GRAFFITI OF THE MONTH
LEMONS LEMONS LEM LEONS LEM ONS LEMON
LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS...
Jenna Coleman and Aidan Turner are a couple whose relationship is traced through this political, sharp and humorous play with the ‘absurd’ premis of a world where the spoken and written word has become limited to a daily 140 words per person, per day.
The scene opens on an insightful set design from Robert Jones, a curved wall displays the minutiae of daily life. The stunning lighting design, by Aideen Malone, which identifies the word-depleted scenes with pure white fluorescent. Bernadette and Oliver’s existence develops from a warm, chance meeting at the bizarre location of a cat’s funeral into the bleak sterilised world of desperate word counting. Coleman’s lawyer Bernadette is an insecure, sometimes cold, pragmatist trying to come to understand boyfriend Turner’s activist, musician who has more respect for his political friends, his ex and their demonstrations than her profession. Before the government imposed the “hush law” the couple ‘waste’ their words somewhat whilst spinning around their feelings rather than expressing them. Post-bill they use words and communicate more succinctly. The chemistry between the two actors was sizzling whether in love or fury. Any media references to them being light weight TV ‘lovies’ should be swiftly dismissed. It was a compelling experience - you just can’t take your eyes off the stage and the rapidly changing 100 scenes. Josie Rourke’s production certainly excels in harnessing the complexity of the piece.
There are moments that catch your breath particularly as the moment that the bill is passed into law and the point where we discover why the play is so named. As the relationship breaks down the wall set symbolically disappears behind them leaving items dangling precariously in the darkness.
Sam Steiner’s script is sharp; pithy when needed and jumps between tight and expansive whether in the pre or post new law scenes.
In the end the couple use words in a more free form using singing, body language as communication between them. I like to think that they survive this and grow closer as, apart from anything else, new dating under the 140 word rule would be a nightmare. atgtickets.com/venues/theatre-royal-brighton

THE WOMEN FROM BRIGHTON
TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, WE’RE SHINING A LIGHT ON THESE AMAZING WOMEN FROM HISTORY WHO CALLED BRIGHTON THEIR HOME.
By Nancy Duckels
With both a pub and a bus named after her, Martha Gunn is one of the most well-known names on this list. Martha was a Brighton resident in the Regency period, when the city was newly booming as a seaside resort. She found fame as a ‘dipper’ - a female attendant who assisted sea-swimmers change into their swimming gear and get into the water. Martha was a favourite of none other than The Prince of Wales and even enjoyed access to the kitchen at his Brighton palace, The Royal Pavilion. So strong was her association with the city, that she appeared in various popular prints of the time and even on Toby Jugs!
Brighton has a rich history of progressive politics and Minnie Turner is a fine example - a member of the Suffragette movement, fighting for a woman’s right to vote. Minnie set up her Brighton home as a Suffragette-friendly space which was both a guest-house and activist hub. The house, marked by a blue plaque on Victoria Road, was one of the foremost meeting places in the South East for the Suffrage movement. Like many of her comrades, Minnie made sacrifices for the cause: she was arrested twice and had a spell in prison. Self-taught and with a reputation for a gentle, kindly nature, Minnie Turner was ahead of her time.
Entertainer and male impersonator Vesta Tilley was a shining light in the Edwardian music hall scene, thrilling audiences of the time with her genderbending performances. Vesta’s comic sketches and songs whilst dressed variously as a judge, policeman or just simply as a man challenged convention and won her masses of fans. She became the most highly-paid female entertainer on the British stage and trod the boards up and down the country. She spent the end of her life at her seafront flat in St Aubyn’s Mansions in Hove and is commemorated there with a blue plaque.
Dr Octavia Wilberforce was not expected to become one of Brighton’s first female GPs. Born into the upper classes, she was expected to fulfil her débutante destiny and marry into the nobility. However, Octavia had other ideas: she jilted her fiancé to study medicine and open a medical retreat in Henfield that took in injured Suffragettes. She went on to become head physician at a leading hospital for women and children, and open her own practice in Montpelier Crescent, where a blue plaque stands today in her honour.

