clothing including long sleeves and pants to help deter their bite.
Do you have standing water around your yard? Fill in any holes or depressions that may be holding water. Maintain fountain pumps and pool water quality to eliminate breeding grounds. Also check any containers and eliminate those that may hold rain water around your house. Watch out for leaky faucets and areas
that hold water around drains. If you have an area of standing water that cannot be drained, use bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (bti), which is a biological larvicide that prevents mosquitoes from developing into breeding, biting adults. As always, read the instructions and use as directed. If you have an ornamental pond you can look into adding mosquito-eating fish such as Gambusia also known as Mosquitofish.
Mosquitos are weak flyers so placing a fan on your patio helps to keep them away. If you have outdoor patio lights, switching from a regular bulb to a yellow “bug light” helps detract them from gathering around the lights.
As always, be aware of your surroundings and plan ahead. A little planning can go a long way to ensure your summer fun and sun is enjoyed to the fullest!

Girls Softball Complex -
This project was included as one of seven approved projects in the 2015 Type B dedicated sales tax election that was voted for by Deer Park residents. $3 million from Type B sales tax fund this project. The City selected Tandem Services as the general contractor and Halff Associates as the architect for this project. Construction began in January 2018. The project will be completed in May of 2019 with the exception of turf establishment. The complex has been renovated to include four lighted ballfields, two practice fields, batting cages, maintenance facility, additional parking, and a new concession and restroom facility. One of the first tournaments to be hosted at the renovated complex will be the Pony International Girls Softball World Series in July 2019.
New Soccer Complex - This project is another one of the seven approved projects in the 2015 Type B dedicated sales tax election. The project is being funded with $4 million from Type B sales tax. The City of Deer Park selected Halff Associates as the architect and Tandem Services as the general contractor. Construction began in January 2018. The project is nearing completion with the exception of the turf establishment. The Soccer complex is scheduled to open for league play in August of 2019. The new complex includes four new lighted soccer fields, two practice soccer fields, a parking lot, shade canopy, drainage and a concession and restroom facility.
Community Center – A building assessment of the Community Center and Gym was conducted by an architectural firm. The engineers have concluded
Project upDATE Parks & Recreation
that, due to structural concerns, permanent repairs to the Community Center structure would necessarily be highly invasive, cause significant disruption to the use of the building, and lack 100% certainty. Renovations to the building would also be very expensive, so much so that replacement versus repair of the Community Center should be considered. Three joint workshops with City Council, the Deer Park Community Development Corporation, and the Parks and Recreation Commission, as well as the architect, have been conducted to review and discuss the possibility of constructing a new Community Center rather than attempting to renovate the existing facility.
Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects was engaged to assist the city in developing a feasibility plan for a new facility. City staff visited approximately 8-10 Recreational facilities in December of 2018 and January of 2019 collected data that included programming ideas, costs, square footage and operations information. On Monday, January 28, 2019, a joint meeting with City Council, DPCDC, and Parks and Recreation Commission was held to discuss and review the past meetings, report on the facility visits, pool option considerations, pool assessment findings, and discussion about cost recovery. Staff was assigned to report at the next joint meeting with the City Council, DPCDC, and Parks and Recreation Commission on February 25, 2019. The report included information on current programming at the Community
Center, staff recommendations for future programming, assessment of programming from the architect, Brinkley Sargent Wiginton, and cost recovery of the Community Center. Additional information was requested to be at presented to the boards and an additional meeting was scheduled to be conducted on March 25, 2019. Due to the recent industrial incident, the joint meeting that was scheduled for March 25, 2019 has been postponed until a later date that has yet to be determined. The additional information, assessments and reports is being administered at that time.
Hike and Bike Trails
– This is one of the seven projects that was approved at a Special Election for Type B Economic Development Sales and Use Tax Proposition in May 2015. On January 28, 2019 the DPCDC approved the recommendation to take to City Council to authorize the agreement with Burditt Consultants, LLC to begin the development of hike and bike trail project with a site feasibility study and implementation plan to include cost estimates, a phasing strategy, and schematic design of trail alignments. On February 5, 2019 at the City Council meeting, City Council approved the hiring of the firm to development the site feasibility plan and implementation plan with cost estimates, phasing strategy and schematic design

of trail alignments for the hike and bike trail project. Burditt Consultants LLC has been contracted to administer architectural services for this project. A Committee has been developed that will consist of members from the Community. The first meeting to take place in April of 2019.
Deer Park Nature
Preserve - The city funded $500,000 for the Nature Preserve Project and then applied for and received a Texas Parks and Wildlife Grant in the maximum amount of $400,000. The project will consist of a parking area, decomposed granite trails, a gateway structure, as well as solar lighting along the walking trails. RVI was the project architect. The City awarded construction of the project to Millis Development and Construction, LLC.,which was completed in August of 2019. In addition, the wetlands mitigation project has been awarded to a contractor and the Mitigation project will begin in late April or Early May of 2019.
A conceptual plan envisions Phases 2 and 3, which include an education center, outdoor learning opportunities, and more, pending future funding availability.
New Playground
Equipment – New playground equipment has recently been at Parkview Park (109 Brookhollow Drive) and Big Bend Park (1600 Big Bend Lane). We will have a Ribbon Cutting for Parkview Park on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 and Big Bend Park in May 2019. Come out to these neighborhood parks and enjoy the outdoors on these new playgrounds.
North East Hike and Bike
Trail Project – Funded by a grant with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Federal pass thru funds; the Department has hired RVI for architectural services needed to complete a section of the Hike and Bike Trails. This section of trail will stretch south from Park Green Park towards the Deer Park Nature Preserve, Wynfield Park, and Runningbrook Park and connect these areas located on the Northeast side of Deer Park. Project to begin construction in towards the end of 2019.
