Sommige weesjes belanden in opvangcentra.

New coach for Ajax Winter in Melbourne
John Heitinga returns to Ajax as coach, Marcel Keizer to assist.
May 30, 2025
John Heitinga, currently assistant coach to Arne Slot at Liverpool, is to take over as coach at Ajax following the departure of Francesco Farioli on a two year contract, Dutch media reported on Friday afternoon.
The 41-year-old was interim coach for the second half of the 2022-23 season following the sacking of Alfred Schreuder, steering the team to a thirdplace finish in the Eredivisie.
Marcel Keizer, currently without a club, will be Heintinga’s assistant. The two previously worked together with the youth team in the 2016/2017 season, although Keizer was then the head coach. Since then he has worked for AlJazira, Sporting Portugal and Al Shabab. Farioli quit after one season
after narrowly missing out on the league title but securing Champions League qualification for the first time in three years.
After his spell as interim coach Heitinga joined West Ham United as assistant to David Moyes, before moving to Liverpool when former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot was appointed as head coach a year ago. Slot steered the club to its first English premiership title in five years this season.
Heitinga played 218 matches for Ajax as a central defender between 2001 and 2008 before going on to play for clubs including Atletico Madrid and Everton. He also won 87 international caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals.
It’s that time of year again — when Melbourne turns inward.
When I first arrived from the Netherlands, this seasonal shift was such a strange phenomenon to me. I couldn’t make sense of it. My once-outgoing friends no longer wanted to go to the theatre or even for a walk on the beach.
As a Dutch person, I wasn’t used to changing my lifestyle because of the seasons. Sure, we enjoy the sunshine and a drink on a terrace when it’s there, but in winter we still go out — whether it’s windy, hailing, or raining. I found that adventurous, even invigorating. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself.
Now, after living in Australia for 20 years, I understand a little more about what it means to go with the seasons. It’s like hitting a reset button — each season invites you to re-evaluate what you’re doing and fully embrace the shift. Seen in that light, it can be a beautiful thing.

The Dutch team has looked very impressive in their recent World Cup qualifiers against Finland, and Malta.
Netherlands v Malta
Goals: Memphis Depay (9, pen, 16), Virgil Van Dijk (20), Xaxi Simons (61), Donyell Malen (74, 80), Noa Lang (78), Micky van de Ven (90+2) Virgil Van Dijk returned to his former stadium in Groningen to score as the Dutch stormed to their second win this month.
A penalty and a fine strike from Memphis Depay lifted his total international goals to 50 equalising Robin van Persie as the country’s top scorer. Van Dijk scored with a stunning low drive and Xavi Simons netted from an acute angle just after the hour mark. Donyell Malen netted a double with Noa Lang scoring in between.
Micky Van De Ven, the hero of Tottenham’s Cup win, made it eight in stoppage time. (Who could forget that goal line clearance to clinch the Europa League Winners’ Cup!)
Netherlands followed up their 2-0 win in Finland, with goals from Depay and Dumfries. Frenkie De Jong’s previous absence through injury, highlighted his value with an outstanding player of the match performance dominating the midfield. Gakpo and Dumfries also played well.

Appelientje
Continuation from last paper:
Where did Emile Carabain go?
By Peter Reynders
last week Messrs Carabain and Wright, the latter having been my house mate for some time, travelled to Sandhurst with their ‘show’, which thanks to my helping hand was fortunately ready in time for the ‘fair’ there at Easter. Wright had an accident about a fortnight before by falling over with a ladder. I was sitting inside, and he was outside in the backyard, where the show was set up by way of trial, to do something on the roof timbers when a heavy fall and the resulting groaning made me rush outside. He had landed on his backside and his spine was sprained in the loins. It fortunately was not too serious, because after seven days in bed, he was able to walk, although with wonky steps. Some heavy work, such required by the setting up of the show, he will not be able to carry out for a while, having a weak health anyway, which was why he had migrated to these districts. I think that all will depend on the athletic muscles of Mr Carabain. During the preparatory work C. could not resist repeatedly, widely and loudly praising my proficiency in carpentry. Among other things, I produced two nice boxes for the device. On a hot afternoon I dragged the timber for it, very long planks, from a sawmill through the suburbs to the house, for over an hour. It makes you strong and healthy. Prejudices against any sort of hard work are for-
tunately unknown here. This is the first thing that a ‘new chum’ must learn here. In the same letter he mentioned finally meeting with the parents of Emile: Recently I made my acquaintance with Jaques Carabain Sr., and his wife, who have already been staying in Melbourne for some time. He is a lovely person, in many respects the opposite of his son, who, although basically a good guy, is too boastful, irascible, and too uncivilised to very much appeal to me. The elder Carabain is a very sensitive man, travelled, educated, very civilized, an artist of the old school, who has worked with much success. As a painter of mostly Italian townscapes, he made a name for himself in Europe. I have seen here several good paintings by him. The man is surely not at ease here, which is understandable. He seems to have wanted to settle here as he has two sons who live here, both married, while the third one came with him. They all paint - more or less. The whole family C. is thus gathered under the southern cross. His furniture, including some of value, suffered a shipwreck at the Cape. For a moment he thought to get compensation from the insurance, 10.000 francs, but now he may get them back, damaged with extra costs, poor guy. He lives in St Kilda with another son, where I hope to visit him on occasion.
That the eldest son also painted (more or less) is not wellknown andhard to find in the art literature. The third son
who came with him, Victor Carabain (1863-1942), became the better-known artist of the three brothers, painting in the style and subjects almost indistinguishable from his father’s.
Concise news on how the mega painting show went in Sandhurst finally came with Scheltema’s letter of 16 May 1889 to his father: Messrs C. and Wr. cannot complain about too much success with their show, though when set up the thing was mesmerizing, yet too serious for the jolly fun of the Sandhurst Show, so they returned to Melbourne a week after their departure here. The contraption now lies dismantled here in the back yard. Wr. has continued his lessons, except for his evening class, which he has granted to me […] At the moment is Mr. C. also without an activity but married a wife with money. Anyway, he is too energetic to sit on his hands. The old man C. will depart soon. He complains bitterly about Australia. He worked with so much success and in doing so remained an artist. But he cannot sell anything here even with all his business talent. He seems to have a fair bit of money. This movable indeed demountable panorama style art extravaganzas thus did not