COOLER THAN YOU THE DRUIDS HEAD
This delightful flint-fronted building has been standing since 1510, becoming a public house, The Druids Head, in 1830. It stands on the original town square back when Brighton was known as Brighthelm. Rumour has it the tunnels underneath the pub were used for smuggling by pirates back in the day, these tunnels have since been sealed subsequent to some historical human remains being excavated in the 1960s. It is one of the most haunted pubs in the city and the Druids team can testify to this, there have been many unexplained noises and paranormal activity heard and seen by everyone who has ever worked there. A former manager who lived on site said he had a prolific dream about a woman (ghost) standing at the end of the bar downstairs which absolutely terrified him. Lights have been seen turning on and off on their own accord and ghostly shapes have also been captured by the pub’s CCTV cameras. Voices have been heard coming from the now empty flat upstairs and another team member heard a whisper in her ear in the cellar. The pub is part of the ‘Ghost Walk of the Lanes’ which take place from Wednesday to Sunday, meet outside the Druids Head at 7.30pm and be taken on a ghostly tour of the whole area. Step in now for some amazing pub grub served daily from 11am and live music every Wednesday from 8pm. greene-kingpubs.co.uk
A brand new monthly feature celebrating the people, diversity and fashion in our city. This month it’s the gorgeous Beau Blackshaw, a budding fashion designer and bar manager, who wears her own Brighton Pavilion inspired design and we are here for it!
Who are your fashion influences? Vivienne Westwood , Sade Sanchez from LA Witch, Amy Taylor from Amyl and The Sniffers?
Where do you shop? If I’m honest I’m a charity shopaholic but my favourite place for clothes in Brighton is probably the upstairs of Snoopers Paradise. I also love the Wardrobe Clothes Agency in Hastings they sell all vintage designer clothing.

TISBURY’S AT STANMER HOUSE
By Samantha Harman
stanmerhouse.uk
IG: @stanmerhouseuk
FB: @StanmerHouseSussex
Stanmer Park happens to be one of my favourite places in Brighton, I am addicted to its endless rolling fields, secluded woodland, and clusters of candy floss-esque cherry blossom trees in spring. It is the perfect place for dog walking and lolling on the grass contemplating life. So when I discovered (see what I did there) that Chef, Russell Tisbury was at the helm in Stanmer House kitchen, knocking out his legendary Sunday Roasts I was chomping at the bit to visit for food related reasons. Arriving on Sunday evening with my perpetually starving teenage son, we entered the 18th century manor house that exudes glamorous reverence with its humongous ceilings, exquisite crystal chandeliers and oversized, original portraits that stared down at us from crimson walls. The open fires were lit, and the smoky scent of popping logs mingled with the delicious aroma of roast dinner.
We were seated and ordered without delay. Me, the slow roasted belly of pork and he, sirloin of beef. When I tell you the Yorkshire Pudding was so big you could wear it as a hat, I am not joking. The roasts also come with; garlic and herb roast potatoes, glazed beetroot and carrots, root vegetable mash, cauliflower cheese and buttered greens. The portions are generous as is the gravy offering. My pork belly came topped with perfect crispy crackling and my son’s beef was pink in the middle and melt in the mouth.
I have eaten Russell’s roasts before and can honestly tell you he has levelled up, not that he needed to. To finish we shared a sticky toffee pudding and ice cream as we were both full to bursting. This is my go-to dessert in winter. It was a delicately spiced, sweet, sticky bowl of heaven and the perfect end to an amazing meal. The roasts are just the start for Tisbury who will be launching some new food options, make sure you book a table as soon as humanly possible - Discover magazine will definitely be back, this is one of the best roasts in the city and the gorgeous surroundings make it worth the visit.

RUN LIKE THE WOLF
DISCOVER CHATTED TO PROPRIETOR, GEMMA DAVIES ABOUT HER LIFE CHANGING WELLNESS BUSINESS THAT IS MAINLY, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY FOR WOMEN.
By Samantha Harman
After a decade in London and six years working in New York, Gemma said goodbye to TV and Film producing and moved back to Sussex to start a family and launch her Wellness Business, Run Like The Wolf in Brighton. “I was inspired to start Run Like The Wolf after living in Williamsburg, which has a vibrant wellness community; the scene had so much colour and energy—everyone was so welcoming with an incredibly diverse set of skills. No linen trousers, hushed voices or spenny yoga mats—just people connecting and sharing their journeys—teaching, healing and really being authentic in their skin, which I hadn’t really experienced before. Going to a Drum Circle, a Tarot Taster, a Creative Painting Workshop or a Breathwork Session after work was a fun alternative to the (amazing) NYC bar scene. Wellness for me became socialising plus self-care, and with the bonus of no hangover the next day! I remember having a real life-changing moment at my first Sound Bath – laying on the floor with 20 complete strangers while three gurus played instruments above our heads: rain-making maracas, tuning forks and flapping eagle wings immersed us in a cacophony of sound and sensation.” Run Like The Wolf celebrates its first birthday this April 2023 and has had a successful first year hosting (mainly women’s) wellness events. They’ve sold out all their Creative Wellbeing sessions, Day Retreats and Workshops and explored and challenged themes like Purpose, The Meaning of Self-Care, Identity and Expression. Gemma is still a producer at heart and loves curating the events, bringing together Brighton’s best Teachers, Practitioners, Healers, Guides and Coaches to create a fun and welcoming space. “My idea was really just to bring a dollop of fun and spark to the Wellness world; to create a space for women to connect and to heal together. There is always a real mix of laughter AND tears at our events as we open ourselves up to experiencing different things in a group.” Run Like The Wolf’s events so far have hosted a mix of established Wellness and Mindfulness practices like Yoga, Sound Immersion, Meditation plus some more non- traditional disciplines like Stripped-Back Boxing, Self Discovery, Howling + Chanting, Inner Child Art Classes and Self Massage. The next event will be in March at Projects, The Lanes, Nile Street. A Collaboration with The Paint Club. More details coming soon.

