Welcome!

Welcome to your March/April 2024 edition of Diamond, providing another great opportunity for you to tell your stories and promote your business.

As you know, we also like to use Diamond to keep you fully informed on gdb events and other initiatives, so are pleased to feature the finalists for the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards 2024 ahead of the big night on 21st March at The Grand, Brighton. We wish all our finalists the very best of luck and send huge thanks to our Headline,

Category and Reception Sponsors for their fantastic support (full details on pages 6 & 7).

Being able to inspire others through celebrating your success is a true privilege for gdb, and on page 10 you can read all about another initiative designed to inspire and motivate which took place in January; the gdb Re-Energise Conference 2024. This year’s Conference took place at the beautiful Stanhill Court Hotel and was another resounding success, with guests treated to an exceptional line up of truly inspirational speakers with the added professional flair of our Host & Compere, John Young.

Paying tribute to International Women's Day this year, at our Crawley College Business Breakfast on Thursday 7th March we are looking forward to hearing from Anya Ledwith, founder of environmental & carbon management consultancy, Eshcon. Details on how to book are on page 39 as well as on our website, along with lots more upcoming events.

And in this edition of Diamond, our Member Spotlight shines on Andrew Sewell of WessexIT. A gdb member since 2007, Andrew highlights some of the profile-raising benefits he and his business have enjoyed from being part of the gdb community (page 4). Highlighting a significant step change

for our region with the Northern Runway project moving in to the examination phase and following an overwhelmingly positive response from our recent survey, I was privileged to attend the recent Gatwick Airport DCO Open Floor Hearing and present to the Planning Inspectorate on behalf of you, the Gatwick Diamond Business Membership. Take a look at page 28 for London Gatwick’s latest news update and click HERE for more information from the Planning Inspectorate.

My thanks as usual to Creative Pod for the design of Diamond and to all of you who have contributed your news, inspiring stories and advice, and thanks go to Barney Durrant and Bluebell Marketing for sponsoring this edition. Barney is a proactive member of the gdb Executive Council, and this year marks Bluebell Marketing’s 10 years in business. Take a look at page 19 to find out more about their services.

Staying with the theme of inspiration, my final comment is for Ron, a D-Day hero who you can see on page 17. A resident of new gdb Charity Member, Care for Veterans, Ron has just celebrated his 101st birthday! Thank you, Ron, and a belated Happy Birthday from everyone at Gatwick Diamond Business!

SPOTLIGHT

1. What appealed to you about joining gdb?

I was invited along as a guest and was instantly made to feel very welcome - the meeting was also upbeat and lively. My first points of contact were the likes of Jeremy Taylor and Susan Fleet. Back in 2007, gdb was known under the name of CADIA, and I have been an active member ever since. The rest is history!

2. What was the thing that surprised you about gdb?

Sally and her wonderful team are always so full of energy, support, and encouragement, as well as delivering a vast array of different events at great quality that are continually uplifting and engaging. Well Done, Team gdb - I love coming along to your events!

3. What’s the biggest single thing you’ve got from being a member of gdb?

Our profile has been raised since becoming a member, and we are now one of the go-to MSPs in the surrounding areas. 

Business

Member since: September 2007

Description: Where great service and creative technology solutions combine, leveraging our portfolio of innovative and bespoke IT support solutions for businesses. We love great service, we love monitoring - we love IT.

“gdb has supported Wessex IT brilliantly and has helped raise our profile exponentially within the region.”

4. What difference has being a member of gdb made to your business?

Personally, I have met lots of different people, made many friends, and received lots of support whilst growing Wessex IT from a business starting out with just two directors, to a team of over 20. We have met many great people and clients, raised money for charity (in a drive from Manor Royal to Monaco), and made the odd acquisition here and there.

5. gdb puts on lots of different types of events - what’s your favourite?

I do enjoy the larger monthly Membership Meet ups, where you can catch up with lots of different people in a relatively short amount of time, share stories and experiences, and build strong relationships between businesses.

However, my favourite events are the Networking at Ease lunches. By having a slightly slower pace of networking and getting to meet 8 or so people at a time at each table or course, you get to hear from a few less people, but form quality relationships. From then, I find you build relationships further with those people that you want to do business with.

6. What’s different about gdb compared to other networking you do?

There is a real great buzz across the entire organisation and there are businesses of all sizes involved within gdb. I really don’t get to meet any of the larger business owners and MDs via other networking opportunities. This is something that gdb are fantastic at doing!

7. What’s your top tip for getting the most out of networking?

Be present. Give your time freely. Support others by helping them find what they need, and you will be remembered for that - this helps grow trust within your peers.

8. Besides the events, what else do you get out of your gdb membership? Mixing with other business owners is a great form of support and reassurance, and knowing a variety of people who can help with lots of different issues is very helpful and useful - from HR, to being linked to the local bank manager!

ORCA's conservation journey transforms with a stunning website redesign by Scaramanga

UK-based marine conservation organisation, ORCA, has nearly 30 years of experience in protecting whales and dolphins in UK waters. They collect data on over 25 cetacean species, contributing to global conservation efforts. ORCA engages the public through various initiatives, including citizen scientist programs, OceanWatcher data collection, donations and sea safaris. ORCA reached out to Scaramanga for

their website redesign commission, with the primary goal being to boost traffic to the Donations page and enhance the imagery. The previous text-heavy site was transformed with parallax images, galleries, and concise text, emphasising a human touch and inclusivity.

Craft was the chosen CMS to build the site, selected for its accessibility and customisation capabilities. The redesign incorporated natural sea colours, rounded corners on the imagery resembling dolphin features and intricate details reflecting ORCA's mission. Deadend pages were eliminated to improve user navigation.

The homepage featured CTAs with striking imagery and looping cetacean videos. The 'State of Cetaceans' section on this page utilised infographics for better visualisation. The Whale & Dolphin

Sightings page employed iconography for quick information conveyance. The Join ORCA page was elevated to encourage more donations, prominently featuring different price plans.

The overall result of this project is a bespoke website that is grown up but approachable and an effective mechanism to convey research. ORCA can now manage and update content independently as Scaramanga set up content templates for them to do so.

“Thank you also for all your hard work with the website, we are so pleased with how it has turned out and have had some really lovely comments from our supporters and volunteers.” - Emily Condley, Supporter Development Officer at ORCA.

Contact Scaramanga to see how they can help with your next website project.

Driving Positive Change: The Transformative Impact of Community Transport Sussex

In the heart of Sussex, Community Transport Sussex (CTS) is not just a transportation provider; it's a lifeline, fostering connectivity and community spirit. Going beyond conventional services, CTS embodies a dedication to inclusivity, sustainability, and community engagement, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

For example, Betty's story is a testament to the 'Book - A-Bus' Digital Demand Responsive Transport scheme's transformative power, liberating her from isolation and enabling independent engagement in daily activities. Betty became widowed and due to ill health could not drive so was literally 'stranded' until she found out about our flexible bus service. It has become a beacon of hope for individuals like Betty who want to restore their independence and build their social lives.

