veel plezier gelezen en ik weet zeker dit boek zal aanslaan bij 8 – 13 jarige lezers.

Dit is een roman over een vader en een dader en beschrijft helder hoe de liefhebbende vader dezelfde man kan zijn die een jonge vrouw verkracht en vermoord. Zijn geliefde doch-

ter groeit op naar de leeftijd die zijn slachtoffer had toen hij haar vermoordde wat leidt tot terugkerende flashbacks van de daad.

Hij houdt het jarenlang geheim vooral om zijn dochter te beschermen.

De schrijver is er in geslaagd om in het hoofd van de dader te kruipen en door zijn ogen zijn leven te bezien. De herinneringen aan de moord die zich af en toe onwillekeurig aan hem opdringen veroorzaken veel stress, evenals de druk van de omgeving op “de maatschappij” om deze moord eindelijk op te lossen.

De eenzaamheid van de dader wordt niet benoemd, maar wordt wel zichtbaar en voelbaar juist doordat de lezer de wereld ervaart door de beleving van de hoofdpersoon. De grote vraag die zich tijdens het lezen aan mij opdrong was: Waarom niet voor een andere oplossing gekozen?”

Het boek is een page-turner en dat is het ook als je niet op de hoogte bent van de hele kwestie die Nederland jarenlang in de ban heeft gehouden.

Wat Zegt U?

Tot voor kortgeleden wist ik natuurlijk wel dat Nederland een klein land is, maar niet dat het zo klein is, dat het twee en een half keer in Tasmanië past! En hoewel Tasmanië dus meer dan twee keer zo groot als Nederland is, heeft het maar 570,000 inwoners, vergeleken met de bijna 18 miljoen van Nederland. Nederland is dus niet alleen heel klein, het is tjokvol. Het is één van de dichtsbevolkte landen op de wereld, want onder de landen die op zijn minst 7.5 miljoen inwoners hebben, ligt Nederland op de vierde plaats. Het feit dat Nederland een heel klein land is maakt het nog opmerkelijker dat het niet alleen drie hoofdtalen, maar een duizelingwekkende verscheidenheid aan dialecten heeft.

Informatie die ik op het internet heb gelezen vertelt mij het volgende:

De Nederlandse overheid erkent drie regionale talen in Nederland: het Nedersaksisch, waartoe de dialecten van (een deel van) Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe en Groningen behoren, het Fries, met uitzondering van Stadsfries (Leeuwarden en andere oudere Friese steden) en het Limburgs. Wat ik boeiend vind in het bovenstaande is dat het ons vertelt dat “De Nederlandse overheid erkent drie regionale talen in Nederland:” “Ja, waar anders?” denk ik dan totdat ik verder lees en zie dat er natuurlijk ook in de Antillen nog steeds Nederlands gesproken wordt.

Maar om het bij Nederland te houden, hier komt nog een mededeling:

Het Nederlands kent honderden dialecten, met een officiëel aantal tussen de 250 en 400. Onderzoek toont aan

dat het zeer waarschijnlijk is dat deze dialecten al honderden jaren bestaan, terwijl het “standaard” Nederlands pas later werd geïntroduceerd als een poging om de dialecten enigszins bij elkaar te brengen. Het feit dat mensen die maar een paar gehuchten verder weg wonen, (of woonden) dingen anders uitspreken, kan ik begrijpen, maar dat ze ook andere woorden voor dezelfde dingen hebben, dat vind ik vreemd. Kijk, als wij in een bergachtig land zoals Italië zaten, waar mensen elkaar maar met moeite kunnen bereiken, dan kan ik me dat soort verschillen indenken, maar in ons kleine vlakke landje met als enige “berg” een hoge heuvel in Limburg?Wij hebben het aan de leerplichtwet van 1 januari 1901 te danken dat in ons land iedereen als kind naar school moet waar, als we enigszins ons best doen en het geluk hebben, een inspirerende juf of meester te krijgen, we op zijn minst leren rekenen, lezen en schrijven. En dat lezen en schrijven wordt niet in dialect gedaan.

