There’s Something About Yungblud.

Who is the charismatic, wildly hyperactive young man known as Yungblud? Discover did some investigation to find 15 interesting facts about the musical dynamo, who performs at Chalk later this month, on the 29th.

1. Yungblud’s real name is Dominic Richard Harrison, his stage name is a play on the term ‘young blood’. 2. He was born on August 5th, 1996 and his star sign is Leo. 3. Dominic had a famous grandfather, Rick Harrison who performed with the infamous psychedelic band T-Rex, fronted by Marc Bolan in the 1970s. 4. He learned how to play the guitar at 8 years old, and also the drums and piano. 5. The star’s parents have always been supportive of his desire to be different. His mum allowed him to wear black nail polish and lipstick, coupled with chunky goth boots from the age of 10. When she was chastised by a person in the street, ‘how can you let your son dress like that?’ she responded with a long tirade in his defense. What a lady. 6. He stands up for his fans, telling them it’s ok to be different and not fit in and perhaps this is a direct result of his own upbringing. 7. At school he was labelled as ‘naughty’ and consequently dropped out at the age of 16 to pursue a career in Rock ‘n’ Roll. 8. He also left performing arts school saying, “I went to arts school in London for a bit, but then kind of figured it wasn’t for me. It was the kind of place where they would tell me what to do and how to express myself, and I didn’t agree with that. I had my blinkers on and knew what I wanted to be and the school didn’t go in tangent with that, so

I’ve kind of been in my own world since I was 16.” 9. Yungblud’s debut album, ‘21st Century Liability’, was released July 6th, 2018, and made him an immediate sensation all over the world. He reportedly said the album is, ‘An accumulation of all the emotions and anger I’ve felt all my life.’ 10. His song ‘Time in a Bottle’ is the soundtrack for 2019’s Fast and Furious soundtrack, Hobbs and Shaw. 11. The singer identifies as straight, but told Attitude Magazine, “If I walked down the street tomorrow and met a f**king bloke or trans person, you never know, I am very fluid.” 12. Yungblud has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and it is this wild energy that his fans love and perhaps give him the drive to succeed on his own terms. 13. The singer’s biggest influences are, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Arctic Monkeys, Madonna and The Clash. He also loves Billie Eilish (Wouldn’t they make the best aesthetic couple?) 14. His lyrics open discussion for important political and social issues such as gun control in the USA, sexual assault issues and the destructive impact of modern technology on our mental health. 15. His favourite food is a bacon sandwich on white bread with ketchup and a cup of tea, he enjoys eating this while feeding his pigeons. Sounds like our kind of guy.

It’s Shocktober!

It’s the spooky season! Fancy a fright? Get down to Shocktober Fest at Tulley’s Farm for a night of immersive scares through live action scenery, fabulous special effects and terrifying storytelling. This is Europe’s largest scream park and it’s right on our doorstep here in Sussex. Now celebrating 26 years of fun and frights, Tulley’s Farm is just outside Crawley in West Sussex. They run various events throughout the year, but it’s their infamous Shocktober Fest that we’re excited to tell you about this October. It’s been repeatedly voted the number one Halloween event in the UK and has hordes of fans. Or is that hordes of zombies roaming the park? Those hordes of undead are definitely wandering Doom Town, one of the exciting new attractions in the Shocktober Fest line-up for 2022. Hell has split open and zombies are roaming around, looking for food. Can you escape to find sanctuary? Or will you be joining the residents of Doom Town? Another new attraction we’re buzzing for for this year is the Electrick Circus: a terrifying abandoned circus scene with an electrifying, supercharged twist. The inhabitants are a gang of clowns and their leader is Sparky, who has not come to play. Can you survive or will the shock be too much? These join the established array of thrilling attractions already at Shocktober Fest, beloved by fans. The Horrorwood Hayride is a particular fan favourite - jump on a trailer and

explore the abandoned Horrorwood Film Studios, a relic from the Golden Age of cinema. But are there other relics on set from these bygone days that just won’t quite die? The Creepy Cottage is another firm favourite for fans, since it opened in 1998. The Cottage is a house that really doesn’t welcome visitors! Previous cottage inhabitants haunt the winding corridors, plus the broken floorboards and lights don’t exactly help either. This is the haunted house taken to another level! If it’s a traumatic ritual that you fancy, then the HellElements attraction is for you. Put on a hood and walk amongst the shadows. Senses challenged and with only a rope for guidance - can you trust your instincts in the dark? Or you could take a trip to the Chop Shop. This may seem like three innocent brothers just trying to run a little family car business, but they have a dark secret. Maybe those chainsaws aren’t just for chopping up car parts? Don’t forget to take in the Circus of Horrors, too! This is the world famous Dr Haze and his army of freaks are returning to Shocktober Fest with a brand new horrifying twenty minute live show. This is a spectacle not to be missed! All this plus other amazing, atrocious attractions are waiting at Tulley’s Farm if you’re brave enough! Shocktober Fest is running through most nights in October and into early November. Head to shocktoberfest.co.uk to check dates and book tickets, from £12.00.