At the core of CTS's operations are dedicated volunteers, selflessly contributing time and energy to support

their community. Their Travel Buddy service exemplifies this community spirit, pairing volunteers with individuals seeking confidence to engage in activities. It's a much in demand service which yields tangible outcomes for all involved. For instance, John, a former Navy serviceman with dementia, now enjoys accompanied trips, providing respite for his wife.

CTS's services extend beyond traditional transportation, encompassing special educational needs school contracts, community group hires, volunteer car drivers, and pandemic-driven efforts to ensure vaccine appointment accessibility. The launch of the first community electric car club in the county reflects their commitment to sustainability and reducing emissions.

From organising social excursions for people who rarely get out to do fun things like visiting a National Trust park for a group afternoon tea, to

helping refugees in areas like Crawley or supporting other groups such as Kangaroos to achieve their goals, CTS showcases how transportation services can transcend their primary function. CTS sets a standard for driving impactful change.

Singapore Airlines to take-off from London Gatwick

London Gatwick has recently announced the latest airline to secure slots at the airport, with Singapore Airlines services taking off from this summer.

The renowned carrier – recently crowned World’s Best Airline at the 2023 Skytrax awards – will begin flying five times per week from London Gatwick to Singapore Changi Airport from 22 June 2024. Flights are available to book now.

Stewart Wingate, CEO, London Gatwick said: “Renowned as one of the world’s best carriers, we are delighted to welcome Singapore Airlines to London Gatwick. It showcases the high regard in which Gatwick is held, and connecting to the impressive Changi Airport is a big boost for the whole region.

“For passengers across London and the South East, the new route will provide huge connectivity potential, not only to the fantastic destination of Singapore, but more widely across

Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. With significant increases in trade between the UK and Singapore in recent years, the service also provides exciting opportunities for local and regional businesses.”

The service will enable passengers across London and the South East to seamlessly transfer onto flights to Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand from award-winning Changi Airport.

Northern Runway planning process continues

London Gatwick’s Northern Runway project has now moved into the examination phase.

Last summer, the airport submitted plans to bring its existing Northern Runway into routine use alongside the Main Runway.

Outsourcing your Logistics & Storage - is

it time?

For many businesses, an outsourced warehouse is essential. From manufacturers to wholesalers, exporters to importers, these types of companies require large spaces to store goods before selling them.

Aside from the space, an effective warehousing service can help increase your productivity and profit. Some of the key benefits are:-

• Consignments can be sorted and stored, quickly and efficiently.

• Once goods have been sold, they can

easily be shipped out across the UK.

• There are additional services available (e.g. Container Decanting & Pick & Pack)

Once a shipment arrives for storage, a team of expert handlers oversees all necessary procedures from start to finish. That means identifying the freight, checking it for any damages and booking-in the consignment to the correct storage location.

Warehouses give you ample space to store all your products in one place and

plan aims to use the airport’s existing infrastructure to unlock new capacity and improve airport resilience, in line with government policy.

By investing in its long-term future, London Gatwick will also enhance the crucial economic role the airport plays, by creating around 14,000 new jobs and injecting £1 billion into the region’s economy every year.

are purpose-built to protect your stock. All sites should have 24 hour CCTV to ensure your stock is not damaged or stolen.

With the development of technology, consignment tracking and traceability has never been so easy. The warehouse team can produce daily reports showing your stock at any one time and the customer can have their own log-in to a Warehouse Management System (WMS) to keep them in control. This also helps businesses know when an item is out of stock and needs replenishing.

Some warehouses, like Eezehaul can also accept containers where loose boxes are unloaded and securely palletised before being put away to store. Pick and Pack is another service that is offered by many warehouses. Is it time to consider outsourcing your storage?

Embracing Disappointment: Navigating Professional Setbacks with Grace

As a coach, I've had the privilege of guiding individuals through various stages of their professional journeys. One aspect that often arises is how to handle disappointment. A promotion you didn’t achieve, a bonus that’s underwhelming, a pitch you did not win. We have all been there, yet it's how we respond that truly defines our growth and resilience.

Here are a few insights I've gleaned: Acknowledge Your Feelings: Disappointment is a natural emotion, and it's okay to feel it deeply. Allow yourself the space to acknowledge and process your feelings before moving forward.

Reflect, Don't Dwell: Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, use disappointment as an opportunity for reflection. What can you learn from this experience? How can you grow from it?

Adjust Your Perspective: Shift from seeing disappointment as a setback to viewing it as a stepping- stone. Every obstacle presents an opportunity for growth and development.

Focus on What You Can Control: It's easy to get caught up in things beyond our control. Redirect your energy towards aspects you can influence, whether it's refining your skills, networking, or exploring new opportunities.

Seek Support: Don't hesitate to lean on your support network. Share your feelings with friends, family or a coach to gain valuable perspective and encouragement.

Keep Moving Forward: Finally, don't let disappointment derail your progress. Use it as fuel to revisit your goals and move forward with renewed determination and focus.

So, in summary, embrace it, learn from it and keep going!

AI, is it a help or is it a hindrance to marketing?

In an ever-evolving digital landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shaping the future of marketing, with unparalleled

efficiency and limitless innovation.

However, the advent of AI-generated content tools presents the necessity of a major balancing act - the allure of AI with the need of maintaining an authentic brand voice to capture your target audience’s attention. While AI undoubtedly aids content creation and sparks innovative ideas, a reliance solely on AI can potentially lead to penalties from search engines in the future, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated at detecting such content. It's a reminder to always balance technology benefits with a human touch.

Be authentic with video

As the digital space becomes more saturated with AI-generated content, authenticity will become a rare and valuable commodity that will distinguish your brand from your competition.

Creating video content can add that much-needed personal touch, giving a

face and voice to your key messages, helping your brand stand out.

It's not about choosing one over the other, but rather integrating AI strategically with genuine, human expression. This combination will create a powerful synergy, enhancing your content's effectiveness and resonance.

Balance the power of AI with a human touch

AI is here to stay! It will be a key tool, but your brand's voice and story are truly yours to own. By masterfully blending AI with the authenticity of the human touch, small business owners can create a narrative that resonates, captivates, and, ultimately, converts leads. It's here, with a delicate balance, that lies the next chapter of growing your business the SMART way.

gdb Re-Energise Conference 2024

The room was buzzing and full of positivity as gdb’s Re-Energise Conference returned to Stanhill Court on the 18th January.

John Young, former Presenter & Reporter for BBC Southeast Today, added his professional flair once again as our host and compere, and our motivational guest speakers left us all feeling Re-Energised and ready for the year ahead, each bringing something different to the event.

