Welcome to the June issue of your guide to what’s on and what’s good in Brighton and Hove. As the summer really gets started, we’re so excited to share with you our best picks of what’s in the city this month. The legendary Dionne Warwick is at the Brighton Dome this month and of course, we had to feature her - recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, to name just one of the very many that she has received, she truly is an icon of twenty-first century music. See her at the Dome on 8th June for what’s sure to be a fantastic show.

Of course, there’s plenty of other amazing stuff going on too - check our Events listing for the best of the bunch. This month sees the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations (hello extra bank holiday!) and if you’re in the mood to celebrate, there’s the Silent Disco party by the Angel of Peace statue or the plethora of Brighton pubs to celebrate in! We have a bumper issue of restaurant reviews this month - check out our reviews of the famous Terre a Terre and a new American diner in Hove. We also enjoyed some marvellous cocktails at Burnt Orange, somewhere that we’re always happy to pay a visit to! We are also very pleased to feature a beautiful Buddhist centre, Bodhisattva Kadampa Meditation Centre on Lansdowne Road. Brighton Fringe Comedy Showcase This is a real must-see for any comedy fan - a showcase of the best new comedians at the 2022 Brighton Fringe. Head to the Komedia on 1st of June to see the next generation of comedy talent. The Comedy Showcase includes comedian-activist Aruhan Galieva, absurdist-comedian Freddie Hayes and other new comedy acts from the festival. Hosted by Luke Rollason, this is a treat for the funny bones. Tickets are £6.00.

Silent Disco Jubilee Street Party Billed as the Greatest Fitness Party by the sea, the Silent Disco Jubilee Street Party is a dance celebration not to be missed! Treasure This Place is a very special poetry installation across Brighton and Hove.

Poets and spoken-word artists have composed pieces about different parts of the city and audio recordings of their work are accessible via QR codes, waiting to be discovered in each area. Ghost Walk of The Lanes Feeling spooky? Take a Ghost Walk of the Lanes - a tour of Brighton’s oldest and according to some, most haunted quarter. The tour guides have plenty of historical facts, comic stories and perhaps a few surprises. This tour has received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence - check it out on 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th June at 7.30PM, meeting at the Druids Head pub in Brighton. Hold Me Until The Bus Comes Hold Me Until The Bus Comes is the premier exhibition of work by Brighton artist Tony Felstead.

He has produced a collection of urban tree acrylic paintings, accompanied by soundscape recordings arranged by Simon Smith. This work is both a love letter to the trees in our city and testimony to the passing lives and voices that surround them. The exhibition is at 35 North Gallery, 3rd - 25th June.

Brighton Food & Maker’s Market Paper Daisy Events are very pleased to bring you the Brighton Food & Maker’s Market! Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales are ‘Together Again, Again’ in this new show for 2022. Jinkx Monsoon, winner of Ru Paul’s Drag Race season 5 and her musical partner Major Scales have toured the world with their original cabaret shows.

Set in the year 2065, the show sees the two in a strange future, still working out their differences. See them at the Theatre Royal Brighton on 7th June.

Misshapes: The Making of Tatty Devine Iconic jewellery brand Tatty Devine are at the Hove Museum and Art Gallery with this touring exhibition. Misshapes: The Making of Tatty Devine looks at the history of the beloved brand and features over 100 pieces from their twenty year journey. This is a lovely insight into one of the most contemporary and unique jewellery companies around today. The exhibition is running until early September and entry is free.

Head to the Brighton Open Air Theatre for an evening of comedy on the 17th of June.

Stand Up Under The Stars is a show featuring a fabulous line up of comedy stars with a headline set from Kerry Godliman, star of the record-breaking Netflix hit After Life. Legendary six-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist Dionne Warwick’s One Last Time Farewell Tour of the UK and Europe, comes to Brighton Dome this month on June 6.

The singer’s enviable career spans decades, she has released a string of hits and best-selling albums, winning the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. Her extensive music catalogue a timeless reminder of (largely) unsurpassed talent, but where did the epic journey begin?

At the age of 14, Dionne started a gospel group with her sister and cousin, The Gospolaires. The trio received widespread recognition after winning an amatuer competition and subsequently sang backup for some of the most prominent artists of the time including; Dinah Washington.

In 1959 the star won a scholarship to a music college and was discovered by legendary composer Burt Bacherach, who fell in love with her unique voice. The singer went on to sign a recording contract in 1962 and her first single, ‘Don’t Make Me Over’ was a huge hit.

In 1968, Warwick won her first Grammy for ‘Do You Know the Way to San Jose’ making her the first African American female solo artist to ever win the accolade.

Since then Dionne has basked in the spotlight, releasing 40 albums and selling 100 million records worldwide. The burning question is: Is the Farewell Tour the last we’ll hear from the icon?

