THE BEST THINGS COME

SMALL B ATCHES.

Brighton & Hove’s local coffee roaster since 2006.

To us, being small just means doing things the right way, not the easy way. We’re called Small Batch because we roast our coffee daily in small batches to ensure the quality and freshness of every single cup. This ideal drives every part of our business, from sourcing green coffee all the way to brewing the final cup.

We have six of our own cafés dotted over Brighton & Hove, each with their unique individuality. We do coffee extremely well, but that’s not all - get brunch at Norfolk Square, an affogato at Seven Dials, and a smoothie at Goldstone Villas.

Our coffee is roasted for everyone, including other local coffee shops. And now, you can try a new bean every month at home, delivered through your letterbox with our online subscription. Scan the QR code for your coffee subscription!

Valentine’s Day 2023

Our Features Editor, Samantha Harman has been hard at work this month to bring you Valentine’s ideas three ways, on a budget, medium spend and high-end xso there’s inspiration for all our readers on how to spend the most romantic day of the year. So, you’re not exactly rolling in money, but still want to celebrate in style this Valentine’s Day? Or If budget is no limit, take a look at our recommendations for the ultimate Valentine’s Day in our amazing city.

The Budget Friendly Option...

Not all of us are financially blessed, but luckily we are all blessed to live in a fantastic city where finding romantic things to do with your valentine won’t break the bank. One of the wonders of living by the sea is the hundreds of Starlings which gather each year from October to March between the city’s iconic Piers to provide us with a free show. Moving in unison, the birds make spectacular patterns in the sky at dusk each evening, a mass aerial stunt with Brighton’s illustrious sunset as a backdrop. The tiny winged creatures hold the attention of many onlookers who gather on the beach to witness this truly natural phenomena. It is thought they do this for many reasons, firstly for safety. Grouping together means it’s hard for predators such as Peregrine Falcons to target one bird amid a hypnotising flock of hundreds. They also gather to keep warm at night and to exchange information such as good feeding areas. The birds meet near the roosting site (West Pier) to perform their wheeling stunts before settling down for bedtime. We’re not crying, you are. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) lists Brighton as one of the best places in the UK to see a murmuration, so how could you not take up their recommendation? This amazing spectacle is perfect for a Valentine’s stoll on the beach. Why not grab a fluffy blanket and a bottle of something fizzy and some chips go and watch them with your loved one? Discover recommends Fillets on Lewes Road who offer many amazing meals and some of the best, chunky chips around; filletsfishandchips.co.uk.

February is the last opportunity to witness the Starlings before they head off back to northerly areas of the UK and Europe.

Steel Magnolias

Theatre Royal Tue 28 Feb to Sat 4 Mar

The original stage play of Steel Magnolias comes to the Theatre Royal this February. The 1989 film adaptation of the hit heart-warming play, starring Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton, was a huge success and is beloved by audiences around the world. Now is your chance to see the story live on stage. This is a brand new production of the beloved stage play based on a true story, touring the UK in 2023. Their Brighton stop is 28th February - 4th March. Starring Laura Main (of Call the Midwife), Diana Vickers (as seen on The X Factor and various theatre roles) and Lucy Speed (of Eastenders and The Archers.) Originally written by Robert Harding, and first performed off broadway in 1987, Steel Magnolias tells the tale of six women who come together in a small-town beauty parlour in the American South amongst the chaos of work, family and everyday life. The friends unite over both the highs and the lows of life, with plenty of laughter and gossip along the way. This iconic play is funny, touching and testimony to the power of female friendship. It’s still as relevant in 2023 as it was in 1987. Take the women that you couldn’t do life without to go see it from 28th February.

Jo & Co

Ever Dine, Ever Wine, Ever Ours

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but being a busy working woman I can only just about squeeze in a coffee first thing, so was absolutely delighted to be invited along to Jo & Co who won first place in Best Team and top three in Best Brunch in the BRAVO Awards, ‘22. The venue situated on Church Road in Hove is incredibly chic. A bright and welcoming space, featuring a mezzanine floor complete with hanging foliage and quirky pastel wallpaper. It’s the perfect setting to catch up with friends, or quietly work while enjoying a latte or three.