Waar algemeen Nederlands geleerd wordt

Het is niet verbazingwekkend dat dialecten aan het uitsterven zijn, want sinds de komst van treinen, bussen en auto’s en goede fietspaden zijn we binnen de kortste tijd op bezoek bij mensen die vroeger “te ver weg” woonden. De invloed van andere talen, vooral Engels, met de komst van films in onze plaatselijke bioscoop, en later op TV en nu het internet, betekent dat zelfs ons “Algemeen Nederlands” niet zuiver Nederlands bleef. Denk maar aan: fitness, airbag, airconditioning, barbecueën, creditcard, deadline, E-mail en fulltime als enkele voorbeelden van woorden uit het Engels overgenomen die door Nederlanders zo vaak gebruikt worden dat ze nu als onderdeel van de Nederlandse taal fungeren. Dialecten zijn weliswaar aan het uitsterven, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat we ze niet meer tegenkomen en er af en toe verbaasd van staan. Het beroemd-

ste voorbeeld uit Zeeland dat mij door een Zeeuwse verteld werd is het volgende: Kiek, kiek, een kacheltje op de diek!

“Wie zet er nou een kacheltje op de dijk?” denken de meeste Nederlanders als ze dit horen, want ze begrijpen wel dat “diek” dijk betekent. Wat ze niet weten, maar wat een aardige Zeeuwse vriend of vriendin lief aan ze zal uitleggen, is dat voor de Zeeuwen een kacheltje niet een voorwerp is uit metaal dat ons prettige hitte geeft, maar een veulen!

En dit is maar één voorbeeld uit één provincie. We weten allemaal dat Fries een heuse taal is, dus veel meer dan een dialect. Voor alle niet-Friezen is het een vreemde taal, net zoals Frans voor Nederlanders een vreemde taal is. Om maar meteen te laten zien hoe anders Fries is, hoeven we niets eenvoudigers te doen dan gewoon even naar de woorden te kijken voor wat ons allen aangaat, namelijk familieleden: Heit (vader), mem (moeder), pake (opa), beppe (oma) en bernsbern (kleinkinderen). Het Fries is onze meest buitenlandse taal met banden naar Noord-Engeland en vooral Schotland. Het Schotse woord voor kind is “bairn” en velen in Schotland gaan ’s zondags naar de “kirk”.

In het zuidelijke deel van ons land horen we ten eerste de zachte g en pas als je als “Noorderling” een tijdje in het zuiden gewoond hebt, zoals ik vanuit Amsterdam naar Tilburg, begrijp je pas hoe vreselijk hard de onzachte g klinkt! Het Limburgs is één van onze drie regionale talen en in de Wikipedia heb ik een paar Limburgse zinnetjes gevonden:

Doa velt mig de boks van aaf / Doa valle mig de sjoon van oet.

De mösje valle vaan ‘t daak. Veel niet-Limburgers zullen begrijpen, denk ik, waar ze het over hebben.

Een gezellig onderonsje

Wat dialecten betreft, hebben alle steden natuurlijk hun eigen zegswijzen.

Wat dacht u van de volgende Haagse gezegdes: Astie huilt, huilt-ie uit één oog - betekenis: gierigaard of: Ben je van de pot gepleurd? - betekenis: Ben jij helemaal gek geworden?nHoe vreemd om erachter te komen dat niet alle “Hagenezen” deftig praten! “Deftig” is het tegenovergestelde van “plat” en in alle steden wordt vaak “plat”, niet “zoals het hoort”, gesproken. Ten eerste, klinken plat uitgesproken woorden niet als Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands en ten tweede, vertellen je ouders en onderwijzers je al van jongs af aan dat je “netjes” behoort te praten. In Amsterdam en Rotterdam vooral wordt de z een s: ik hep de son in de see sien sakke en een v een f, zoals in effe (even). De titel van dit artikel zou in deze twee steden meteen geleid hebben tot een gezegde dat in alle twee populair is: Wa seggie? Assie fal dan leggie (Wat zeg je? Als je valt dan lig je.) Natuurlijk zijn platte zinnen wat grammatica betreft vaak niet correct. Een voorbeeld is deze Rotterdamse uitdrukking: hij heb een snee in z’n neus (hij is dronken). Als je in Rotterdam een duur horloge, bv een Rolex, draagt, dan loop je met een boterklokkie rond en als iemand tegen je zegt: Ja toch, niet dan, dan geeft hij je groot gelijk. Tot slot een paar Amsterdamse woorden en uitdrukkingen die ook door niet-Mokumers begrepen en gebruikt worden. Wist u eigenlijk dat “Mokum”, dat stad betekent, uit het Jiddisch komt, net zoals een heleboel andere platAmsterdamse woorden?