First up, John Ryan, CEO of Healthy Place To Work shared his philosophy “You can’t be a healthy organisation if you are full of unhealthy individuals - You can’t be a healthy individual if you work in an unhealthy organisation“. He was fun, insightful and thought-provoking and left us all with a lot to think about around how important organisational health is to business success.

Catherine Fisher, Managing Partner at Morr & Co, was next, shedding light on the evolving landscape of growing and developing female business leaders, and the importance of shaping a diverse culture, giving us valuable take away tips for improving gender diversity.

We then heard from Matt Garman, The Corporate Adventurer,

with a truly inspiring story of his 3 man row across the Atlantic, communicating the importance of vision, people and process and his observation that “growing a company and rowing an ocean are both endurance events”.

Our final speaker, Marc Koska OBE, Founder of APIJECT, was the first ever winner of Business Person of the Year at the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards back in 2009. Best known for inventing the non-reusable auto-disable syringe and saving more than 14 million lives and preventing millions of cases of disease transmission, Marc captivated everyone by sharing details of his often turbulent and shocking journey, leaving us all full of admiration for what he has achieved.

It was great to be back at the beautiful Stanhill Court and to provide an inspiring start to the New Year for our guests. A big thank you to Plan Insurance Brokers, Marshall Volkswagen Gatwick, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council and Morr & Co, our event sponsors, without whom the event would not be possible.

The gdb team are already looking forward to welcoming you back for 2025’s event – keep an eye on our social media for details of the next Re-Energise Conference.

Defibrillators - 6 top tips to save a life

There’s a box in reception.

It’s hanging on the wall, dust settling on top. No-one takes any notice of it.

It’s passed each day by 70 employees and visitors to the building and it’s… invisible.

An unremarkable Tuesday morning when suddenly there’s panic on the third floor. Someone has collapsed. Who are the first aiders? Someone nervously comes forward, adrenalin making them shake uncontrollably.

Is he breathing? He’s making weird noises.

The first aider desperately tries to remember what they were taught over two years ago. They open the airway and check for breathing. It’s not normal. Weird gasping. Someone has phoned 999 and they’re giving instructions for CPR.

The next 14 minutes are a blur of waiting and doing CPR.

Finally, paramedics arrive – loads of them, all at the same time. They get their defibrillator onto the casualty. The defibrillator says “no shock, continue CPR”.

Eventually, they stop resuscitation. The scene is cleared. Those involved are sent home. The following day, they attend a meeting to debrief. Someone asks if the defibrillator was used.

“What defibrillator?”

“The one that’s in reception?”

Confusion first and then realisation. A defibrillator was in the building the whole time.

Would the outcome have been different?

The scenario above was fabricated, however it will have happened somewhere and the following would help.

• Defibrillator location told to every staff

Mind Your Communications…

Most business leaders today face a myriad of challenges that can impede growth and sustainability. One of the most critical yet overlooked aspects is the art of communicating and collaborating mindfully within the organisation. The modern leader and their teams need more than ever to be

able to engage, clarify, and influence other people in their communications to deliver great business outcomes.

SMEs often operate with lean teams where each member's contribution is pivotal. A lapse in communication can lead to misunderstandings, decreased productivity, and a detrimental impact on workplace culture.

Consider the benefits available for business leaders who invest in the communication and collaboration skills to improve engagement: 2023 research suggests that businesses with high levels of engagement compared to low can see 14% higher sales and 18% higher productivity. Additionally, a more mindful approach to communication can significantly improve overall wellbeing, with a reported 68% increase, as well as 43% lower staff turnover. In the realm of safety, a mindful, engaged workplace can result in 64% fewer accidents and

Mirror vs Mutual Wills

Mirror Wills

Many spouses and partners make Mirror Wills. They appoint the same executors, have the same beneficiaries and their estate is divided the same way. They are a mirror reflection of each other. However, there is nothing to stop either party amending their testamentary

wishes at a later stage by making a further Will, revoking their earlier Will.

Mutual Wills

On the face of a Mutual Will, the provisions will also ‘mirror’ each other, however a Mutual Will is a binding contractual agreement that cannot be revoked or varied without the consent of the other party. They can only be rescinded by either party giving notice during their joint lifetime.

For a Mutual Will to be enforceable there must be clear evidence of an agreement to create one and an intention that they are to be irrevocable. If one party dies the survivor will be bound by the Mutual Will and therefore cannot change their Will as they would be in breach of contract. A person may make an application to the Court to

Leaders - are they born or made?

That was the topic of a recent conversation with a local HR Director. There was a sense of frustration within her organisation that mid-managers lacked effective team leadership skills. This had a broader impact on the organisation - on staff morale and retention and also on the quality of work.

There are typically three stages in an employee's life where they need to level up their leadership skills.

The first arises when moving to a team manager role for the first time, where challenges include managing team performance, motivating others, and mastering effective delegation.

The second is moving into a senior manager role - when they’re overseeing managers. Key challenges here include understanding how to ensure everything is progressing well without having direct supervision, setting a team vision, and managing experienced individuals seeking autonomy.

The third is transitioning to an executive role (or a partner position in practice).

This dual role involves leading an entire function or department while also being part of a senior leadership team where you need to let go of your specialist area and work as part of a collaborative unit to drive the whole organisation forward. These roles can sometimes conflict and require strategic thinking, influencing skills and a sound awareness of organisational politics.

While the learning-on-the-job approach remains effective for developing leadership skills, it relies on having good role models to learn from consistently, a challenge exacerbated by hybrid working. Leadership and management development programmes are effective and should be designed to address the behaviours that prevent skills from being fully utilised and offer plenty of opportunities for practice and feedback. For more senior individuals, one-to-one leadership coaching can be instrumental in pinpointing and eliminating sticking points in a person’s leadership style,

revoke the previous Will, but the Court will impose a Mutual Wills Trust (‘the Trust’) over the assets that were affected by the agreement thus preventing any loss to the intended beneficiaries.

Do not be put off by the costs of securing your testamentary wishes, no matter what route you go down. Yes, Mutual Wills will be more expensive, but a drop in the ocean compared to any dispute involving your personal representatives to remedy your wishes and the agreement you have made with your partner in relation to the distribution of your assets. Specialist legal advice should be sought at an early stage to ensure your assets are protected and that those you intend to benefit rightly inherit.

Improving Environments for Inclusivity & Better Mental Health

The spaces we live and work in have a huge impact on our mindsets, motivation and mental health. In an effort to create positive change in communal spaces, family-run printer Benchmark Reprographics have been taking on some unusual projects.

They have given the interior of Croydon College a face lift, modernising some of

the plainer areas into more engaging, inspiring spaces for students to relax and work.

Using their state-of-the-art large format printing machine (or “Bessie” as she is affectionately named), the team have produced and installed several new elements, including a welcoming entranceway to the college featuring huge, colourful artworks made by students; braille wayfinding and notices for visually impaired students; and some popping new wall graphics for both the student “urban deli” and gaming suite.