In the picture: Hans van de Zandt
Johannes (Hans) van de Zandt was born in January 1945 in The Hague, Netherlands. His parents were Annie van Koert and Daniel van de Zandt. He had five siblings, one sister, Aquinia and four brothers, Ton, Wim, Ben and Cor. They went to the government primary school on the Beeklaan and on the Mient. Grandfather Van de Zandt was a builder. Both Hans’s Opa and his father were active socially and got a Dutch Ridderorder for that. In their spare time they sang in a choir that performed in nursing homes. Sadly, father Daniel was not in good health and died aged 58, about half a year after Hans migrated for Australia.
Hans’s father worked part-time as a builder and also had inherited a tobacco shop. Once they were old enough, all the kids had to help in the tobacco shop. Their mother worked afternoons in the shop, and mornings in an office. The family lived behind and above the shop.
Hans was not a good student. He couldn’t sit still long enough in class and didn’t do his homework. He also smoked, which was forbidden at school, so he dropped out and went to work at age 14. His mother organised an office job for him. It was understood that he still had to learn everything and had to go to typing lessons at night. That typing didn’t work out, and it was suggested that
Hans would learn plumbing. For some time, he went to the trades school and worked as an apprentice plumber, but he didn’t like it and also had trouble with the studying side of it.
In his social life Hans had started acting with an amateur stage group. When a colleague at the group decided to emigrate to Canada, Hans at 19 decided to go with him. In 1964 they left and went to live in Vancouver.
Hans got a job in the building industry, working on putting an extra story under existing houses. This was done easily as most houses were timber.
These jobs involved a lot of carpenting and Hans worked very hard building houses during the week. He then was pumping petrol on the weekends. This meant that he didn’t have time for social life and he got a bit lonely.
After one year in Canada, Hans returned to The Hague and went to live at home again. He soon met Ria Satink, who was sharing a house with a cousin of Hans, and they started going to dances together. Hans was now selling insurance, which he was successful at, and they decided to get married. Ria and Hans got married in June 1968, and a daughter, Pia was born in The Hague in April 1969.
Hans had a decent job, and he and Ria were happy with baby Pia. They had good rela-
tions with their families and Hans enjoyed acting with the amateur stage group. But they wanted a house with a garden, and the housing situation in Netherlands was not good. Both he and Ria decided that they didn’t want to stay in The Netherlands. Before she met Hans, Ria had spent some time in Australia, and they decided to move there permanently.
Brothers Cor and Ton Van de Zandt decided to come with them.
The three Van de Zandt brothers, Ria, and one year old daughter Pia left for Australia in May 1970. It was a difficult moment for the close Van de Zandt family, but everyone was positive about it. They arrived in Melbourne on the ship Ellenis and travelled to Canberra, because Ria had a friend there. All of them stayed two days with that friend, which was of course very crowded, so they rushed to rent a house in Farrer. Later Hans, Ria and Pia moved to Dickson and eventually bought a house in Holt. Their second daughter, Queenie (Aquinia) was born in September 1970. Hans and Cor went to work as carpenters. Canberra had a variety of jobs in construction and they worked on many well-known buildings, such as the Marist college. The company Civil and Civic (started by Dutchman Dick Dusseldorp) had multiple projects in Canberra, and the brothers worked on a lot of those. While they were working on Woden Plaza they met many other Dutch men. Civil and Civic also had projects at ANU, where Hans learned to become a building estimator. Hans worked for another company on a house in Wanniassa. Later he worked on the National Gallery project, estimating steel. He switched jobs a lot, but was never without one.
Hans became site administrator on the new Parliament House. While there, he was asked how to get some name badges for the workers. He investigated and found an overseas supplier for name badges. He could get them at a better price than a domestic supplier had quoted, and Hans arranged for the badges to be supplied. Soon more badges were needed, and then other name tags, hats, and more personalised items. Hans worked on supplying these as a side job, but eventually he had so many
requests for such items that he set up a business and retired from the building industry. Hans also opened a Euroroll shop with brother Ton, where they sold Dutch style sandwiches. The shop did well, and their sandwiches were very popular, but after one year the relationship with Ton broke down and Hans had to buy him out. Ton then started a shop in Civic with Dutch friend Nick van Zomeren, but it didn’t do well. Hans sold the Euroroll shop to an Australian as he couldn’t afford to keep it, and pay off the loan. Sadly, the Euroroll closed down after one year as the menu was changed and the Dutch sandwiches were no longer offered. Hans now became a business man and was traveling a bit for his new business. Ria was not happy about that. Hans continued to supply the badges, flags, etc. Sometimes items didn’t sell via his shop, and Hans had to go sell them at the markets. But eventually he had three shops, in Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Woden. He was importing embroidered badges and also bought an embroidery machine that could be programmed for many different tasks.
In 1985 Ria’s father died, and she went to Netherlands for the funeral. When she got back, she told Hans that she wanted a divorce. They got a friendly divorce.
Hans was now semi-retired, and had been asked to become Dutch Club manager. He was given a contract for three years. Before starting the job, Hans was going to Holland for a visit, but when he got back the club cancelled his contract.
While in Netherlands, Hans had bought 50 small pans for the club, intending to use them to serve the food, but he now had to go sell them at the markets. He had also managed to get a 6% mortgage from a Dutch bank to replace the unaffordable 18% mortgage that was ruining the club. The new mortgage never got activated. Not long after his divorce, Hans met Nilda Naval at a business reception. In 1986 they got married. They subsequently had two children, Chantelle and Jeffrey, who are adults now and live in Melbourne. His daughters from his first marriage are living in Sydney (Pia) and Melbourne (Queenie). Hans and Nilda worked hard at the business, and eventually they were able to hire a mana-
ger, and do a step back themselves. However, Hans kept working until recently, when he was diagnosed with diabetes and sold the business. When the Dutch Club stopped existing, in the early 2010s, Hans got some friends together and they organised an annual “Oranjefeest”, which included lunch or dinner, first at the German Club, later in some other venues. These were very popular.
In 2019 Hans organised a Sydney concert by Guus Meeuwis, a popular Dutch singer. Over the years he has organised various other events, like a Gospel and Arts Festival in ACT. However, in early 2025 Hans turned 80 and considering his health, he planned a last celebration for April 2025. To keep it simple, he planned a book of life stories by many Dutch migrants in the Canberra region. The book, called ‘Tulips in the Capital’, was launched on Kings Day at the German Club, which was followed with a concert by Mirusia (famous of Andre Rieu concerts) and his daughter, Queenie. The concert was a great success, as was the book which is to go into a second printing.
Over the years, Hans has kept his interest in Dutch culture and music (Pierre Kartner, Kleine café aan de haven, Smurfs), and foods. He still eats herring once a month, but had to cut out the sweets. Although Hans was always busy, he did still find time for a hobby, a stamp collection, and a collection of mini-bottles of liquors from around the world. He now doesn’t drink alcohol anymore and did cut out many foods, especially ones with sugar. He also goes to the gym regularly and has visibly lost weight.
Hans is very positive about his experiences as a migrant in Canberra. He enjoyed friendships with many other migrants (Dutch and non-Dutch) as well as many Australians, and his family has been doing well. He now enjoys the visits from his six grandchildren. He says that he would do it all over again.

