Discover History
This month in Discover History, we focus on The Pepperpot, a prominent structure with an eclectic and interesting past (bold stand first) On Tower road, a stone’s throw from Queens Park, stands an ornate, grade II listed tower, affectionately known by locals as ‘The Pepperpot’. The structure was designed and built in 1830 by Charlie Barry, to house the villa’s pump and water tank and supplied water by force from the pressure contained in the large tank located in the top of the tower. It has had various uses ever since; most notably for printing and publishing the Brighton Daily Mail; as an observation tower in the Second World War; a scout headquarters; an artist’s studio, and finally as a public convenience. Today it is not used at all, but is an admired and beloved piece of Brighton history and a reminder of the magnificent architecture and design of the Victorian era. A local photographer was allowed Inside the structure in April 2003, he reported It to be in a sad state of repair, damp, smelly with a layer of slime on everything. The ten-sided cylindrical structure is now a strong landmark and prominent meeting point for many people living in the Hanover area.

By Kairen Kemp
Billy Lockett brims with warmth, self-depreciation, positivity and a joy of life as I talk with him from his studio. He’s a remarkable talent who has overcome what would have floored many. Lockett is “a piano man” who writes songs that immediately engage his audience as they come from his heart which he faultlessly translates to recorded and live performance. Born and growing up in Nottingham, with his “not normal parent … crazy hippy dad” and two cats in the street that features in the title of his stunning new album ‘Abington Grove’ which showcases artwork by Cameron West. His father would “move the earth” to make anything music related happen. Often he says, in detriment to his school studies but “I’m terrible at everything except music”. In a few years his star was rising, being playlisted on Radio 1 and landing tours supporting Birdy, Lana del Rey and KT Tunstall. The death of Billy’s dad, following years of fighting cancer, sent him in to a downward spiral where he “went off the rails a bit - got a cat” and spent two years in the basement of the family house writing songs for his EP ‘Reset’. The song ‘Empty House’ while is seemingly a song of loss and heartbreak also relishes the
“calming” quiet and peace which had previously been absent there. He emerged sporting an afro grown “accidentally” and in his own words, probably not his greatest style decision. Moving to London where he spent another two years writing, sold out a headline show, got a record deal and, thankfully, ditched the afro. Sadly he hit the buffers once again but this time got help. He was touring with Lewis Capaldi and ELO followed by promoting his own headline tour which sold out. Before he could release his album he lost his record contract and got dumped by his girlfriend. Along with his broken heart and cat he returned to the Northampton house basement studio. He then acquired new management, wrote and self-released modern classical piano-only album which charted. Meeting James Cordon through a mutual friend led to LA and appearing on The Late Show and his star started to soar again. The boy who started playing piano at seven years old is enjoying his career and life with his constant companion Trev the bulldog “a dream and the light of my life”. He’s made an album he loves and is looking forward to the future, “making music for ever”...

Sustainability Festival Sunday May 21st
By Samantha Harman
Discover is excited to announce a brand new collaboration with One Garden Brighton, situated in Stanmer Park. This month we introduce the garden and kitchen and highlight the Sustainability Festival happening in May. It’s the perfect day out for those interested in horticulture and freshly grown produce, with a view to greener thinking.
