Er gebeurde afgelopen maand van alles.

De Leeuwin (prachtig replica schip) werd geramt door een containerschip in West Australia.

De Stichting Nederlanders

Buiten Nederland organiseerde een panel discussie in Den Haag in Nederland waar “onze Nicolien van Vroonhoven” ( Zij schreef ook in de Dutch Courier ) aanwezig was. Ze was daar als politicus voor NSC en moeder die in Australie heeft gewoond.

Ook werd tijdens dit panel door Paternotte (D66) en Nicolien(NSC) toegegeven dat een dubbele nationaliteit wenselijk is. Ook werd er besproken hoe belangrijk Nederlands onderwijs nodig is. Dit vooral voor terugkomende Nederlanders. De kinderen van Nicolien moeten nu helaas naar een internationale school en hebben de aansluiting met het Nederlands onderwijs mis gelopen. Waar ze gigantisch van baalt. Ook had ik Norman Jansen gewaarschuwd dat dit panelgesprek er zou zijn in Den Haag. Hij heeft namelijk een boek geschreven over re migratie. Hij werd door de journalist Janneke Juffermans vakkundig in de discussie betrokken. Ook weer een artikel van hem in deze krant. Het was goed om te zien dat er veel Australische Nederlanders in de zaal zaten met deze bijzondere dag. Deze waren welliswaar toevallig in Nederland, maar de vragen en opmerkingen uit de zaal waren zo relevant voor de Nederlanders in Australie dat het ook leuk is om deze opname op onze website te zetten.

An agreement has been reached between the two clubs for “mutually beneficial exchange” which will see the A-League club have greater access to overseas talent and allow talented Adelaide youth players a pathway to Europe.

The Reds chairman, Ned Morris, sealed the deal on a recent trip to Eindhoven. PSV will allow promising youth players the opportunity to train at PSV’s Campus De Herdgang while the coaching staff will benefit from the PSV coaching academy. This will give the players unprecedented exposure and invaluable experience.

Adelaide hope to sign or loan European players through the extensive PSVs network of transfers and loan targets.

Ernest Faber, Head of Youth Development at PSV, explained the benefits of this collaboration. “The clubs will share expertise and insights on matters such as scouting and youth development. This is also a great commercial opportunity for PSV,” he said in

a statement.

Adelaide United Chairman Ned Morris highlighted the ambition of the club and the significance of this move for the club’s future. “PSV is one of the biggest clubs in the world and has a proven track record of developing some of the most talented players in Europe. On and off the pitch, PSV is achieving great successes,” Morris said in a club statement. “As a club, we are committed to developing young players and giving them opportunities. Being able to apprentice with PSV will certainly have a beneficial effect on Adelaide United’s players and coaches. At the same time, we know we are doing a lot of things very well in the A-League and will try to share our football vision and operational knowledge with PSV’s.”

Australians who have played for PSV include Jason Culina, Archie Thompson, Trent Sainsbury and Aziz Behich.

30 Augustus kregen we op de redactie een berichtje binnen van Elly Spillekom. Oh nee wat erg, vreselijk nieuws de Leeuwin is geraakt door container schip en 2 crew members zijn gewond.

Wat blijkt nou een groot container schip had de leeuwin geramd met draaien in de haven.

Het schip was net opgeknapt om weer te starten met het trainen van jongeren en dat ze kon zeilen rond WA. Het was groot nieuws niet lang daarna. opgepakt door de media in WA.

Zeer gewaardeerde panelleden, aanwezigen in de zaal, en al die vele Nederlanders binnen en buiten Nederland die er online bij zijn vandaag – welkom! Waarbij ik graag wil opmerken dat het extra bijzonder is dat Nicolien van Vroonhoven van Nieuw Sociaal Contract hier is: ze was namelijk zelf ook vrijwilliger bij de Stichting Nederlanders Buiten Nederland, toen ze nog in Australie woonde. Fijn dat je er bij bent!

Mijn naam is Eelco Keij, Nederlander en Amerikaan, voorzitter en mede-oprichter van de Stichting Nederlanders Buiten Nederland, in het dagelijks leven fondsenwerver voor Wereldnatuurfonds Verenigde Staten, in Washington DC.

2024 is een bijzonder jaar voor de naar schattingruim 1 miljoen Nederlanders in het buitenland. Ten eerste viert de belangenorganisatie Stichting Nederlanders Buiten Nederland haar eerste lustrum, opgericht in 2019. Ten tweede, en daarvoor zijn we hier vandaag bijeengekomen, markeert 2024 het jaar waarin we de Dag van de Nederlanders buiten Nederland uitroepen, een dag waarbij we de meerwaarde van en de band met

Nederlanders in het buitenland erkennen en vieren.

Wat leidde nu precies tot de oprichting van de SNBN? Dit is een proces van bewustwording geweest, met meerdere scharniermomenten van voor 2019. Laat ik er 3 uitlichten.

Het eerste moment is in 2011, wanneer er een wetsvoorstel komt, dat het volledig onmogelijk wil maken om dubbele nationaliteit te hebben. Nu mocht dat al niet, en nog steeds niet, maar er bestonden uitzonderingen – en die zouden met dit wetsvoorstel ook afgeschaft worden. De adhoc actiegroep Nederlander Blijven zet een petitie op, die wereldwijd meer dan 25000 x wordt ondertekend. Veel media. Het wetsvoorstel haalt het niet. En Nederlanders in het buitenland staan voor het eerst versteld van hun eigen kracht.

Een volgend scharniermoment in de bewustwording was het kort geding dat een grote groep Nederlanders in 2017 aanspande tegen de Staat der Nederlanden vanwege het niet-aankomen van stembiljetten in het buitenland. Juridisch verloren we, maar politiek kwam het signaal duidelijk over. De stemsituatie is inmiddels beter, maar stemmen vanuit het buitenland blijft voor velen nog steeds een lastig proces. Wat wel opnieuw duidelijk werd: als we druk zetten, worden we gehoord en volgen vaakstapsgewijze verbeteringen.

Een ander markant moment in de bewustwording: het op het allerlaatste, maar dan ook echt allerlaatste mo-

ment tegenhouden van het wetsvoorstel dat naturalisatie vanuit het buitenland zou bemoeilijken. Dit speelde in 2017. In een heuse politieke thriller veranderde een kleine partij net voor de finale stemming in de Senaat van mening, waarmee uiteindelijk de definitieve blokkade gevormd werd. Hierachter zat een intensieve lobby van honderden Nederlanders die lange brieven schreven aan de betreffende senator, en dan allemaal tegelijk(voor de geinteresseerden: dat was Jan Nagel. Op z’n Amerikaans benaderd, hij vroeg of we konden stoppen, het signaal was overgekomen, z’n dochter moest helpen]

Dankzij deze momenten kwam er bewustwording en zelfbewustworden: het besef dat deze lobby structureel ingebed kon worden. In 2019 volgde de grote stap. Een groep van 12 Nederlanders in het buitenland richtte de SNBN op. Het bestuur van de SNBN bestond en bestaat uit leden die bijna allemaal lid zijn van een verschillende politieke partij. Zo houden we de lobby sterk, terwijl we als organisatie politiek-neutraal blijven. Ook zijn we financieel onafhankelijk van de overheid en bedrijven, dankzij een continue stroom van kleine en grote giften van Nederlanders binnen en buiten Nederland. Inmiddels kent de SNBN ruim 100 vrijwilligers van over de hele wereld. Dit is puur liefdewerk. We kennen geen reisvergoedingen, en als we koffie met een Tweede Kamerliddrinken, betalen we dat uit eigen zak, en niet uit de donatiepot. Zo houden we het zuiver, naar onszelf, naar

and were indeed not ready to parley, but determined on wounding or killing. Janszoon ordered his men to ‘fire one or two shots to frighten them’ (Mutch) . One of the natives was hit, but the others retired into the sand dunes. The Dutchmen searched their huts, but found nothing but assegais, stones and human bones with which they made their weapons. They sailed further along and put up a building at the place that was afterwards called Cape Keerweer. Here they had an entirely different reception from the natives of these parts, according to a book written by members of the Wik-Mungkan people, who today live in outstations and in the Aurukun Mission station. This account of the Europeans’ landing has been passed down in Aboriginal oral history.

According to this narrative, the natives were friendly to the Dutch, at first. In it is recorded

They allowed them to sink a well and put up huts. They were at first happy there and worked together The Europeans gave them tobacco. They carried off the tobacco. They gave them flour -they threw that away. They gave them soap and they threw away the soap. The Keerweer people kept to their own bush tucker.

Then, according to this story, the Dutch started to misbehave and carried some of the Aboriginal women away and forced their men to hunt for them. This, naturally, incensed the Aborigines and a fight broke out, leading the local natives to kill some of the Dutch and burn some of their boats. The Dutch retaliated by shooting dead many of the Keerweer people before escaping.

This version is not compatible with the records of the Dutch, as in their annals all that is written is that Janszoon found

In 2016 a small Holland Festival was organised on the Gold Coast by local resident Martien Jansen in de Wal. Via advertisements in the newspapers, he had found a number of other Dutch locals to help him. After the event was over, the volunteers decided to maintain their Dutch connections by meeting once a month for lunch in Coolangatta.