Where did Emile Carabain go? - Continuation from page 5
become popular in Australia. The large European panoramas and cycloramas in permanent structures had found a market in large cities targeting knowledgeable art audiences. The last cyclorama, apparently still successfully operating today, is Panorama Mesdag in The Hague. Emile’s mega demountable canvases failed, mainly because they were tried in a funfair atmosphere of licking ice-creams, spookhouse and shooting tent, livestock displays and dog shows in a country town and made by artists nobody had heard of, rather than as a stand-alone permanent mega art exhibition with art by famous artists in a large urban centre. On 4 October 1889 Scheltema wrote a few more details about the Belgian art family to his father:
I have not seen the young Carabain for a while. I visited his old man the other day at the house of his other son in St Kilda, whom I also met. This son, just like the other, married an English woman. He seems to be a good man, but it is just about impossible to converse with him as he is highly argumentative, so black is white and vice versa. Mr C. Sr. is a rational person and suits me well. He will shortly return home with his wife, a roundas-a-ball Amsterdam lady, via North America, accompanied by his son and wife in St Kilda and his third son, Victor. His first mentioned son, the one I first met, will stay here for now. Scheltema tried to explain to his father in his letter of
10 October 1889 what Jaques Carabain looked like:
Mr. Carabain Sr. is still here. He is a pleasant person, very lively and witty. He looks much like the Shah. He cannot sell anything here, although he has obtained about 20 medals at different exhibitions. That his facial looks were perceived ‘much like the Shah’ of the day, is indeed understandable when comparing Jaques Carabain’s self-portrait
to a photo of Shah Naser alDin of that time. Whether Carabain Sr. also painted in New Zealand, Scheltema did not report.
Comments in the literature that Jacques Carabain painted from photographs, I would have taken with a grain of salt. If that’s how he produced his townscapes, the question arises why would he travel so far, slowly and expensively around the world to make his paintings? The letters not only record that he was in Melbourne in person, but also that Jacques Carabain did not like very Melbourne much, indeed “complains bitterly about Australia”, thus that this reported Melbourne visit may have been his only one. Some further evidence that Jaques Carabain was artisti-
cally productive in Australia, includes that there are some Australian townscapes from his hand, including his painting of Melbourne’s Town Hall of 1889 now in the State Library of Victoria. Some additional evidence of it, as recorded in Scheltema’s letter of 5 December 1889, when the Carabains had still not left, reads:
A short while ago I visited the old Mr. Carabain again. He now paints town scapes, mainly of Australian towns and mostly from photography because he is too old to trek around, and he makes them in London. His scenes from Italy are very good paintings, much better than his current work. To exploit this country one must be strong and healthy. The effort to just see the land is tough enough. The best system is the method of the gold prospectors, on a horse with a blanket, a tin billy, and provisions.
Scheltema wrote in his letter of 8 April 1890, that the senior Carabains had left Australia, but not before two Carabains had been introduced to Charles Rolando at his studio, where Scheltema was teaching:
The old man Carabain has departed also with the son who lived in St Kilda and the two women. Before his departure he met Rolando. The younger E. Carabain is still here and visits now and then Rolando’s house. They seem to like each other. Mr R. believes all the lies and nonsense E. C. serves up with his peculiar flux de bouche and vice versa. It is hard to determine who is the more ignorant. Rolando’s wife is always polite and friendly. Only a few months after father Carabain left, one of his paintings again sold at a Melbourne auction of the private collection it belonged to when he was still in Melbourne, as Scheltema wrote on 3 June 1890:
The collection of Mr Staples, which in content disappointed me very much, has fetched little in Gemmell and Tuckett’s auction. The highest price was for life size sheep by a certain Morris, 27 pounds. 22 pounds for a rather large Italian townscape with many figures by Carabain Sr., and the rest for less, amongst which a large “Rolando” for 16 pounds (I
think bought for 40 pounds some time ago).
The land boom depression made itself felt again, which was also the cause why some of collector Staples’ collection had to be auctioned in the first place. Scheltema wrote on 6 August 1890 a brief update on Carabain Sr.’s travel when Scheltema underscored the elderly artist’s tremendous wanderlust, which he had all his life, with:
The old man Carabain was in Honolulu with his wife and two sons, where he was entertained by the peculiar customs of the indigenous people and landed via Frisco and the States again in the (Amsterdam) Kalverstraat and is now perhaps on another trip again.
Scheltema reported to his father on 4 October 1892, thus two years later, the final chapter of his ‘The Carabains in Melbourne’ narrative i.e. his final sighting of son Emile, who had not joined them leaving and, for a while, had remained in Melbourne: Mr. Carabain has divorced lawfully from his wife at her request and has since disappeared without a trace. Thus, the whole Carabain family seemed to have left Australia, as Jacques left with two sons and their wives while the third son divorced and ‘disappeared’. Yet, from time to time the name returned in Scheltema’s letters to his father including on 29 June 1916, to contrast the old man’s work with what then was seen as modern art:
I saw a couple of paintings by J. Carabain (the father). They looked a bit oleographic. He had however a good eye for the picturesque. In his time that was still a first requirement, not so nowadays. Beautiful subjects are not any more allowed to inspire interest, one must be susceptible only for the emotions the weather awakens. By some that is reflected beautifully, but as hundreds of painters follow that line it becomes a bit boring and one expects to see a bit more than just sky, trees and grass. The critic of the Herald here, himself a failed painter, disapproves of everything that is of any significance besides the atmospheric effect, especially something of historic relevance. I do not see

the point of that separation and exclusion. A beautiful subject is like the sugar coating of the bitter pill of emotion to be swallowed by the public.
NOTE on the permanent giant cycloramas in Australia that targeted art fans in cities did also have their period of success in Australia:
Small panoramic views had of course already been painted in Australia quite soon after English settlement. Cycloramas were first introduced to Australia by American promoters Howard H. Gross and Isaac Newton Reed and were popular from 1889 to 1906. The country’s first cyclorama opened in George Street, Sydney in March 1889 presenting ‘The Battle of Gettysburg’. Two months later a similar cyclorama opened in Melbourne presenting ‘The Battle of Waterloo’. The cyclorama building in Melbourne was a large hexagonal building designed by George Johnson situated in Victoria Parade, Fitzroy (now the location of St Vincent’s hospital) and then referred to as Eastern Hill. It cost £6,500 pounds to build, the picture was 1858 square meters and valued at £20,000, with the whole exhibition costing £30,000.
Later that year a group of local investors bought the cyclorama from Gross and Reed to form the Melbourne Cyclorama Company. The directors of the company included Henry Byron Moore, Henry Gyles Turner, Lloyd Tayler and theatre entrepreneur James Cassius Williamson. Gross and Reed continued to supply the newly formed company with pictures from their collection, including ‘The Battle of Gettysburg’.

The Dutch may be world champions at cycling, hockey and speed skating, but they’ve got some pretty odd sports all of their own. Here is a list of our favourites.
Five strange sports
Paalzitten
It’s what it says – pole sitting. A lot of people, each sitting on his or her individual pole. The person who stays on the longest wins. The poles are erected in water so the person falling off doesn’t get hurt. It is presumed that pole sitting originated in Friesland where the Frisians tried to stave off the boredom of long winters by inventing sports to do with poles, like fierljeppen and pole sitting.
The sport became nearly extinct presumably because sitting on top of a pole did not stave off boredom. It has now made a come-back as a tourist attraction but is not a spectator sport.
Korfbal
Two teams of eight trying to get a ball into the opponent’s korf or basket. The game was invented by a Dutch primary school teacher in 1902 and remains one of the very few mixed gender sports – with four men and four women per team.
The korfbal world championship is held every four years. The Dutch national team have consistently won the title since the championship was established in 1978, only losing to Belgium in 1991. This is because Korfball is only seriously played in the Netherlands and Belgium –plus a few other places.
Klootschieten
It’s throwing a leaded ball as far as it will go. Two teams have to make their way across a field or a paved area in the shortest number of throws possible. Klootschieten is popular in Overijssel, Drenthe and part of Gelderland and elicits childish sniggers in the remaining provinces because ‘kloot’ (the leaded ball) also means ‘testicle’.
Fierljeppen (called ‘bongelwuppen’ in Groningen)
Fierljeppen is Frisian for vaulting over a ditch using a long pole and people who live in waterlogged provinces are very good at it. Contrary to pole sitting contestants, vaulters are likely to end up in the water much more frequently and consequently are much more fun to watch.
Skûtsjesilen
Another Frisian speciality. It’s a sailing competition using skûtsjes, or traditional
Why Tasmania?

Why change that name?
Frisian sailing boats formerly used to carry freight.
The official competition only allows entry of skippers from sailing families whose boats represent a certain town or village which prompted those who got their hands on a skûtsje any old how to organise their own championships. This is a good thing because it allows you to see more of these beautiful boats in action.
Kaatsen
This form of handball dates from the Middle Ages. Again it’s the Frisians who played it most and it remains their number one sport. It is related to other sports, like fives or American handball, in which the bare hand is used in lieu of a racquet. This still holds true for the person who serves the ball; the other players are allowed to wear a leather glove.
The game is played with two teams and scored in a similar way to tennis. Kaatsen is not unique to the Netherlands: some form of it this game is being played in over 50 countries and regions.