In a rare pre-tour interview the singer revealed: ‘After almost six decades I’ve decided it’s time to put away from touring and focus on recording, one off concerts and special events. I still love performing live, but the rigours of travelling every day so far from home, sleeping in different hotels each night, one concert after the other, is becoming hard. So, I’ve decided to stop touring on that level in Europe. But I’m not retiring!’

You can expect the concert to encompass Warwick’s monumental career, with songs including a selection of classic Warwick/Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs such as I Say A Little Prayer, Do You Know The Way To San Jose, Anyone Who Had A Heart and Walk On By. Dionne Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire era (1955-1999), based on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Charts. She is one of the most-charted female vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998, and 80 singles making all Billboard charts combined.

Rising Tide is a coffee shop in Brighton with an ethical twist.

They describe themselves as a social enterprise - a coffee shop with a conscientious heart. They believe in serving great coffee but with great morals, too. For example, their coffee suppliers are Skylark, a specialty coffee roastery and charity based in Brighton, who pay double the fair trade price for their coffee beans and donate money towards conservation efforts.

But let’s not forget about the goodies on offer to customers in their store - Rising Tide offers a range of delicious beverages: various hot and cold coffees, organic teas, hot chocolate, fair trade fizzy drinks and fruit juices. They also serve a variety of delicious vegan and veggie food options, too.

And it all seems to be going down rather well - Emily, coowner of Rising Tide, says: “We’ve got some regulars who we see daily, sometimes twice daily, and we’ve had some lovely reviews and feedback from people visiting Brighton for the day! It’s been great that

we’ve had the time to chat to the customers properly rather than just offering a transactional interaction. You never know how much someone may need a conversation!”

That ethos of community is in the design of the shop itself it’s a bright, welcoming space bursting with vibrant artwork.

This is a space curated to be warming to the soul. When they opened, Rising Tide asked local artists to showcase their work within the space. And that spirit of positivity goes back to the social enterprise element of Rising Tide.

Emily says that being a social enterprise defines how they operate as a business: “It means that we do business a bit differently and care about more than just the financial bottom line. We make all our decisions through the lens of their social, environmental and economic impact and want to have a positive impact rather than a neutral or negative one.”

proceeds from Rising Tide back to a community project in Guatemala, where some of their coffee is sourced. Emily says that sustainability is important too: “We have chosen our suppliers based on their ethics and sustainability practices. We believe that being transparent as a business is really important and we work hard to keep up a level of standard that we are proud of. We keep waste to a bare minimum and have sought out specialist recycling services to lower our carbon footprint and environmental impact.”

All of this loveliness has its base at their premises on East Street.

Emily says that Brighton is a fabulous place to live and work: “It’s wacky, welcoming and wonderful and it doesn’t try to be something it’s not!

When you visit, you get the Brighton Bug and fall in love with it. It’s such a unique city and I don’t think we’ve ever heard someone say they visited and didn’t enjoy themselves! There’s nowhere else like Brighton.”

Firstly, you are ‘worried’ your partner sees sex with you as a chore, but has she actually said this to you? The big thing here is communication! Have you asked her? Sit down with her and tell her what’s going on in your mind, and ask what’s going on in hers.

Relationships and sex can slip off the important to-do list as we can struggle to justify putting time aside for a date night. Remember the effort that you put into winning your dream partner when you first met? We make lots of effort to woo our other half but sometimes forget that we have to carry on putting the work in to keep them!

Book a babysitter, book a table at one of your favourite restaurants and create that special priceless time together, as this is not all about what happens in the bedroom. This is about the effort you both put in to make your partner feel special and loved. This is all still part of foreplay by the way! She was attracted to you before she slept with you so you need to remember that it’s you that she fell in love with. Children are one of the biggest passion killers of all time, even worse than the batteries running out in your favourite vibrator at that crucial moment! When these little people turn up it can be a real game-changer! One minute there’s just the two of you, then there’s three and in your case now four!

Tiredness is a big one, after all, who honestly wants to be physical at the end of a long exhausting day. We think the trick here is to make time for each other, literally put it in your calendar as an important event - because it is. Maybe don’t leave it until the end of the day when you are both tired, and we know that can be tricky when kids are around, but this could even be in the afternoon - now that could be really sexy!

Also please don’t put so much pressure on actual sex, no one likes to feel pressure when it comes to that. I’m sure your partner would love a hot bath run for her and a nice sensual massage in bed with no pressure of taking it further. It’s about growing back into the intimacy that has been lost between you because you both have a busy schedule and a young family but you will be amazed what a massage can do at the end of a busy day!

Award winning Terre à Terre was created in 1993, born from a shared passion of two people, Amanda Powley and Phillip Taylor, whose mission was to provide high-end vegetarian grub to the masses. Back then meat-free venues were a rarity, with most places offering unappetising vege options as an afterthought to their carnivorous menus.

