Wednesday was a beautiful day for the “Caged for Kennels” fundraiser at Drumheller Co-op. The annual fundraiser for the Drumheller and District Humane Society raised $7,500 to help care for and find petfriendly homes for abused, neglected or abandoned animals. ley. It is a constant struggle for all to find ways of raising funds to keep any special interest group going. Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears they have gone to the provincial government for funding and it was rejected because of their lack of investment to the cause and now they have simply stepped down to a lower level of government looking for a bailout, again, with no personal investment. I have attended many fundraising events over the years, buying baked goods, raffle tickets for cars, trips, quilts, Christmas crafts and the list goes on, in order to support many groups in town. How has this group tried to help themselves? If this funding is approved I would fully expect the same funding for the non-profit organizations which I support and all the local churches, as funding is an issue for them as well.

I and a number of my friends do not believe that this is the responsibility of the taxpayers of Drumheller, especially for a group with only 12 members. I am sure they do have many hardships finding funding for their group as does every other not-forprofit group within the val-

Position Summary: At the feet of the World’s Largest Dinosaur, the Drumheller Aquaplex continues a long-standing tradition of service as one of the Town of Drumheller’s most treasured community assets. As we move forward with plans to provide enhanced aquatic services to the public, we seek highly energetic, qualified individuals to serve us as Instructors, Lifeguards and Cashiers. Reporting to the Supervisor of Aquatic Operations and Recreation Programs all staff are responsible for providing a safe, clean, professional and friendly environment to ensure that Pool patrons have a positive aquatic experience. Staff paid training in return for a long term commitment to the organization. Further involvement in facility scheduling, programming, pool operations and maintenance are coordinated in collaboration with other town departments. Qualifications Depending on the level of experience, all applicants must demonstrate an interest in acquiring NLS or Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate; LSI or WSI; Standard First Aid and AED Certificate and other certification as required. An effective customer approach and the ability to work in a fast paced environment are essential. The Badlands Search and Rescue (SAR) is hosting a session that could very well save lives. The association is hosting a Rope Rescue Training introduction next weekend. While Badlands Search and Rescue’s area encompasses hectares and hectares of flat farmland, training officer for Drumheller SAR Guy Latour says the unique landscape of the Badlands makes rope rescue training a necessity for SAR and first responders. “A lot of people don’t realize that because of the terrain, there is a huge need for rope rescue,” he said, adding that more than just hills, risk can also encompass unstable ground and the valley’s famous bentonite mud. The introduction session will focus on outdoor slope and high angle search and rescue techniques. Latour will be leading the session, along with Michael Kary of the Alberta Cave Rescue Association. They are inviting their members as well as those who are interested in joining. They have also reached out to area fire depart-

Sessions begin Friday evening where they will be going over the basics with participants. This includes familiarization with the equipment, ba-
sic knots and of course, safety. On Saturday they will focus on techniques and systems. He says safety is built in to rope rescue simply because when using proper techniques every system is designed to withstand 10 times the weight capacity that it is being used for. On Sunday they are heading out to the former Ski Hill to do some practical in the field work, including assembling simple systems. Latour stresses the sessions are simply an introduction and not a

Drumheller RCMP are asking members of the public to help identify a pair of suspects. The surveillance photos from a local convenience store shows two men using stolen credit cards Tuesday morning, September 16, shortly after 5 a.m. The cards were reported stolen during the rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles in Drumheller during the late evening
and early morning of Monday, September 15 and Tuesday, September 16. Items were stolen from a number of unlocked vehicles in town, and two bikes were stolen from a resident’s back yard. Police say the thefts took place in the following areas: • 200 block of 3rd Street East • 300 block of 3rd Street East • 1000 block of 1st Street Southwest

300 block of Riverside Drive East • 600 block of 6th Avenue East • Spruce Drive RCMP request members of the public report any suspicious vehicles, people or activity that may have been seen in the areas where the thefts occurred. They also ask home owners and businesses to review any video footage to check if any im-

Dragons on three game win streak Sarah Devereaux | inSide Drumheller Hats off to the Drumheller Dragons Mitchell Cook who got the Dragons their first hat trick of the 2014/2015 season Tuesday night as the Dragons faced the Okotoks Oilers at the Memorial Arena. They won the game 6-1 giving them a 3-0-0 record thus far in the season.
The action started early as the Dragons’ Dakota Zaharichuk opened scoring one minute and forty-three seconds into the game with an assist from Ethan James. At 9:08 Cook scored the Dragons second goal with assists from Zaharichuk and James ending the first period with a 2-0 score for the home team. The Dragons continued their goal scoring in the

Third period action included goal number five for the Dragons at 9:04 scored by Rory Davidson with assists from Ryan Gevne and Chad Harrison. A second short handed goal at 10:08 gave the Dragons a 6-0 lead and was also the hat trick goal for Cook. We know that and we will deal with it tomorrow. The Senior Girls Dynos volleyball team has kicked off their season with skills development. “Right now we’re focusing on certain skills: passing the ball to our target, or setter, so we can get an attack. So as long as we’re making those improvements each and every game, then it’ll come together,” said DVSS teacher and volleyball coach Dawn Sullivan. The team seems to be enjoying themselves and having fun, said Sullivan. For this senior team, the focus is on developing individual as well as team skills as the season progresses, because there are only three players return-
ing from last year. The team also has to develop setters to fill a vacancy, and Sullivan said players have already improved since the September 2 tryouts, and are working towards seeing more progress with lots of hard work and positive attitudes. The volleyball team was at a tournament in Morrin September 6, and the team improved with each game they played, said the coach. Official team practices are three times a week, and there are six tournaments scheduled for this year. Depending how they do during the season and at regionals, the Senior Girls Dynos volleyball team could have a season that goes until the end of November.