With the recent name change of the Mexican Gulf, it became even more interesting to me to look at the process of some of the geographical name changes in history. In that case the name known in Latin as sinus mexicanus had featured on European maps since at least the 1640’s. Such changes usually had a process to justify the failure of the old and to select a new name with public input, before approval by the Government. When looking at other name changes, I looked also at the other fairly recent one of the naming of the additional (12th) Dutch province created by taking below sea-level areas of surrounding ones, though strictly not a renaming of an entity but creation of a new one. It was named after a former lake (Flevo) shown on an ancient Roman map of the area. As the Romans were a conquering enemy of the Batavians it becomes apparent that with such name changes history can be considered more relevant than short-term politics. Yet generally, a convincing justification for a name change, its significance to people using it and the historical aspects of both the existing and the new name have traditionally been key ingredients in such decision making. I chose to have another look at the process of the fascinating name change of Van Diemen’s Land (VDL) to Tasmania. I then also noted that the names Tasman Island, a small island of a surface area of 1.2 square kilometers, as well as that of the Tasman Sea had remained for very long before the name Tasmania was agreed to by Queen Victoria and approved by the Government in London, and also until today. Representatives of VDL residents as recent as the middle of the 19th century proposed to the British Government to give VDL the name Tasmania. It was approved and an official name change was proclaimed. But it had been an incredibly slow process. Uncharacteristically, it was a name change from one Dutch name to another. How “Dutch”: the name Tasman really is, may not be so clear, as there does not seem to be anyone living in the Netherlands at present with that name. But that is another story.
Why the British Government made an exception and called one of their colonies after a man who was born in 1603 in the Dutch village of Lutjegast, about 25 km west of the city of Groningen, is now quite clear. In the previous three quarters of a century, they had removed many Dutch names from the map of Australia and replaced them with English ones. Especially during the time of First Minister William Pitt the Younger (1759 –1806), who at age 24 became the youngest ever person to hold the position of prime minister in world history, many Dutch names were erased from the Australian continent. It also appears that during Pitt’s administration the name VDL was already destined for change, but at that stage not yet after a Dutchman. This is the conclusion of Tasmanian librarian Terry Newman, who researched this name change’s history in some detail during this century, providing a rich source for the story. He referred to a letter by “William Bentick (sic), the third Duke of Portland” from 1802, which included the notion: “…the group of islands currently known as Van Diemen’s Land…”. Newman concluded that the words “currently known as” meant that the name was, already then, considered temporary.2)
After Pitt and after the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, where Napoleon, who had annexed Holland, was defeated for the first time, and its sequel the historically better-known Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Netherlands became again officially a British ally, fighting on the side of the Brits in the latter historically very significant clash. After Pitt’s passing and those battles, removal of the Dutch place names from British colonies became a bit less fanatical. The name New Holland had disappeared, but the name New Zealand had not.
The length of time between the first documentation of the alternative name Tasmania until its official adoption was close to half a century. Three ‘connected’ politically conflicting proposals were played against each other during that period: the formation of VDL as an independent colony (it was part of NSW), the termination of its penal colony status, and a change of its name.

University in Adelaide.

My passion is yoga
Breathwork

The new Camp Columbia heritage display
With support from the Brisbane City Council’s Lord Mayor’s Better Suburbs Grants program and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Australia, the Camp Columbia Heritage Association (CCHA) has created a high-quality outdoor display to educate visitors about this important international heritage site.
Camp Columbia served as a major U.S. Army base during World War II and later became the administrative headquarters of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) government-in-exile from 1944 to 1947—the only time a foreign government has operated from Australian soil.

The cabinet has been mounted on the reverse side of an existing noticeboard near the Reserve entrance. While the front display remains focused on biodiversity and recreation, the new panel provides detailed historical context— including rare maps, photographs, and information on military operations and international cooperation.
Designed as both an interpretive panel and an informal memorial, the display invites reflection on the sacrifices and strategic alliances forged on this site during a pivotal moment in world history.

While the installation is primarily educational in nature, its reflective tone and historical depth lend it a quiet memorial character, offering a place for visitors to pause and acknowledge the international cooperation and service that defined the site during and after the war.
The new display, located at the entrance to the Reserve’s walking tracks, presents a clear timeline from 1939 to 1947, highlighting American, Australian, and Dutch activities at the site.
“This project shines a light on a forgotten chapter of Brisbane’s wartime history,” said Paul Budde, Chair of the CCHA. “With the last visible remnants of the camp still located here, it’s crucial to protect and promote this site as a

It has become a cultural tradition in the Netherlands , especially in cafes, clubs and family gatherings. DIRK HARTOG: GLIMPSES OF An ELUSIVE MARINER
BY MONICA de KNECHT
Dirk Hartog is the most important figure in Australian history out of all the VOC voyagers; yet he is the one who has the least biographical chronicles about him.
He doesn’t even have a known portrait of himself. Nonetheless, we can still glean some glimpses of the man through some of his exploits and what we know of his history.
He is the most important Dutch seafarer in Australian history, because out of all the VOC traders, he is the only one who left the physical written evidence of his presence on a pewter plate; nailed to a post. That says something about the man. That he was one who wanted to really make his mark. He wanted to say. I am Dirk Hartog and I was here in an unknown unmapped area of the world and this is my proof. His mission, for the VOC, was go to Bantam. He certainly did not want to be consigned to chronological anonymity. He also strikes me as a generous individual because he names the others in the achievement to render them, also, forever imprinted in historical annals. Here it is, written very naively, as a simple seaman would.

