Season,

We are just coming to the end of what has proved to be another, occasionally challenging but hugely rewarding year of theatre in which we’ve been thrilled by the positive feedback. Once again, we have been heartened by the loyal support that we have received, which for us as a charity is so important. Thank you all so much!

Nothing beats the thrill of live entertainment, and we’re excited to have put together a season packed with main stage shows including a brilliant contemporary drama, a deliciously funny comedy, a hugely gripping thriller, probably the biggest musical we’ve ever staged, a classic ghost story in the run up to Christmas and our incredibly popular pantomime. We’ve also planned an all-female themed series of productions across the year in our Studio Theatre. Together with a hugely entertaining selection of one-nighters including comedy, concerts, contemporary dance and visiting theatre, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

In a special place like Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, we know that we are simply the current custodians who are building upon decades of history, and thousands of special treasured memories shared amongst everyone who has experienced the magic of this theatre. The Garrick continues to play an integral part in Altrincham life, powered by the love and loyalty of generations of both audiences and supporters. Whilst we both acknowledge and pay tribute to the commitment and dedication of those who have come before us, we are also aware of the need to look to the future by forging new business associations and expanding our pool of onstage and behind-the-scenes talent. Simultaneously, if we are to continue succeeding with our commitment to provide both a vibrant Theatre for the Community as well as a Performing Arts Centre of Excellence, encouraging new audiences and supporters to become involved is essential. Any theatrical organisation - indeed, any business or company - is only as good as the people it involves. Naturally, we’d love you to ‘get involved’ and join us, as either an active volunteer or as a ‘Friend of the Garrick’. We guarantee that you won’t regret it!

If you’ve been a regular theatregoer at the Garrick before, thank you, and we look forward to welcoming you back! If you’ve never previously visited this sparkling jewel in Altrincham’s cultural crown, we believe that you’ll be very pleasantly surprised by what you see - and will want to come back again!

Based on the novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King

The Shawshank Redemption examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum-security facility.

Despite protests of his innocence, Andy Dufresne is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murder of his wife and her lover. Incarcerated at the notorious Shawshank facility, he quickly learns that no one can survive alone.

Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things take a slight turn for the better. However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience and exploit his talents for accountancy, a desperate plan is quietly hatched…

The Shawshank Redemption was adapted for the stage by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns. The production debuted in Dublin in 2009.

The 1994 feature film "THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION'' starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and is regularly voted as Britain’s favourite ever movie. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Now, experience this remarkable and unforgettable story live on stage!

“Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things… and no good thing ever dies”.

Nostalgia simply ain’t what it used to be...!

The Olivier-Award -winning comedy

HOME, I’M DARLING

Every marriage needs a little fantasy to keep it sparkling. But behind the gingham curtains, being a domestic goddess isn't as easy as it looks...

When Judy sets out to become the perfect 1950s housewife, the Martins are living the dream. Johnny has a beautiful wife, a beautiful home, and a promotion on the horizon. Judy is revelling in the joys of domesticity; making cakes, cocktails, and homemade marmalade. But cracks are starting to appear in this beautiful façade which threatens their domestic bliss.

Home, I’m Darling was first staged at The National Theatre in 2018, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and was nominated for the UK Theatre’s Best New Play.

Laura Wade’s clever play doesn’t so much sing the praises of the good old days as show us that “nostalgia simply ain’t what it used to be”.

Saturday 1 July

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Following a box-office record-breaking run in cinemas in 2019, the one-woman show returns to cinemas to the big screen this summer.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

Chantry Dance presents a matter of time - a mesmerising triple bill exploring our relationship with time created by award-winning producers and choreographers Rae Piper and Paul Chantry in collaboration with innovative director-choreographer Kristian Cunningham.

GHOST DANCES is danced to Nicholas Maw's 1988 suite. A woman journeys through the past, present and future where the allusive 'ghosts' of the title are her fractured dreams and memories. She learns to reconcile the uncertainty of the future with lessons of the past to fully appreciate the present.

ARIADNE’S LAMENT is set to Roman poet Catullus' carmen 64. Ariadne laments Theseus abandoning her and faces a desolate future. The work considers how certain human situations remain relevant no matter when they occur.

IN TIME OF DAFFODILS is danced to Chanticleer's musical setting of ee cummings' poem. This evocative piece is a reminder of the simple things in life - the goal of living is to grow.

An uplifting, honest show navigating Motherhood and the drama life throws at you, because creating life and raising a good human Isn’t enough without the occasional bump along the way.

If you’re a mum-to-be, about to have your first grandchild or even the cat’s mother in need of a witty romp through the trials and tribulations of parental life, then this is the show for you.

If you like theatre... no, if you love theatre, drama, comedy, musical theatre, play reading, poetry and much more and would relish the opportunity to meet new people, then the new 'Altrincham Garrick Play Reading Club' is for you.

Here is an opportunity for you to have fun whether you are an enthusiast, a participant or something else altogether.

No matter if you have never read a play before, if you studied a play or two in school or are a die-hard enthusiast, all are welcome to join us as we read our way through an extensive list of plays and musicals new and old.

Play readings take place once a month in the Garrick Bar.

The event is all about relaxed, no pressure reading, so don't worry about not reading things correctly or in a certain way. We're all working through it together.

Whilst some of us have taken part in plays, we're not about deep intellectual debate either. We may discuss a play but no one is ever expected to have previous knowledge of a play.

The best way to read a play is to do it out loud, so join us and give it a try?

Our reasonably priced bar and coffee bar will be open too. So if you would like to see what we have to offer before committing, then you are most welcome to have a drink with us and soak up the atmosphere.

The first session is free and thereafter it will be a minimum of £5 per person, or as much as you wish and are able to donate to support your local Theatre.

Spanning three decades in the entertainment business and told in reverse order, Merrily We Roll Along charts the turbulent relationship between composer Franklin Shepard and his two lifelong friends — writer Mary and lyricist & playwright Charley.

An inventive, cult-classic ahead of its time, Merrily We Roll Along features some of Stephen Sondheim’s most celebrated, personal and beautiful songs including “Good Thing Going”, “Not A Day Goes By” and “Our Time”.

This unmissable Musical Comedy is a spirited and cautionary tale for anyone who has ever pursued a dream.

Originally opening on Broadway in 1981, and having countless revivals and and revisions along the way, Merrily We Roll Along found great success in 2013 when London’s Menier Chocolate Factory produced the production, which subsequently transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre to critical acclaim - the most five-star reviews in West End history - and winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical. It has most recently returned to Broadway, starring Daniel Radcliffe.