Students at the college commented it looked “stunning”, whilst Jeff at Benchmark hopes this change inspires better wellbeing and even higher grades for next year!

D-Day hero celebrates 101st birthday

At Care For Veterans, we are a charity based in Worthing where we look after severely disabled ex-servicemen and women.

I would like to introduce you to one of our residents, Ron. Ron is our eldest resident and on the 24th of February, he celebrated his 101st birthday.

Ron was called up to serve in 1942, against the backdrop of a world at war. As part of the Royal Engineers Regiment, he began his military journey with basic training – a regime that instilled the fundamentals of military life, from the meticulous care of uniform to the discipline of drill. His deployment to Normandy came after

the D-Day landings, at a time when the war was still a fervent storm of activity. Ron and his unit were part of the followup forces, tasked with rescue operations in the wake of the initial assault. He painted a vivid picture of the relentless movement through the war-torn landscapes of Europe, from the beaches of Normandy to the beleaguered city of Antwerp.

I would like you to join me wishing Ron a very Happy and healthy Birthday as he moves into his 101st year.

Shooting for the moon: How design can improve economic development and social impact

Opportunity

Recent Royal Society of Arts research confirmed “the creative industries are an engine of growth, a driver of innovation and a catalyst for change”; annually contributing over 2 million jobs and £100 billion to the UK economy.

Challenges

From mobile phones to medicine, creatives transform our everyday lives, but their high social impacts are often overlooked; despite many innovators focusing on positive societal and environmental impact.

Case study

As a social value example, Katie Merrien ( CommuniKate Design Limited ) said: “My animation for Sussex Musculoskeletal Partnership Central explains important information (including what musculoskeletal (MSK) means, self-care advice, and how the service can help) in an accessible, innovative way. Co-creation with local residents ensured it answers

their questions and expectations, and proactive communication can support neurodivergent people and those with anxiety.”

The Project Lead reported: "As this was the first animation project I've worked on, I really appreciated Katie’s flexibility and suggestions to help us shape the video. Katie attended our [public] event, getting live feedback from the community (so important!), which really made it feel co-produced. Katie received our requests for tweaks and changes in such an approachable way. It's been a pleasure to work with her!"

Protecting creativity

Katie’s business sustainability relies on protecting her intellectual property (IP) trademark and design rights. Katie received law firm quotes up to £3,000 before contracting with Clive Bonny, a certified IP advisor, after meeting at the Business and Intellectual Property Centre. Clive’s fee of £290 included a free IP review and trademark search in addition to Katie’s trademark, motto

and design registrations.

Clive founded Strategic Management Partners in 1990, saying “Katie’s IP searches and registrations provide longterm protections against infringement and copycats. AI now threatens livelihoods across our small creative enterprises so affordable IP protection is vital.

With the aim to provide a fully independent and client-focused service designed to demystify digital and only recommend the most suitable solutions to drive sales and leads for clients.

Over the last 10 years, we have worked with clients from a wide range of sectors including a vineyard, construction, care and events companies plus tech, travel, finance, entertainment, and manufacturing firms and of course many e-commerce-focused retailers. We have deep experience from more than 20 years in the Internet industry, so can cover most sectors and help with both B2B and B2C campaigns.

Google Ads and SEO are core services and we can also assist with social media advertising, copywriting, analytics and training staff or executives on digital platforms.

Our expertise with Google Ads is tried and tested from working on large campaigns for Vodafone, Apple and Disney while at Google to helping companies now sell their goods or generate high quality leads from their PPC activity. We can help with search ads, Google shopping, display and YouTube video ads, as well as newer formats such as performance max. We can also support you with understanding your website visitors via GA4 and gain insights into your wider marketing performance.

We’d like to think that the advantage of working with a smaller business is the personal touch with all services delivered by experts and not handed over to more junior staff. Also without the costs of a larger ad agency, we can be comparatively cost effective while delivering best in class work built on proven, cutting edge strategy and tactics.

We love to talk to new businesses, so always happy to discuss your online marketing plans without obligation or conduct audits of current campaigns.

Creative Pod Gain The Drum Recommends for the Third Consecutive Year & Secure Webflow Expert Accreditation!

The multi-award-winning agency, Creative Pod, gained the prestigious The Drum Recommends for the third consecutive year, securing their status until January 2025. They are also thrilled to announce they gained their Webflow Expert accreditation (valid until December 2024).

The Drum Recommends is a global media platform that individuals and businesses can use to find top-rated agencies recommended by their clients, helping them make faster and better decisions.

Sarah Lyons, Marketing Director, said: “We work incredibly hard to gain The Drum Recommends accreditation, and I am particularly very proud of it. When individuals and businesses are looking to work with an agency, it can be difficult to find the right one, but Drum Recommends helps resolve

some of those initial pain points. Thank you to all the clients who went through the process of reviewing us, we are incredibly grateful to them!”

Creative Pod was also thrilled to take the top spot on the leadership board and was rated as the Top Agencies of the Month throughout February.

The Webflow Expert accreditation is designed for freelancers and agencies who want to demonstrate their skills and showcase that they are certified Webflow Partners. This recognition distinguishes an agency from its competitors, indicating that the web development team has undergone training and exams to attain this prestigious certification.

Gordon Dowling, Head of Creative, said: “We’re thrilled our web design and development expertise is recognised by Webflow. I’m super proud of the team for attaining Webflow Expert accreditation,

Beware of the incorrect data

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) recently reprimanded the Bank of Ireland for making mistakes on over 3,000 customer credit profiles,

essentially providing the wrong data to credit agencies such as Experian, Equifax etc.

Credit Agencies’ primary purpose is to provide this information to lenders, businesses, and other entities that need to assess the creditworthiness of clients before extending credit or offering financial services.

Because these agencies gather data from various sources, such as banks, credit card companies, and public records, they are reliant on the information they receive being correct. In the case of Bank of Ireland, there were over 3,000 clients where this wasn’t the case.

So, what should you do?

The problem is that most individuals or businesses who check their credit report look only at the ‘score’. That isn’t enough as the ‘score’ is largely irrelevant and not used by UK lenders when they

it pays testament to their remarkable efforts delivering outstanding, highperforming digital experiences for our clients.”

If you want to collaborate with an agency that prioritises accreditations and follows industry best practices, contact us at www.creativepod.uk.com

assess borrowing.

You need to check your payment history to ensure everything is correct, you also need to check the balances and limits of any facilities and ensure they are up to date. Finally, check the financial associations. These are people that have a direct influence on your finances, usually your spouse, partner etc.

Be aware that sometimes the information held is incorrect, it happens more than you think. Where it is wrong then report it back to the Credit Agency and it will get corrected.

Having incorrect information on your credit report can lead to issues raising finance personally, for your business, or even buying a mobile phone.