At the time I was living in ACT and was involved only as a remote advisor to Martien, but after I moved to Queensland and started to get familiar with the roads there, I decided to join the group at lunch. In this way I met about ten Dutchies that were all retired and living in the region. One of them, who agreed to be interviewed by me, is Florence van Bossum.

Florence Claudine Harnas (Flos) was born in Surabaya (Dutch East Indies or DEI) in 1929. Her father was Hans Harnas, born in Gorkum, Netherlands, in 1890, and her mother was Nettie de la Rive Box, who was born in Salatiga, Java, in 1901. Flos had two older brothers, Rob, born in 1922 and Bas, born in 1924. Flos went to primary school in Malang (East Java), till in 1942 the Japanese invaded. Her father had retired from his managing director job with an insurance company in 1939. He was the first one taken prisoner, only a few days after the Japanese entered Malang, to be put in three-month solitary confinement in a proper prison, as he had been in charge as a Dutch officer in the demolition corps. That day, when they picked him up from our home, the Japanese also took possession of our house and we were homeless.

Flos and her mother were first placed in a Japanese suburb camp in Malang, thereafter in a camp in Solo, and finally in Halmahera. Her 18-year-old brother Bas went into another camp in Java. Brother Rob spent the war years in Deventer, Netherlands, where he had moved in 1939 to study agriculture.

After the end of WW2, in 1945, it took about half-a-year for all the family members to reunite in Singapore, and in 1946 they all moved to Netherlands. Flos finished studies at the HBS in Amsterdam and then became a chemical analyst. She worked at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek institute in Amsterdam, where

she did cancer research.

In 1946, in a tram on the way to school, Flos met Kees van Bossum who also had grown up in DEI. They married by proxy in 1952, as Kees had already gone back to what was now Indonesia. Later that same year Flos also moved back to Indonesia, where she went to work as an analyst for Shell. The situation in Indonesia in the early 50s was not at all what they had expected, and in 1955 Kees was made redundant in his job. They didn’t want to go back to the cold weather in Netherlands. Both her brothers, Bas and Rob, who had married in Netherlands and moved to Australia with their wives and children, told them to come to Australia also, and in March 1955 Flos and Kees moved to Sydney.

The first year they lived with brother Bas in Meadowbank, Sydney. Flos got a job, again in cancer research, at Sydney University, where she worked for five years. Kees was a salesman of photographic equipment in Netherlands and in DEI, and he started work in the same line in Sydney. He didn’t feel very secure working in this job, and eventually he went to work for a brewery, later for other industries, and finally he went to do office work. After one year living with brother Bas and his family, Flos and Kees bought their own home in Ryde. In 1959 their first daughter, Jennifer, was born, and Flos left the university job. Their second daughter, Caroline, was born in 1967.

In 1971, when Caroline was four years old, the family moved into a larger home which they had built in Westleigh. Soon after this Kees lost his job, and Flos found a job working in a nursing home in Wahroonga as a nursing assistant. Flos increased her working hours until Kees had found a new job.

Over the years the marriage developed serious problems and after 30 years of marriage Kees and Flos divorced in 1987. Jennifer had already married and moved out in 1980, but Caroline continued living in the house in Westleigh with Flos.

Flos’ parents, Hans and Nettie, had remained in Netherlands but visited their offspring in Australia every few years. During such a visit in 1966, Hans died of a stroke and was buried in Sydney. Nettie returned to Netherlands and continued to live in The Hague, until in 1988, when aged 87, she migrated to Sydney to live with Florence.

Both Flos’s brothers had already died of heart attacks, Bas in 1977 and Rob during a visit from Brisbane to

Sydney in 1988. Oma Nettie died in Australia six years later, in 1994. Hans, Bas, Rob and Nettie are all buried in a family grave in Ryde cemetery.

In 1994, after Oma Nettie died, Caroline got married. Soon after that Caroline, her husband, Chris, and their new baby, came to live with Flos, until Flos left in 2002, to go live in Tweed Heads.

Florence had worked at the nursing home till 1992, when she stayed home to care full-time for her elderly mother. When Flos decided it was time to move, she sold the house to Caroline and Chris, and moved to a townhouse unit in Tweed Heads. It is one street away from Coolangatta, Queensland, as the cities of Gold Coast and Tweed Heads have very winding borders in this area. Flos chose Qld at the advice of her GP who recommended it for her arthritis. She was already familiar with the area from many visits to her brother Rob and his family. Over the years Flos visited Holland many times to see her mother. In 1963 Kees won £5,000in the Opera House Lottery, and the whole family travelled to Europe, where they bought Eurail passes and visited many countries. After the kids were married, Flos travelled to many other countries like USA, Turkey, Greece, Spain and Israel.

Flos doesn’t miss Netherlands. She disliked the cold, although she had enjoyed ice-skating, and the cozy (gezellige) atmosphere in winter in the homes. She doesn’t really eat Dutch food, although she did visit the Dutch shop and Club in Sydney. As a family they used to celebrate Sinterklaas and New Year’s Eve in the Dutch tradition.

At 95 Flos still dri ves, but only in her neighbourhood. In earlier years in Queensland, she would drive to Prins Willem Alexander Village in Birkdale, to attend the monthly Indonesian lunch, and also the annual April Fest. Flos had joined Martien’s volunteer group for the 2016 Holland Festival in Tweed Heads, and in spite of some aging issues, she still meets the group for monthly lunch in Coolangatta.

Flos says she feels totally accepted in Australia, she attends church and is a big fan of rugby league (see photo). She also has an innate curiosity to learn and do research. She still has a computer which, in spite of some vision problems, she puts to good use. She enjoys visits from relatives. She has seven grandkids and eight great-grandkids, plus the nephews and nieces from her brothers. She is happy in Australia.

Het lied “15 Miljoen Mensen” hielp me altijd onthouden hoeveel mensen in Nederland woonden. Maar sinds 15 augustus 2024 is, volgens het CBS, de grens van 18 miljoen inwoners bereikt. Misschien is het tijd voor een remake van het lied, dat in 1996 werd opgenomen door Fluitsma & Van Tijn met tekst van reclamemaker Frank Pels.

Gerard Kramer merkte op dat de bevolking in een mensenleven (80 jaar) is verdubbeld, als reactie op een artikel van DutchNews.nl die ook berichten op de mijlpaal van 15 miljoen mensen.

De groei komt volgens het CBS door de uitbreiding van de EU wat vrijere beweiging betekend, de economische situatie en de Engelse taal op de universiteit alsmede die oorlog in Syrie en Ukraine Online ontstaat er veel discussie over de vraag of 18

miljoen mensen niet te veel is, en of de maatregelen die genomen worden wel genoeg zijn. Toch verbaas ik me altijd over hoe rustig het is in de provincies, zoals Friesland, Overijssel en Zeeland, als ik in de trein zit en de weilanden aan me voorbij zie gaan. Alles lijkt geconcentreerd op één plek, wat ook te zien is aan de files.

In Australië wonen bijna 26 miljoen mensen op een oppervlakte van 7.692.000 km². Ik dacht ooit dat Australië en Nederland ongeveer hetzelfde aantal inwoners hadden, maar Australië is nu 10 miljoen inwoners voor op Nederland. Australië is weliswaar groot, maar veel van het land is momenteel te droog voor bewoning.

Volgens het Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) woonden er in Australië in 1954 9 miljoen mensen en in 1959 10 miljoen. Australië bereikte 20 miljoen inwoners in 2004, wat betekent dat de bevolking in Australie in 40 jaar is verdubbeld ipv in Nederland in 80 jaar.

Volgens de Census van 2021 heeft Australië 381.946 mensen met een Nederlandse achtergrond, wat 1,5% van

Edwin Jongejans dook als 5-jarig jongetje al van de duikplank. Later werd hij Europeesen Wereldkampioen schoonspringen en ging hij twee keer voor Nederland naar de Olympische Spelen. We belden met Edwin, die nu werkt voor Diving Australia waar hij jong talent coacht.

In augustus zijn we gestart met de nieuwe serie Groeten uit waarin Nederlanders vertellen wat er allemaal te doen is in hun woonplaats en waarom ze zich hier helemaal thuis voelen. Ook delen ze het verhaal achter hun verhuizing naar Australië. Helen Kamphuis uit Bathurst (NSW) beet de spits af. En Herman Umbgrove vertelde over zijn woonplaats Stanley (TAS).

In mei werd Nederland gediskwalificeerd op het Eurovisie Songfestival. Vorige maand maakte het Zweedse

de Australische bevolking vertegenwoordigt. Daarnaast zijn er 66.481 inwoners die in Nederland zijn geboren. Ter vergelijking: de oorspronkelijke bevolking van Australië, de Aboriginals, telde tijdens dezelfde volkstelling 984.000 mensen (3,8 procent van de bevolking).

