OPINION

Ukraine students learn about Drumheller Submitted | inSide Drumheller When Mayor Terry Yemen was in The Ukraine to observe the election last spring, his translator was a university professor who taught second year English. He proposed a essay contest about Drumheller for a small scholarship. The following is the winning essay by Ann Mormil.

The Town of Drumheller Kelsey Scott, 6 “Playing outside - going down the slides.”

Ali Vickers, 6 “Having lunch, eating my tuna and pickle sandwiches (but today I have tuna and crackers).”

Hayley Bagley, 6 “Probably playing on the computer, going onto “Starfall” (reading game).”

Every city or town of the world has a charm of its own. My native city, Lviv, isn’t only the capital of Western Ukraine. It is Ukraine’s most romantic city, full of little courtyards where couples can fall in love as they feel the ancient architecture. What is the town of Drumheller known for? Why should its citizens be proud of it? What architectural ‘treasures’ can be seen in the Drumheller Valley? My essay holds the key to all these questions and even more. In the heart of the Canadian Badlands in Southern Alberta the town full of spectacular sceneries, diverse facilities and star-

tling contrasts has risen above. It is Drumheller that is commonly known as the Dinosaur Capital of the World! Joseph Tyrrell – a Canadian geologist and mining consultant was searching for coal deposits along the river, instead, he discovered dinosaur (Albertosaurus) bones. Canada’s Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Alberta was named in his honour. Dinosaurs are nature’s celebrities. Since my childhood I admired movies about them, a lot of my friends had dinosaur toys and were staging battles between plastic Tyrannosaurus – king of the tyrant dinosaurs – and a long-necked Apatosaurus model. The Royal Tyrrell Museum houses the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs. It was set up in 1985. So, if you are a dinosaur fan, the museum is open for you around the clock. The zest of the town is the statue of the World’s Largest Dinosaur – Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex). You can climb the giant T-rex and admire the badlands from inside its mouth. Isn’t it breathtaking? By the way, the World’s Largest Dinosaur

is actually a female dinosaur. She stands 86 feet tall and is 151 feet long. The statue is constructed almost entirely out of steel!

However, the Drumheller Valley can brag about other gems. I was impressed by Drumheller’s Little Church that has six one-person pews and a pulpit. Never before have I seen such a tiny church! It was designed as a place of worship and mediation and not just as

Members gave a resounding “yes” in favour of the amalgamation of Chinook Credit Union and First Calgary Financial. At special general meetings held earlier this week, Chinook Credit Union and First Calgary Financial members voted yes to the amalgamation that will see the two credit unions join operations into a new regionally-focused credit union. First Calgary Financial members voted on September 8, receiving 95% (280 votes) in favour of amalgamating and 5%

(14 votes) not in favour. Chinook Credit Union members voted on September 10, receiving 88% (166 votes) in favour of amalgamating and 12% (21 votes) not in favour. The combined result was 91.5% in favour of amalgamating – which exceeded the two-thirds majority vote requirement. Pending regulatory approval, the two organizations will operate as divisions of Connect First Credit Union effective November 1, 2014, serving 100,000 members across 27 branches in 14 communities across Southern Alberta. “We’re thrilled with

a tourist attraction. Over 400,000 people come to Drumheller each year! Drumheller is a great place to visit and even a better place to live. To be frank, I’m a little bit envious of those who live there. The area’s moderate climate, fresh air, recreational facilities, lower cost of living and relaxed atmosphere make for an excellent quality of life! Also, Drumheller offers excellent health facilities. Another tourist attraction of Drumheller is the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. I would like to visit one! The Passion Play takes you 2000 years back in time. It depicts the Passion of Jesus Christ performed annually in Drumheller, Alberta, and is staged outdoors in a naturally occurring amphitheatre in the hills of the Drumheller valley. I wish I could be there and see such a performance with about 300 actors and musicians. You’ve never seen anywhere oddly shaped rock-formations similar to petrified giants which

stand up to 20 feet tall. At last you may see them in Drumheller! They’re known as Hoodoos. There’s a legend that they come alive at night to protect the land around them by hurling stones at intruders. If I saw them, I would run away. I’m really afraid of bizarre and magical things. All in all, Drumheller is the town worth visiting. Its citizens say: “Come visit for a day, and you could stay for a lifetime”. You’ll never find yourself bored there. This town inspired me so much that I decided to write a short poem. Please, don’t judge me harsh. The town standing on the bank of Red Deer River, The town where dinosaurs used to live, The town of rolling fields and steep, dry coulees, It will amaze you by its scenes where zest is, It’s steeped in history, it has the flavor of its own, It is Drumheller, the best in the entire world!

“Our goal is to raise at least $8,000, said Peggy Ginger of the Drumheller and District Humane Society. The action all takes place at the Drumheller Coop parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The concept is simple. Each of the participants is locked in a cage until they can convince their friends, colleagues or coworkers to pony up to the tune of $1,000. Throughout the event, they can be subject to a number of games or challenges. Local businesses have also gotten into the act by sponsoring some of the games. Along with the event, the community is invited down to enjoy a barbecue lunch with all the proceeds going to the Humane Society. WORKS “Awesome country and amazing history, hospitable folks.” Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Every year InSide Drumheller holds the Great Drumheller Dinosaur Challenge, not only a great way to spend an afternoon, it provides wonderful feedback from visitors on their valley experience.