Check your report beyond the credit score, it takes two minutes and as this case proves, mistakes happen.

What motivates people to work?

January tips to help you achieve your 2024 business ambitions!

Do you like managing your team? You don’t have to feel guilty if the answer is no!

The Self-Determination Theory could be part of the answer for turning that no, into a yes!

Managing a team is frequently one of the biggest challenges business owners and senior managers highlight. Unless you are lucky enough to have a dedicated HR professional in your business, the responsibility for it falls to you! We wanted to share this model with you to help your 2024 go the way you want it to in your business – fuelled by a motivated and high performing team.

The Self-Determination Theory says individuals need to experience three things to want to grow and develop:

1. Autonomy: Control over behaviours and goals – your team have a degree

of license as to what they need to do at work, when and how.

2. Relatedness: The need for belonging - to feel part of a group or team is good for emotional well-being but also encourages performance for the benefit of and to support the wider team.

3. Competence: Mastery and skill acquisition - to have the necessary skills and knowledge to complete the role to the required standard, and hopefully have (or acquire) enough skill to become a master in it.

So, ask yourself a few questions:

• Do you have these three elements in place already?

• What proactive strategies could you deploy to create them?

• Do you have the confidence and knowledge to create these strategies?

• What support and tools might you need to help you with this?

A Guide to the UK’s Flexible Working Bill

April brings the introduction of the Flexible Working Bill. This isn't just a minor tweak in employment law; it's a transformative move that acknowledges the evolving needs of the modern workforce. A common misconception is that certain sectors can't adapt to this model, but flexible working is not a onesize-fits-all concept.

Debunking the Myths: Flexible Working IS for All

The resistance to flexible working often

stems from a lack of understanding. For employers, expanding their understanding of the various forms of flexible working can open doors in innovative ways to integrate flexibility into their business models.

Part-time Working: Employees work fewer hours, offering a balance that can be appealing to those with personal commitments.

4-day Work Week: Imagine a three-day weekend, that's the allure of the 4-day week. Employees work four days but still work full-time hours.

Term-time Working: Employees work during school terms, taking any leave during school holidays.

Annual Hours: Focusing on the total hours worked in a year rather than weekly. This approach offers flexibility to manage busy and quiet periods.

Remote Working: Allows employees to work from anywhere, leveraging technology to stay connected.

It is worth the time investment to get this right, because once you do, greater job satisfaction, higher staff retention rates, improved company culture, and better team working will all show up in your business’ end of year results!

www.growthcoach.co.uk

Hybrid Working: A blend of remote and office-based work - the best of both worlds.

9-day Fortnight: Employees work fulltime hours over nine days per fortnight, it can significantly boost work-life balance.

Job Sharing: In this setup, two (or more) people share the responsibilities and hours of a full-time job.

Compressed Hours: This arrangement involves working the usual hours over fewer days.

The key takeaway is that flexible working isn't just a buzzword; it's a viable, adaptable and beneficial approach that can fit into virtually any industry.

Beyond March 8th IWD: Supporting Gender Equality All Year

International Women’s Day (IWD) reflects on progress towards gender equality and calls for continued change. The United Nations 2024 theme is ‘Count Her In: Accelerating Gender Equality Through Economic Empowerment’. Despite progress, women face barriers to equal economic participation, and

the theme recognises the need for equal opportunities to learn, earn, and lead.

True equality isn't a zero-sum game Women with equal opportunities contribute more meaningfully to their communities, families, and the workforce. Feminism is not ‘against men’, it's about creating a level playing field where everyone can reach their full potential. This, in turn, leads to better outcomes for everyone.

• More Profitable - Gender-diverse teams outperform others by up to 25% in profits.

• UK Maternity Discrimination - Every year, 54,000 women lose their jobs due to maternity discrimination, while 390,000 working mothers experience discriminatory treatment.

• UK VC funding - From 2017 to 2023, UK venture capital funds owned by men received ten times more capital than women.

• Tech Talent - Women comprise only

22% of Europe's tech workforce. Code First Girls and NatWest estimated that gender parity in tech could add £2.6 billion to the UK economy.

What can you do all year round?

I've spent 30 years in tech leadership, often as the only woman in the room. Male allyship beyond a one-hour talk on IWD helped my journey.

• Listen: Chat with women to understand their unique experiences of inequality.

• Learn and Reflect: Reading, workshops, conferences, training or coaching.

• Practice Allyship (a verb): Speak against sexist jokes and stereotypes.

• Invest: Invest in women-owned businesses or drive gender diversity, equity and inclusion in your workplace.

• Advocate: Support equal pay, parental leave, and flexible work policies.

Cleankill strikes Gold again to start the year off on a high

Surrey-based Cleankill Pest Control has started 2024 with celebrations after being awarded the Gold Investors in People accreditation for the third time.

No other pest control company in England has retained the Gold accreditation three times and Cleankill joins an elite group of businesses in other sectors that have achieved the treble.

Paul Bates, Managing Director of Cleankill Pest Control, said: “This is a wonderful achievement for a small business and we are all absolutely thrilled. It is testament to everyone’s commitment to our organisation, our management practices and our dedication to continuous improvement.

Investors in People Gold sets us apart from our competitors and also helps us attract new staff - it’s worth all the effort that goes into preparing for the

assessment.”

Investors in People Practitioner Esther O’Halloran added: “Congratulations to everyone at Cleankill for retaining Gold. In my report I highlighted many positive things about the company, but especially the transparent values which are at the heart of Cleankill. Very importantly, management is transparent about what it expects from people and how they should behave and conduct themselves, not only with clients but with each other.

The way people treat each other and talk at work with each other is important for building the family culture and Cleankill should be really proud of this. Everyone is conscious of Cleankill’s values and they have helped create a culture where everyone is actively involved in making sure the values are upheld.”

Paul Bates went on to say: “We have been told that we have improved greatly and are very close to Platinum status. This is an incredible achievement when we have gone from 46 to 61 staff in 3 years - a 32% increase in staff numbers.”

Preservation, Progress & Sustainability

Does the Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings create the most Sustainable Office Space?

It has been widely reported that, following a prolonged period of working from home during the pandemic, many office workers now find that they are more creative and productive when in an office environment.

The sustainability of their workspace is another draw for office occupiers who value the positive outcomes that this brings for the well-being of their staff and the planet. It has now become a significant factor in the selection of office space, as the working environment is crucial in attracting new talent and keeping staff happy and motivated.

The most sustainable buildings are the ones that exist

An often-overlooked aspect of sustainable office space is 'adaptive reuse' – whereby an existing building is reused for a purpose other than that for

which it was originally built or designed. A new building requires land, energy and materials, making it carbon-hungry. Adapting an existing building, which reuses the historic layout, reduces the quantity of new materials and carbon produced in their delivery - a much less wasteful approach.