One Garden’s tagline reads, ‘ A walled garden, rooted in the past and focused on the future’, with the whole business consisting of; One Garden, One Kitchen, One Market and One Events. There are also a number of plant related courses you can take from March through until July. The walled garden itself has been in existence since 1713, when architect Nicolas Dubois was commissioned to design Stanmer House and its gardens. Historically, walled gardens were used to protect exotic and unusual plants from poor weather and provided vegetables and fruit to the main house. The gardens of today have been designed by The Eden Project’s Dominic Cole and celebrate both heritage and innovation, producing traditional fruit and vegetable crops as well as a series of contemporary show gardens. Visitors can enjoy Canada, All Seasons, Contemplation, Urban, Pollinator, Rain, Hot and Dry and Medicinal Gardens, where you will learn much about horticulture and the many
benefits of plants. On Sunday, May 21st, exhibitors and speakers are required for the Sustainability Festival which aims to bring people together to spark meaningful conversations about our planet. Expect to find a curated selection of stalls, talks, workshops, children’s activities as well as locally sourced food and drink, while exploring practical ways of contributing to a greener future. Why not visit One Kitchen while you are there? At the heart of the garden, you will discover the restaurant and meeting place, serving high quality, seasonal dishes inspired by the garden that sources produce from the Kitchen Garden plot, Plumpton Estate and other local produce found within One Garden. This relaxed and family-friendly space boasts indoor and outdoor seating with a flexible menu for all appetites. A brand-new menu launches soon, that will include a Sunday Roast offering. There’s also a beginner’s floristry (5/04) or a grow in the garden course (12/04) starting this month. The floristry course spans 10-weeks in the evenings and will teach you to plan, design and create your very own floral arrangements. The garden course (City and Guilds Level 1) explores the theory that regular contact with plants and nature can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress and boost mood and increase energy levels. Vegfest returns to Brighton
Research shows that cutting down on meat at last one day a week can significantly reduce cholesterol, which lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
You can also expect to decrease the chances of developing certain cancers, kidney disease, liver disease and lung disease. Following a plant-based diet isn’t the same as it used to be, vegetarian and vegan cuisine has come a long way since the days of lentils and mung beans and we are fortunate enough to live in a city that caters for the many non-meat eaters who reside here. Also broadly speaking, plant-based proteins generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions and use less water and less land when compared with animal-based protein production. So the benefits are not only bodily, but also environmental. With this in mind, why not step out and enjoy a meal cooked for you by one of our recommended restaurants?
Award winning Terre à Terre was created in 1993, born from a shared passion of two people, Amanda Powley and Phillip Taylor, whose mission was to provide high-end vegetarian grub to the masses. Back then meat-free
venues were a rarity, with most places offering unappetising vege options as an afterthought to their carnivorous menus. Almost 30 years later and it’s safe to say their mission was accomplished. Terre has stood the test of time and paved the way for other like minded establishments, but let’s never forget they are the original and possibly one of the best. The vodka injected baby tomato is a firm favourite of Discover, as are the hand shaken cocktails. This is the perfect romantic dinner venue, or a mate date. Terreaterre.co.uk.
Food For Friends is another of Brighton’s original award-winning vegetarian and vegan restaurants, featured in ‘The Sunday Times’ Top Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurants and in ‘The Good Food Guide 2018’. Their ethos is tasty and honest, and they cook using fresh and consciously sourced produce. The relaxed and attentive atmosphere will ensure you will be welcomed as a guest, and they want you to leave as a friend. The establishment does have a relaxed high-end cafe vibe and is always busy. Make sure you book to avoid disappointment. Foodforfriends.com.

