Ola Volo

Brighton is a canvas for the many graffiti and street artists who reside here and now Ola Volo, an international artist, best known as a public muralist has added her first UK piece on Trafalgar Street.

Originally from Kazakhstan with a Russian father and Polish mother, Ola’s art is a reflection of many different cultures. She revealed ‘Kazakhstan is a very diverse and dynamic place with Middle Eastern and Asian influencesthat as a melting pot has really affected my work because it’s become a reflection of those cultures. But moving to Canada and having my family here now is another influence which is the western world, the west coast specifically. Living in Vancouver has influenced my work when it comes to nature and animals and organic connections between people and cities. My art is a reflection of my past and present.’

The artist lists the Brighton mural as one of her favourites saying ‘It’s super bright, sassy and cool and fits the city so well. This project came up pretty quickly and we were brainstorming to collaborate with Enter Gallery and they commissioned me to paint this piece in Brighton in an

iconic corner in the street. The characters I paint are female and they are a little bit bossy and take up space, they feel timeless. I feel like the piece in Brighton really celebrated all of those aspects. It’s punchy, it’s red, black and white. It’s a joker, she’s risky and sassy but there’s also an essence of calmness in her. All those aspects made the project feel relatable to so many people in Brighton and I felt that when I was painting it. Passersby interacted with me and I had time to chat to them about my work, it opened my eyes to the fact people really love public art.’ The artist admitted to being intimidated when she first started painting at street level ‘I saw so many graffiti artists and I compared my work to theirs. They are so talented using shading and line work I’ve never seen before. But by putting up different styles opens up the public perception of what street art is. So that will only ignite more curiosity in people if they are exposed to so many different styles. Contributing to spreading art around the world I feel is so necessary right now. This is an amazing way to expand our knowledge of art and expand our perspective and more than anything, I hope it ignites the next generation.’

You can visit the mural outside Blend and Brew on Trafalgar street and recyclable coffee cups and coffee tins will be available to purchase, so you can take the mural home with you. Enter Gallery on Bond Street, who commissioned this fabulous work will also be selling prints. Olavolo.com / IG: @olavolo.

We meet a Jewish man with an orthodox background who is completely trapped in the closet and unable to express his sexuality. He falls asleep and during a prolific dream, two angels come to his rescue and begin dressing him up and grant him the opportunity to express himself through singing, dancing and costume changes and encourage him to finally embrace his sexuality as a gay Jew and express who he really is. The main character visits different musical eras and entertains the crowd with perfect choreography and dazzling costume changes. The show culminates with him waking up and being unafraid to express his dream self in the waking world. The show has a very strong message of being free to be who you really are and offers support to all of our lgbtq+ community across the world, especially during this current climate of hate and division. This is a 60-minute show and the songs are performed in many languages; Hebrew, Yiddish, Spanish and English with high quality choreography and lots of interaction with the audience.

Different Folks With Shirley Collins

Shirley Collins and the Lodestar Band, Rattle on the Stovepipe and Brighton Morris. Shirley Collins is a true folk legend revered by peers and audiences alike. One of the most important voices in British Folk, singer and song collector Shirley Collins MBE was born in Hastings in 1935 to an artistic, socialist folk singing family. Shirley was fascinated by folk songs growing up, singing alongside her sister Dolly. She met Alan Lomax with who she joined for a field trip across the USA, where they recorded/collected folk songs and blues that had never been heard before. They travelled to the most remote areas to meet remarkable, undiscovered performers, with considerable adventures along the way recounted in her book ‘America Over The Water’. Shirley cemented her role at the forefront of the Folk Revival, recording over a dozen albums including the influential ‘Folk Roots, New Routes’. After tragically losing her singing voice in the 1980s, Shirley was finally encouraged to return to live performance in 2014. Since then, she has produced two acclaimed albums, ‘Lodestar’ and ‘Heart’s Ease’.

Gravity & Other Myths Out Of Chaos

The circus company Gravity & Other Myths, formed in 2009 and utilise an honest approach to performance to create work with a focus on human connection and acrobatic virtuosity. Hailing from Adelaide Australia they return to Brighton Festival with a mesmerising story of how things come together; people, planets, and plans. Audience, performer, sound, and light move with agility between chaotic creation stories and our seemingly ordered understanding of the here and now, all the while hinting at the strange space between knowing and contemplating our mortal significance. The performance attempts to express the thoughts that shape us and in turn define how we make sense of our inner and outer worlds. Hard-edged, throbbing, explosive acrobatics that reference birth, death and primordial physics collide with intimate verbal confessions and insights into what it feels like to be on stage in real time ... complete with sweaty armpits. By exposing the inner workings of the world-class acrobat they unveil the magic that is Gravity and Other Myths most precious commodity; the genuine human connection between each other and our audience.