Twan van Laan, lid van het dagelijks bestuur van de Stichting Nederlanders Buiten Nederland, geeft een verdeling van Nederlanders in het buitenland:

- Afrika: 5%

- Amerika: 19% (waarvan Aruba 2%, Canada 2,3%, Curaçao 4,1%, VS 4,9%)

- Azië: 9% (waarvan Turkije 3,2%)

- Europa: 63% (waarvan België 15,9%, Duitsland 11,4%, Frankrijk 4,2%, Spanje 4,6%, VK 9,2%, Zwitserland 2,1%)

- Oceanië: 4% (waarvan Australië 2,5%)

Als we deze groep zouden meetellen, zouden we eigenlijk 19 miljoen moeten zeggen, maar natuurlijk wonen deze mensen niet in Nederland.

Interessant is dat andere artikelen suggereren dat de groei van de Nederlandse bevolking vooral door migratie komt. Er

komen meer mensen binnen dan er baby’s worden geboren.

Wereldwijd is de groeiende en vergrijzende bevolking, een probleem. We hebben dus ook juist migratie nodig om dit op te vangen. In Australie hebben we daar lijsten voor wie makkelijker binnenkomt. Geen idee of dat in Nederland ook het geval is. Alhoewel het te kort aan woningen natuurlijk een heikel punt is. Toch is Nederland historisch bijzonder innovatief, zowel in de bouw als in het behoud van groen, hoewel ik de boeren nu wel hoor zeggen dat het groen verdwijnt, “Het hele probleem om de stikstof in Nederland gaat niet om stikstof, het gaat om de grond om er huizen op te bouwen.” Hoewel dit niet onwaarschijnlijk klinkt, is het op dit moment nog niet onderzocht. Terugkomend op het liedje “15 Miljoen Mensen”: Ik heb Zing gevraagd om de tekst aan te passen naar “18 Miljoen Mensen” en het opnieuw op te nemen.

Ach ja, dat is wat we nu op korte termijn kunnen veranderen.

OM bekend dat het onderzoek naar Klein is gestopt vanwege gebrek aan bewijs. Songfestivalverslaggever Tim Dekkers had voor ons het laatste nieuws.

Ondanks een trage start kan TeamNL terugkijken op een succesvolle Olympische Spelen in Parijs. In totaal gingen er namelijk 34 medailles mee naar huis, waarvan 15 gouden. Maar wat houden de medaillewinnaars hier financieel eigenlijk aan over? Sportjournalist Jaap de Groot gaf antwoord op deze vraag en uitte forse kritiek op het prijzengeldsysteem.

Tijdens de Spelen in Parijs werd er volop gespeculeerd over het geslacht van boksster Imane Khelif. In Nederland gebeurde in de jaren vijftig iets vergelijkbaars met athlete Foekje Dillema. Huisarts Richard van Hak gaf uitleg over chromosomen en testosteron en de soorten tests die atheleten tegenwoordig ondergaan.

Neerlandia-Sydney bestond afgelopen maand 70 jaar. Verslaggever Jeroen Schouten belde met de voorzitter van de Nederlandse club Gerry Smolders over de festiviteiten rondom het jubileum.

Het was een bijzonder en fraai gezicht toen Clipper Stad Amsterdam de haven van Sydney binnenvoer. Het 76-meter lange zeilschip, dat eruit ziet als een 18e eeuws koopvaardijschip, is momenteel op een 2-jaar durende wereldreis. Wij spraken met kapitein van het schip Andi Manser.

In de 1920’s waren ‘The Ugly Men’ zeer belangrijk voor de lagere en middenklasse van Perth. Ze organiseerden dansavonden en andere sociale evenementen en bouwden huizen voor oorlogsweduwen en anderen in nood. Wie waren die ‘Uglies’ precies en hoe kwamen ze aan hun geld? Het Formule 1 circus streek vorige maand neer in Nederland. In Zandvoort was alle ‘oranje hoop’ gevestigd op Max Verstappen, maar in zijn team loopt het al een tijdje niet zo lekker. Sportjournalist Jaap de Groot vertelde over de kansen van Verstappen en sprak over de toekomst van de Dutch Grand Prix.

De SV Mystic is voor Lucille Ghijbels en partner Tex niet alleen thuis, maar ook hun werkplek. Ze runnen namelijk een goed doel waarmee ze speciale zeiltochten organiseren voor veteranen met PTSS. Een ontspannen dag op het water helpt veel veteranen bij het praten over wat ze hebben meegemaakt, zo vertelde Lucille ons.

Netherlands Water Paternership deed onlangs samen met UNSW een studie naar de Australische watersector. Er werd in kaart

gebracht hoe die sector er precies uitziet, wat de uitdagingen zijn op het gebied van water en waar er voor Nederland kansen liggen om hierbij te helpen. Met Vincent Cornelissen van NWP bespreken we de bevindingen.

Veel mensen denken bij Australië en spinnen aan gevaar. Het nieuws dat de Australische huisspin zich gevestigd heeft in Nederland kreeg dan ook de nodige aandacht. Wij vroegen aan Jinze Noordijk, bioloog bij het EIS Kenniscentrum, hoe de spin in Nederland terecht is gekomen en of het enig gevaar vormt voor de flora en fauna aldaar.

De Leffertjes

Ongelooflijk hoe de Leffertjes het nog steeds doen. Nu 96 en nog steeds volop genieten van het leven. Vandaag tegen het lijf gelopen terwijl ze van een jazzlunch genoten in de Southern Cross Club in Jamison, een bewijs van hun onverminderde levenslust.

Maar velen zijn het misschien niet vergeten, maar degenen die hun nog kennen, herinneren zich nog goed wat ze hebben betekend voor de oude, inmiddels bijna vergeten oude Canberra Dutch Club in Mawson Hun bijdragen waren enorm, een hoeksteen van de gemeenschap in de bloeiperiode.

En laten we niet vergeten dat hij ooit bekendstond als de beste ambulancemedewerker van Canberra.

Het is bijna niet te geloven dat het al meer dan 55 jaar geleden is dat ze voor het eerst

thentic with it, to work with the local communities and let the celebrations bubble up from things that the community is proud about, things that they love.

It also needs patience and starting small, learning and improving together with the community. This builds agency. That is the ability to have an idea, to put it into action, to get support to make it happen and to help shape how it evolves. Ask how we can involve everyone in what it looks like? The kids, the new people to the area, the homeless, the councillors, the employers, the business community, the arts community… how does everyone feel they have a place they belong? Celebrations, especially those that are community-driven,

empower people by giving them a voice in how their spaces evolve. When we gather to celebrate a shared achievement or cultural tradition, we are participating in the creation and development of our environment. This active participation builds confidence, nurtures leadership, and encourages collective decision-making—cornerstones of a strong, self-reliant community.

Look at the olympics, look at the festivals that really thrive, look at the music events, look at the markets. I recently attended the Williamstown (Willy) Lit festival, it was so wonderful to connect to other authors, to share in their journeys about books they have written, to walk through the history of Williamstown,

and to learn about the magic of forest therapy, to have a winter swim and to listen to a children’s book as the constellation whale swam over head, and finally to discuss why the community papers–such as this one–are such a critical part of our community. It was a celebration, it was amazing and I felt such a sense of belonging and joy.

This was truly a celebration that provided opportunities for people to interact, share experiences, and form

The connections formed at these joyful moments create the foundation of trust and cooperation, which is vital for any collaborative effort in placemaking or regenerative development. Recognising and honouring each other’s contributions reinforces the idea that everyone has a place and role within the community. This sense of belonging is essential for the sustainability of any community-driven initiative, encouraging ongoing participation and support.

Times are tough. It is time to focus on our communities, to come together, to celebrate together, to share food and to have those conversations that will help us all be stronger together.

It is curious, in my opinion, that the first episode at Pennefather River on the shores of Cape York does not appear to have been caused by any arguments, but overt hostility from the start on the part of the natives. Also they kept human bones to make weapons, which does not seem to have been the case of the people of Cape Keerweer.

Headhunting was practised by most of the peoples of Melanesia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, so it is possible that these people may have been descendants of Torres Strait Islanders, instead of native inland Aborigines; as

across from Cape York lies the Torres Strait. A missionary once found 10000 skulls on Goaribari Island (off Papua New Guinea). All the islanders were skilled boatmen and it would have been nothing to have rowed across to Australia from New Guinea and settle there. They would have brought all their traditions with them.

There is no other record of Europeans being killed by Australian Aborigines, without just cause. For instance, the Keerweer episode begins with friendliness and because of mistreatment, the natives became hostile. However in the

Pennefather River narrative, the natives were aggressive from the start. So, it is my theory that they were more likely to be descendants of the Torres Strait Islanders than Australian Aborigines who were not known to be headhunters or naturally hostile.

Several members of the Zing! Sing in Dutch singing group entertained the patrons of Mokum cafe recently. Mokum is a Dutch cafe and bar in the heart of Brunswick. There you can experience modern, Amsterdam-inspired flavours in the only dedicated Dutch eatery in Victoria.

Members of Zing! have been having fun singing together in Dutch since 2016. At Mokum people lubricated their vocal chords with Dutch drinks and filled their tummies with Dutch treats as they sang along with fabulous Dutch songs by artists such as Guus Meeuwis, Nick & Simon, Doe Maar, BLØF and Suzan & Freek.

It was a free singing event and songs such as Leef, Leve de vrouw, Het Kleine café aan de haven, Het is een nacht, Zoutelande and Zeven dagen lang were sung with gusto. Audience participation was immense and Albert, the owner of Mokum, is keen to make this a regular event.