AO 1616.” (G. Arnold Wood – Project Gutenberg)
English Translation On the 25th October, arrived here the ship Eendracht of Amsterdam; the upper merchant, Gilles Mibais of Liege; Captain Dirk Hartog of Amsterdam; the 27th ditto set sail for Bantam; undermerchant Jan Stein, upper steersman, Pieter Doekes from Bil, Ao, 1616
We do not know his exact date of birth. However it is known that he was baptised on 30th October, 1580 in the Oude Kerk, (Old Church); Amsterdam; being the second son and one of at least four children of Hartych Krynen, Mariner and his wife Griet Jans. Therefore, it appears that the ‘sea was certainly in his blood’. (Another interesting fact is that he did not adopt the surname of his father (Krynen) – instead he was always Hartog – very similar to his father’s Christian name - Hartych).
Because Dutch spellings of names were not standardised, at the time; his name was spelled in various ways, including Hartogsz, Hartoogs, Hatichs and Hartoochz on several signed documents, still in existence. But Dirk Hartog is the favoured name, historically. He must have liked Hatichs best, for that was the name by which he wished future generations to remember him, as it was written on the plate.
In 1609, Hartog began his trading career with the VOC as the skipper of the Dolphyn (Dolphin). He went on several voyages to all the European ports to establish trading connections.
On 20th February, 1611, in the Oude Kerk, Dirk married 18 year old Meynsgen Abels. They are not known to have had any children. Possibly because Dirk was, like other VOC sailors; away from home for most of his life and indeed not long after he was married he was back aboard
the Dolphyn on his trading commissions.
By 1616, his trading prowess and seamanship had come to the notice of the ‘big noises’ of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie; so he was commissioned as skipper of the VOC vessel Eendracht (meaning Concord or unity) on its maiden voyage to the East Indies. It sailed from Texel on 23rd January, 1616, carrying ten money chests, containing 80,000 reals (pieces-of-eight), valued at about 200,000 guilders. The weather was so cold, that immediately before sailing, twenty-one crew members and eight soldiers deserted by walking ashore over sea ice. (One can possibly gauge that these were not all Dutch sailors or marines, as the Dutch should have been well used to the cold.)
The determined Hartog still continued on, with a depleted crew, until he reached the Cape of Good Hope on 5th August, 1616; leaving on 27th August, following the route devised by Hendrik Brouwer, from South Africa to Java; that reduced voyage duration from a year to about 6 months, by taking advantage of the strong westerly winds in the Roaring Forties. He is believed to have been blown off course by these winds. So therefore he made landfall at approximately 26 degrees latitude South, where he and his crew came on various islands, presumably uninhabited, making landfall on an island off the coast of Shark Bay. They spent 3 days examining the coast and nearby islands. He named the area t’landt van de Eendracht, after his ship. But before he left he scratched his famous inscription on the flattened pewter plate, which he nailed to an oak post.
When the Eendracht reached Macassar, ( Ujung Pandang). there was a very tragic encounter with the local inhabitants. This would have been a bloody battle, as it resulted in the deaths of 15 of Hartog’s men and may have made a fearful and traumatic impression on the valiant mariner. However, he still continued on, doggedly, in his trading adven-
tures for the VOC, visiting many other centres in the East Indies, where he delivered the chests of money and a very rich cargo of benzoin which was an aromatic wax used for medicinal purposes. He finally reached his original destination in Java on 14th December, 1616, 5 months after he was scheduled to arrive.
So we can see that Dirk Hartog was a man that would never be ‘thrown off course’ by anything, even something so appalling as the confrontation on Macassar. It looks like he was a man that would never do things ‘by half’ His task would always be finished.
Nevertheless, he did leave the VOC’s employment, but not to retire to domesticity with his young wife and a comfortable Calvinist environment in 1618. From 1619 onwards, he ended
his working days captaining the Geluckige Leeuw (Lucky Lion), on voyages to European ports; especially trading in the Baltic regions. He seemed to like to be something of a loner, away from family – a man with ‘itchy feet’?
We’re not sure why he left the VOC. It’s a possibility that the Macassar incident would have weighed on his mind and he may have thought it better to get away from the savage tribes in the East Indies and travel a less dangerous trading route. For the Dutch Baltic trading was in grain and not lavish goods. (Harreld, J.) He would also be under less pressure, as it is known that he was 5 months late and the VOC were not impressed by tardiness, even for good reasons. A ‘dressing down’ by the Governor General in Batavia may have been the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ for the plucky seaman. The Governor-General, at that time was Laurens Reael. Maybe Reael was slightly peeved that Hartog hadn’t called the new area
(Afterwards Abel Tasman made sure he called the new land he discovered Van Diemens Land after Antonius van Diemen.) So here we can maybe assemble from this that Hartog was not a crawler.
After that he finished completely with the VOC; still, however, completing one last assignment for them; leaving Bantam on 17th December, 1617 with the Eendracht carrying a rich cargo of silk and other goods back home. (Interestingly no money this time – possibly the VOC, knowing he was leaving them and being quite a suspicious lot, only trusted him with silk and wares).
He also strikes me as an independent soul, who enjoyed trading for himself, without the stress of working for such a hard taskmaster as the VOC, ending his mercantile adventures the same way as he began as a simple trader-mariner, therefore we can gather from this that he was not a terribly ambitious man. That may not have sat well with the parents of his young wife, who may have been just a little disappointed with their son-in-law. Who knows??
Therefore; in conclusion, we can gather from this elusive man, the following assumptions.
Here is a simple mariner, a man who would call ‘a spade a spade’; determined, thorough, not terribly learned; definitely not a sycophant and not one who wanted to climb the ranks, such as Hendrik Brouwer, who afterwards became GovernorGeneral of Batavia. Most of all a man who liked to live without pressure and without danger, simply trading in grain and other commodities – an owner skipper. He may have wanted to be by himself in his last years; mayhap because he couldn’t live with all the nagging of in-laws?
However, he did die in his native Amsterdam at the young age of 41 Another two twists in the saga of this most mysterious VOC voyager, is that it is not written

Geert Hendrix, drawing from his heritage and passion for sustainable living, established Farmwall to address the growing disconnect between urban populations and food sources. The company’s mission is to transform cities into food-producing ecosystems, thereby enhancing food security and reducing environmental impact. Farmwall’s innovative approach combines education, technology, and community engagement to foster a culture of sustainability.

Growing food at home and in the office - Farmwall an innovative system developed in Melbourne by Geert Hendrix In the heart of Melbourne, a visionary initiative is transforming the way urban communities engage with food production. Founded in 2016 by Belgium/Dutch entrepreneur Geert Hendrix, Farmwall is a pioneering social enterprise that integrates sustainable agriculture into city life. By introducing indoor vertical farming systems to workplaces, schools, and hospitality venues, Farmwall aims to reconnect people with the food they consume and promote environmental responsibility.
I met Geert before the project started, and it was just an idea he was playing with. As we met and chatted I was excited about the concept and very pleased at how far it has come.
I asked Geert about his journey from The Netherlands to Australia.
“I’m a Flemish Dutch speaker from Gent, Belgium, with my mum living in Born, one of those tiny villages in the Netherlands that forms the narrow strip separating Belgium from Germany. My journey to Australia started in 2011 when I came over to represent my family’s heritage brewing company, which specialised in traditional Belgian sour beers. Back then, most Australians had never even heard of sour beer, and my role was to introduce these

At the core of Farmwall’s offerings are their indoor vertical farms—compact, aquaponic systems designed to grow microgreens and herbs efficiently within urban spaces. These systems not only provide fresh produce but also serve as educational tools, demonstrating principles of circular economy and sustainable agriculture.
Farmwall’s impact is amplified through strategic partnerships across multiple sectors. In the corporate realm, companies integrate Farmwall systems to promote employee wellbeing and meet sustainability goals, including the reduction of Scope 3 emissions. Educational institutions, such as Hume Central Secondary College, have adopted Farmwall’s programs to teach students about sustainable food systems and
Since its inception, Farmwall has garnered significant recognition for its contributions to sustainable urban agriculture. The company successfully launched a crowdfunding campaign to install its initial vertical farms in Melbourne’s restaurants, marking a pivotal step in its growth. Co-founder Serena Lee played a crucial role in expanding Farmwall’s reach, leading initiatives that integrated urban farming into corporate and educational settings. Farmwall’s innovative approach has been acknowledged by various organizations, highlighting its role in promoting environmental sustainability and community wellbeing.
I asked Geert what is one memory of the journey of starting Farmwall that makes you smile?
“A memory that always makes me smile from the early days of Farmwall is how the right people seemed to appear at just the right moment. I’d talk about this strange wall that grew food, and somehow, it would inspire others to help out or introduce me to someone new. There was a little bit of magic in those moments.”
Lastly,
I asked Geert what are your plans for the future?
“Looking forward, our vision is to bring Farmwall into every office floor that has a communal kitchen, to personalise the wellbeing journey of each staff member and help them build a stronger relationship with food. We believe that by first experiencing the benefits to body and mind, people can then begin to see how growing their own food, whether at home or at work, can boost resilience, connection, and happiness. It’s a catalyst for wellbeing, and it brings people together in such a beautiful way.
Farmwall is an innovative system developed right here in Melbourne, and we’re excited to keep pushing boundaries as we help shape the future of urban food.”
Farmwall exemplifies how innovative thinking and community engagement can redefine urban living. I am so pleased I have been part of Geerts and Farmwall’s journey.

afgeleverd waren altijd nattig. Gemorste melk, lekkende pakjes.