Hier komen een paar: smeris, sjoege, lef, porum, kapsones, jajem en goochem. En als je bijgoochem bent, zien mensen je als een betweter.

Wat ik leuk vind, is dat dit woord in 2014 tot het mooiste Amsterdamse woord gekozen werd.

overnemen van een anderstalig programma in een andere studio vormde een balangrijk onderdeel van de panel training.

Nadat je geslaagd was moest je eerst twee uur onder toezicht de panel bedienen en als dat goed beoordeeld werd door de toezicht houder kreeg je je vergunning welke twee jaar geldig was en dus elke twee jaar opnieuw een mini examen doet om je kennis te testen en je vergunning te vernieuwen. In de eerste jaren deden we de programma met twee mensen waarvan één het programma maakte en presenteerde, en de ander de panel techniek verzorgde. In de loop der jaren had ik het privilege om als panel operator eerst met Lucy Bertens en daarna met Helen Dijkstra te werken. Nadat Helen stopte met haar radiowerk deed ik de programmas solo d.w.z. ik maakte de programmas thuis en deed het presenteren en de techniek verzorgen live in de studio. Covid bracht daar een eind aan want we mochten uiteraard niet meer de studios in maar, ‘The show must go on”, dus maakten we de programmas thuis en stuurde ze via het internet in naar het radio station waar een skeleton staff ervoor zorgde dat programma op tijd de lucht in gingen. Het thuis programma maken vergde een investering om de akoestiek thuis zodanig goed te krijgen dat er geen of nauwelijks verschil was met de studio akoestiek.

In de loop der jaren is de samenstelling van onze radio groep natuurlijk veranderd en we hebben nu een kleinere groep mensen dan toen ik begon 25 jaar geleden. De techniek is natuurlijk enorm veranderd met nu digitale panels naast de oude Harrier panels en we gebruiken voornamelijk CDs in plaats van LPs en tapes. Tot op heden blijf ik programmas maken en presenteren want het is zolangzamerhand een hobby geworden. Vanwege m’n radio werk heb ik over de loop van de jaren de kans gehad om een aantal interessante mensen te ontmoeten, waaronder onze Koning en verscheidene mensen die ons Koninkrijk vertegenwoordigen, of in andere hoedanigheden met de Nederlandse gemeenschap in Queensland te maken hebben.

Twee Friezinnen

Mijn zoon Antonie (18) en zijn gap year

Enkele maanden voordat Antonie naar Italie ging met zijn vriendin deed hij een rare beweging met zijn knie en raakte hij geblesseerd. Een traject om te herstellen werd ingesteld wat heel veel fysio bezoeken inhield en oefeningen in de gym. Zelfs toen we even op vakantie waren in Bali waren we aan het zoeken waar de gym was, zodat hij kon blijven trainen.

Een aanstormend talent in cricket heeft mij ooit verteld. “Je bent zo goed als je blessures “ en ik heb dat altijd in mijn oren geknoopt. Je kan dan wel talent hebben en een hele grote dosis van zelfdiscipline je moet het met je lichaam doen. En dat houdt vooral in : Luisteren naar je lichaam.

Antonie is nu gelukkig weer terug op het voetbalveld van Melbourne city, want het is natuurlijk ook best wel frustrerend als je eindelijk bij een professionele club zit en dan op de bank moet zitten, water halen voor je team, maar toch ook nog niet echt deel uitmaken van het geheel.