Bovendien, zo is inmiddels gebleken: steeds meer Nederlanders buiten Nederland stemmen bij verkiezingen! Inmiddels zijn er al ruim 100.000 NLers geregistreerd – en groeiende. Dat is meer dan een kamerzetel. In het huidige versplinterd politieke klimaat iets om rekening mee te houden.

Dames en heren, ik wil het hebben over de Nederlandse handelsgeest. Want ondernemende Nederlanders in het buitenland – je vindt ze overal, en het mooie is: ze organiseren zich ook onderling, bijvoorbeeld via speciaal opgerichte facebookgroepen, commissies bij Nederlandse Verenigingen of Kamers van Koophandel in het buitenland. Wat levert dit Nederland nu precies op?

Tien jaar geleden deed ik een korte studie, een zoektocht, naar wat de meerwaarde van die Nederlander in het buitenland is – voor Nederland zelf. Op z’n minst is er sprake van correlatie: die landen die

grote groepen Nederlanders herbergen, hebben ook stevige handelsrelaties met Nederland – en bovendien krijgt Nederland veel toeristen uit die landen op bezoek. Vanuit Nederland en de politiek bekeken lijkt het dus verstandig deze mensen te koesteren. En vandaar ook de titel van die studie: Kapitale Connecties.

Hoe kan NL deze connecties en deze band verder inzetten en gebruiken? Iedere keer als ik daarover nadenk, moet ik aan de volgende anekdote denken. Het zal een jaar of 8 geleden zijn, toen ik een presentatie gaf bij de Nederlandse Vereniging in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. [voorbeeld Emirates, verf order, kalender als dank]. Dit is natuurlijk een voorbeeld van hoe het niet moet.

Deze handelsgeest, deze connecties – hoe kan Nederland daar slimmer, vriendelijker gebruik van maken? Natuurlijk: het zou geweldig zijn als er nog meer cijfers bekend zouden zijn over de meerwaarde die Nederlanders buiten Nederland hebben voor Nederland zelf. Ze dragen

immers geen belasting af aan NL, dus daar zul je het niet aan kunnen afleiden. Hoe meet je dat dan? Hiervoor is een grotere, en wetenschappelijke zoektocht nodig. Daarom heeft de SNBN besloten om een studie-opdracht uit te zetten bij 1 of 2 Nederlandse universiteitenwaarmee we momenteel in gesprek zijn, die daarmee aan de slag zullen gaan, om hopelijk volgend jaar met nieuw cijfermateriaal te kunnen komen over deze relatie.

Beste aanwezigen, de Nederlanders buiten Nederland zijn de beste onbetaalde ambassadeurs die we hebben. Vorige week deden we een korte survey uit, richting de achterban, die binnen 2 uur 1500 keer werd ingevuld. En wat blijkt? Mensen voelen zich ambassadeur. Wij promoten Nederland en onze cultuur, zeggen ze. Ze zeggen: omdat ik Nederland altijd met trots beschrijf, worden m’n buren nieuwsgierig en gaan ze op bezoek. Wij stimuleren toerisme en de Nederlandse cultuur!

Daarmee zijn we gekomen op de dag van vandaag, de

Dag van de Nederlanders buiten Nederland - 5 september. Waarom de 5e vanseptember? Eigenlijk om praktische redenen: we wilden geen concurrentie met andere dagen, zoals Wereldaidsdag, en we wilden gelijk aan het begin van elk politiek jaar deze dag benadrukken, ruim voordat de miljoenennota uitlekt.

Hierbij roepen wij, de Stichting Nederlanders Buiten Nederland, de Dag van de Nederlanders buiten Nederland uit. Vandaag zetten we die miljoen medeburgers in het zonnetje, en spreken we onze waardering uit voor hun economische en culturele betrokkenheid met Nederland. Ik wil afsluiten met een quote van de 19e eeuwse Amerikaanse filosoof William James, die zei:

“We zijn als eilanden in de zee, gescheiden aan de oppervlakte maar verbonden in de diepte.”

Het is soms moeilijk te bepalen wanneer je sommige mensen hebt leren kennen. Zeker als je betrokken bent geweest bij grote scouting evenementen, waar zo’n 500 mensen meewerken en zeker 2000 scouts rondlopen! Dus ergens vanaf 1999 heb ik Petra leren kennen. Op een Jamborette in Spaarnwoude. En vanaf dat onbepaalde moment, was ze gewoon iemand die ik eigenlijk altijd al kende!

In de jaren die volgden, kwamen we elkaar vaker tegen. Allebei in het onderwijs. Altijd iets om over te praten.

Vanaf het moment dat ik Sumo werd op de Jamborette (Subkamp-Moeder; een door mij bedachte term, voor de kampstaf van het medewerkersterrein), zagen we elkaar vaker. En als het kamp echt

startte, kwam ze vaak even aanschuiven aan onze tafel. Petra zag en hoorde alles. Als we een zorg hadden om iemand, ging Petra op onderzoek uit. Petra liep iedere tent in, kende iedereen en sprak iedereen aan. Het moest kort, duidelijk en effectief. Heerlijk!

Ze fietste over de velden vol tentjes, zette haar fiets op de standaard en kwam verslag uitbrengen. “Vrouw, luister even,” zei ze dan. En vervolgens kwam het hele verhaal op tafel.

Ooit startte de Jambo tegelijk met een enorme zomerstorm. Tenten werden geëvacueerd, kinderen veiliggesteld in ons restaurant en in de fouragetent. Toen ik toch even uit mijn veilige plek weg moest, keek ik toevallig naar onze restauranttent. Honderden kinderen zaten verkleumd in isolatiedekentjes een warme hap naar binnen te werken. En Petra stond op een tafel bij de ingang de drommen mensen in goede banen te dirigeren. Ik stond met open mond te kijken!

Maar ook op andere gebieden was ze een handige donder. Dan kreeg ik via een appje de

vraag of ik een avondje wilde helpen met paracord knopen in een supkamp. En vervolgens hielpen we een hele avond talloze kinderen knopen leggen. In een wilde bui bedachten we eens dat we wilden leren kantklossen. Petra zag dat iemand van al de materialen die daarvoor nodig zijn af wilde, en had het die week nog in huis gehaald. “Voor een leuke winteravond, Annette!” zei ze dan.

Ze was altijd zo benaderbaar, dat ze zelfs haar huis en haar hart openzette, wanneer het met iemand niet goed ging. Soms zelfs jarenlang.

Naast de Jamborette, werden Eppoh en ik op het Naaldenveld binnengehaald. Het Naaldenveld is een groot terrein waar menig scout heeft gekampeerd. Petra was degene die ons de rondleiding gaf. We struinden over het terrein, liepen door achterafpaadjes en ik kwam op plekken waar ik nog nooit was geweest. Toen pas ontdekte ik dat Petra van kinds af aan al kind aan huis was. En haar ouders ook betrokken waren. We leerden elkaar nog beter kennen. Ook omdat ze regelmatig even

haar fiets tegen Het Huisje kwam zetten. Voor een praatje, of even iets regelen. Altijd met humor. En altijd duidelijk. Die duidelijkheid en openheid had ze ook, toen ze eind november 2022, ons Naaldenveldteam op de hoogte bracht van haar diagnose. En dat bleef ze doen, anderhalf jaar lang. We volgden zo de hoogte-, maar ook de dieptepunten.

Afgelopen Hemelvaart vroeg ze of ze een dagje bij ons op het Naaldenveld mocht komen. Genieten van het weer, van de gewone gang van zaken op een druk scoutingter-

rein. En omdat het handiger was dat ze niet meer alleen was. Dat moeten toegeven, vond ze moeilijk. Tussendoor bespraken we alles. Gewone dingen, maar ook open en eerlijk over zichzelf. En ook met Pinksteren zat ze mee aan de grote tafel. En het voelde iedere keer weer alsof we ons helemaal niet druk hoefden te maken. Alsof ze er altijd zou zijn. Het heeft helaas niet zo mogen zijn. Op 1 augustus is ze overleden.

Een teken wat scouts gebruiken bij een overlijden, is de cirkel met een punt erin. Petra was de punt in het midden en om haar heen werd ze omringd met een cirkel van liefde. Gone home, zeggen we dan.

DC annual event 3/10 - Leids ontzet in Melbourne, Black Rock

In Leiden, the 3rd of October is a special time for a community celebration. I usually attend to visit friends and family and enjoy some delicious hutspot (a traditional mashed dish with carrots and onions). This year, I’m excited to recreate that experience for the second time on row with a twist—by combining it with a fun volleyball competition!

You’re invited to join the volleyball team competition and let me know if you’d like to enjoy some hutspot as well. The cost is $20 for the food and $10 per person for participating in the competition.

We’ve also planned other activities throughout the evening, including traditional Dutch games for the kids (like koekhappen, spijkerpoepen, and more). The games will be held in 15-minute intervals.

Terugkeren of noemen we het remigreren?