Places of Connection, Inspiration & Possibility

Adaptive reuse effectively recycles historic buildings, breathing new life and possibilities into them. Historic buildings offer alternative and more inspiring office environments, appealing to businesses and occupiers who place a premium on beauty, heritage and authenticity. They also offer a distinctive alternative to start-ups, creatives and cultural organisations.

As corporate, business and working structures and cultures change, offices are increasingly the locations where people interact and collaborate. The

pleased with the outcome, said, “Our partnership with Celnor will bring longterm, direct benefits to our customers. From investment in new technology and employee training, to support for innovation in anticipation of customer needs, it will provide a platform for our future success. I am particularly pleased that we will be able to offer greater career development and career progression opportunities to our talented team.”

Assurity Consulting remains a people-centric workplace compliance consultancy. The company culture and values will stay the same, and they will continue to work with all customer and suppliers as a trusted partner, with no impact on the services their customers receive.

For further information please contact Suzanne: suzanne.clarkson-lewis@ assurityconsulting.co.uk

advancement of technology has meant that the office has become more about meeting, team working and socialising and less about accessing the phone, computer, filing, and stationery, therefore a workplace that inspires has become an important recruitment tool.

Apprentices speak volumes. Showcasing not only their newfound skills but also their contribution to their employer’s success.

Tom Marchant, digital director at PMW hired a digital apprentice…

“It’s been an absolute pleasure watching Lois flourish. Everyone at PMW is extremely proud of her and we are delighted she has agreed to stay on at the business and continue working in the digital department in the role of Google Ads executive.

The decision to offer an apprenticeship programme has been hugely beneficial to our business. Before we took on Lois, we had been struggling to find qualified individuals to fill the role of digital executive, so we decided the best thing to do was to train our own! The digital marketing apprenticeship meant not only could we get government funding towards this, but it has also enabled us

to grow the department and successfully support our clients with the added benefit of gaining a great employee along the way.”

Collectively, with our many hundreds of employer partners we're elevating the standard of digital skills and creating exciting employment opportunities for talented young people across our area.

Together transforming Brighton and Sussex into a globally renowned hub for creativity, digital innovation, and technology - a thriving ecosystem that benefits all.

London Gatwick expands Asia connectivity with new routes across China, Singapore and Azerbaijan

Passengers and businesses across London and the South East will benefit from 18 new flights per week between London Gatwick and Asia this summer, with major carriers Singapore Airlines, Air China, China Southern and Azerbaijan Airlines recently announcing new routes.

From 1 June, flag-carrier Air China will begin operating daily flights from London Gatwick to Beijing Capital Airport on A330-300 aircraft, before China Southern launches its three-per-week service to Guangzhou on 20 June, on Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Renowned carrier Singapore Airlines - recently crowned World’s Best Airline at the 2023 Skytrax awards - will begin flying five times per week to Singapore Changi Airport from 22 June.

Passengers can already take advantage of three flights per week to Baku, with Azerbaijan Airlines having launched its new service from London Gatwick last month.

The four new routes mean from this summer, Gatwick will connect passengers with 85 flights per week to Asia, with other existing services including Dubai (Emirates); Zhengzhou (China Southern); Shanghai (China Eastern and Air China); Doha (Qatar Airways); Jeddah (Saudia); and Goa, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Amritsar (Air India).

The additional routes will support not only passenger journeys but also regional and national trade opportunities. In 2023, the UK exported £37.5bn of goods and services to China - an 11.9% increase on 2022 - and £14.8bn to Singapore, a 10.7% increase on the previous year.

The flights will also provide an economic boost to the tourism industry across London and the South East, with Chinese visitors spending £1,937 per UK visit and £1.71

billion in total in 2019, according to Visit Britain

Stephanie Wear, VP Aviation Development, London Gatwick said: “These new services are fantastic news for both passengers and businesses across London and the South East, providing greater opportunities for tourism and trade.

“The new routes will provide huge connectivity potential, not only to the fantastic destinations of Singapore, Baku and across China, but more widely across Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. With significant increases in trade between the UK and Singapore, China and Azerbaijan in recent years, the services also provide exciting opportunities for local and regional businesses.”

Northern Runway planning process continues London Gatwick’s Northern Runway project has now moved into the examination phase.

Last summer, the airport submitted plans to bring its existing Northern Runway into routine use alongside the Main Runway.

This forward-looking and low impact plan aims to use the airport’s existing infrastructure to unlock new capacity and improve passenger experience by reducing delays, in line with government policy.

By investing in its long-term future, London Gatwick will also enhance the crucial economic role the airport plays, by creating around 14,000 new jobs and injecting £1 billion into the region’s economy every year.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI)

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping the business landscape, creating a wave of exciting opportunities for entrepreneurs and established companies alike.

Key areas where AI is unlocking doors include hyper-personalisation. For this, AI analyses vast amounts of customer data to predict individual needs and preferences, enabling businesses

to deliver personalised experiences through targeted marketing, product recommendations and dynamic pricing. Imagine a clothing store suggesting outfits based on your past purchases and current trends or a travel company crafting personalised itineraries based on your interests.

Automation and efficiency is another key area. It is where AI automates repetitive tasks, freeing up human resources for strategic work. Chatbots answer customer queries, robots handle manufacturing processes, and AI-powered scheduling tools optimise logistics and delivery. This leads to increased productivity, reduced costs, and improved operational efficiency.

Think about data-driven decisions with AI analysing vast datasets, unearthing hidden patterns and trends that humans might miss. This empowers businesses to make informed decisions about everything from product development and marketing campaigns to risk management and financial investments.

Imagine predicting customer churn before it happens.

In innovation and creativity, AI tools are assisting in design, content creation and scientific research, pushing the boundaries of human imagination. It can generate unique design concepts, write engaging marketing copy and even discover new materials and drug compounds. This opens doors to entirely new products, services and solutions.

Implementing AI successfully requires careful planning, ethical considerations and human oversight. However, those who embrace AI's potential will be wellpositioned to thrive in the ever-evolving business landscape.

Gerry Lawrence, of Freeman Clarke, believes we are only at the beginning of AI’s true capabilities. Keynote speaker at Brighton & Hove Business Show on June 13, he will talk about ‘AI: Apocalypse or Opportunity’.

CBAM

– A

New Reporting Requirement For Importers And Exporters

A new Carbon Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is impacting all exporters as well

as importers of products such as steel, aluminium, fertiliser, concrete, hydrogen and electricity from the EU.

The CBAM is part of the concept of carbon pricing and is mandated by the EU. As of 1 October 2023, all importers from the EU regardless of their size must make quarterly declarations tracking imports of relevant products. The requirement will affect any UK companies with a supply chain connected to the EU.

Declarations will need to include product data, customer data and carbon emissions data tracked across each importer’s supply chain. Although the intention of the CBAM is to encourage businesses to reduce carbon emissions in their supply chains, compliance will be key initially.

