OPINION

Hemisaurus rides again Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Hemisaurus is a monster on the track and last weekend it proved it again, this time in Saskatoon. After taking a couple years away from the track, Greg Benzon and his crew of Wendy and Ty Benzon, Clayton Brown, Tammy Taylor, Perry Poroznuk and Lorne Ell were back on the track August 23, and they were ying. Benzon had the Hemisaurus out last season in Edmonton on testing day, and earlier this summer he was in Three Hills for the airport run. This was the ďŹ rst time he had been on a dedicated grippy drag strip in some time, and it was time to put the ham-

mer down. On August 23, they were among 16 blown alcohol cars from Canada and the US at “The Big One at the Saskatchewan International Raceway.

Benzon is very happy with how the car performed. It was a competitive field and most drivers were running similar set ups, but with a larger blower.

“We set it to kill, said Benzon, explaining this means dialing in the blown alcohol altered Bantam funny car up to its maximum 1,700 horsepower. While the track had lots of rubber laid down to keep the tires

gripping, it was pretty bumpy and Benzon admits he had to lift o the throttle a couple times to keep control. Despite this, he qualiďŹ ed with the fastest time of 7.31 at 184 MPH. Benzon won his second race, sending him to the ďŹ nals. In the championship race, they were beat by a car from Montana. Benzon is very happy with how the car performed. It was a competitive ďŹ eld and most drivers were running similar set ups, but with a larger blower. Right now he says his car is built to run in the 6.90 range, and he is not in a hurry to upgrade. This is the end of the racing season for Benzon and his team.

Will Truth Prevail in Rosebud? Award winning Doubt: A Parable onstage in Rosebud this fall Submitted | inSide Drumheller

Life is full of doubt. Everyone experiences it at one time or another. And it can involve a multitude of topics from a trivial purchase with little consequence to something much larger that involves people and can seriously change the paths of the lives of those involved. At Rosebud Theatre this fall, Doubt: A Parable graces the Opera House stage and lets audiences focus on one particular case of doubt and make their own decisions about the events that unfurl. When a conservative and traditional nun has suspicions about a new priest at the school paying too much attention to one troubled student, she launches a crusade to expose the truth – whatever the cost. Secrets unfold with shocking suspense in this Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning play, which in 2008 also became an Academy Award-nominated movie starring Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour-Homan, and Amy

Adams. Director Morris Ertman comments, “This is an amazing play about more than what meets the eye. It’s about suspicion, ulterior motives, and how decisions aect people’s lives. It asks difďŹ cult questions of the audience about what they would do in similar situations. This may only be a one-act play, but the second act begins when you get in the car for the drive home and start discussing the story you just saw and the decisions made by each of the characters.â€? The show features some well-known Rosebud faces and is perfectly cast according to Ertman. “Nathan Schmidt Fiddler on the Roof, Freud’s Last Session plays the charismatic and very modern Father Flynn, and he will capture our sympathies immediately. Jeany Van Meltebeke Fiddler on the Roof, The Diary of Anne Frank plays the traditional nun at the centre of the investigation, and she is so sympathetic as a person, we will ďŹ nd ourselves onside with her as well. WORKS Contest winners amazed... Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Locals can routinely see dinosaurs throughout their day, and most have probably been to the Royal Tyrrell Museum numerous times, but for the winners of CTV’s Canada AM “Digging in the Badlands” contest, it’s all new and wonderful. “I’ve always seen dinosaurs on t.v. and read about them, but to see them in person - it’s eye opening. It’s amazing,” said Dale Williams. Dale and Linda Williams with sons Matthew, 13, and Alex 10, from Pool’s Cove,

Newfoundland, were in town this week enjoying their prize. “It was so neat coming down into the valley,” said Linda. “Hills!” Dale added it’s quite the experience driving on the flatlands, “It’s so vast.” The family arrived Monday, August 25, and were kept busy enjoying the local attractions. Their Tuesday trip to the Royal Tyrrell included a dig and behind the scenes tour with the museum’s Dr. Don Henderson. Linda shared a picture of the fossil, ten-yearold Alex unearthed on

Summer day camp hits up Valley Droos, a summer day camp based in Calgary, visited Drumheller for one out of their eighteen planned trips. This week’s theme for the camp was “Swamp Monsters,” and what better place to pursue creatures from the deep than a town swamped in prehistoric history?

