Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen attend Ottawa’s National War Memorial to lay flowers in honour of Corporal Nathan Cirillo. Corporal Crillo was murdered Wednesday, October 22, as he stood guard at the War Memorial, by an assailant who then entered the Canadian Parliament building, and was subsequently shot and killed by Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers. Sections of Ottawa near Parliament were evacuated or locked down as RCMP and Ottawa Police searched for more reported gunmen. RCMP and Ottawa Police Service held a press conference at National Headquarters in Ottawa Thursday to speak on the matter and the ongoing investigation. photo courtesy Prime Minister’s Office.

“Canada will never be intimidated,” says Harper

Canadians watched in shock Wednesday morning as the tragic events on Parliament Hill unfolded. The shock turned to pain, the pain to anger, the anger to sorrow and the sorrow to resolve.

Canadian Reservist Nathan Cirillo was shot and killed while standing guard at the Canadian National War Memorial. Minutes later House of Commons Sergeant-atArms Kevin Vickers shot the assailant. All day the area was under tight security with Members of Parliament

“A silver of Light: Three Americans Imprisoned in Iran” by Shane Bauer, Joshua Fattal, Sarah Shourd

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Book Columnist

This is the poignant memoir of three young American friends who were hiking in Kurdistan, Iraq. They were duped into crossing the border into Iran, resulting in being captured by the border patrol. The trio spent two years as political prisoners in Tehran’s “Evin prison” and deliver this harrowing account of their survival. The three voices alternately tell the story of their interrogations, rebellions, hungerstrikes, trials, alliances, bravery and resourcefulness - but most importantly, their strong will to survive and gain their freedom. The families back home in the U.S. worked endlessly in their campaign towards freeing their loved ones. The unbreakable bond of family and friendship is most evident throughout the book. Since reading the story, I have enjoyed watching video clips of the three authors describing this harrowing tale. The reality of it really hits home. Today, Sarah is an advocate for prisoners’ rights and focuses on awareness of prolonged solitary confinement in U.S. prisons. 43h

RURAL WATER TREATMENT (Province Wide)

Town replacing water meters earlier than scheduled Michele Scott| inSide Drumheller

Drumheller’s Town Council voted to dip into its reserve fund and the 2015 budget to replace water meters in town. The move will result in over $63,000 in cost savings for the Town of Drumheller. At their Monday, October 20 regular meeting, Council approved over $650,000 to replace the older residential water meters at the end of this year and into 2015. The town has been phasing in the installation of new meters that can be read electronically with the Town’s system, and has about half of the installations completed.

ATCO initially informed the Town it would discontinue readings on the older meters. After the Town expressed concerns, ATCO agreed mid-October to continue readings into 2015, with no price increase from the current 30 cents per meter charge to the Town. Deciding to move forward with the replacement project earlier than planned will result in the savings for the Town. The estimate from the contractor Neptune Technology to replace the meters later in 2015 was over $717,000. Council will be budgeting to return the money to the water works reserve fund at $250,000 over the next two-and-a-half years.

Ken URQUHART Age: 54 Occupation: School bus driver 18 months. Retired from CP Rail in Calgary. What do you most enjoy about retirement? I don’t miss the stress or work. Bus driving - it’s fun. Little kids will always be little kids. What made you decide to drive school bus? Prompting from my wife, Wilma, after I’d been home about four-and-ahalf months. How long have you lived here? Seven years, before that on an acreage toward Rosebud. What do you miss about living there? The quiet & the darkness. What do you enjoy most about living here? I enjoy not being in traffic, and enjoy the slower pace. There’s a whole list of negatives I’ve gotten away from with living here. What are some hobbies and interests? Photography. I’m a news junkie, both commercial and alternate news. And the Halloween display.

How did your Halloween front yard design start? It started out as a few skeletons and grew. It gets a little bigger each year. I have animatronics and cobwebs I add closer to Halloween. That must be a bit costly... I spend tens of dollars. Most of the elements are hand made-some wood, a lot are styrofoam. How did you learn to make the display? Looking things up online, and watching shows. Favourite Halloween candy? I like all of it. If we buy it too early, we have to buy it twice. What’s your favourite holiday? I like Christmas, but by design we don’t make a big deal out of it. What is a favourite winter past time? I like to write fiction. Science fiction and horror. Final thought? Trick or Treat.

“The division’s overall excellence is attributed to CTR Catholic’s dedicated and hard-working staff, teachers and students.” Scott Morrison

(403) 823-3784 and ask for Ray.

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools (CTR Catholic) achieved the highest rate possible, representing performance in the 95th percentile, according to provincial diploma exam results released recently. Students across the division continue to excel on provincial diplomas examinations in Grade 12, outperforming the provincial average by 5.7%, with an overall pass rate of 91%.