From 2026 the requirement will be extended to include CBAM certificates, which will need to be purchased to offset the cost of embedded carbon

and other emissions. There will also be a mechanism for goods to be stopped at the EU border, and the introduction of penalties for non-compliance.

In practical terms, the additional regulation is likely to increase the prices of EU products affected by the CBAM, compared to imports from outside of the EU. The process of tracking and reporting the relevant information will also add an additional compliance burden for EU importers. Obtaining the required data will require collaboration with suppliers, and it may be necessary to review contracts to ensure compliance with the new requirement.

Menzies is on hand to assist your business in reviewing the reporting requirements, keeping abreast of development and initiating discussions with stakeholders to ensure compliance. For further information visit: www. menzies.co.uk/eu-carbon-borderadjustment-mechanism-overview

I would like to bang their heads together

Have you ever felt like you wanted this to happen with two colleagues in the workplace, virtual or face to face?

Sometimes people who disagree at work don’t have the tools to manage the disagreement themselves or they might lack the self-awareness to see how they are contributing to the conflict. Behaviour can quickly degenerate to the sort of thing you see in a school playground such as refusing to speak

to each other, passive or active rudeness, rallying others to ‘their side’ of the conflict. These types of behaviour will all have a negative impact on productivity, as well as on the emotional wellbeing of the parties and anyone who gets caught in the crossfire. But this is how humans have evolved, this is our fight or flight mode in action and it happens so quickly we don’t see it coming.

There is a continuum of interventions for restoring damaged working relationships to productive, positive, future focused and respectful ones. From ‘having a quiet word’ with either or both, through facilitating conversation between them, to more structured mediation and coaching interventions.

Which you choose will depend on the specific features of the dispute, from its seriousness and duration, the relative balance of power and influence of the parties, their receptiveness to feedback and your budget.

Doing nothing is the worst option (well it is better than banging their heads together) – because the conflict will be having a negative impact on your business directly and indirectly.

Opening doors for your future leaders

I really feel for all the slack middle managers put up with in terms of how sandwiched they are between their teams and their bosses. For so long they have been identified as blockers, certainly in the ED&I context, claiming they haven’t got time, and their teams don’t either, to invest or participate in initiatives. Why is that? My personal view is that such an important cohort is often made up of people who are in those roles and have not been given the right tools and have just had

expectations placed on them in terms of what managing a team is all about. How much investment for training and development does your organisation set aside for them? Have you actively supported them by equipping them with the right skills to deal with the people aspect of managing, not just the figures and stats?

It is time to invest in your middle managers, as they are the future leaders of your organisations, as well as having the leverage of being the bridges

between top level leadership and the front line. Give them the skills to lead effectively, honestly and transparently, to appreciate and understand their teams, to lead with empathy and authenticity. I highlight the importance of these so called ‘soft skills’ as, my dear friends, these are the skills of the future, make no mistake.

Cultural Nexus creates leadership programmes, tailor-made to individual organisations and pertinent to their industry, ensuring they are creating and forging the great leaders of tomorrow; leaders who understand the value of diversity and who cultivate diverse teams. They will do so because you will have empowered them to know and believe that, that is where the future resilience of your organisation lies… in its people, i.e. your greatest asset.

New report finds two thirds of SMES have no marketing plan and are “Marketing in the Dark”

After a long period of economic stagnation, a new study of almost 2,000 decision-makers has found that more than half of SMEs don’t have a business plan.

The Marketing Maturity Report , by The Marketing Centre, asked people from hundreds of small and medium-

sized businesses across the UK to mark themselves against 60 statements, to understand what companies are doing to grow their business.

The majority said that their business currently has no way of establishing how marketing will actually contribute to achieving their business goals, with only a third saying that they have a marketing plan which produces regular, timely marketing activities.

Less than one in three (28%) said that they generate enough leads to achieve their business growth objectives, and only 40% have a CRM system in place which is used effectively across both the sales and marketing teams.

On top of this, only 27% said that they set clear objectives when using specialist marketing services too, such as agencies, in a sign that SMEs don’t know if their marketing is working.

Pete Jakob, marketing director at The Marketing Centre, said:

“The saying is true - if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. With more than half of companies in the UK not having a business or marketing plan, there are significant risks, and it’s crucial for business owners to realise that a documented business plan leads the way for marketing success to align with your vision.

“A strategy gives senior leaders the confidence that budgets will be channelled into the right areas, and activity will be measured and optimised to drive brand awareness, positive sentiment and ultimately sales. A strategy helps to steer the ship, and with that comes focus on reporting, CRM systems, tools and lead generation.”

Gatwick Greenspace Partnership works with gdb members to create a wilder community

Sussex Wildlife Trust is a partner in The Gatwick Greenspace Partnership, a community project that works to benefit people, wildlife and the countryside between Horsham, Crawley, Horley, Reigate and Dorking.

The Gatwick Greenspace team work with local communities to educate, increase biodiversity, and inspire an appreciation of the natural world, whilst working with our partners across the project area. These partners include gdb members London Gatwick, Surrey County Council, Crawley Borough Council, and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council.

We are delighted to work with London Gatwick to help them achieve The Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark Award. This achievement is supported by the Airport team, corporate volunteers from within the project area, and by a small team of dedicated volunteers. This is an amazing accomplishment

with London Gatwick being one of only 52 sites across the UK awarded the Biodiversity Benchmark. It’s fantastic to see the business recognise the importance of protecting biodiversity and dedicating its non-operational land to wildlife conservation and community benefit.

The project team also work with a number of schools to train and support Forest School leaders. We also run exciting, seasonally relevant sessions that inspire young people of all ages. These sessions provide opportunities for young people to engage with their local environment. This is so important, and you never know, there may be the next Attenborough out there being inspired. The team are also pleased to have worked with ESOL (English as a Second Language) students from gdb member Crawley College.

As the project celebrates its 30th year of working with the local community

Adapting to the new recruitment landscape

The Department for Education released their Skills Horizon report for 2024 earlier this month and within the report it draws attention to one topic in particular that caught our attention…

This is that SMEs are anticipating an increase in new hiring routes and a growing need to upskill current talent. With the South East of England having just over 850,000 SMEs, there is a huge opportunity for employers to utilise government funded apprenticeships to both upskill current employees and train up your new recruits at the same time.

In fact, according to Pricewater houseCoopers (PwC) in their 23rd Annual Global CEO Survey, 93% of CEO’s that introduced an upskilling program within their company saw an uptick in both talent retention and workforce resilience. The LinkedIn 2022 Workplace Learning Report further supports this, where it is cited that 94% of employees said they will stay at a company for longer if they receive an investment in their career development.