Arcobaleno.

Arcobaleno Launches New Menu

Brighton’s newest LGBTQ+ venue located on St George’s Rd in Brighton finally launched their highly anticipated new menu last month and I clicked my heels together in delight to return to the Wizard of Oz themed venue to be one of the first to sample the new food. I chose to sit in the secluded beer garden located at the rear of the venue with a pint of Moretti with a lemonade top (ever classy) while perusing the delights on offer. Arcobaleno is the only establishment in the city serving Malteseinspired food. I have never tried this cuisine before and was looking forward to a brand new taste experience. To start I ordered the Maltese platter, consisting of Kapunata, fresh pickles, Maltese sausage, burnt aubergine, cannellini beans in extra virgin olive oil, sun dried tomatoes, olives and warm bread. All of the aforementioned items were delicious, the food is reminiscent of Mediterranean Meze with a heartier twist. All the ingredients were fresh and the flatbread was homemade. I particularly enjoyed the sausage, which was very well seasoned and the olives were huge and moreish. This platter gives you a little bit of everything which is perfect if you are unsure on what to order. It is the ultimate Maltese-inspired starter. Up next, smashed beef and pork meatballs, served in a rich tomato sauce with parmesan and a side of potatoes. This dish really is comfort food at its very best, the sauce was rich and the meatballs well cooked, they literally fell apart while

I was eating them. This dish reminded me of a Maltese-inspired version of a beef stew, something that warms you from the inside out, like getting a fat hug from a fine looking man in a fluffy jumper. Once again It was evident high quality ingredients had been used. I was pleasantly full when I had finished my meal and couldn’t resist popping into the kitchen to meet the Chef. I was surprised to discover she isn’t Maltese, but hails from the north of England. She told me what I already suspected, they only use the freshest ingredients, with nothing coming out of packets. It is clear Chef is passionate about cooking and she has certainly delivered the ultimate comfort food menu. Food is served Thursday to Saturday from 4pm - 9pm with the kitchen changing their hours at weekends from midday - 5pm. My advice is make sure you try this unique menu, it is reasonably priced and will leave you feeling loved and happy. The venue launched their new revised Autumnal menu last week, so there are slight changes to when I visited. Please note Arcobaleno also plays host to a plethora of free drag, cabaret and burlesque at weekends and quiz nights, student nights, cocktail club and karaoke during the week. Their cocktails are all Wizard of Oz themed and hand shaken by highly trained mixologists. Get yourselves along to this inclusive safe space, to see and be seen.

WOLFOX CHAPTERS a unique and innovative BRUNCH & DINNER RESTAURANT with a stunning TOWNHOUSE BOUTIQUE HOTEL www.wolfox.co.uk

Rock Down To Third Avenue.

Since the start of July, Third Avenue has been under new management, featuring a newly refurbished, beautiful interior and new menus. Entering Third Avenue is like being transported to a by-gone era, there’s an immediate colonial vibe with high ceilings and wooden panelling. The artwork adorning every wall is an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary, making an interesting juxtaposition and talking point. The venue is old school glamour personified, with comfortable peach velvet clad seating, a gold centralised bar and candle lit tables, making it the perfect setting for a romantic tete-a-tete or special celebration. The restaurant and late night bar also boasts a secret gold nightclub in the basement with a 2am weekend license (shh) . Overall, a relaxed and decadent space. To start I ordered a Lychee Rose Martini which was presented in an oversized coupe glass, garnished with edible flowers. The delicate flavours of the rose and lychee complimented each other perfectly, and the drink was ice cold. An extremely well balanced cocktail that went down rather too well (and quickly). Moving on to the small plates menu which is broken down into fish, meat, veggie and vegan. My dining partner and I ordered a grand selection; Pan Roasted Scallops with Caramelised Cauliflower and Morcilla (that’s blood sausage to you and I), Grilled Gambas with Nduja Butter and Chive, Chicken Pintxos Morunos Skewers, Blistered Padron Peppers, Charred Hispi Cabbage and Flatbread. The food arrived with enough of a delay to get stuck into a bottle of the house white,