Three Score Dance Company presents three poignant new works by Russell Maliphant Dance Company, Rhiannon Faith and Artistic Director Jason Keenan-Smith in an exhilarating and poignant exploration of older, bolder dance, as soundscapes, voice and light shape the space and our understanding of memory and time. Russell Maliphant Dance Company is delighted to be working with Three Score Dance Company, based in Brighton and Hove, on this new performance piece inspired by RMDC’s current touring production Vortex.

The new piece, Rose Until It Touched The Sky, title comes from the poem ‘As I Grow Older’ by Langston Hughes, the Harlem Renaissance activist and writer . It was made on ten dancers aged over 55 from the Three Score Dance Company over ten sessions, taking place between January and March 2023.

Sessions were led and the performance piece devised with the dancers by RMDC dancers Charlie Brittain and Edd Arnold; with music by Atmo Music Productions and lighting design by Ryan Joseph Stafford.

Rose Until It Touched The Sky Galatea

Set in a world where gods walk among the mortals, this unapologetically queer story follows different characters - all lost in the woods. Two young trans people find love whilst escaping oppression; a shipwrecked migrant searches for his family; goddesses clash; parents fret; an alchemist brews magic and a teenage Cupid sets hearts on fire - causing chaos and near disaster. And all the while, time is running out! Galatea was written in the 1580s by John Lyly, William Shakespeare’s best-selling but now long-forgotten contemporary, inspiring Shakespeare’s comedies from As You Like It to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performed in front of Queen Elizabeth I over four hundred years ago, this tale of love, joy and the importance of welcoming outsiders is an incredibly resonant story for modern times. Commissioned by Brighton Festival for its World Premiere, this ambitious outdoor production is a major collaboration between award-winning queer theatre maker, Emma Frankland, who adapted this with Subira Joy; LGBTQIA+ culture catalysts, Marlborough Productions; acclaimed Cornish landscape theatre company, Wildworks; and leading theatre historian and editor, Andy Kesson.

Cooler Than You Daddy Long Legs

A weird and wonderful railway Construction for this strange railway started in 1894 and was opened in November 1896. Passengers were carried in a large tramcar-like carriage on a deck mounted on long stilts in the sea. It was named ‘Pioneer’ but popularly known as ‘Daddy long-legs’ due to its height and stilt like legs. Equipped with a lifeboat and lifebelts, the railway had to be operated by a qualified sea captain. Power was provided by an electricity cable mounted on tall poles along the shoreline, connected by trolley poles to motors in the bogies at the foot of the stilts.

Tragically, a few days after it opened, the railway was put out of action by a severe storm. It reopened in July 1897 and ran without major incident until damage to the trackbed meant it couldn’t operate during the summer of 1900, causing a serious loss of business to Magnus Volk. In 1901, Brighton Corporation exercised its right to remove some of the track to enable sea defenses to be built, and the project came to an end.

There is now a pub named after the imaginative contraption situated near to Brighton Marina (daddylonglegs.co.uk).

Embers - Flame to Please

Discover Editors were invited to the soft launch of Embers, a new restaurant featuring woodfired small plates with signature cocktails

Picture the scene, it’s April 1st and my Co-editor and I are aimlessly wandering the South Laines looking for the elusive new venue Embers, wondering if the whole thing was an April fool’s joke. One quick call to their PR manager remedied this theory and moments later we strolled up to (literally) the hottest new eaterie in the city.

Wood fired cooking is the order of the day and this was evident as soon as we walked inside. An open kitchen proudly displays the oven in question and a slick line of chefs creating flame cooked mastery in clear view of the diners.

The menu comprises of small plates and centre piece dishes with a surprising variety of plant based and fish offerings interspersed with meaty delights.

Embers recommend you have seven small plates with one centrepiece dish between two. We opted for glazed lamb ribs, with Kimchi carrot and Furikake (a crunchy, salty Japanese seasoning) creamy ‘bonfire’ mashed potato with black garlic and onion seed crumble, charred broccoli, heritage tomato salad and our chosen centerpiece was hake with Vadouvan mussels. The ribs were

heaven - tender meat that fell off the bone and even better, I ate them all to myself, the pleasures of dining with a pescatarian. Also, I’ve never tasted mussels like the above mentioned, a complex taste of sweetness with a touch of smokiness. Delicious.