Apprenticeships provide one of the

best ways to upskill and train new staff; their learning is based at the workplace and allows them to embed themselves into the business and the company culture. As an employer you help to shape the programme with your provider to ensure your apprentices achieve with the skills you need to help your business thrive. We at Rewards employ 6 apprentices currently and many of our core staff are apprentice achievers helping to us grow as a business, whilst supporting the development of others.

The power of utilities connections and siteworks services

Control Energy Costs successfully merged with Energy Connection Services (ECS) in April 2023 to enhance service delivery and broaden its offerings.

Having collaborated closely for over a decade, the merger was a natural progression, allowing both companies to combine their strengths and expertise. The unified entity operates under the Control Energy Costs brand, focusing on providing a more streamlined service to clients, with a particular emphasis on utilities connections and siteworks.

Utilities connections

One of the primary outcomes of the merger with ECS is Control Energy Costs' newfound expertise in managing business utility connections and metering for industrial, commercial and SME clients. Through end-to-end project management, Control Energy Costs offers a wide range of services, including new connections, reconnections, disconnections and supply removals.

The scope of their services extends further to the design, installation, and maintenance of Building Network Operator (BNO) networks, Current Transformer (CT) meters, submetering and smart and Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters. The goal is to provide efficient and cost-effective solutions, assessing their clients’ current and future needs and eliminating redundant, costly services.

Seamless premises transition

Control Energy Costs recognises the importance of a seamless transition when it comes to moving into or out

of premises. Whether it’s a Change of Tenancy or a Change of Occupancy, they ensure a fully managed service for businesses. By expediting the transition process, Control Energy Costs minimises disruptions and facilitates a smooth handover between tenants and utility providers. They recommend early assessments for meter upgrades or new services, helping clients avoid delays and ensure a hasslefree transition.

Siteworks services

Control Energy Costs also brings its expertise to siteworks services, covering new sites, property development, temporary builders' supplies, upgrades and new infrastructure. They assist clients in evaluating both existing services on a site and the need for new services, ensuring that immediate and future utility requirements are met. For new property developments, Control Energy Costs conducts comprehensive feasibility studies and oversees siteworks operations, from quoting to completion.

Large national supermarket siteworks case study

Control Energy Costs' Project Management Team worked with a large national supermarket to initially arrange a new HV power supply for a single-use site. However, the commercial plans shifted, and the site was intended for multiple tenants.

Control Energy Costs proposed a ground breaking BNO solution, which avoided the removal of the HV substation, a first in the area under G87 regulations. To ensure success, Control Energy Costs delivered project management services and consultancy to the DNO, assisting in developing a policy framework.

In addition, Control Energy Costs proactively communicated with the supermarket's tenants, informing them of the electricity reconfiguration progress. Despite challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions, the project was completed on time and well below the original budget. This approach benefited the client, the DNO, and the supermarket's tenants, emphasising Control Energy Costs' commitment to delivering tailored solutions and actively shaping industry policies.

The Countdown Begins: Upgrade to Windows 11 Before It's Too Late

As Windows 10 heads towards its 2025 expiry, the arrival of Windows 11 heralds a pivotal shift for businesses. Its design, centring the Start menu and taskbar, is not just about aesthetics; it's about ushering in an era of streamlined efficiency. Snap Assist stands out, especially for those juggling multiple monitors, turning a potential mess into a model of productivity. With HDR support, visuals pop, while Focus options promise an oasis of concentration in a desert of distractions.

Yet, in the digital realm where threats lurk in the shadows, Windows 11's bolstered security measures are its crown jewels. This isn't just about keeping up with the times; it's about building a fortress around your business's most valuable asset: data. And with the tantalising potential to run Android apps, Windows 11 is poised to blur the lines between mobile and

desktop computing like never before.

In 2025, the cessation of updates for Windows 10 won't just be a technical footnote; it'll be a critical vulnerability. No new patches mean open doors for cyber threats, a risk no business can afford to take. This stark reality underscores the urgency of migrating to Windows 11, making it not just an upgrade but a necessity for safeguarding your enterprise against the ever-evolving

Employment law changes – What do you need to know?

Can you believe… the weeks of 2024 are flying by already! Employers… do you feel you are ahead of the curve with your employees? Check out a couple of updates to be aware of for the year ahead:

Paternity leave

• Instead of leave being taken as one block of one or two weeks consecutively, leave can now be split into two blocks of one week.

• Currently leave has to be taken during the first 8 weeks after a child is born or adopted, leave can now be taken in the first 52 weeks after a child is born or adopted.

• Employees need to give notice 15 weeks prior to the expected week of childbirth, and then 4 weeks’ notice of dates prior to each period of leave.

• Although these changes are effective from 8 March, it applies to babies whose expected week of birth or adoption date is after 6 April.

Carer’s leave

From 6 April 2024, employees will be entitled to a “week’s” unpaid leave every 12 months to care for a “dependent” who has:

• A physical or mental illness or injury that means they’re expected to need care for more than 3 months

• A disability (as defined in the Equality Act 2010)

• Care needs because of their old age The dependant doesn’t have to be a family member. They can be anyone who relies on them for care. This is a day one right and employees will not need to provide evidence or explain how the leave will be used.

These changes will enable parents and carer’s to better balance their work and home responsibilities, supporting them to remain in employment.

There are also some sizeable changes to flexible working coming into force in April – do get in touch for the latest.

Free Legal Advice for Employees and Employers on Pregnancy and Maternity Rights At Work

Martin Searle Solicitors Launch their Annual Pregnancy and Maternity Discrimination Campaign ‘Mind the Bump March 2024’.

In March 2024, Martin Searle Solicitors launch their twentieth annual Mind the Bump campaign to stamp out pregnancy and maternity discrimination at work.

A 2023 survey by the campaign group Pregnant Then Screwed found that over

half of all mothers have faced some form of discrimination when pregnant, on maternity leave, or on their return to work.

Martin Searle Solicitors will be offering a free 30-minute telephone advice service every Tuesday and Thursday, throughout March 2024, for employers and employees concerned about workplace rights of pregnant women and women on maternity leave.

Fiona Martin, Director and Head of Employment Law, says: “Pregnancy and maternity discrimination in the workplace continues to be a growing issue”. Our Employment Law team advises employers who have inadvertently treated pregnant women or women on maternity leave unfavourably and employees who had been unfairly dismissed because of their pregnancy or have been unfairly selected for redundancy as they return to work from maternity leave.

Martin Searle Solicitors have a series of factsheets, case studies and

FAQs for employers and employees covering pregnancy and maternity rights, returning to work after maternity, and avoiding pregnancy and maternity discrimination in redundancy processes. For details visit www.ms-solicitors.co.uk.

Martin Searle Solicitors will be running a virtual seminar for employers in the charity and non-profit sector on ‘Pregnancy and Maternity Discrimination – Best Practice for Employers’ on Thursday 14 March 2024 10.30am12pm, in association with Community Works. To book, see here
