Immersive Patient Care
This two-week elective provides immersive exposure to various aspects of Hospital Medicine through direct patient care.
Experienced Hospitalist
Interaction
Residents will gain valuable experience through interaction with experienced hospitalists.
Observing Healthcare Leadership
Residents will have the opportunity to observe healthcare leadership dynamics.
Objectives: Enhance Your Clinical Practice/Leadership Skillset
Comprehensive Patient Care
Develop proficiency in managing patients on the ADS service, developing comprehensive care plans and ensuring smooth transitions of care.
Effective Communication & Collaboration
Hone communication skills by interacting with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, fostering a collaborative approach to care.
Leadership in Healthcare
Participate in leadership meetings and engage with Hospital Medicine leadership to understand administrative aspects and explore leadership opportunities within healthcare.
Time Commitment and Prerequisites
Time Commitment
The elective spans two weeks, requiring weekday attendance from 8 am to 5 pm. No weekend, overnight, or call coverage is required, ensuring a balanced schedule for residents.
Prerequisites
An initial Zoom meeting with Dr. Eric Barna is mandatory for interested residents. This elective experience is only offered to later PGY 2 or PGY 3 residents.
Evaluation: Assessing Your Progress
Formal Evaluation
Your performance and understanding of Hospital Medicine concepts will be evaluated by the supervising Hospitalist through the residency elective evaluation form at the end of the elective.
Professional Development
This feedback will contribute to your overall residency evaluation and professional development.
Exploring Evolving Landscapes in Hospital Medicine
Co-Management Models
Experience the evolving landscape of shared patient care between hospitalists and surgical or specialty colleagues.
Oncology Care
Gain exposure to the unique challenges and rewards of managing hospitalized oncology patients, including symptom management and end-of-life care.
Nighttime Hospital Operations
Observe the dynamics of nighttime hospital operations, understanding patient flow, urgent care needs, and decision-making processes during offpeak hours.
Onboarding Checklist
Service Line Overview
All residents participating in the elective will complete a 30 minute virtual onboarding session with Dr. Eric Barna approximately one month prior to the experience to review key operational elements of the ADS service, working with APP's and explore key handoff elements on the service line. We look forward to having you on our elective.