One of the highlights, was the signature cocktail which arrived in a coupe glass, the rim of which was encased in a bubble that burst to reveal a puff of smoke with a woody aroma. Cocktail alchemy. It is worth mentioning the venue employs an award winning mixologist who is passionate about creating his own drinks and this one was well balanced and complex - I applaud you.

To end the experience we shared a Banana Split to remember, with parsnip and rosemary ice cream, toffee sauce and praline, and yes, we just about had room to squeeze it in. The vibe is cool Shoreditch, the interior, urban chic with heavy masculine touches - an understated juxtaposition of the industrial and the outdoors. I forgot I was in Brighton, and not only savoured the food but also the unfamiliarity. Embersbrighton.co.uk.

Cocktails in the City

The first recorded cocktail was made in 1806, by a New York bartender who created a drink made of spirit, sugar, water and bitters for an editor who proclaimed the beverage to be ‘stimulating liquor’ in his column. We too are fans of stimulating liquor and have been beavering away to bring the best tried and tested cocktail bars in the city. For the past few months our editor has slipped in and out of establishments unannounced all for research purposes. Read on to discover our findings…

First up, the new kid in town - Brighton Cocktail Co, an exciting new space in Seven Dials, Brighton. Designed as a community-oriented space and a destination for cocktail enthusiasts for you to connect and enjoy the very best concoctions. For one, the manager is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to mixing and shaking. And two, Happy Hour is everyday between 4-7pm and the Parma Violet Delight is all kinds of naughty. Definitely going back as soon as possible.

Next it’s Twisted Lemon, formally known as Blind Lemon Alley, as the name used to suggest the venue is located at the end of a tiny alleyway. The day of our visit was packed,

but we were happy to take an outside table and wait. Happy Hour means certain cocktails are less, so we ordered two at a time to save waiting. The flavours were there, and the drinks weren’t very strong. We left a lot less woozy than expected, but maybe that’s a good thing? The service was fabulous though and this is a lovely looking venue, very quirky.

The Plotting Parlour is the crème de la crème of cocktails bars and is Brighton’s best kept secret. You’d be forgiven for not knowing about the venue as it’s tucked away down a side Street, in between Bar Broadway and Revenge Bar and specialises in signature creations you won’t find anywhere else, serving locally sourced, ingredients with seasonal menu changes. First impressions? To say it’s boujee AF is an understatement. Clearly no money was spared on the interior which boasts a speakeasy theme, with a bronze metal fronted bar, high tables and stools on one side and intimate booths on the other, perfect for a clandestine meeting or hot date. We went with a Fear and Loathing; Mezcal, roasted pineapple and chilli, one word; delicious... Continued on page 29

There’s an old saying, ‘No amount of physical contact could ever match the healing powers of a well-made cocktail’ and here at Discover towers we are inclined to agree.

The Plotting Parlour The Gin Tub

Cocktails in the City continued

The ingredients were the perfect balance of sweet and slightly spicy with a hint of top quality tequila as the bass note. You get what you pay for here and although it isn’t cheap, the cocktails are worth it.

Blackrock Restaurants are behind Burnt Orange. The restaurant and cocktail bar opened its doors last year. Table booked, we arrived shortly before 10pm on a Saturday evening and the approach immediately gave holiday vibes. You enter through an intimate cobbled courtyard filled with bistro tables, glowing fairy lights and gorgeous climbing green foliage. This is clearly a place to come and enjoy the start of your weekend in style, a low-key party buzz before venturing further afield. We opted for a Sparkling Sorbet featuring; Cazcabel Honey, Lemon Cordial, Grapefruit Bitters, Prosecco and Passion Fruit Sorbet. The drink arrived in a long stemmed Coupe glass with its own spoon. A light lemon coloured liquid filled the interior with a generous ball of the aforementioned sorbet floating on top, which stirred into the cocktail. Delightful, make sure you book as this place is constantly busy.

Next location was Hove and most people are familiar with The Gin Tub on Church Road. However, it was our first visit

and our experience definitely lived up to expectations. The interior is instagrammable with vintage telephones on each table so you can order your drinks, (just dial 0) a unique touch. Furthermore, Happy Hour is until 7pm. We opted for a Butterscotch White Russian which was a bit like drinking a Werthers sweet, but obvs alcoholic and delicious. Technically not a cocktail bar, but we definitely need to give Halisco on Preston Street a mention, as they serve NINE different flavoured Margaritas, yes you read that right, nine. In our option this Mexican creation is the ultimate cocktail and always puts a smile on our face.