En daar gaat het vaak al mis. De meeste mensen die besluiten om (weer) te verhuizen naar het land van herkomst (thuisland) spreken gemakshalve en vaker over ‘terugkeren’. Maar terugkeren impliceert meestal dat je ergens naar toe gaat (teruggaat) waar je alles al kent, de gebruiken, de cultuur of bijvoorbeeld de omgangsvormen. En dat is bij de meeste remigranten niet meer het geval, zij zijn al te lang weg uit het thuisland en hebben alle veranderingen niet meer meegekregen. Logisch, zij zijn immers zelf verdergegaan met de ontwikkelingen in het nieuwe land, maar ook het voormalige thuisland is verdergegaan. Denk maar eens aan veranderende regelgeving, politieke verschuivingen of de nieuwe woorden zoals

stikstofcrisis, energiearmoede of whappies.

Ook bij de achterblijvers in het zogenaamde thuisland spreekt men al gauw over het ‘terugkeren’ van de familieleden of vrienden die jarenlang in het buitenland hebben gewoond.

Het lijkt er haast wel op of het woord ‘terugkeren’ een zachtere, noem het desnoods simpele(re) lading zit dan op het woord remigreren.

Immers bij remigreren begrijpt iedereen, zowel de achterblijvers als juist ook de daadwerkelijke persoon die vertrekt, dat er meer bij komt kijken dan een simpele reis terug naar het thuisland.

Ik weet niet precies waarom, daarover mogen de geleerden zich uitspreken, maar het lijkt er ook wel op dat juist de andere mensen in jouw omgeving meer begrip en geduld voor je hebben na aankomst zolang je maar over de remigratie spreekt. En waarom spreken we bij een vertrek naar een nieuw land wel over emigreren en emigrant, maar zodra deze persoon weer ‘terug’ verhuist naar het thuisland hebben we vaak moeite met de termen remigreren en remigrant. Vreemd toch?

Een eenvoudige tip, een van de vele die ik ook in mijn nieuwe boek ‘Remigreren: een ontdekkingsreis naar (t)huis’ beschrijf, is het gebruik van het woord remigreren. Begin er zo vroeg mogelijk aan, zeker binnen het gezin, en gebruik zoveel als mogelijk het woord remigreren. Dit helpt niet alleen

jezelf en het gezin maar zeker ook de achterblijvers in het thuisland bij de bewustwording van een nieuwe en soms grote uitdaging.

‘The best of two worlds’ Even terug naar mijn laatste boek over remigreren. Hiervoor interviewde ik tientallen (voormalige) Nederlanders die al een of meerdere (r)emigraties achter de rug hebben en vroeg o.a. naar de voor- en nadelen hiervan. Een van deze wereldburgers, Arjan, woont tegenwoordig met zijn vrouw en drie kinderen in Zwitserland na een eerder jarenlang verblijf in Finland. De ouders zijn geboren in Nederland en de kinderen in zowel Finland, Nederland en Zwitserland. De voertaal in huis is een mengeling van Nederlands, Duits, Engels en soms ook Italiaans. Officieel tweetalig opgevoed, maar met een mengelmoes van culturen en afkomst. Want zo kan het ook gaan, opgroeien in een ander land of een andere cultuur dan waar je geboren bent of waar je de kinderen grootbrengt.

‘The best of two worlds’, zo omschreef Arjan een van de vele voordelen die er zijn om te emigreren naar een land zoals Zwitserland. Zij ervaren het leven in een ander land dan het thuisland (Nederland) als iets positiefs en zullen naar alle waarschijnlijkheid niet snel meer remigreren naar Nederland.

Toch kan het voor kinderen juist wel eens lastig zijn, zeker wanneer er thuis een andere taal wordt gesproken dan op school of bij vriendjes. Maar ook andere culturen, omgangsvormen

met bijvoorbeeld docenten en andere leerlingen maakt het voor kinderen wel eens uitdagend. Aan de andere kant zijn kinderen met een dergelijke achtergrond wel vaker (culturele-) bruggenbouwers en denken zij vaker in de WIJvorm dan de IK-vorm. En dat brengt ons bij de third culture kid’s.

Third Culture kids

Wat zijn dat dan? Third culture kids zijn personen die een significant deel van hun ontwikkelingsperiode hebben doorgebracht buiten de cultuur van hun ouders.

Amerikaanse onderzoekers hebben vastgesteld dat deze zogenaamde third culture kids (TCK’s) vaker in oplossingen denken dan in beperkingen. Dat is mooie bijkomstigheid.

Een aantal andere opvallende uitkomsten uit de vele onderzoeken zijn bijvoorbeeld ook dat TCK’s: - taalkundig erg bedreven zijn, meer dan niet-TCK’s; - deze groep Amerikaanse TCK’s over beter ontwikkelde cognitieve- en emotionele vaardigheden beschikken; - deze groep in de USA 4x zoveel kans heeft een bachelorsdiploma te halen dan niet-TCK’s; - en dat alle deelnemers aan dat onderzoek de behoefte hadden om te weten waar zij vandaan kwamen.

En dat laatste punt is wel een opvallende. In een eerder artikel in de Dutch Courier schreef ik over Ria, een Australische Nederlandse (of is het juist een Nederlandse Australische?) die ook de behoefte had om te weten waar zij vandaan kwam. Zij keerde een aantal malen terug naar Nederland met de gedachten dat zij heel eenvoudig haar plek weer kon vinden en zonder al te veel problemen weer een bestaan kon opbouwen. Dat liep niet helemaal goed af. Ik kan het haar helaas niet meer vragen, maar ik ben wel benieuwd of zij steeds dacht over terugkeren in plaats van remigreren naar Nederland?

Het zogenaamde TCK- element gaat nooit meer weg, ook niet bij de inmiddels volwassen geworden TCK’s. De ouders mogen dan wel voormalige emigranten, ambassademedewerkers of medewerkers van internationale organisaties zijn geweest; maar hun kinderen zullen nooit voormalige TCK’s zijn. Princess Alexia heads for London and a science degree

Princess Alexia, king WillemAlexander and queen Máxima’s second daughter, is to study “science & engineering for social change” at University College London from the coming academic year.

Earlier it had been reported that the princess was heading for Groningen after completing a gap year. She had attended Atlantic College in Wales for her final two years of secondary school.

According to the university website, students will “gain multi-disciplinary knowledge that is sought-after in business, charity, government and policy roles.” The three-year degree is a BSc and awarded by the faculty of engineering.

AI will solve healthcare staff shortages, health minister says August 9, 2024

Health minister Fleur Agema is pinning her hopes on artificial intelligence to help solve the pressure of work and staff shortages in healthcare.

Agema said on social media this week that AI will lead to a “revolution” in healthcare and that she would do “all I can” to make sure this happens.

She made the comments after visiting the ElisabethTweeSteden hospital in Tilburg, which she described as a “leading player” in the use of AI in healthcare, particularly in administrative tasks.

Earlier this week Agema told the Telegraaf that bringing in people from abroad to make up the shortfall in healthcare workers was no longer an option, referring to the new government’s pledge to bring in tough new immigration rules.

“We will have to do it with the people that we have,” she said.

Acknowledging there are also significant concerns among critics about the use of AI when dealing with sensitive patient information, the minister said she is optimistic.

“There are funds available for digitisation,” she said. “The

money is running out, but there is lots of funding available for this.”

The Dutch privacy watchdog Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens has recently issued a warning about the use of AI-driven chatbots by companies, following several leaks of private information, including medical details.

Workers who use digital assistants such as ChatGPT to answer questions from customers or summarise large files, may save time, but they also pose a risk to data protection, the AP said.

In one case, a family doctor’s assistant fed private information about patients into a ChatGPT-based programme, which was then stored on the tech company’s servers and potentially used to train the software, the AP said.

People must be able to trust their medical information is safe, spokeswoman Karin told broadcaster NOS. “But once that information is in the system, you no longer have control of it.”

German court stops preparation for gas drilling in Wadden Sea

Gas company One-Dyas has run into more legal trouble with its plans to drill for gas off the coast of the Wadden Sea islands of Schiermonnikoog and Borkum, this time in Germany.

Judges in Oldenberg have ruled that the electricity cable the company planned to run to the rig would harm marine life near the German Wadden island of Borkum, including reefs. The case was brought by German environmental organisation Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), German media reported.

The court’s decision is a preliminary one and a final ruling will come at a later date but until then, no drilling can take place.

The delay is one of many for One-Dyas which was told to stop its preparations for drilling in April because it had not convincingly shown a Dutch court how it would tackle CO2 emissions. That decision was overturned in May when the company adapted its CO2

strategy.

In June, the Dutch Council of State imposed another delay following a protest by environmental organisations but One-

Dyas was ultimately granted permission to continue to prepare for drilling pending a final ruling.

One-Dyas said the court’s decision is “bad news for the security of supply, the economy and the climate”.

Dutch workers are becoming less productive, says CBS August 8, 2024

Dutch companies and institutions were less productive last year, after years of virtually no change in the labour productivity rate, national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.

Labour productivity in the Netherlands rose by an average of 1.5% a year for decades but since 2014 the increase has averaged just 0.4%. Last year, however, productivity actually fell 1.3%, one of the biggest declines in the last 50 years and second only to 2009 when the credit crisis hit.

There are several reasons for the downturn, the CBS said. Gas extraction from under the province of Groningen was halted because of the earthquakes it caused, and the healthcare, civil service, construction and industrial sectors were all less productive.