Summer came to an abrupt end this week, with one day under a blistering sun and the next behind a blustery wind. It was an exciting year for the valley. Many attractions saw record-breaking numbers. There was also the introduction of Tough Mudder weekend. Inside Drumheller had an exciting year, launching www. drumhellertourism.com, providing residents and visitors all the latest information on what is happening in the valley. One aspect of the summer publication which has not changed, is our annual Great Dinosaur Challenge. This is a contest where visitors and residents can identify the locale of the valley’s famous dinosaurs for a chance to win a gift certificate from any of Drumhellertourism.com’s advertisers. More than just a fun way to spend an afternoon in the valley, we provide a space for comments and perceptions of the valley. They are also a lot of fun to read. This year, judging by the entries, while there were visitors from all over North America, it was an Alberta Break kind of season for the valley. The bulk of entries are from in-province. While it appears that Calgarians are aware of what the valley has to offer, and come in droves, there were

more entries than in previous years from northern points including Red Deer, Edmonton and Grande Prairie. From outside the province we noticed the next largest group of entries came from British Columbia. And while throngs of Albertans head west to enjoy the unique landscapes of B.C., a group from Nelson, B.C., commented about loving the valley, and the river, while one from Vancouver described the area as ‘Awesome country and amazing history, hospitable folks.” As usual, there were many youngsters who entered and the fascination with dinosaurs always ranks high. One visitor from, Odessa, Saskatchewan summed up the whole experience: “My favourite part of Drumheller was seeing the dinosaur museum, playing at the splash park and water fountain, going inside the big dinosaur and doing this scavenger hunt.” The quality of events Drumheller puts on is certainly becoming an attraction in itself. One visitor from Cold Lake tells us “We’ve been to Drumheller every year since DinoFest started and we always have a wonderful time. The best part is we spend most of our time on foot because of all the great walking trails and scenery.” And the valley continues to cultivate repeat visitors. A visitor from Calgary said, “Our family really likes Drumheller. We’ll be back to visit here again.” Another from Edmonton, said. “We enjoyed our visit on the May Long Weekend very much. We’ve booked our cabin at River Grove for 2015!”

Walmart has taken out a building permit to repair the damaged wall on their property. Mayor Yemen said the company is planning to start the work later into September, weather permitting. After the initial start date this spring lapsed without repairs, the Town of Drumheller spent time trying to get

Walmart to have the repairs completed this summer. With no construction again planned, the Town sent a letter to Walmart asking for action, with specific timelines set out to the retailer. The Town was also considering court action as a step if Walmart was further unwilling to comply with the municipality. Safety, the instability of the ground, and avoiding

Walmart put fencing up in August around the crumbling retaining wall that borders the store’s parking lot. The Town said the retailer has committed to starting wall repairs in September.

Green thumb grows fruit tree Drumheller’s Irene Christofalos stands in front of her lemon tree in the yard at home. The uncommonly oversized lemon shown on her right yields around two cups of juice. The black spots on it are hail damage from the July 19 storm in town. The tree lost 15 immature lemons and was battered in the storm, but is sprouting new fruit again. Irene said the tree was started from a cutting brought over from Greece more than fifteen years ago. The tree is moved indoors to winter.

The Mayor said this will be the third time Walmart has had to repair the large retaining wall the borders the store parking lot. Construction costs are estimated at half a million dollars.

Referees needed for upcoming hockey season Hockey season is gearing up and Drumheller has a tradition of great action on the ice. But great hockey is dependent on a number of things; great attitudes, great coaching and great officials. Drumheller has a his-

tory of great officiating, right up to today, and there is always a need for more referees. “Good hockey doesn’t exist without good officials,” said local referee Greg Lemieux. “We need good officials all the time. If there are no officials, the games do not happen. Something we have seen in Drum-

heller over the last couple years is we get new officials, but we have trouble keeping them.” He said while they have officials start at the lower age brackets, they often don’t move up to officiate for bantams or midget. Lemieux explains that typically they have over 20 officials, however in the last couple years they have had to pull referees from out of town. The lack of referees can affect the pocketbook of the league. If officials have to be brought in from other communities, they have to pay for travel. Lemieux says that refereeing can allow you to see the game from a different perspective, keep in shape and earn a few dollars on the side. Often they are father–son teams on the ice

Bantam Titans learn from early loss Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Bantam Titans had a tough go in their home opener, however coaches feel they saw some bright spots to help the team move forward.

The Bantam Titans hosted the Rage from the Cochrane area last Saturday afternoon and met a formidable opponent, falling 19-0. Despite this, coach Andrew Zackrisson said there were some great efforts on the field. “Our defense held up pretty good, I thought,” said Zackrisson. “We had a

couple mental errors, but defense was definitely our strong side today.” Simply put, he said the offense has to start putting some points on the board. He sees room for improvement for the young team. “We have a lot of new players who just joined the team this year, and it is a learning curve and we are going to work on it,” he said. One of those areas is learning what to expect on the field. “One of those areas is to keep the ref ’s flag in his pocket, we have to work on lessening the mental errors and simple penalties like procedures and offside,” said Zackrisson. He adds he is proud that while it did get heated towards the end, he said the Titans kept it clean. This Saturday, the Titans will be on the road to play Rocky Mountain House.