a Vermentino Les Archeres, crisp and light with subtle apple flavours. The star of the show for me was the cabbage. As the menu suggested, it was charred just the right amount and came with a Tahini dressing, sprinkled with crispy cavolo (similar to seaweed) and toasted pine nuts. It had retained its crunch and was the first item we got stuck into. I must praise the chef for his ingenuity, such a simple dish but really well done and filling. Let’s say this is a vegetable with substance and class. Every plate was beautifully presented with the scallops winning first prize. They came with lattices of caramalised cauliflower which I have never seen before, a dish that is as easy on the eye as it is on the palate. The peppers were sprinkled with rock salt and tasted exactly the same as any you would find in a decent Tapas joint and all the meat and shellfish we ordered was cooked to an exemplary standard, no dry disappointments to be found here. The flatbread was homemade and made an excellent accompaniment to mop up all of the delicious sauces left on our empty plates. Onto dessert, and I cannot ever resist creme brulee, for me it has everything you need from something sweet. Third Avenue’s version is orange and cardamom with two homemade shortbread biscuits. A delicate crack of caramalised sugar revealed a delicious, not too sweet creamy custard laced with the aforementioned flavours. A final note to thank our waitress Elva, who had great knowledge of the menu and was a delightful host. I will definitely return.

Sunshine on a plate.

After a recent rewatch of Mamma Mia, I was left pondering not only the slightly questionable singing but also just how inviting that Greek island looked. Unfortunately I’m not able to nip off to Greece so I thought I’d do the next best thing, which is pay a visit to the Adelfia restaurant on Preston Street. Adelfia is a true family Greek restaurant. Brothers Yiannis and Andreas are at the helm of the business, with the former taking charge in the kitchen and the latter leading the way at the front of house. The two grew up with their Greek father’s cooking and wanted to bring a genuine taste of home to the Brighton restaurant scene. The menu is an impressive who’s who of authentic Greek cuisine. All the classics you’d hope to see are here, plus some you may not have heard of. A thorough tour of delicious things. Let’s start at the beginning - the starters. One thing that is very important in any Greek meal is the tzatziki, of course. This was a generous serving of delicious Greek yoghurt with garlic, cucumber, olive oil and vinegar dip, served with delicate slices of pitta bread. The tzatziki was light, fresh and the pitta bread was really tasty. I could have eaten five portions. I had to try the Octopus Sti Skara starter, too. This was grilled octopus served in bite size pieces, seasoned with a red wine vinegar and sprinkled with oregano. Tentacled creatures can sometimes be rubbery in the hands of lesser chefs but no such danger here. This octopus was tender and very delicious. We were sad when the plate was empty. I was cheered up by the Saganaki, though: a Greek kefalotyri cheese, lightly flavoured with herbs and oils and then fried. This was a parcel of delicious

cheesy goodness: the outside a crispy envelope, the inside wonderful salty yet light cheese. Proper moreish, lip-smacking food. The final foray in starters was the Olive Pâté Selection, a beautiful plate of green and black olive Pâtés, with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and more of that delicious pitta bread to mop it all up with. Olive oil and balsamic vinegar are good with all things (this is just the law) but they were especially good with the salty, rich olive Pâtés on offer here. Now on to the stars of the show - some main courses. The lovely Andreas made some recommendations here and who was I to ignore his advice? The Kleftico is a firm favourite among Adelfia regulars and when it came it was easy to see why: a lamb shank atop a bed of potatoes and a sauce so light and delicate you could call it a broth. The lamb is slow roasted and so tender that it really did melt in the mouth. The sauce was marvellous: full of flavour but not overwhelming the meaty main attraction. Andreas also recommended the Fish of The Day. On my visit, this was a sea bass served whole (although they will fillet the fish if you prefer) and beautifully grilled, seasoned with lemon, olive oil and oregano, served with homemade chips and a side salad. This was a wonderful demonstration of a (deceptively) simple dish done very well indeed. The delicate sea bass was complimented perfectly by the lemon and herbs. The chips were excellent. The atmosphere at Adelfia was welcoming, relaxed and comfortable. The service was fabulous and I will definitely be back to try more. My boyfriend and I have just moved into a new rented flat together. Our bedroom wall is connected to our neighbour’s living room and it is clear that they can hear everything going on when we have sex. They sometimes bang on the wall and tell us to be quiet. This has made me very shy about being intimate but I don’t want to be cheated out of a sex life by my neighbour. What can we do?