In addition, much of the Dutch economy is based on services – such as trade, logistics and financial services and these are sectors where it is more difficult to innovate and so boost productivity.

The growth over the past few years has been down largely to people working more hours rather than added value per hour, the CBS said.

Nevertheless, the Netherlands is still a highly productive country, CBS chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen told Nu.nl. “The easy innovations have already been made,” he said. “Countries in central and Eastern Europe are grow-

ing faster because they have some catching up to do.”

Compared with the rest of the EU, only five countries have a worse record in terms of the growth in labour productivity over the past five years: Finland, Greece, France, Italy and Luxembourg.

Rail travellers can expect a “tough” autumn due to the shortage of trains and speed limits on stretches of track that need maintenance, NS chief Wouter Koolmees said on Tuesday.

“The reality is that our problems cannot be solved like that and I don’t know when they will be solved,” Koolmees told news agency ANP.

Although the problems are piling up throughout the network, the situation on the high speed train link is particularly fraught, he said.

Trains have now been reduced to 80kph on some stretches of track because the viaducts the trains move along are unsafe. Those problems are likely to remain until 2026, NS and rail operator ProRail said on Tuesday.

The state-owned railway company said earlier this month it is planning to put up the price of tickets by 8.7% plus inflation next year and to cut some 500 jobs.

The company, which is 100% owned by the state, is loss-making and says the moves are necessary to restore profitability.

This year a government cash injection of €120 million staved off the threatened price hike. But so far there is no such extra help for next year, which means the 8.7% rise plus in-

flation will go ahead.

It will be a seasonal service and a more sustainable way for skiers to get to the slopes.

European Sleeper announced on that the service will launch on 5 February 2025 and op-

erate twice a week during February and March.

The full journey time will be 20 hours with the train departing Brussels at 17:00 with it’s final stop of the evening in Cologne at 23:00 before arriving into Munich at 07:00 the next day and making its way to Venice for 14:00.

“This marks a new important milestone for European Sleeper and the convenience of night travel across Europe more sustainably,” says Chris Engelsman, co-founder of European Sleeper.

The company said in a press release that prices have not been announced yet but bookings will begin in September.

Last year it launched the first night train between Brussels and Berlin in 10 years.

Perry Como was helemaal niet van plan om zanger te worden. Hij wilde de beste kapper van Canonsburg worden! Hij verkocht meer dan vijftig miljoen platen.

Pierino werd geboren op 18 mei 1912 als zevende zoon (na hem volgde nog zes kinderen) in Canonsburg (Pensylvania).

Om een gezin met 13 kinderen te onderhouden, moest iedereen in het gezin een steentje bijdragen en dus ging hij na school werken bij een lokale kapperszaak. Ook ging hij zingen op bruiloften en partijen.

Pierino begon eigen kapperszaak

Al tijdens zijn middelbare school begon hij zijn eigen kapperszaak. Hij trouwde op 31 juli 1933 met zijn schoolliefde Roselle Belline, met wie hij 65 jaar getrouwd bleef (tot haar dood). Samen hadden ze drie kinderen (waarvan twee geadopteerd). Samen hielden ze de kinderen altijd uit de publiciteit.

Perry Como begint met zingen

Hij deed in 1933 auditie en begon voor 25 dollar per week te zingen in een niet zo’n succesvolle band. Perry stapte in 1936 naar de “Teddy Colone’s band”, die al een succesvol radioprogramma had. De band ging in 1942 uit elkaar. Net toen hij bedacht weer lekker te gaan knippen, kreeg hij een contract aangeboden door NBC. Hij mocht als ‘ster’ gaan zingen in de ‘NBC’s Supper Club’, een radioprogramma die van maandag tot vrijdag werd uitgezonden.

Perry werd een ster Eind jaren 40 kreeg hij op de vrijdagavond een eigen televisieprogramma bij RCA. De succesvolle Perry werd een

heuse concurrent van de Ed Sullivan Show. Hij werd ook door Hollywood gevraagd om in een aantal films te spelen. Hij bleek niet zo’n goede acteur te zijn en stopte maar snel.

De aanwezige Tweede Kamerleden waren het er gezamenlijk over eens dat er nog eens gekeken moet worden naar het thema van dubbele nationaliteit en dat voorkomen moet worden dat Nederlanders hun nationaliteit verliezen. Linde van den Bosch (Stichting Nederlands Onderwijs in het Buitenland, NOB) en Nicolien van Vroonhoven (NSC) benadrukten naast het belang van ambassades ook de rol van Nederlands onderwijs in het buitenland voor het behoud van de Nederlandse taal en cultuur.

De Stichting Nederlanders Buiten Nederland ziet er naar uit jaarlijks op 5 september aandacht te besteden aan de nieuwe Dag van de Nederlanders Buiten Nederland.

Spectacular exhibition in the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane, showing designs by Iris van Herpen.

She is a Dutch fashion designer who creates beautiful and extremely imaginative designs, inspired by nature. She collaborates with architects and other artists, conceiving and creating designs with themes such as water, cosmos, dreams, exoskeletons and metamorphism. Iris has been doing this already 16 years, in her atelier in Amsterdam. Since 2011 she has a fashion show in Paris twice per year.

One of the characteristics of Iris’ designs is the fluidity of the dresses. Even a small movement of the body or a whisper of air flow will cause the dresses to shimmer and dance. Sometimes it is almost as if the dress is alive. Most of the designs are made from very thin material, such as organza, in multiple layers, other dresses are made from 3D printed forms appliqued on sheer fabrics. Often the forms follow the body shape, seeming to stick to it like cobwebs, sometimes they float like clouds, or wind around the body like a clinging vine. Other dresses stick out upwards or sideways as sculptures. Occasionally the head or face are covered too. The exhibition consists of 100 dresses, of which only a handful are not made of shiny materials. All of them are very exceptional designs, put together from many separate pieces of fabric. The shoes of the collection are mostly created using 3D printing and are of course highly unusual, looking rather uncomfortable. In contrast, most of the dresses do look comfortable, although some designs are clearly not made for sitting down.

Iris van Herpen contemplates her designs as a cross-pollination of various fields: art, chemistry, dance, physics, architecture and biology. She studied at the Amsterdam Art Academy and has a background in dance. Her designs are reflecting this and she has designed costumes for many dance companies. and actors such as Beyonce, Bjork, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. As many as six celebrities wore an Iris van Herpen design to the Met Gala in 2021, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands celebrated her 50th birthday in a custom couture dress by Iris. The exhibition in Brisbane’s GOMA runs from 29 June until 7 Oct 2024. Thereafter the collection moves to the ArtScience Museum in Singapore (8 March – 27 July 2025), and finally to the Kunsthal Rotterdam from 26 September 2025 until 22 February 2026.

If you are going to be near one of these places during the exhibition dates, I do recommend that you make an effort to visit it. I’ve never seen anything like it before, and I guarantee that you haven’t either. It is very extra-sensory and absolutely fantastic.

I visited with a small group of mostly Dutchies attending a special guided tour organised by DACC’s Paul Budde. After the tour we went around again and took photographs. We spent three and a half hours there and I could have spent more. I found it extremely fascinating and am planning to go see it once more. Many thanks to Paul for organising the tour.

Denny Watson

Denny Watson is a beloved Elder at Prins Willem Alexander Lodge, cherished for his tenacity, quick wit and dry sense of humour. As Denny would be the first to attest he is no ‘spring chicken’ with over 60 years of experience as a cabinet maker and carpenter. Denny’s journey began humbly in Mackay as an apprentice. His talent and ded- ication soon led him to excel in his craft, nurturing a profound love for woodturning.

During his time at Prins Willem, Denny has missed his woodworking and being able to use his hands to create masterpieces like he used to. During one of our Elders’ meetings a request was made to repair and revitalise all the outdoor wooden furniture at Prins Willem Alexander Lodge. It didn’t take the maintenance and allied health teams long to work out that this project ticked all the boxes! With the collaborative support of the allied health and maintenance teams Denny was consulted and he leapt at the idea! Using his practical knowledge and carpentry skillset the project to revamp the outdoor furniture at the lodge has become a meaningful avenue for Denny. The act of painting and sanding has not only offered Denny lots of physical exercise, rejuvenated his creativity but most importantly uplifted his spirit!

This project is more than just a task; it’s a heartfelt endeavour that has reconnected Denny with his passion, bringing joy and a sense of fulfilment back into his life. A testament to the way we can come together to support one another, nurturing both the physical and emotional well-being of those we hold dear.

The best Australian Rules players of Dutch-heritage will be formally recognised and honoured at the Dutch Team of the Century function at the Dutch Club Abel Tasman in Carnegie on a later date as the event has postponed.

Adam Muyt looks at the Dutch heritage of some former and current players who feature in the team.

Matt de Boer, a 223-game veteran with Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney (GWS), has Dutch-heritage from his grandparents, who arrived in Perth in the 1950s. This led to him meeting King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima in Canberra in 2016 where he shared his Opa and Oma’s migrant story with them at the National Archives. De Boer told the Daily Telegraph at the time his favourite colour was orange. His GWS teammates quickly dubbed him Dutchy. De Boer is now a commissioner with the code’s peak body, the Australian Football League (AFL).