Almost 30 years later and it’s safe to say their mission was accomplished. (Prove me wrong) I was invited along to review the food and cocktails on offer at this glorious place and decided my plus one would be someone who has never experienced a vegetarian restaurant before, and oh my, was she in for a treat.

The interior is bright and welcoming, with natural wood tables and huge patio windows at the rear that let in lots of light. I felt healthier just by walking inside.

I started with a cocktail, as all good evenings usually do. A Cherry Bakewell; organic spiced rum shaken with blood orange liqueur and sour cherry juice, garnished with vodka cherries and a light cinnamon dusting.

It tasted exactly like the name suggested - delicious.

Starters consisted of KFC, not chicken, Korean fried cauliflower.

The cauliflower is rolled in tamari black vinegar molasses and sesame Szechaun and is served with chestnut puree, ume plum sauce and kimchi. In layman’s terms what that means is the dish had a slight crunch, giving that fried chicken vibe, with an oriental kick. It was as amazing to the eye as it was to the palette. The chef is a master at presentation and flavour. No chicken was harmed (or missed) in the consumption of this starter.

Next up, a triumph of a main course; sneaky Peeking steamers.

pickled watermelon and miso chilli sauce. The buns arrived in their very own two-tiered bamboo casket. It’s very rare that I’m completely blown away by a dish, but this was one of those times. The intricate flavours and textures were a taste marriage made in heaven. Soft, marshmallowy buns with halloumi on another level in terms of taste.

Please note, this portion is enormous and would be an ideal sharer.

I cannot wax lyrical enough about this amazing restaurant, the staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. I don’t know where they found their chef, from some vegetarian wonderland no doubt, because their food is inspired and exciting.

P.s - my friend didn’t miss meat and said she’d definitely come back.

Native Hoveites know that George Street is the place to shop, grab coffee, food or a drink. From one end to the other, this community hub offers everything you’re looking for, from fruit and vegetables, to toothpaste and beauty products.

The latest addition to the street is JB’s Diner, situated at the beginning, or the end depending on your perspective. The venue sports a traditional retro American 1950s diner aesthetic, complete with shiny red booths, a black and white tiled chessboard floor and authentic artwork.

There’s even an Elvis style guitar on the wall. The place gave me immediate ‘Grease’ vibes, fit for an after school burger or milkshake. (Note to owner - please buy a jukebox.)

Burgers weren’t on my radar seeing that it was a Sunday and slightly too early for lunch, so I opted for the Breakfast and a fruit smoothie. Without

delay an enormous plate of food arrived featuring that all American classic, fluffy pancakes and crispy bacon with a side of maple syrup. I adore this salty sweet combination of flavours.

Also present were two fried eggs (sunny side up), two sausages, two hash browns, mushrooms and roasted cherry tomatoes. An English/American hybrid if you will. Everything was cooked to perfection and I’m not ashamed to say I polished off the lot.

The fresh fruit smoothie was served in a huge bowl glass, garnished with a strawberry and tasted amazing, a much needed health injection to balance out the hearty breakfast I inhaled.

Afterwards I sat outside in the sunshine watching the world go by and perused the menu for my next visit. The USA theme continues. Sharing platters loaded with panko crumbed chicken strips, ribs and beer battered onion rings with blue cheese

and BBQ dips. Three cheese nachos topped with guacamole and sour cream. The diner also has hot dogs, all topped with caramalised onions, fries and a side of slaw. JBs signature dog caught my eye the most; homemade chilli con carne, cheese, tomato and cilantro salsa and jalapenos. Yum. I’m also definitely having a milkshake on my next visit, they’re all made with ice cream and are served in traditional shake glasses. You can also bag yourself a bottomless soda for £3.45 (only with food).

The verdict? This is the perfect place to come and live your best Sandy and Danny life. Kids will absolutely love it too. The prices are reasonable, the menu is varied but not overbearing and the service was friendly and efficient. Also this is an independent business so it’s always nice to support the locals.

Features Editor, Samantha Harman sampled the cocktails at one of Brighton’s newest hotspots, the perfect start to any weekend.

The people behind The Salt Room and The Coal Shed have a new baby, Burnt Orange. The restaurant and cocktail bar opened its doors last year and no longer needs the association of its sister venues, word of mouth is extremely positive so when I was invited to sample the cocktails I was ecstatic.

Table booked, I arrived shortly before 10pm on a Saturday evening and the approach immediately gave me holiday vibes. You enter through an intimate cobbled courtyard filled with bistro tables, glowing fairy lights and gorgeous climbing green foliage. Lively music drifted out of the open door and the restaurant was packed with drinkers and diners. This is clearly a place to come and enjoy the start of your weekend in style, a low-key party buzz before venturing further afield.