The launch day was a great success and very well set up by VMCH Providence Bacchus Marsh - Margaret West.
We had 80 people attend including the CEO of VMCH and local representatives. Margaret West opened the day with a welcome to all guests, residents and dignitaries. Special welcome to Anthony & Sheryl Tesselaar representing the Tesselaar family. Mr Jos Mangelsdorf presented a history of the Dutch connections and the efforts of the many for the special cause of providing a safe refuge for families of Dutch migrants who had nowhere else to go and were desperate for their families to be fed and have accommodation during the hard times n the 50’s & 60’s. Highlighting the vision and hard work of Fr Maas and Mrs Seegers. Andrew Schoenmaekers, on behalf of the co author Veronica and major contributions by Truus Schoenmaekers, Martin & Magda Westeinde, was able to pick up on the continued support that was recognised by the many members of the Dutch communities and related businesses over the 60 years. Their tireless and generous support enabled the Providence Village to grow and transform as was needed.
Funding for the completion of the book was through a Go Fund me programme and generous support of Martin & Magda, Truus Schoenmaekers, Andrew and Veronica Schoenmaekers to enable the successful completion of the book over 4 years.
Publishers Garratt Publishing in Mulgrave were extremely supportive and generous providing the editorial, proofreading, typesetting and publishing as well as continued directions to complete the book.
The books were donated to the Village and sold with all sales proceeds going to the Providence Village general fund to enable support to the current residents.
Best regards,
Andrew Schoenmaekers

Rotterdam Centraal.”
Ik schrik op. Nu al? Pak alles snel in, grijp m’n tas. Spring eruit.
Iemand belt. Iemand typt. Mijn gitaar is gevonden.

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz has told the Telegraaf newspaper that she will not work again with the far right PVV and its leader Geert Wilders.
Yesilgöz told the paper in an interview that Wilders is “an unbelievably untrustworthy partner” and that the Netherlands merits “adult leadership”.
“We are not going to work with him again,” she said.
The Dutch cabinet collapsed over a week ago and until now Yesilgöz has refused to say if she would form a coalition again with Wilders. He pulled the plug on the four-party alliance after the other three party leaders refused to sign his 10-point plan to reduce immigration. Ease of the pedals
Fast cycling
While fast cycling may be on the rise, Amsterdam officials are urging cyclists to ease off the pedals in the city’s green spaces. Around 62% of residents cycle to work.
“Parks should be places where people can find peace,” city transport chief Melanie van der Horst told the Parool. “So we are starting a campaign to bring some calm back into traffic.”
The campaign includes electronic signs asking cyclists to slow down in the city’s Vondelpark and Rembrandtpark — a measure the Dutch cyclists’ union Fietsersbond doubts will make much difference. Measurements will be taken after the summer to see if the signs have had an impact. Meanwhile, Van der Horst told the paper she would prefer an official speed limit of 20 kph, but said this would require both government approval and funding for enforcement.
Criminal court lost access
The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague has lost access to his email and his bank accounts have been frozen because of US sanctions, news agency AP reported on.
The agency said the court’s US staff have also been told they could be arrested if they travel back home, and that some non-governmental agencies have stopped working with the ICC because of the risk.
Legislation adopted by the US in January imposed sanctions
on court staff if Americans and officials from allied countries, including Israel, are investigated. The US is not a member of the court.
Tens of thousands march through The Hague.
Tens of thousands of people marched through the centre of The Hague to protest against the right-wing cabinet’s position on Israel and the war in Gaza. The organisers called on the Dutch government to take concrete action to stop Israel’s continued violations of international humanitarian law.
Many of the demonstrators wore red clothing to symbolically draw a “red line”, which they say is something the government had previously refused to do.
The protest organisers estimated attendance at more than 100,000 people, calling it the largest demonstration in the Netherlands in the past 20 years. Police said the protest passed peacefully but declined to give an official crowd estimate.
RTL reporter Ruben Leter said the demonstrations came from a wide cross section of the population. “There were a lot of older people and families with children,” he said. “It was also a whiter crowd than at most pro-Palestine demonstrations.”
Actress Carice van Houten was among the crowd. “If politicians won’t drawn a line, then we, as ordinary citizens, will have to do so,” she told RTL.
The march started at the Malieveld close to the parliamentary complex and ended at the Peace Palace, where the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is based.
The court is currently hearing a genocide case against Israel and in a provisional ruling last year, the ICJ ordered Israel to take measures to protect civilians in Gaza and to allow humanitarian aid into the area. Israel has not complied with that ruling.
The protest was organised by a broad coalition of aid and human rights organisations and pro-Palestinian groups, including Amnesty International, Médecins Sans Frontières, Save the Children, Pax, Oxfam Novib, The Rights Forum and Plant een Olijfboom.
Last week, Dutch foreign affairs minister Caspar Veldkamp accused Israel of breaching hu-
man rights laws with its plan to permanently occupy the Gaza region. Veldkamp wrote in a letter to the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas,
that Israel’s blockade of Gaza breached the terms of its free trade agreement with the EU. Support for Israel’s attacks on Gaza is falling in the Netherlands, with two-thirds of people now describing the most recent bombing as “out of all proportion” and 77% condemning the aid blockade, according to the latest RTL opinion poll.
There have been a record 37 “very sunny” days so far this spring, making 2025 the sunniest spring on record, according to weather bureau Weeronline.
The previous record — 36 days with at least 80% sunshine — was set in 2020. With spring continuing until the end of May and more sunshine forecast, that record is likely to stretch even further, Weeronline said.
The record for total hours of sunshine, also set in 2020, is also expected to be broken before the end of the month.
The contrast with last year is stark. In 2024, there were just three “very sunny” days between March and the end of May, Weeronline said.
Special trained dogs to Israel
The Netherlands continues to export specially trained dogs to Israel, despite growing pressure to restrict the trade due to concerns about their use by the Israeli military in human rights abuses, Nieuwsuur reported on Monday.
The issue has taken on renewed urgency following the war in Gaza and escalating violence in the West Bank and calls are mounting for tighter political control over the export of service dogs.
At the moment, service dogs are treated the same as pets under export regulations. By contrast, military goods and so-called dual-use items — such as chips or chemicals with both civilian and military applications — are subject to
New guidelines for kids and phones
The caretaker cabinet will on Tuesday publish new guidelines on the use of social media by children, including a recommendation that children should not be given a mobile phone until their final year of primary school.
Broadcaster RTL Nieuws said the plans will be presented on Tuesday and will take the form of guidelines rather than draft legislation.
Parents, academics and a majority of MPs have urged the government to take action on children’s use of social media and mobile phones amid growing concerns about the impact on their education and mental health.
Artus Quellinus (1609-1668)
Despite being feted as Amsterdam’s foremost sculptor, and in his own day a major artistic influence across Northern Europe, Artus Quellinus (1609-1668) is barely known even in the Netherlands.
But now the first-ever retrospective of his work, to be opened this week by king Willem Alexander, aims to change that, and to restore him to his place in history.
The show is being held at the royal palace on Dam Square, already dripping with thousands of his marble and bronze sculptures, now swelled by more than 100 additional pieces on loan.
The building, originally the city’s town hall, was Quellinus’s opus magnum, after he worked closely with its architect, Jacob van Campen, to create
a visual feast so magnificent it was regarded as the eighth wonder of the world.
Wolves
More wolves have been detected in the Netherlands but the number of packs appears to be levelling off, according to the organisation set up to monitor them.
BIJ12 recorded 85 different wolves through DNA tracking between October last year and February, 41 of them for the first time.
The cross-provincial authority said most of the new wolves were cubs from the 11 existing wolf packs. That number is unchanged since last year.
Reaction of Dutch cabinet about Israels attacks
The Dutch cabinet has expressed regret over Israel’s overnight attacks on Iran, with prime minister Dick Schoof describing them as “alarming” and urging everyone involved to “maintain calm and refrain from further attacks and reprisals.”
Acting foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp called for “maximum constraint” and said he had spoken to his counterparts in Israel and Iran and called for a swift return to negotiations aimed at “sustainable stability”.
“We regret that Israel felt compelled to initiate this military action,” Veldkamp said, referring to the overnight attacks targeting Iranian military leadership and nuclear facilities. He added that the Dutch government does not know what specific information prompted Israel’s actions.