The group sought out various kid-friendly hot spots around town, including the Tyrrell Museum, Reptile World, and the World’s Largest Dinosaur. At the end of their busy day of exploring, the kids cooled off in the town’s splash park. inSide photo by Lauren Main

the dig - a clear crosssection of a pine cone. Dad Dale enjoyed the behind the scenes tour immensely, appreciating that he got to try out the air brush tool used for wearing away rock around a fossil. The family also visited reptile world, and Alex had a small album’s worth of photos on his phone he kindly shared. Wednesday’s scheduled tour was to the Atlas Coal Mine, the Hoodoos, and the East Coulee School Museum. Towards the end of the family’s day, Linda said the kids started asking if they get to go in the hotel pool. The kids love the waterslide, and Linda said she’d never been on one before, but gave it a try. She ended up tiring herself out on it. Thursday the Williams headed for Brooks and Dinosaur Provincial Park, and then it was off to Calgary for Friday. The Williams were considering visiting the Calgary Zoo, with Linda adding that getting in some shopping would be nice, especially with fewer taxes in Alberta. The family flew back home Friday, and in that wonderful Newfoundland style, they said to let them know if ever we headed out their way to visit.

Delia’s Doug Greer displays his 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger at Delia’s Show n’ Shine Saturday, August 2, as part of the town's Centennial. Greer bought the car in the early 1980s from a friend in Calgary for $2,600, which he tells us was also the price the car sold for new in 1970. He replaced the stock 340 engine with a new 413 stroker V8 engine, bringing the car’s horsepower up to 500. The original black with red stripe body was repainted “lemon twist” by Fred Korroll in Hanna, and the original vinyl hardtop has also been redone. A friend of Greer’s in Red Deer restored the interior about three years ago, and all the guages on the dash were upgraded because the original guages weren’t accurate. Greer says he is still working on the car. inSide photo by Michele Scott

with a band (Roadside Attraction), and I’m a voracious reader. What’s your biggest volunteer commitment right now? Tough Mudder. I’ve been working on it steadily since March. Are you entered in Tough Mudder? No. I don’t run, unless it’s away from a spider. What’s your favourite music to listen to? My taste in music is so diverse, it’s hard to pick one genre (and it depends on my mood). What would be the best theme song for your life right now? “I’m in a Hurry” by Alabama. What is something most people wouldn’t know about you? I get a little bit of stage fright whenever I sing, perform or speak in front of an audience. Final thought? I’m grateful for Drumheller’s volunteer spirit.

It’s a great place to work and the people. How long have you lived in the valley? Just over six years. Where did you move from? Hanna. Why did you move? A lot of different reasons. What do you enjoy most about living here? That’s hard - there are so many things to enjoy! What do you miss most about Hanna? It’s a wonderful community, I miss both the people and living there. What do you like to do in your downtime? What’s downtime? (laughs). I do volunteer for several local organizations, and I sing

Today, the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture, government services, oil and gas, and tourism for its economic prosperity.

HEY KIDS!!

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area.

Newcastle Park: Set on the banks of the Red Deer River, has a beach and walking trails, baseball diamonds, and picnic tables.

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Drumheller joins with other communities across Canada and the world in support of International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Prevention Day on September 9. This day, the ninth day of the ninth month, was chosen to underline how important it is to support women to avoid drinking alcohol in the nine months of pregnancy. FASD is the most common cause of preventable developmental disabilities in Canada. It is estimated that every year nine out of

every 1,000 babies in Canada are born with FASD. Many Canadians are living with the lifelong effects of FASD and do not know it. FASD is an umbrella term describing the range of harms caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. These may include lifelong physical, mental, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities. FASD has a broad social impact, with many individuals requiring life-

long support to cope with the demands of daily life. It can affect anyone, regardless of income, education, community or background. Health, social, educational and justice systems are involved on the community and provincial levels, with the cost to Canada of approximately $5.3 billion per year. Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Don’t make any rash moves in the next few days, Cancer. For whatever reason your common sense meter is a little off. The 2014-2015 season starts this Saturday, September 6 for the Dragons when they head to Calgary to play the Canucks. “We had a really good year last year and we don’t want to fall into a rut. It was such a great ride, we don’t want to sit back on our laurels,” said coach Brian Curran. “We’re trying to get the kids to understand we have quite a mission ahead of us.