Current Carlton player Tom De Koning, and his brother, Sam, a premiership player with Geelong, have Dutch grandparents through their father Terry, who played 31 games for Footscray in the VFL in the early 1980s.

Several thousand Dutch came to Australia with connections to the former colony of the Netherlands East Indies. Many had suffered terribly during the Japanese occupation of 1942-45. Vander Haar’s father, Bernard, was one, interned as a boy in a Japanese prison camp; his father was a captain in the Dutch colonial army. Leendert Vlastuin, Opa of current three-time Richmond premiership player Nick Vlastuin, experienced a traumatic time under the Japanese; he’d served in the Dutch colonial army and after imprisonment at Changi, was sent to the notorious ThaiBurma Railway. His grandson’s renowned focus and toughness on the footy field may in part be explained by his Opa’s hard exterior and capacity to persevere under pressure.

Australia’s multi-ethnic mix means not all Dutch heritage is obvious, of course. Take the Ah Chee brothers, Callum and Brendan who have Chinese and Indigenous heritage alongside Dutch: their Opa was a merchant seaman who jumped ship in Fremantle, marrying their Noongar grandmother. When their mum was seven the family even moved to the Netherlands for a few years before returning to Western Australia. Now retired, Brendan played with Port Adelaide and West Coast

Eagles while Callum continues playing with the Brisbane Lions where he’s developed into a mainstay of the team. Another pair of brothers whose Dutch heritage isn’t evident are David and Andrew Swallow – their mother is Dutch. Andrew was a star for North Melbourne across a dozen seasons, while David continues playing with the Gold Coast Suns, where he is the club’s record games holder. And then there are those whose Dutch origins here go much further back. Richie Vandenberg, Hawthorn skipper from 2005 to 2007, owes his Dutch Australian heritage to a shipwreck off Robe in South Australia in 1857, the year before Australian Rules was first codified in Melbourne. The ship, the Dutch-flagged, King Willem II, had just disembarked its Chinese passengers for the Victorian Goldfields when a huge storm blew up and drove it aground, wrecking it. Op deze hout-omlijnde wandtegel (want hij kan worden opgehangen in woonkamers, gangen en WC’s) staat het volgende te lezen:

Heeft men eenmaal Abraham zien staan dan breekt de volle rijkdom van ‘t leven aan.

Mijn allereerste reactie op wat die tegel mij vertelt, is: “Geloof jij het? Geloof ik het?” Want die tegel probeert mij te vertellen dat het leven pas zijn volle rijkdom aan ons geeft als we de leeftijd van 50 bereikt hebben. Er wordt zelfs een religieus tintje aan gegeven, want voor mannen wordt de bijbelse figuur van Abraham erbij gehaald en voor vrouwen komt zijn echtgenote, Sara of Sarah, op de proppen. Voor banketbakkers is dat een speciale gelegenheid om hun creativiteit bot te vieren op banketpoppen zoals deze:

Toen ik vijftig werd, woonde en werkte ik al weer een tijdje in Nederland en heb toen vrienden en vriendinnen dui-

delijk te kennen gegeven dat ik er niet naar hunkerde, een Sara-pop te krijgen, hoe lekker die dan ook mocht zijn. Ik heb ook pas op het internet gezien dat er tegenwoordig in plaats van banketpoppen, ook opblaaspoppen van modern uitziende Abrahams en Sarahs te koop en te huur zijn. Omdat het zo leuk is, vijftig te worden? Of om de pijn van de te snel vervlogen jeugd ietwat te stillen?

Als ik het me goed herinner, heb ik al eerder een stukje geschreven over de belangrijke rol die tegels (en daarmee bedoel ik siertegels) in onze cultuur spelen. En wat ik weer in onze collectie zag, was dat wij Nederlanders blijkbaar heel belerend van aard zijn. Dat we heel graag anderen vertellen, hoe te leven, maar gelukkig daarbij niet vergeten, ook lol te hebben. Zoals ik al vermeldde, kunnen we vaak die belerende boodschappen, oftewel “Volkswijsheden” aan de wand of op de deur van een WC tegenkomen. Nu zijn WC’s natuurlijk ideale plekken om over de diepere zin des levens na te zitten denken en zou het iedereen verheugen, volgende wijsheden binnen oogbereik te hebben, vooral als ze zo artistiek opgehangen zijn:

En gelukkig zijn deze wijsheden gemengd met een gezonde dosis humor, want wat

dacht u van :

Ik hoef niet te zwemmen in het geld maar pootjebaden vind ik fijn

En op tegel nummer twee: Mannen moeten zijn als koffie, sterk, goed en warm

Wat ik zo leuk vind van het gezegde is dat het zo puur en simpel uit de vrouwenhoek komt. En natuurlijk hebben we het hier over koffie die je eerst maalt en dan “zet”, op wat voor manier dan ook, of met alleen een filter, of met een filter in een koffiezetapparaat of, heel chique, in een cafétière (wat we hier een plunger noemen), maar zeer zeker niet instant!

Ik heb net via Google veel informatie gekregen nadat ik “wandtegels met spreuken” ingetikt had. Want daar kwamen ze tevoorschijn: oude en moderne, soms sentimenteel, maar meestal humoristisch. Deze tegel, bv. geeft ons een klein zedenpreekje, want hij vertelt ons in sierlijke letters dat:

Als wij Eigen Gebreken, Wat Beter Bekeken, Zouden we ‘t Praten Over Anderen Laten

Met andere woorden: even nadenken voordat je gaat roddelen. (Een prachtwoord, dat “roddelen”, over iets dat zo vaak ellende brengt!)

Op de bovenstaande tegels staan volkswijsheden geschreven die misschien al eeuwen lang de ronde deden, maar ook eeuwen lang alleen mondeling gedeeld werden, want In ons moederland werd er pas in 1901 de leerplicht ingevoerd, dus vóór die tijd

konden maar weinig mensen lezen. De Nederlandse mondelinge geschiedenis of mondelinge overlevering geeft ons een rijke keuze van observaties, waarschuwingen en doodgewoon levendige beschrijvingen van situaties. Hier zijn wat voorbeelden:

Als de kat van huis is, Dansen de muizen op tafel en nog een paar:

De appel valt niet ver van de boom.

Dan een ietwat venijnige: De beste stuurlui staan aan wal.

En een gezegde dat ontegenzegbaar is: Waar rook is, is vuur.

Volgens geschiedschrijvers is de volgende uitdrukking, die al meer dan tweeduizend jaar bestaat, de oudste volkswijsheid:

Geld stinkt niet.

Het schijnt dat een zekere Romeinse keizer, Vespasianus genaamd, dat voor het eerst, en natuurlijk in het Latijns, gezegd heeft: Pecunia non olet. Wat gezegdes over geld betreft, daar kunnen we misschien eens een andere keer naar kijken, want de Nederlandse taal wemelt ervan. Hier even twee voorbeelden:

Het geld groeit me niet op de rug en Voor hetzelfde geld (net zo goed).

Sommige uitdrukkingen geven ons levendige en leuke beeldspraak, zoals in “De muren hebben oren” of “aan iemands lippen hangen” of “op elkaars lip zitten.” en we weten allemaal dat deze uitdrukkingen niet

letterlijk genomen hoeven te worden. Over wijsheden of wijsheid gesproken, trekt de boodschap op deze tegel mij erg aan:

Af en toe moet je wijs zijn om je verstand te verliezen

Ik denk dan meteen aan carnaval en hoe wijs de oude kerkvaders waren om die vreugdevolle drie dagen na Aswoensdag in te lassen voordat de vastentijd van 40 dagen aanving. Op die manier, voordat men zijn vleselijke behoeftes voor een paar weken vaarwel zegt, want dat is wat “carne vale”(aan het vlees, vaarwel) betekent, krijg je eigenlijk toestemming van de kerk om lekker gek te doen. Ik heb hier thuis nog de paarse pruik die ik gedurende carnaval in Tilburg gedragen heb. Tot slot, nog een paar gezegdes die iets over onze volksaard zeggen:

Ik ben de baas in dit huis zolang mijn vrouw dit goed vindt

Als je niets te doen hebt, Doe het dan niet hier

Alles overtroefend is dit: Ik ga niet in discussie Ik leg gewoon uit waarom ik gelijk heb

Although only four games have been played, the standings in the Eredivisie table look like no other year in my memory. Normally, we would expect Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV to dominate the top

three positions. Ajax is near the bottom of the table with only 3 points while Feyenoord is sitting behind their less fancied neighbours Sparta Rotterdam in 8th position. PSV is the only one of the top three that is performing to expectations leading the Eredivisie on 12 points.

The biggest shock of the Eredivisie was their defeat by newcomers, NAC in the first match of the season. Australian, 23-year-old ex-Central Coast player Max Balard, was instrumental in the defeat. A few days later, Ajax played a marathon Europa League qualifying round against Panathinaikos where they won 13-12 on penalties. It was a tough match with the Greeks receiving 7 yellow cards to two

for Ajax.