Concept is hartstikke simpel!

Almost 10 years ago now, my granddaughter Kim married the love of her live, in Orange NSW.
A lot of stress and emotions before the big event could take place. The wedding was rescheduled a couple of times, because Kim’s fiancé Ben was dying of cancer. He was a very loved and wellknown person in Orange. A champion cage boxer. The medical situation was so bad, that Ben just wanted to marry his Kim without friends and family. Kim did not want to deny the family to witness her marrying Ben and begged him to let the family be there. He agreed on the condition that nobody would show that they were sorry for him being so sick. It had to be a happy event.
The evening before the wedding Ben ended up in hospital again and had a stent put in his liver to stop the tumors from spreading. The doctor had advised him to get married on ‘that’ day because that was between chemo treatment and he would still have his hair. Yes, Ben wanted to look great for the big day. We had to wait till 9.20 in the morning to find out that the wedding could go on. They got married in the afternoon and when Ben stepped out of the car I was shocked to see how sick he looked, but everyone put on a brave face. On June 23 in a winery in Orange they made the big promise.
When it came to speeches, I was the Oma who had a speech ready for them. No mentioning of anything sad. They were happily married for just under three months and everyone was there again to support Kim on the funeral of Ben.
Oma’s speech; A Brief History of Orange
Situated on Blackman’s Swamp Creek, Orange was proclaimed a village in 1846. The area had previously been known as Blackman’s Swamp Creek. Major Thomas Mitchell named the village in honour of Prince William of Orange whom he met during the Napoleonic Wars early 1800. Prince William became the King of Holland in 1815.
He proclaimed himself the King. Sometimes you just have to do things yourself. Orange (this town we are in now) has a male choir that was formed in 1926 One of the names they went by is ‘the Rowland Gregory Orpheus Singers’ But since they change the name to The Orange Choir the fame raised. They sang at many mayor events dressed in Orange jackets. But wait there is a connection For many years they performed on the stage with Kim’s Opa and his choir. Melbourne, Bathurst. Canberra, they been everywhere. In 2014 on the stage with Opa Joosten as part of the 412 Male voice choir. They sang their hearts out to raise funds for SOLDIER ON. Now we know the connection between Orange here and Orange in Holland. When it comes to showing of a winner, we as fans of Orange of course wear Orange clothes. A shirt or scarf is never out of place.
As you know; Orange is now the new black.
As our children and grandchildren grew up it was normal to have an Orange shirt as a back-up, just in case there is a special sport or other event. When Kim was in primary school at one time the choice for mufti-day was: everybody wear something Orange. One of Kim’s friends dared to say; miss I have nothing in Orange. So, Kim was flabbergasted and said; that’s weird cause my cupboard is full of it!!!!!
At one stage in her life Kim was in a children’s choir and they wore Orange shirts. One size fits all. They were extra-large so for little Kim it was a coverall, her hands and feet sticking out from this huge Orange thing!
And then Kim moved to Molong. And question like; where in the hell is Molong. Well it is near Orange. So the next step, Kim moved in with Ben… in Orange, and both of you managed to get us all here today.
All the way from Holland come best wishes for Kim and Ben on this special day.
Just for Ben; you have gained a big family mate.
My 7 brothers and their other halves, they are your great uncles. Opa’s 3 sisters and 3 brothers and their better halves. More great uncles and aunties. Then you’ve also gained 22 second cousins and 21 third cousins That’s over 60 family members, because you married Kim.
Congratulations from Opa and Oma.
I bit long bit every word needed to be sad.
Groetjes Mia
Daar is de SRV-man!
down, exactly how he died and when he exactly died. Nonetheless, he was buried on 11th October, 1621 in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Amsterdam. (City archives of Amsterdam). The last twist is the most cryptic. That his remains were later removed to a communal grave field outside the city. Why would that be? This man’s life is full of question marks and that is why I call him the “elusive Dirk Hartog’. Nevertheless, we can thank him for leaving his definite footprint, as the man who discovered this part of Australia in 1616 and it was said that “the Dutch East India Company were delighted’ in his accidental discovery as now they would have a “definite landmark. So amended orders, were issued that in future they were to sail direct from
the Cape to Eendrachtsland and then turn north to their destination”

Acclaimed Dutch theatre makers, Maas Theatre En Dans are arriving at the Opera House for BullyBully (6 - 12 July), the show that is helping parents and kids make sense of this world, together.
This production is a hilariously insightful show for ages 3+ that tackles big, tricky questions about global politics through clowning, physical comedy and laugh-out-loud mayhem. The show is also entirely non-verbal, making it accessible to audiences of all language backgrounds and abilities.
This isn’t just a kids’ show, it’s a thought-provoking look into how we treat one another and what happens when power goes unchecked, opening the door to conversations many parents are already having, or want to start, in an increasingly complex world.

Stir the mixture and boil until the liquid has been absorbed by the rice. Remove.
- Heat 5 Tbs ghee in a wok, fry the pounded spice-paste until fragrant. Add the lamb, grated nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and lemon grass. Stir until everything is well-blended. Add water and boil until water has evaporated and the meat is tender.
- Mix the lamb into the rice and put everything into a steamer.
- Steam until the rice is done, about 50 minutes.
Zuiderkruis trip

I just got home from my Cruise and was reading the Dutch courier news .page 6 what a surprise I got to read about Providence village my two jonger sisters used to work there in the 1950 and I myself looked after some off the children in the holiday time and so did our parents it was a lot off fun .
So here my story about my travel with the Zuiderkruis.
Zuiderkruis
We left our little village on the 17 October 1959 to begin on our journey we never heard off but we were all together and it was going to be fun the food was good, but not the same as at home my dad was a very good chef, but we tolerated it otherwise we would starve.
We had three stops on the way but didn’t go off the boat as our parents wouldn’t let us as they were to scared we might get lost. Our last stop was Port Said maybe I spelt that wrong but you know the Suez Canal as we were the last one to go through that part they had to travel on the Panema canal.
My mum was very seasick all through the journey witch wasn’t fun for her . We felt sad for her and she couldn’t join in the fun.
My five older brothers had to sleep in their domain with all

Dank u, juf! Dank u, meester!
Jongensweeshuis in Tilburg.