Antonie (18) speelt nu voor de under 23 van Melbourne City, het “development team” Bij Melbourne City spelen ze hun spelers allemaal een leeftijdscategorie op. Antonie heeft eigenlijk zijn hele leven in hogere teams gespeeld. Dit is hij dus wel gewend. Het fijne is nu vooral dat andere kinderen nu

ook zijn leeftijd hebben, want ik heb het eigenlijk altijd wel als een gemis gevonden dat aansluiting met teamgenoten anders voor hem moest zijn ivm de leeftijd.

Zijn Melbourne City team vind ik inclusief en motiverend en ik ben blij dat hij nu doet waar hij altijd van droomde .

Ooit met een item van Dutch TV heb ik Antonie de toen coach van het eerste team van Melbourne City (John van ‘t Schip) laten interviewen. Een van Antonies vragen was: “Hoe word ik een professionele voetbalspeler?”

Het antwoord van John van ‘t Schip was: “Niet ieder jongetje kan een professionele voetballer worden, maar het is vooral belangijk om plezier in je spel te houden.”

Dat plezier houdt hij er zeker in. Toch ziet hij het ook als werken, want ja “Ik wil nou eenmaal dat dit mijn beroep wordt.” Aldus Antonie.

Ik kan niet wachten om John v ‘t Schip een update te geven van dat kleine jongetje met de vraag : Hoe word je een professionele voetballer.

Prachtig om zijn ontwikkeling te zien.

However, the top Dutch clubs can no longer take a win for granted. The top clubs do not have the talent of past years, and the lower clubs are improving. So often I’ve watched games where the lower clubs are attacking more, and look the better of the two teams, only to have victory snatched away by stupid passes or poor finishing.

NAC were one nil up after an excellent goal by Leo Sauer reminiscent of Arjen Robbin cutting in from the left and unleashing an unstoppable drive from outside the box. Then NAC self-destructed. First giving the ball away needlessly in their defensive midfield and were lucky the attempt at goal hit the bar. Still determined to give the ball away, a back pass to the goalkeeper was chased down by an Ajax player forcing the foul and subsequent penalty. Vrolijk could easily have been given a red card but was issued with a yellow despite the Ajax protests. Taylor

sent Vrolijk the wrong way to make the game 1-1 at 31 minutes. A couple of minutes later, Taylor featured prominently in the buildup, passing the ball inside the box before Berghuis slammed the ball home from close range. In the second half, Weghorst made his long-awaited return coming on as substitute with the rising star, Mokio. Although NAC came close to equalising with as stinging shot parried away by the Ajax keeper, the second goal summed up Ajax’s new attacking style. A long diagonal 40 metre pass from the left midfield found the winger Oliver Edvardsen who passed promptly to the overlapping Taylor. He wasted no time in crossing the ball low to a rushing Mokio to score from a few metres out. Edvardsen, almost made it 4 but his shot narrowly passed the far post.

Bad passing by the side in possession seems to be endemic across the world and in every league. Games have been lost through the most stupid passes where there is no pressure. The mantra of always passing from the back, frequently leads to disaster. Farioli has cut that out of the Ajax game using a more common-sense approach passing long when

necessary and breaking from defence as quickly as possible. He has beefed up the back four by playing a five-man defence when under attack with the central midfielder in front of the back four. The attack is much quicker and more direct than previous years which is a reflection of the modern game.

His tactics appear to be paying off with Ajax defeating both Feyenoord and PSV twice in the same season. “Football isn’t always as pretty, but we’ve beaten PSV and Feyenoord twice in one season. That never happens! “, cheers Sjaak Swart, an Ajax legend.

However, like the best of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord players in the past, but especially Ajax, Farioli is likely to be snapped up by the rich Italian or English clubs.

After a 3-3 draw in Spain, the Netherlands was unlucky to lose by penalties, (5-4). Had they not had a man sent off in the first leg in the 81st minute, (Hato) Spain probably would not have scored in the last minute. It proved costly.

To win through to the 2026 World Cup, the Dutch will have to play Malta (10 June), Poland (4 September), Lithuania (7 September), Malta (9 October), Finland (12 October), Poland (14 November) and Lithuania (17 November).