Proprietor Jo greeted me and my plus one at the door and subsequent to seating us at a comfortable booth, we were presented with menus. Making a decision wasn’t easy, but we eventually settled on a Full English and shredded Ham Hock Benedict with Oat Vanilla Lattes. The coffee (sourced from Australia and New Zealand) is served in glass mugs, a smooth and delightful start to our brunch experience. The food arrived without delay and I was impressed with the presentation, and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. All the ingredients are high quality, the egg was perfectly poached with a golden centre that oozed out under my knife onto the sourdough toast. I devoured the crispy bacon and well cooked sausage, hash browns, fresh tomato and mushrooms and small pot of baked beans. Absolute heaven and one of the nicest cooked breakfasts I’ve eaten. The Benedict also delivered. A lightly toasted muffin topped with shredded ham hock and poached eggs smothered in creamy Hollandaise. Every bite was perfection, the salty ham complimented the delicate flavours of the egg and sauce, I honestly could have eaten two of everything. Side note, I did share these two dishes with my dining partner in case you were wondering…

To finish, Bloody Marys. Jo & Co make one of the best, double vodka and just the right amount of spice, garnished with fresh rosemary and a celery stick. There’s something decadent about day drinking when brunch is involved (as opposed to a park bench) but we resisted the urge to order another and wobbled happily out of the door to catch the bus back into Brighton.

The Valentine’s Issue

It’s my first Valentine’s Day with my partner and our sex life is great but I’d like to spice things up and introduce some toys in the bedroom. I’m quite shy and don’t know how to introduce this. Can you help and also make some suggestions to what I could use but without scaring them?

Introducing new things in the bedroom can be nerve-racking, but it can also be exciting and bring new levels of pleasure to your relationship. One way to bring up the topic is to talk about it in a nonthreatening way, such as bringing up a TV show or article you read about couples who use sex toys and asking your partner their thoughts on it. Start by talking about your desires and explaining how you think introducing a sex toy could enhance your sexual experience together, and ask if they’re open to exploring together. You could each write a list of ‘yes/no/maybe’ things you would like to try and compare lists. Be respectful of your partner’s boundaries and listen to their concerns, address them and be open to discussing any reservations they may have. When it comes to buying sex toys, there are many options to choose from. A good place to start is with a small, non-intimidating toy such as a bullet vibrator, which can be used during foreplay or sex to stimulate different erogenous zones. A bullet vibrator is a great starting point for couples looking to introduce sex toys into their relationship. They are small, non-intimidating and versatile. You can use them during foreplay or intercourse to stimulate different erogenous zones and provide extra stimulation for both partners. They are also relatively inexpensive and easy to use, making them a great option for those new to sex toys. Other options include a wand vibrator, these are a bit bigger than a bullet and can be used for external and internal stimulation - they are great for a non-sexual massage too! Another option is a couples ring, these are worn by the penis owner (or on a dildo) during intercourse to provide extra stimulation to both partners. Another great way to discover more about your partner, and yourself, is through a sexy game ‘Monogamy’ and ‘Our Sex Game’ are two of our faves. You can also suggest that you both shop for a toy together, or choose a toy each - Lust! Is a great place to do this btw - you could say the first trip is only a window shop. Remember, introducing new things into the bedroom can be a sensitive topic, so approach the conversation with care and respect for your partner’s feelings. Happy Valentine’s! Tim Richardson and Calandra Balfour own the adult shops Taboo and Lust! They are sex educators and sex-therapy informed practitioners.

Khalil Properties Short-Term

Lettings

At Khalil Properties, we have the experience and the expertise to help you get the most out of your property. One way that we can do this is by working with you on short-term lettings: renting out your property on a short-term basis. Demands for hotel alternatives have increased in recent years and this is a prime market that we can help you explore. The benefits of short-term letting include:

Flexible pricing: As the lets are agreed for a shorter period, you can adjust your prices more regularly to keep up with changing demand and competition. You’re not tied into a fixed price over a long period, as with a long-term let.

Higher income generation - As prices can be raised during peak times and adjusted to keep bookings flowing throughout the year, you’ll be able to maximise your potential income. You can strategize your bookings to get the maximum return on your investment.

Flexibility with tenants - Obviously, hopefully all tenants are wonderful. But just in case they’re not, you’re not tied into a long-term contract. You can find better tenants quickly.

Regular involvement with your property - The faster turnover of tenants means that you can access your property more regularly if you want to. It’s easy to have access for maintenance or to check the property. If you’re interested in working with us to take advantage of the short-term lettings market, call Ahmed at Khalil Properties on 01273 573960 or visit khalilproperties.co.uk.