Our waitress, Ruby, a magnificent host, arrived promptly with menus and recommendations. I opted for a Sparkling Sorbet featuring; Cazcabel Honey, Lemon Cordial, Grapefruit Bitters, Prosecco

and Passion Fruit Sorbet. The drink arrived in a long stemmed Coupe glass with its own spoon. A light lemon coloured liquid filled the interior with a generous ball of the aforementioned sorbet floating on top, which I stirred into the cocktail. The honey flavour was subtle and balanced well with the sharpness of citrus fruits and the melted sorbet added a delightful smooth dimension to the drink.

I could have stuck to this one for the whole night, but in the name of research, I selected another.

Next up, a Caledonian Sour; Caorunn Gin, Chambord, Lemon Juice, Ginger Syrup, and Peychaud’s Bitters. The drink arrived in the same glass as before and was presented beautifully. A thick head of foam lying on top of red liquid, with half of the top dusted in a mystery pink (but tasty) powder. It reminded me of a red velvet cake and the taste was divine. Slightly sour, with a deep fruity aftertaste.

I didn’t eat on this occasion, but will definitely return after wandering past diners eating the most appetising smelling food on the way to the loo.

This venue is perfect for parties and celebrations of any kind, but booking is advised.

These Teeth are the Bomb.

Bombshell Beauty & Aesthetics is a lovely little salon on St James Street in Kemp Town, Brighton. Run by the fabulous Ivy, Bombshell offers a range of cosmetic and health services to leave you feeling and looking your very best - fillers, contours, anti-wrinkle treatments, vitamin injections, fat dissolve treatments and botox are all on offer, as well as teeth whitening.

My teeth could definitely do with an improvement - so Discover went along to try.

Bombshell offers the Naturawhite teeth whitening treatment, which is billed as the safest and most effective whitening treatment in Europe. It doesn’t strip enamel from teeth which can be painful and potentially damaging. Instead, the whitening works via their specially patented BluForsa gel, in combination with a laser light. The gel removes stains from the teeth via a chemical process, specially activated by the heat and light from the laser. The light triggers molecules within the gel that attack the protein within teeth stains. All the ingredients have been properly tested and come from approved suppliers. And best of all - this process is pain-free and can leave teeth up to sixteen shades lighter!

I sat down in the salon chair and Ivy talked me through the process. First, I cleaned my teeth using a disposable toothbrush and specialist toothpaste, to clean my teeth as thoroughly as possible so that the good stuff could do its good work. Next, I was given a priming solution to rub over my teeth - this gets them ready to receive the whitening gel, for the best possible results.

Finally, Ivy applied the BluForsa gel into a mouthguard and helped it into my mouth. The laser light is mounted on an adjustable stand and Ivy swivelled it into position so that it sat against my mouth. Then all I had to do was sit back whilst the gel and laser light did their work! The treatment lasted for twenty minutes - I happily took the time to relax, enjoying the tunes on the radio and doing some mindless scrolling on my phone, of course.

You can repeat the process multiple times depending on the level of whiteness that you want to achieve. Ivy and I went for two rounds of treatment and the results were fantastic - my teeth were several shades whiter and it was all completely painless. All I had to do was sit back and relax.

If you’re familiar with 80s kids TV classic, Worzel Gummage (google it) then you’ll have an image in mind of a straw headed character in desperate need of some self care. And that ladies and gentleman is what I looked like the day I walked into Whip a short time ago.

They describe themselves as an ecocentric boutique hairdresser, barber and music lounge whose core values are sustainability and inclusivity.

They use forward thinking vegan, organic and cruelty free products by revolutionary brands Evo and Oway, needless to say I was looking forward to some much needed gentle hair care.

The salon is situated on Market Street and would definitely not look out of place in London’s trendy Brick Lane. In fact, Whip has a sister salon in East London and has transported its counterpart’s cool vibe to the seaside. The vision to open another branch on the south coast came after owner, Lulu, spent a boozy day out in Brighton and fell in love with the city.

My hairdresser Shona, who made me feel welcome and relaxed from the outset, is the salon’s senior stylist and newly appointed supervisor, with over 10-years experience. She regularly commutes between the London and Brighton salons and clearly loves her job.

I decided on a brown into blonde balayage, with a statement fringe and really good trim. The assignment was understood and I spent the next couple of hours chatting away while the products worked their magic.

Shona escorted me upstairs to the hair washing stations and I was pleasantly surprised by the art adorning the walls, various tasteful kinky, black and white photos by @sorryjonnydied were displayed and apparently the salon also uses the space as a gallery to showcase local talent.

The before picture of my hair is too horrific for public consumption, but I was incredibly pleased with the transformation. A warm brown blending into a perfect cool blonde, an amazing wavy blowdry and a fringe I could finally see out of again.

Give them a try next time you’re in need of a blow dry or new hair do, nothing is too tame for these guys who also love experimenting with colour.