Not to be truffled with
A review of Signorini Tartufi
Samantha Harman was invited to Signorini Tartufi the only truffle shop in the UK, located in the South Laines to find out all about truffles, a culinary delicacy. There’s something incredibly romantic about the thought of specially trained pigs digging in the woods to locate the elusive golden egg of the culinary world. But what are they exactly? Truffles are one of the most expensive foods you can buy due to their scarcity, the fact they are seasonal and extremely difficult to grow and cultivate. The rock-like lumps are edible spores that grow on an underground fungus in the family tuberaceae. Not to be confused with mushrooms, as they are technically not the same species. Mushrooms grow above ground, while Truffles grow below. An upside down mushroom if you will. I was invited along to find out more from shop manager, Joanna at Signorini Tartufi a relatively new truffle specialist shop in the South Lanes. The gold and black fronted shop sits in a prime position, opposite Riddle and Finns and is the Chocolate Factory of the truffle world. There is everything here from truffle crisps, to pasta and the feel is the same as a high-end jewelry shop. This is unsurprising as certain truffles are ounce
By Samantha Harman
for ounce more expensive than gold. Joanna explained that some truffles are worth tens of thousands of pounds, like diamonds. The shop has been open for almost six months, and all the products are sourced from France, with 55 shops in Europe, the Brighton branch is the only UK store to date. The shop sells four seasons of truffle; black truffle, summer truffle, spring truffle and the most expensive of the four, white truffle. The white truffle only grows in Italy, with each having its own unique taste, smell and texture. The black truffle is more woody and earthy, while the white truffle has a more natural garlic flavour. My dream of a specially trained pig crew was quickly shattered as Joanna explained they use dogs to harvest the truffles as the pigs are much harder to train and less obedient, they want to eat the truffles themselves. I left with a jar of truffle honey, which apparently goes well with cheese. Everything about this shop is upmarket, the ladies who work here are incredibly knowledgable about their products and you’re guaranteed to leave with a smile and a boujee gift bag.

It’s Getting Hot In HereThe Benefits of
Sauna
By Samantha Harman
Did you know the sauna was invented 2000 years ago? The ingenious Finns used them as a form of bath, and considered saunas a sterile environment with many Finnish women using them to give birth. Fast forward to today and the heated, traditionally wooden spaces are found at every corner of the globe. But what makes them so appealing?
According to the Harvard Medical Journal, regular saunas can benefit your heart health and can even plump up wrinkles giving a younger appearance. If these facts alone aren’t enough to persuade you, read on to find out more…
Unsurprisingly, saunas can help relieve stress. They are warm, quiet spaces to escape the outside world away from its many distractions. The heat relaxes the body’s muscles, improves circulation and stimulates the release of endorphins, the natural ‘feel good’ chemical. Muscle aches and joint pain relax due to the aforementioned endorphin release which has a mild tranquilising effect and the ability to minimise the pain of arthritis and other muscle soreness. The high temperature also causes blood vessels to dilate, which in turn increases blood flow and speeds up the body’s natural healing process for cuts and bruises. Flushing toxins is another medically recognised health benefit. This occurs when heat from the blood begins to move towards the skin’s surface, causing the body’s nervous system to send signals to the millions of sweat glands. Deep sweating that occurs in a sauna can help reduce levels of lead, copper, zinc, nickel, mercury and chemicals - which are all commonly absorbed toxins from our daily environment. (Yikes.) Heat bathing is one of the oldest beauty and health strategies for cleansing the skin. When the body goes into deep sweating mode, our skin is cleansed, and dead cells are replaced which keeps it in tip top condition. Bathing your skin in sweat on a regular basis can also deter collagen breakdown that results in wrinkles and sagging. Research has also shown that regular sauna use can also induce a deeper, more relaxed sleep. It is thought that the endorphins released in conjunction with the rise and fall of body temperature are key in facilitating a good night’s rest. Excuse us while we grab a towel and run off to the nearest sauna facility…

Breath workshop and Kimono Lounge
Tracy Jane SullivanA true renaissance woman
By Kairen Kemp
Listen now:
Tracy Jane Sullivan is an inspiration and you only have to step over her threshold to feel an immediate hit of relaxation and calm. Following vocal rehabilitation for her singing voice she discovered the importance of breathwork; not just for the voice but for complete wellbeing in body, mind and spirit. As she points out, everyone breathes, you can take it anywhere, it doesn’t need a fancy charger and Apple don’t own it!