If Ajax can defeat Utrecht in their next game, their season will be back on track. It will be interesting to see what impact Dutch international Wout Weghorst will have. It’s an excellent signing and is exactly the type of player Ajax needs. Watching their last few games, so many chances have been missed by their misfiring forward line. He was snapped up for a bargain €2.38 million. Including Weghorst, eight new players were brought into the squad. Two arrived on a free transfer and the rest have returned to the club with the completion of their loan to other clubs. On the other hand, Ajax sold eleven players. If we deduct the €2.38 million paid for Weghorst, Ajax made €54.62 profit.

Ajax is now run buy accountants who insist on buying cheap and hoping to sell their best players at a premium. The much-vaunted Ajax training and coaching system, once the envy of the world, is no longer the example that all other clubs aspire. It’s not that Ajax has changed its training methods. The leading clubs have caught up. Ajax will never be great again until it changes its attitude in selling their best players but not buying quality.

An excellent example is the transfer Steven Bergwijn to Saudi team Al-Ittihad for

Mijn zoon Joerie

Mijn zoon Joerie, nu 22, is momenteel academie voetbalcoach bij Right to Dream in Ghana. Ik wil een column schrijven over zijn weg daar naartoe, maar begin met onze emigratie naar Melbourne.

De speelgroep waar we met Joerie naar toe gingen was de Elwood Dutch playgroup. Dezelfde speelgroep die nu nog in Port Melbourne voortgezet is. De speelgroep vond ik geweldig. De thema’s die daar waren gebruikte ik gewoon als thema voor mijn leven. Dus thema strand, dan zag je mij de hele week op het strand en was het thema bos , dan ging ik daarheen. Het gaf me focus om met mijn kind te integreren in een land ver weg van huis en leerde daardoor nieuwe mensen kennen. Deze mensen werden al snel een soort van familie. Een familie die ik nodig had voor het opgroeien van mijn kind, want ja dat kregen we al heel snel door. Een kind voed je niet op in je eentje, want als je geluk hebt doe je dat met een dorp om hem heenbouwen. En dat probeerde ik dus.

Door deze speelgroep heb ik de basis kunnen leggen om de Nederlandse taal te blijven praten met Joerie en later ook Antonie. Een taal wat soms een geheimtaal was en een taal voor waar we vandaan kwamen. Het weten van waar je vandaan komt blijkt namelijk belangrijk te zijn voor het vormen van je identiteit, dus daar wilde ik natuurlijk graag aan mee werken. Door de speelgroep wilde ik Joerie ook laten weten dat wij als gezinnetje niet de enige waren die die taal spraken en dat er nog meer mensen waren net zoals hij en wij in Australie. Zo vierde we met de community

Sinterklaas, Carnaval, en gingen we naar de borrel.

Nu, 22, spreekt hij vloeiend Nederlands en gaat hij af en toe zelf naar Nederland toe.

Naar Nederland gaan deden we zowiezo ongeveer elk 1,5 jaar om wederom te laten zien waar hij vandaan kom t.

Het is leuk om te zien dat hij nu zelf eventjes tijdens zijn vakantie tussen de bedrijven door van zijn drukke baan in Ghana naar Nederland gaat. Hij bezoekt zelfstandig bezoekjes aan familie en vrienden van de Nederlandse les die weer terug zijn gegaan worden niet overgeslagen.

“Kinderen” van deze leeftijd voelen herkenning bij andere kinderen die ook in het buitenland hebben gewoond en hebben natuurlijk iets gemeen. Leuk om te zien.

Ik begreep dat het speelgroep idee niet iets is wat een wereldwijd fenomeen is, Het is een “commonwealth” ding, maar ik zou het eigenlijk wel adviseren om te doen in een ander land. Je bouwt namelijk als ouder en als kind een netwerk op. Ik dacht eigenlijk vooral belangrijk voor de taal, maar daardoor krijg je een groep die elkaar begrijpt omdat ze hetzelfde hebben meegemaakt.

Ik zou het zo weer doen en hopelijk kan dat ooit ook als oma voor de kinderen van Joerie en Antonie one day.

More SPORT - Crazy start to the Eredivisie

“Steven and Ajax have made no secret of the fact that if a good offer came from abroad, he would make the move,” said Alex Kroes, Ajax’s technical director. “That has now happened at the last minute, giving the club the necessary financial flexibility to hopefully bring in a suitable replacement in the short term.” In other words, he was either unsatisfied with his salary or with the club’s recruitment giving him very little confidence in the club’s prospects.

With their champion coach Arne Slot leaving for Liverpool, we can forgive them for their slow start with 1 all draws against Sparta and Willem II who are equal on 5 points with Feyenoord. The loss of their best defender, and Dutch international Geertruida last week to RB Leipzig and Mats Wieffer to Brighton, will make it difficult for Feyenoord to challenge for the title. A total of 22 players departed the club which Feyenoord are building a new team.

Despite PSV dominated again in the Eredivisie with a comfortable 3-0 win in their last game over Go Ahead Eagles. The reigning champions are top of the Eredivisie table after four matches played having won all their fixtures. In their other matches, Heracles was defeated 3-1, Almere 7-1 and bottom of the table RKC Waalwijk 5-1.

Match report PSV – Go Ahead Eagles

Although PSV manager Peter Bosz spoke of a bad start from his side after the match, they actually scored their first goal after just ten minutes. Guus Til continued his good last year’s form by some excellent control in the box before putting it into the bottom corner after only ten minutes. In the 27th minute, Luuk de Jong played the ball into the path of the Eredivisie top scorer, Hirving Lozano who scored his fourth goal of the season.

Unfortunately, Luuk de Jong was forced to come off the pitch injured in the first half and his replacement, Ricard Pepi, was unluicky in the 53rd minute with his shot after hitting the crossbar. The third

PSV goal was their best of the day. Malik Tillman scored the best goal of the day after spinning inside of his opponent before playing a great pass to Joey Veerman in the box, who side-footed it home. Bosz’s side have conceded just three goals while scoring 18 times in their four matches. Go Ahead Eagles have not made as good of a start with one win in their first four games.

AZ Alkmaar beat RKC 0-3 away to hold onto second place.

A sensational signing for PSV from Australia has only recently occurred. Western City Wanderers announced the departure of Marcus Younis for PSV. It was only in 2023 when Younis made his debut in the A-League. It comes after the sudden interest by PSV in the A-League who recently reached an agreement with Adelaide United for the two clubs to “mutually exchange” players as well as provide Adelaide players the opportunity to train with PSV’s coaching academy. Adelaide have announced the signing of 33-year-old Bart Vriends and PSV Eindhoven player, Julian Kwaaitaal.

Match report AZ Alkmaar v RKC

The biggest standout to me is the start made by 20-year-old Ruben van Bommel, the son of Mark van Bommel. Almost two metres in height, Ruben van Bommel had his first chance for AZ after 14 minutes, but he hit the post with his attempt. 16 minutes later he scored after latching onto a low cross. In scoring his second, he cleverly controlled a long ball before slotting it into the far corner. The Dutch U/20 international impressed with his quick acceleration, control and excellent runs into the box. I am tipping that he may become a better player than his father and a future senior international.

The second half should have had RKC defender Michiel Kramer red carded after he deliberately elbowed an AZ player. He obviously thought he could get away with it and repeated the offence in the 72nd minute.

AZ are second in the league table having won three out of their first four matches. RKC, however, is bottom of the league, having conceded 12 goals in four losses.

FC Utrecht, which was only founded in 1970, is level on points with AZ after beating FC Twente on Sunday. Former Utrecht striker Sam Lammers had given Twente the lead, but goals from 35-year-old veteran midfielder Jens Toornstra and 23-year-old midfielder, Can Bozdogan, gave Utrecht the win.

Fourth placed FC Groningen on points is probably the biggest surprise with their best result a 4-1 win against NAC and a draw with AZ Alkmaar. The big test will be in their next match against Feyenoord followed by their traditional rivals, Heerenveen who is sitting in 10th position.

The National Team

Ronald Koeman was unhappy with Bergwijn’s decision by announcing Dutch footballers at Saudi clubs will not play for the Netherlands. While discussing his squad for the two UEFA Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany at a press conference, Koeman said that he will not pick winger Steven Bergwijn while he is playing in Saudi Arabia. “The book is ba- sically closed to him,” Koeman said at the press conference.

“You know what I think about this. When you are 26, your main ambition should be sporting, not financial. These are choices that players make. I have never been in that situation, because I could join Barcelona. He could have stayed at Ajax. That’s not so bad, is it? You have to respect his choice, but personally, I wouldn’t have moved,” Koeman explained his logic behind the decision.

Koeman also confirmed that

the two 33-year-olds Marten de Roon and Wijnaldum would not be called up for the national side again while he is manager. He confirmed that Daley Blind had announced his retirement from international football.

Jurien Timber was a surprise inclusion as he has only recently returned after a longterm injury. Frenkie de Jong was not included due to an ankle injury.

The Oranje play Bosnia and Herzegovina on 8 Sept; Germany 11 Sept; Hungary 12 Oct; Germany 15 Oct; Hungary 17 Nov; and Bosnia and Herzegovina on 20 Nov.

Transfers to Manchester United Joshua Zirkzee scored on his debut. Matthijs de Ligt, who was recently announced in the Netherlands squad, is now a Manchester United player after Bayern agreed ot a transfer fee of €45m + €5m add-ons.
