Round Up Your B ill for the month of October To Help the Titans

It was a beautiful afternoon for oil spill training exercises on the Red Deer River October 1. Western Canadian Spill Services Ltd. (WCSS) held a day of training at Newcastle Beach Wednesday, attended by 90 representatives from member oil and gas companies. The day included presentations and dryland training, and finished with a mock oil spill clean-up exercise. Drumheller is part of WCSS’s “Area O” that includes Three Hills and Trochu, and stretches out to Stettler, Innisfail, and past Hanna. Inset left: Duane Bolin, Area Chair for WCSS, at the exercise, and bottom right, a WCSS boat monitors the deployment of the boom on the river. inSide photos by Michele Scott

Fire Prevention Week Sunday Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Fire Department is kicking off Fire Prevention Week with an open house this Sunday at the Drumheller Fire Hall. Fire Chief Bill Bachynski said they are inviting Emergency Services from the area including the RCMP, EMS and the Munson Fire Department. There will be representation from Drum-

heller’s Rosedale and East Coulee halls. Bachynski says this is a great chance to come out and meet some of the men and women who play an important role in the community, often putting their lives at risk for the service of others. “We encourage everyone to come down so they can see what we do and check out the equipment, answer some questions and see

Slick email scam using tax man’s name Michele Scott| inSide Drumheller

Drumheller RCMP can be reached at (403) 8237590. Residents can learn to recognize scams through the website of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/ english/home.html. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre collects information and criminal intelligence for telemarketing, advance fee fraud letters, internet fraud and I.D theft complaints.

Drumheller RCMP are warning residents of a slick e-mail scam that is making the rounds disguised as coming from the Canada Revenue Agency. RCMP say a resident received an email from what was made to look like the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), advising they wanted to deposit money into this persons account. The recipient was instructed in the email to click on a link which brought them to what appeared to be the Revenue Agency’s website, and asked for information such as mother’s maiden name, social insurance number, and credit card information. RCMP advise Revenue Canada would not send any emails out for the purpose of depositing money into their accounts. Police ask anyone receiving a similar email to not open the attachment nor provide any information, and to report these frauds or any attempts to the police.

TOWN OF DRUMHELLER

Drumheller Fire Department Reminds Drumheller Residents: Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives! Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire. That’s the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!” Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, Drumheller Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and testing them monthly. According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “In a fire, seconds count,” said Bruce Wade Deputy Fire Chief. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign includes the following smoke alarm messages: • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. • Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. • Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. The Drumheller Fire Department will be hosting activities and Meet your Emergency Services during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!” Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about the importance of working smoke alarms and testing them monthly. The Drumheller Fire Department will be hosting at the Drumheller Fire Hall October 5 from 2:00 pm till 4:00 pm. An open house along with RCMP and AHS ambulance . Drop down and have a hot dog and pop and pick up some information pamphlets about smoke alarms and “Working Smoke Alarms Saves Lives”, visit NFPA’s Web site at www.firepreventionweek.org. If you can’t make it to Munich, the Badlands Community Facility is hosting its second Oktoberfest this Saturday, October 4. Kim Suntjens of the BCF Fundraising Cabinet said they’re providing two new things for Oktoberfesters this year. The first is the offering of a full,German-inspired buffet supper included in the ticket price. Suntjens said a caterer will be offering a variety of traditional foods, including blaukraut (red cabbage), rouladen, different types of bratwurst, and homemade pretzels. There will also be a selection of German beers and ciders to purchase for the evening. Included in the price of a ticket is a

drive-home service, provided by Dinosaur Valley Express. Oktoberfest came about as a creative fundraising idea to help support the BCF. The inaugural Oktoberfest in 2013 was sold out, and Suntjens said this year’s event is about three-quarters sold. “It’s just one of the many events we hope to put on this year,” said Suntjens, “It’s supporting a great cause.” This year marks the 181st year for the original Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, which was a five day celebration of the marriage of Prince Ludwig (anglicized: Louis) to Princess Therese of SaxonyHildburghausen. Thousands head to the modern Munich Oktoberfest, which begins the third week in September and runs for sixteen days.

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Book Columnist

My book club is a busy bunch of ladies, and therefore we were unable to get together this month of September. I read so many good books this summer, I thought I would share a few until we get together next month to discuss our designated one. Firstly, “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Greene was one that I found hard to put down. It is in the “Young Adult” category, as are many of our favorite books! This story of two teenagers falling in love and battling different forms of cancer is tragic and sensitive. To me, the most profound part of the book was having the pair write each other’s eulogies. I cannot imagine a more painful task than that. Since reading the book, I watched the movie version and was impressed at how closely it followed the storyline. This doesn’t happen often enough, in my opinion! This book can best be described as a tear-jerker reminding us how fragile and valuable life really is. Another very sensitive book was, “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. I was pleasantly surprised after I finally decided I could read a story as told through the eyes of a dog. This is one that really tugs at your heart-strings. One of my favorite concepts this dog, Enzo, has is the fact that he can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man. Yet another tear-jerker, this is also an uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope. A third book, on a much lighter note, was “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion. It was a nice change to be laughing out loud rather than crying out loud, as in the previous two books! Any fans of Sheldon Cooper in “the Big Bang Theory” will love the main character, Don, who sets out to find himself a suitable wife by way of a lengthy, detailed questionnaire. And then Rosie comes along, possessing all the characteristics that Don has hoped to filter out in his “wife project.” We can see that the power of human connection often defies all odds.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