A final mentioned must be made about George Street Tap who have a classic cocktail menu that are two for one. Finally, hats off to Paris Wine Bar this well loved hotspot in central Hove, has outside seating front and back where you can enjoy an amazing array of wines, beers and spirits while catching some rays. It had recently undergone a transformation with the rear garden now boasting a retractable sun roof and state of the art heating. Very friendly service and the Porn Star Martini really got the spot. Lunchtimes are better if you prefer a quieter catch up.

One Garden Brighton A Place for Everyone

The sun was (almost) shining as I rambled my way up through Stanmer Park for my first ever visit to One Garden. Situated to the left of Stanmer House, the walled garden is deceptively large with much to see and do. The whole space comprises of the gardens, which play host to seasonal children’s activities, a dog grooming studio, a market, restaurant, outside bar, perfectly manicured lawns and classrooms hidden away from the public areas. First stop was the market and I was greeted with a colourful display of fruit and vegetables and delighted to discover that most of the produce is grown on site. Vibrant bouquets are also arranged by the florist students, meaning you can purchase gorgeous flowers for less than your typical city florist bunch. Obviously I was excited to puruse the wine section and even more overjoyed to see it is locally sourced from Plumpton.

After grabbing a Latte and a homemade Hot Cross Bun, I sat outside to enjoy the burgeoning sunshine and people watch. If you want to buy plants and flowers for your own garden, this is the place to come. Again, the plants are grown here by the horticulture students and their are many to choose from.

My next stop was One Kitchen, the on-site restaurant which sits at the heart of the garden. High quality, seasonal dishes are served here, with brunch, lunch and roast dinners available and once again the produce is taken from the on-site plot and Plumpton Estate. There is ample outside seating and the whole space is dog friendly. The outside bar sits adjacent to the restaurant and will be open during the many events coming up later in the season. There’s something very wholesome about the whole symbiosis between the students, gardeners and outlets here. I love the fact that One Garden sustains itself with what it grows. There aren’t many places left unexplored by me, and this was one of them - it’s an oasis of calm away from the hustle of Brighton and I fully intend to spend more time here. I am almost reluctant to share this information, the garden feels like a secret I want to keep to myself, it’s one of those special places where you can luxuriate in nature and as I walked back across Stanmer Park I felt revitalised.

Coached Recovery

People who train hard will tell you the toll it can take on your body. From painful muscles to slight injuries, keeping fit and staying in shape isn’t always a walk in the park. Sol Gilbert, owner and head coach at Underground Gym has the solution. He has created a revolutionary recovery suite which you can access as both a member and non-member, so even if you train elsewhere, you can still reap the many benefits at Coached Recovery Centre with a recovery only membership which also includes a coffee shop where you can grab a smoothie and meet new people. So what can you expect? First it’s into a state of the art shower, from there you are advised to spend 10 to 15 minutes in the sauna. This is followed by the rain shower with exfoliating gloves to remove any dead skin, then it’s into the ice bath (arghh).

Research shows that ice baths not only help to relieve muscle pain, but are also beneficial for mental health. Multiple studies have shown that cold exposure can activate the sympathetic nervous system and increase endorphins. So what happens when you enter an ice bath? After the initial shock of submersion, adrenaline starts to course through the body. Your heart races. You may panic.

Although you can’t sense it, your blood pressure is skyrocketing, and glucose and fats are being released into your

bloodstream, providing an energy source should you need to make a quick escape. This is the classic ‘fight-or-flight’ response. The process also activates electrical nerve impulses which extend from the brain to the nervous system, and demonstrate similar effects to antidepressants. Adrenaline isn’t the only hormone at play after a cold plunge. Cortisol, a stress hormone, is also released from your adrenal glands, which maintains this state for minutes to hours, while a surge of beta-endorphin hormones in the brain provides pain relief and gives a sense of euphoria. Norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter, is released into your blood, improving your focus, attention and mood. It’s also the primary driver behind the anti-inflammatory effects of cold water therapy, and the benefits it can have for people with chronic stress, anxiety and depression.

After the ice bath your recovery process is completed by using compression boots which use pneumatic compression, in basic terms this means they inflate and deflate, creating different pressure at different points on your leg, helping to improve blood flow and in turn aid recovery.
