In 2013 he was named ‘Young Welder of the Year’ by the South African Institute of Welding, and represented South Africa at the World Skills Competition in Germany. The ‘Young Welder of the Year’ competition comprises three welding categories - carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Houston won all three categories and was the first participant to do so since the inception of the competition in 2005, when another West Coast College Student, Thembinkosi Matyeka, won the competition. For Houston it was a dream come true when he won the competition. “I cannot describe the feeling. I was just very excited to represent South Africa in Germany. One day I will look back proudly on this achievement.” Over its 60-year history, World Skills International (formerly known as the "Skill Olympics") has come to symbolise the pinnacle of excellence in vocational training. Every two years hundreds of young skilled people, accompanied by their teachers and trainers, get together from around the world to compete in front of the public in the skills of their various trades and test themselves against demanding international standards. They represent the best of their peers, drawn from regional and national skill competitions held currently in 67

As part of the FET colleges’ Work Integrated Learning Programmes, students are expected to be exposed to the workplace during their studies. This takes place during college holidays and involves students having to observe and perform menial duties in workplaces. Houston is one of the many success stories of the colleges’ placement programmes supported by the Setas and industry. Companies and organisations wishing to participate in this National Skills Development effort, may contact the Placement Coordinator Mr Lumkile Ralarala at 021 577 1727, or Gert Witbooi 022 482 1143.