Well that’s a passion killer! May I recommend moving? Or even better, inviting your neighbour to move? Joking aside, thank you for writing in with your quandary. There are many readers who I’m sure can identify, whether it is neighbours listening in through thin walls, flatmates, parents, or children in the room next door. However, it is one thing if you know someone can hear you, but it is completely another if those people are telling you off for doing something so natural in the privacy of your own home. I can absolutely appreciate your feeling shy as a result, and how this situation could impact your sex life. How can your sex life and your neighbours co-exist happily? Firstly – location, location, location - can you have sex in another part of your accommodation? The bedroom is the place most as sociated with having sex, but could your sitting room set the scene for your sexy time? Secondly – like a good joke - is the solution all about timing? When is it your neighbours complain? Could you use your bedroom for erotic activities at times when you know when your neighbours aren’t in the sitting room? If changing location or timing isn’t possible, my tongue in cheek reply is: can I recommend a ball gag? A ball gag is one way to silence or at least turn down the volume of your passion, whilst adding an extra frisson to your love making. A simple ball-gag can be bought from either Taboo, Lust! or other reputable adult shops from £9.95. Good luck with exploring a new sexual schedule and please don’t feel the neighbours are cheating you out of a great sex life, this predicament just requires some inventiveness and exploration which in itself may add to your intimate experience.

Tim Richardson and Calandra Balfour own the adult shops Taboo and Lust! They are sex educators and an emotional wellbeing therapists.

Melanie Haagman.

Melanie Haagman is a teacher and author based in Brighton who had her second book, ‘Lost in Mind; Found at Heart’ published earlier this year. The book is a collection of poems chronicling the experience of being a woman in the world today. It’s a journey of reflection, self-growth, wit and heart. We sat down to talk with Melanie about the book, what inspires her and why writing is so important.

What was the inspiration for the book? “I wrote this book as a way of reflecting on everyday life occurrences and feelings. Writing for me has always been a form of therapy and, when I began sharing my poems, I was told it is also a form of therapy to read them. The poems are relatable and will hopefully strike a chord! The main mes sage is that, regardless of what life throws at us, if we stay true to our morals and are led by our heart, we will always find the way! Have you always been a writer? This is my second published book; my first book was a collection of poems that captured the lockdowns in rhyme. I started writing as a child and again I think it has always been an innate coping mechanism to make sense of un certain times. When I write I feel lighter, and I love finding the right rhymes to portray these real-life situations.”

Do you find inspiration in teaching? “As a teacher,

I love teaching poetry. Often pupils have been exposed to poetry they can’t relate to. I love finding current and relatable content to work on with my pupils and igniting that enjoyment. I love that there are no rules, and it gives pupils freedom to write however they want to in a way to express themselves that is right for them.”

Do you believe creativity is important? “I think it’s so important to be creative and find out what type of creativity brings you the most joy and sat isfaction. Especially in the fast-paced world that we all live in today, finding that time to immerse yourself into something that allows you to entirely switch off from external stressors is key!”

Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

“In my spare time, I co-run a digital magazine called Open Door Poetry Magazine. It is an online platform that showcases unknown talented poets, authors and artists. We create a digital monthly magazine that is free to subscribe to and anyone can submit on our website opendoorpoetrymag azine.com. We know how hard it is to get work out there so we wanted to ensure that the work of talented people can be enjoyed by as many people as possible!”

Style Me Pretty.

Located in the vibrant shopping area of Seven Dials is Style Me Pretty, a salon offering hair extensions and professional make up. Owner, Dionne is proud to announce the salon will now also offer a meshless integration system for hair loss. Speaking to Discover she revealed, ‘ I have so many gorgeous 22-year-olds come to me for hair extensions and it isn’t difficult to make them look stunning as they already are without the extensions. I wanted to give something back and do something worthwhile that will really change someone’s life for the better which is why I am now offering this revolutionary new hair loss system.’ The meshless system is an upgraded version of the traditional mesh integration, it is designed to fit comfortably and securely on top of your natural hair by utilising all of your own hair to create a foundation using a channeling technique. This system protects your hair, allowing it time to repair and grow. A hypoallergenic material is applied so that a partial or full hair topper and wfts can be added to create a discreet and natural looking head of hair. Not only does it look real, but it also feels real too. You can wash and style your system as you would your own hair and carry on normal

everyday life, like swimming or going to the gym. The system is worn continuously for 10-12 weeks then it is removed and subsequent to a check of your natural hair, it is then reapplied. The meshless integration system is the perfect solution to many hair loss problems in women and Dionne is whole heartedly behind this new technique, saying, ‘ I feel like hair loss in women is a massive taboo subject, women aren’t supposed to age or suffer with hair loss. I want to let any potential clients know that there is nothing to be ashamed of and hair loss occurs quite a lot among women of a certain age due to perimenopause and other conditions. My salon is a 1-2-1, non judgment zone and your privacy is paramount. I want you to leave feeling empowered and looking amazing.’ The system helps if you are suffering with any of the following conditions: Alopecia Post Chemo Telegenic Effluvium Trichotillomania Menopause/

Perimenopause

Receding Hairline Bald Patches