QUOTE

According to Superintendent Scott Morrison, the results were possible thanks to expanded opportunities for students to learn, extra-help sessions, and intervention as a focus across the division’s 15 schools. “The academic excellence at CTR Catholic comes from the collective belief that our students are capable of great things, and the belief that the faculty are capable of helping students reach their potential,” said Morrison. The overall excellence rate on diploma exams was 24.4%, with CTR Catholic students out-

performing the provincial average of by 3.4%. Students in CTR Catholic out performed both provincial pass rates and excellence rates on nine of 10 diploma exams including English 30-1, English 30-2, Social 301, Social 30-2, French Language Arts 30-1, Math 30-1, Math 30-2, Biology 30, and Chemistry 30. Students were very near to provincial averages in Physics 30 (below by 1.3% and 1.4% on pass and excellence rates respectively). Amongst all these results, student performance in English 30 - 1 really stands out. In English 30-1, CTR Catholic students also ranked extremely high with 96.1% of students passing the diploma exam, outperforming the provincial mark by 9%. Excellence rates also continue to climb with 17.6% of CTR Catholic students earning that distinction, some 5.9% higher than the provincial average. Mr. Morrison attributes these results to the Grade 1 to 12 remedial reading programs and the division-wide literacy initiative focused on vastly increasing reading volume in English Language Arts from Grades K-12. “The division’s overall excellence is attributed to CTR Catholic’s dedicated and hard-working staff, teachers and students,” said Morrison.

A pre-trip research project will have students given a soldier’s name and them finding out all the information they can, and locating the soldier’s grave site in Europe. The group will also visit the trenches soldiers fought in. Hemming said the trip will continue to Dieppe, including a visit to Juno Beach, and the trip winds up with sight seeing in Paris. “It’s an opportunity for kids to walk in the place where history was made, and for history to really come alive,” said Hemming. Fellow teachers Dawn Sullivan and Brad Teske will be making the trip to Europe with Lynn Hemming and the school group. A trip information for students who will be in grade 9 through 12 in 2017 and their parents is scheduled for October 30 in Kaleidescoope Theatre at 7 p.m.

Christmas Miracle moves online Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A seasonal tradition where Drumheller residents have always stepped up to the plate is the Annual Morgan Jayne Christmas Miracle, and this year it is being launched into space… Cyberspace, that is. The Morgan Jayne Project and the Christmas Miracle have made Drumheller a household word in the Roatan. The project, named after Fred Makowecki’s daughter, has saved dozens of lives supplying infant formula to stop the transmission of aids between mother and child. Over the last eight years, its supporters don’t forget that it is Christmas, and have shipped thousands of pounds of gifts and supplies to families who have never experienced a Christmas morning with gifts. The one prohibitive feature of this program however is the cost of shipping. Makowecki explains that last year each box they shipped cost in

the area of $60 to get to an address in Florida, where it was then shipped overseas. This year the price was looking closer to $90. This adds up to thousands of dollars. He felt it was a shame to spend in the area of $10,000 in shipping. “This was about a 35 per cent increase, we identified that we need to make changes, we need another solution,” he said. So they devised a plan. This year they are administrating the Christmas Miracle online through Amazon.com. The process is quite simple. The wish list is posted on the Morgan Jayne Project website and Facebook. It lists some of the families that are in need. There is a link to the e-commerce site Amazon.com. There, supporters can simply purchase the items requested. The list captures the spirit of the program. In September, the children write their letters. They are simply asking what they want for Christmas.

“This is not a day to worry about supporting their family, this is so they can be a kids for a day,” said Makowecki. Through this, the items will be shipped, almost always free of charge to Florida, where they can be brought to the Roatan.

Makowecki says not only does this make it easier and save thousands of dollars, but it also leaves more on the table for other local charities. Another benefit of the list is that it eliminates duplication.

The Annual Christmas Miracle for families in Roatan is heading into cyberspace, making easier for those wishing to make

Terrapins post-season starts Saturday at home The Drumheller Terrapins are marching into the playoffs in their first season on the field. The Terrapins are hosting Innisfail in round one this Saturday morning at DVSS field. The team finished their inaugural season with a 3-2-1 record. The one tie came last Saturday when the Terrapins were in Red Deer where they battled to a 0 -0 finish. “That was a defensive battle so it was a good experience,” said coach Cory Miles. “We stopped them and they stopped us. Red Deer is a good team. Both teams got close and

were on each other’s 10 yard lines, but just couldn’t push through.”

An injury to a Terrapins full back didn’t help as the team made adjustments. The Terrapins ended up in fifth place out of 11 teams in the league. A Drumheller high school runner achieved a personal best time for his 5k run at Strathcona Tweedsmuir School. Drumheller Valley Secondary School student Sam Brown, 16, ran his 5k at a provincial level competition October 18, achieving his milestone with a time of 20 minutes, and 59 seconds. The terrain Brown ran on was a little different from what he expected. “The course, which is found on trails surrounding the Tweedsmuir School campus,” said Brown, “had many more hills than I had anticipated.” This was the first provincial championship for the sixteen-year-old, who said he appreciates the work that goes

into the provincial races and notes what a large milestone it can be to attend. ”It was a wonderfully fulfilling experience,” said Brown. He adds he completed the race with some satisfaction because his finish time to close was close to the twenty minute mark he was aiming for. The young runner had started running about four years ago to help in his recovery from a broken leg. He found himself enjoying the sport and carried on with it, and has not missed a day of running since January 2013. Brown’s considering attending “The Grizzly”, a 50 kilometre run recommended to him for beginners that want to get into ultra marathons.