After many years of research and learning from leading experts in the industry, she now holds both group and 1-1 classes as a breathwork practitioner. Personally she found that her own anxiety and depression faded away when she practised breathing techniques. In an attempt to replace her damaged sing- ing voice she learnt to play the harp and often includes the calming, therapeutic music in her sessions Following the death of her father she began to rethink the way she lived her life. She decided to live with joy; to follow her heart, try new things and to live in the moment. This kind of organic creativity is reflected in her mainly improvised music with her band ’Some Kind Of Astronaut’ whose EP ‘Expansions’ has recently been released on Spotify. TJ, as she likes to be called, has always had a deep interest in Japan culture, which grew from her martial arts practice. She’d bought kimono before but after her father died she purchased more and these remarkable wearable works of art changed her life. She discovered that wearing a kimono was a therapy it its own right, it dissolved her grief and she grew ever more curious about their history and how they were and can be worn. The joy they brought her was incredible and her collection of vintage and antique pieces grew into the hundreds. TJ now shares her kimono therapy with others in her Kimono Lounge events where people are invited to enjoy kimono, ‘play dress up’ whilst learning more about they can be worn traditionally or in a more westernised way. She occasionally will sell some of her collection to others if she feels it’s right. Lounge members often feedback that they feel changed and empowered by wearing the kimono. They wear kimono often, taking more opportunities for self-care mindfulness; what TJ would call #Kimonoo’clock So, it’s only natural that in 2023 TJ will be hosting events where creative breathwork meets the healing sounds of the harp and guests will be offered the exquisite opportunity to wrap themselves in vintage Japanese silk, experiencing the true power of #kimonooclock for themselves!. Want to rent out your property on a short-term
Flexible pricing
As the lets are agreed for a shorter period, you can adjust your prices more regularly to keep up with the changing demand and competition. You’re not tied into a fixed price over a long period, as with a long-term let.
Flexibility with tenants
Obviously, hopefully, all tenants are wonderful. But just in case they’re not, you’re not tied into a long-term contract. You can find better tenants quickly.
Regular involvement
The faster turnover of tenants means you can access your property more regularly if you want to. It’s easy to have access for maintenance or to check the property

VoulezVous Coucher Avec Moi, Ce Soir?
Brand new room launch at Hotel Pelirocco
By Samantha Harman
The iconic Hotel Pelirocco has launched yet another new, themed room and I am happy to report it is everything you’d want for a romantic and (very) sexy night’s stay. Upon arrival, I was greeted in the hotel’s Tiki bar by Alice who was dressed head to toe in a Moulin Rouge Circus style top hat and tails, a huge hint of things to come. The Peli really know how to throw a party and the colourful lounge area was already buzzing with guests including a DJ and I was presented with a welcome cocktail from Devil’s Dyke Gin. The drink went down far too easily, consisting of Apricot Brandy, the aforementioned Gin, lemon juice with cranberry and Grenadine topped off with a Maraschino cherry. Resisting the urge to order another, as the tour was about to begin and I know from personal experience the dizzy heights of those stairs. (There is a lift available for guests) We followed Alice to the second floor, where she flung open the door to reveal Salon Rouge. It is what I imagine Christina Aguilira’s dressing room might have looked like on the set of the Moulin Rouge music video. Everything is gold and deep red, velvet, chiffon or feathers with the four poster bed taking centre stage as you walk in. Scan the room and you quickly see the second jaw dropping feature, a red, freestanding roll top bath, complete with a shelf to rest ice cold Champagne upon (one can dream). I couldn’t resist having a bounce on the bed which is ridiculously comfortable and flanked by a rail of luxurious robes, masks and feather boas to ensure your stay is as fun as possible. There is also a double shower in an adjacent room, perfect for washing away the previous night’s shenanigans and fyi, the loo seat is gold glitter, so you can even pee in style. The room is gregarious and over-the-top theatrical glamour at its very best, I couldn’t imagine anything other than having the most sublime night in this room. As always, Pelirocco is offering cheaper rates and free breakfast when you book directly, what are you waiting for? Go get your sass on. Hotelpelirocco.co.uk.
Our Co-Editor, Samantha Harman was invited along to check out the new themed room, ‘Salon Rouge’ at Hotel Pelirocco, Brighton’s original Rock N Roll boutique hotel.
