Japanische Wohngegenden sind aufgrund einer Brandschutzregelung oftmals von dicht gebauten, aber freistehenden Häusern geprägt. Die Intention der Architekten war es hier, eine schmale Lücke in der Bebauung optimal zu nutzen, ohne die Nachbarn einzuschränken. Auf lediglich 50 m2 Grundstücksfläche drängt sich dieses Haus an ein bestehendes Gebäude und wirkt so, als hätte es schon immer dazugehört. Es blieb sogar Platz für einen Parkplatz auf dem Grundstück. Eine filigrane Wendeltreppe verbindet die momentan nur zwei Geschosse mit der Dachterrasse. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, eine zweite Etage in den Luftraum einzuziehen und so die Wohnfläche von zur Zeit etwa 56 m2 zu erweitern. Aufgrund der offenen Bauweise im Inneren ist eine Klimaanlage verzichtbar, denn die warme Luft kann durch das gesamte Gebäude wie in einem Kamin nach oben strömen und über den Dachaustritt auf die Terrasse entweichen.
Due to strict fire regulations, Japanese residential areas are often characterised by densely composed yet freestanding houses. Here, the architects aimed for optimal utilisation of a narrow gap in an otherwise built-up frontage. Situated on an infill plot of only 50 m2, this house stands intimately close to an older building, as though it has always been there. There is even space for a parking area on the site. A delicate spiral staircase connects the upper storeys with the roof terrace. Stair landings are superfluous since the levels can be accessed directly from the steps of the stairs. There is an option to add another storey into the void space and thereby extend the current dwelling area of approximately 56 m2. Air conditioning is not required due to the open and well ventilated room arrangement: as in a chimney, warm air can rise through the building and escape to the terrace via the roof exit.