SALT SPACE
BREATHE EASY…WITH 100% NATURAL SALT THERAPY COMPLETELY NATURAL, ORGANIC AND DRUG FREE, EVERYONE CAN BENEFIT FROM THE HEALING PROPERTIES OF SALT.
Salt therapy provides relief for a variety of respiratory and skin conditions, from COPD, asthma and eczema to bronchiectasis, bronchiolitis and sinusitis. It can help boost the immune system and can increase lung capacity. It works for both adults and children from the age of six months.
“My breathing has improved enormously. I can walk faster and going up steps is much easier. I’m not wheezing at night any more and I rarely use my inhalers during the day,” says Sue who has COPD and is a regular at Salt Space in Brighton & Hove.
The great thing about dry salt therapy is that customers simply need to sit in the treatment rooms and relax. Some take the opportunity to have a nap. The bright and cheerful children’s space has toys and a television so children can be entertained as they breathe in the health boosting salt air.
“The initial sessions relieved my daughter’s cough and bronchial symptoms enormously, particularly after the third session’” says one mum. “As a baby, she used to wake up at night coughing until she vomited. I felt that salt therapy nipped things in the bud really quickly, and her rattling cough, which sounded exactly like the cough that had previously ended up with her on antibiotics, didn’t set in anywhere near as badly as previous bouts.”
Hundreds of adults and children have enjoyed the health benefits of Salt Space since it opened seven years ago, as more and more people realise that help is at hand for their respiratory problems. The natural properties of salt mean that the rooms are highly sterile during sessions as the salt-infused air is introduced and inhaled deep into the lungs.
Visit Salt Space and breathe easy. To book your first FREE session, or for more information, please call Salt Space on 01273 973843.

THE TREATMENT ROOMS
The Treatment Rooms is a welcoming, calming space. I sat on a comfy sofa waiting to meet with my therapist, sipping a soothing herbal tea whilst waiting to experience the CACI Non-Surgical Face Lift Facial treatment. These have been growing in popularity as an alternative to fillers and other intrusive options.
My therapist Klara led me into a treatment room, then checked my medical history and allergies. She talked me through the treatment itself: a procedure lasting 1 hour and 10 minutes using the Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument. Originally designed for Bells Palsy and Stroke sufferers, it uses a microcurrent via metal probes with collagen-filled buds. The electrical current passes into the muscle stimulating it similar to a gym workout for the skin (Botox fans - please note that you can’t have this treatment within a month of having your injection.) She asked me if there were any areas in which I had particular concerns before leaving me to undress and get comfortable. It had been a ghastly day so the opportunity to let the cares drift away whilst lying on soft cotton sheets underneath a cosy duvet and blanket on the treatment bed was very welcome!
She began with a full cleanse and tone of my face and neck which felt wonderful. Firm pressure is needed to access the face muscles but it’s not painful. Next, Klara popped enhanced tissue repair pads on my forehead during the facial to repair any fine lines and areas of pigmentation. I felt totally relaxed throughout the treatment, which ended with an intense cooling and moisturising face mask. Afterwards my skin was glowing, areas of high pigmentation were reduced and my face felt more taut and firm. I could see that with a full course of 10 treatments over 5 weeks there could be an enduring benefit. As I floated out of the salon into the early evening air, I felt a million dollars.

At Khalil Properties, we have the experience and the expertise to help you get the most out of your property. One way that we can do this is by working with you on short-term lettings: renting out your property on a short-term basis. Demands for hotel alternatives have increased in recent years and this is a prime market that we can help you explore. The benefits of short-term letting include:
Flexible pricing: As the lets are agreed for a shorter period, you can adjust your prices more regularly to keep up with changing demand and competition. You’re not tied into a fixed price over a long period, as with a long-term let.
Higher income generation: As prices can be raised during peak times and adjusted to keep bookings flowing throughout the year, you’ll be able to maximise your potential income. You can strategize your bookings to get the maximum return on your investment.
Flexibility with tenants: Obviously, hopefully all tenants are wonderful. But just in case they’re not, you’re not tied into a long-term contract. You can find better tenants quickly. Regular involvement with your property: The faster turnover of tenants means that you can access your property more regularly if you want to. It’s easy to have access for maintenance or to check the property.
