Dalum’s new fire hall receives a Cenovus boost

Council Notes

There is a proposal to ban ALL tobacco brand packaging and introduce plain packs with no branding or graphics, so inSide Drumheller asks: “Do you feel this would make any difference to users?

The Regular Meeting of The Committee of the Whole was rescheduled from Monday, October 13, 2014, to Tuesday, October 14, 2014.

Janet Schrock “No. People will smoke no matter what’s on the package (I‘m against tobacco products).

Kevin Senecal “No. As far as I can tell, me being a smoker, the packages are irrelevant. It’s not preventing or discouraging now.

Cenovus Energy gave a boost to Dalum’s completion of it’s new ďŹ re hall Wednesday, October 15. Dalum volunteer ďŹ re ďŹ ghters were on hand to accept the $100,000 donation for the Dalum Fire Protection Association from Cenovus’ Grasslands Division, which covers southern Alberta. “We’re pleased to be able to help these dedicated ďŹ reďŹ ghters get the

facilities they need to provide the best possible ďŹ re protection to the local community,â€? said Leanne Courchesne of Cenovus’ Community Investment. Dalum was able to move vehicles into the new six bay hall the end of August, and Dalum Fire Chief Albert Jensen said the new hall is fully functional. He adds lots of community support with volunteers and equipment helped keep the costs of building the new hall reasonable.

“The new facility will allow us to properly train our ďŹ reďŹ ghters and maintain operational readiness,â€? said Deputy Fire Chief Mike Ostergard. The Dalum Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with Rockyford, Rosebud and Cluny. Chief Jensen said those three departments and Dalum now have a kilometer’s length of ďŹ re hose between them, enabling the team to draw from any pool of water rather than relying on trucking in water alone. The edge of the district the Dalum Fire Department covers stops just 4 kilometres out of Beiseker.

Chief Administrative Officer Ray Romanetz presented for Council’s consideration the matter of automated water meter readings. ATCO has decided to stop providing water meter reading services in 2015. This is because the new technology ATCO uses can not read the Town of Drumheller’s water meters. The Town brought in a new electronic water meter reading system through Accuflo and new meters through Neptune Meters beginning in 2010. So far, 50 per cent of the water meters have been replaced, at a cost of $700,000 over three years. Council was presented with three cost estimates and timelines for replacing the remaining meters. Most cost effective is replacing remaining old meters in 2014 at a cost of $653,845. The funds would come from water works reserve funds and the 2015 Operating Budget. The potential cost for replacement in 2015 would be almost $717,000. Once ATCO stops meter reading, which could be as early as March 1, 2015, there could be an additional cost of up to $53,862 annually for the Town to manually read any old meters. Administration will draft a request for decision to be brought back to Council. .... Director of Infrastructure Services Allan Kendrick provided an update on the East Coulee Water fill station and Aquaplex water slide. Staff have final design drawings of the fill station to forward to Stantec Engineering in the next few days, and unless there are any other issues, the East Coulee water fill station should be up in 60 days. The actual structure was selected by the community after a pancake breakfast. The Aquaplex water slide is somewhere in the production cycle (being manufactured), and the length of time to clear Canada Customs is unknown. .... After a brief recess, Council moved to an in-camera matter.

“It really is an opportunity for women of all ages to meet people and be part of a generous and worthwhile organization.”

Velichko, co-convenor of the Kneehill constituency, appreciates the acknowledgement, adding “I’m far from the first who has done writing.” She considers herself more of an artist than a writer, although she started her artistic pursuits in general when she was young. Velichko joined the local Women’s Institute when she moved to Drumheller in 2006. “It really is an opportunity for women of all ages to meet people and be part of a generous and worthwhile organization.” She said the organization is geared to support women locally and also internationally. This is the first time she’d entered the WI writing competition, and Velichko said she likes the way pieces are judged in the Women’s Institute competitions - they use what is called a Danish judging system. “It’s not competition against other people, but rather a set criteria.” She explains it’s a points system, and the accumulation of points determines the overall provincial winner. Her story is based on watching wildlife activity on the hillside her and husband can see out of the windows from their house, something they regularly do. On what she describes as a very, very cold morning, she’s watching birds in the yard, and deer across the river an excerpt follows, printed with permission. “Two new animals are romping high on the central hill rim. I assume they are a pair of coyotes, but are so large. Binoculars convince me they are not coyotes at

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Beet Season One of my favorite things about fall is the availability of fresh garden beets. I think they taste almost as good as they are good FOR you! And remember not to throw out the greens! I love making all types of beet salads, but I cannot compete with my favorite one served in a local Drumheller restaurant. Here is a nice, easy, flavorful Spinach Beet Salad to try at home: 4 cups fresh spinach leaves 2 cooked beets, julienned 1 cup fresh mushroom slices 1/2 red onion, sliced 1/2 cup pecans, toasted (you can substitute walnuts) 1/2 log goat cheese, crumbled (if you can find lemon flavored, that is even better!) Dress with a raspberry or balsamic vinaigrette. This salad is good using warm or cool beets.

When I said not to throw out the greens, I found a tasty addition to borscht by tossing in the greens! This ups the nutritional value as well as the flavor!

It was a busy day for Drumheller’s Tim Hortons Terrapins football team, ďŹ tting in a game, a food drive that collected a nice-sized donation for Drumheller’s Salvation Army Food Bank, and a guest coach visit from a Canadian Football League professional quarterback.

The Terrapins had a challenge capitalizing on their plays, and were unable to come back from a heavy scoring ďŹ rst half for the Sylvan Lake Bears. “We got o our game,â€? said coach Corey Miles. “We had a bad start to the game and never got it back.â€? The Coach wonders if the larger crowd for the game, combined with the visit of Calgary Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw the players o their game. Mitchell said the day for him was a great way to show the Calgary Stampeders’ support for Drumheller’s Community Football Association after the recent vandalism. “It’s all about being out here, having fun with the kids, getting to meet them. The main thing is raising money. Raising money to help the football association put back together these locker rooms, the playbooks, so these guys can keep playing football,