Omdat mijn wieg joods was
gathering, her question was, are there any children here from Amsterdam? I would love to find out if they live in Australia. Constance only found one boy in England for whom she had cared. No one in the big crowd had been in the orphanage. I said tat I lived in Amsterdam as an infant and toddler and had survived two concentration camps. I spoke to Constance for about two minutes, she said: “I would love to hear your story, come and visit me.” One part was never clear to me: How i
Constance and Ina
About five years ago I was invited to a gathering of Dutch Jewish people at the Holocaust museum in Elsterwich, Victoria. The idea was to tell your story about how you survived the war. What really happened to you and your family members and what your hiding place was like. Several people got up ad spoke about the horrors they had endured. I, being a survivor of two concentration camps, Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen, was given five minutes to tell my story. A lady named Constance KosterFernhout saved hundreds of small children during the war. Close to ninety years old and very bright, she became the focal point with her amazing experiences. For many years she had kept quiet with what she had gone through. She was plagued by war traumas after the war. She worked with orphaned children and babies and smuggeled them to safe places at the orphanage behind the Schouwburg in Amsterdam. During that
got to be with my foster parents as I was confused about the orphanage in Westerbork. It was a moving afternoon and I gave it not more thought. A good there years ago my story was filmed in Westerbork in the Netherlands, and at the Holocaust museum in Elsternwich, Victoria. Henry Korn and his wife Sandra kept in touch with Contstacne telling her my life story. Could I come along one day to talk to her, she remembers you and would like to see you. It was arranged to give me a lift and I had to take relevant photos and information for her. We met again and of course she wanted to know my name, as her memory was and still is excellent. She had memorised every child’s name. After the war I was simply Ina Krant. I had different names during the war, but I forgot to mention them to Constance. Krant is my maiden name. That name did NOT ring a bell. She kept looking at one of the photos saying. I know that child, I picked her up somewhere in the winter early 1943 in the Vrolik street, the only baby there.
What a name for that street, all the Jewish people were gone. But the name is wrong. It was a double name, now she kept on saying: dddd and again ddd, and becoming upset at not remembering the name. I said to her that it could be my story, a man had given me away too. I lived in the Vrolik street as well till I was eleven months old. It is that child for sure, I remember the curl on her forehead, she had a double name. Then she became intensively nervous for not remembering, but she was very sure that she picked me up, the only baby in the street. All of a sudden I said; “De Levie”? The look of shock on her face was unbelievable. Constance became pale and began to shake and could not speak for a minute, then she said, yes, yes that was the name, why did you say Krant?
During the war I had several names but that time it was Ina de Levie. All the pieces of the puzzle came together, as there had been one piece missing. My brother Loek knew all along as he had asked my foster parents how his sister arrived with them. Many time my foster parents brought up the fact. We got you from the orphanage, I said, that was Westerbork, you are mixed up. Constance knew all the facts, that she picked me up from that man, hid me under her Scottish coat and smuggled met to safety. The detais are 1oo % correct. I love that beautiful gracious lady, she saved me from being left behind in a porch wrapped in a blanket, to bring me to the orphanage and looked after me for eight days. I love you Constance. We see eacher other from time to time , she is now nearly niniety-five years old, very frail, but her memory and spirit are still there. Then to know how many years we wasted. We only live 45 minutes away from eachother.

Player Profile and Transfers
Tijjani Reijnders has been voted as the best midfielder in Serie A for the 2024/2025 season. After his recent £46.5 million transfer from AC Milan to Manchester City, Reijnders joined his Netherlands teammate, Nathan Ake, to make his debut against Wyad Casablanca in the FIFA World Club Cup (19th June). Reijnders looked comfortable orchestrating City’s play. It was only later in the game that he was able to inject himself into the attack in their 2-0 win.
Nathan Ake missed most of last season through injury, but he looked in great physical shape. He started the movement that led to the first goal and narrowly missed with a strong header. He defended well and has returned to the Dutch team in the game against Finland.
Jeremie Frimpong has transferred from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool signing a five-year contract joining fellow Dutch internationals Van Dijk, Gakpo and Gravenberch.
Amazing statistics of Ryan Gravenberch – He has three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, one Bundesliga title with Bayern and one Premier League title with Liverpool. He has FIVE titles and is only 22 years old and was recently voted the best young
player aged 23 or younger of the EPL.
31-Year-old Dutch international goalkeeper, Mark Flekken, completed his move from Brentford to Bayer Leverkusen for €10 million.
Feyenoord have pulled off a coup signing Xavi Simons from Bayer Leverkusen and the Eredivisie player of the year and top scorer, Sem Steijn from AZ.
AZ Alkmaar defeat Twente 3-2 to seal European spot
Twente led 2-0 for most of the first half and looked to be cruising to victory. They began well and were rewarded with a penalty in the 22nd minute after some clever play by Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Sem Steijn calmly converted. Steijn has recently signed for Feyenoord for a club record fee.
Although Steijn score his second in the 40th minute, Alkmaar’s Mexx Meerdink quickly pulled one back before the break with a fierce strike.
There was some controversy just before the break when Van Wolfswinkel was lucky to avoid a red card as VAR recommended referee Serdar Gözübüyük to review the original decision of a yellow for a rash challenge on Alexandre

Penetra. However, referee Gözübüyük stuck to his original decision and the striker stayed on.
AZ was a different team when they came in the second half. They lifted their tempo and Meerdink although missed a good chance, a Ruben van Bommel strike made it 2-2. The 20-year-old left-winger cut inside before sending a strike past Przemyslaw Tyton from outside the box. The young Dutch international U/21 striker is attracting a lot of attention especially from Bayern Munich, a club his father, Mark, played for.
Both sides had big chances to win the game which was heading for extra time. However, in the last seconds, Irish international Troy Parrott forced Tyton into a save but he could only push the ball into the path of Ibrahim Sadiq, who scored the winner. AZ Alkmaar now enters the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
PSV, Ajax, Feyenoord will be the Champions League Eredivisie representatives in Europe next season. Go Ahead Eagles, and FC Utrecht, will play in the Europa League.

the first leg, they defeated Willem II 3-1 in the return match at Tilburg. Telstar got off to the perfect start and they found themselves 2-0 up by the 12th minute. Mees Kaandorp opened the scoring before Youseff El Kachati raced in on goal to quickly score a second.
Willem II can claim the football gods were against them. After Rob Nizet gave them hope scoring in the 17th minute, they looked to have equalised but for a desperate clearance off the line. Willem pushed for an equaliser but in the 58th minute, Kaandorp got his second of the game to seal the win for Telstar. It is the first time since the 1978 season that Telstar will play in the topflight in the Netherlands. Willem II are relegated.
Telstar is based in the town of Velsen-Zuid, near Haarlem, North Holland. Their promotion is all the more remarkable given the size of the town and their 3,625-seater Sportpark Schoonenberg ‘Stadion’. It is the first time that they have gained promotion to the Eredivisie since 1978. 30-year-old Ronald Koeman junior is the club’s goalkeeper.
Ajax have confirmed John Heitinga and Marcel Keizer as their coaching duo to replace Francesco Farioli. Heitinga and Keizer have signed two-year deals. Heitinga will act as head coach.

Both worked together in a similar role in charge of Jong Ajax before Heitinga stepped up to act as interim head coach of Ajax. He then left after Sven Mislintat was appointed as director of football. Keizer was previously head coach of Ajax in 2017 but was fired and replaced by Erik ten Hag who will become coach of Bayer Leverkusen from July 2025. John Heitinga was most recently an assistant to Arne Slot with Liverpool. He has explained his decision to leave Liverpool for Ajax as having ‘become more complete’ during his time with Arne Slot. Having spent 18 years as a player with Ajax, it was hardly a surprise that he would jump at the chance to become head coach of Ajax.
