Hello!

A brilliantly colourful welcome to our September 2022 – January 2023 Season At the time of writing (June 2022), we’re just coming to the end of what has proved to be a long, occasionally challenging, hugely rewarding year of theatre in which we’ve been thrilled by the overall positive feedback to the season, and heartened by the loyal support that we have received. Thankyou all so much!

Following the resumption of ‘normal life’ after the pandemic, many theatres have struggled to re-connect with their audiences, and this hasn’t been helped by the recent (and ongoing) steep rises in the costs of living. We are constantly aware of trying to find the right balance, both in terms of keeping ticket prices at an affordable level as well as deciding upon what we select for our stages. Inside this brochure, you’ll see that we’ve planned some truly fabulous productions for the first half of our 2022-23 Season – and on pages 22 and 23, there’s even a sneak preview of what’s coming up later in 2023 – and once again we’ve tried to find ‘something for everyone’, with both contemporary and classic dramas, comedies, musicals, shows for all the family (including our hugely popular panto), and an LGBTQ+ themed series of productions across the coming year in our Studio Theatre. We would encourage you to book early for all of our productions - tickets are on sale for them all now - and you could even save money by becoming one of the Friends of the Garrick, which would guarantee you discounted prices.

It’s interesting to note that, over the course of the last year, 140 different people will have appeared onstage in Altrincham Garrick Playhouse productions, with many of them having made their debuts with our company. I’m proud that we are an organisation that is able to give opportunities to many talented people of all ages and backgrounds. The recent establishment of the Garrick Ensemble, for performers under the age of 30, which both complements the Garrick Academy of Performing Arts (GAPA) and provides the next step for graduates from our hugely popular young people’s group has been a great success. Simultaneously, while there has almost inevitably been a large turnover of performing talent within the company, it has been great to welcome back a host of familiar faces and ‘Garrick stalwarts’ alongside the new recruits. Any theatrical organisation - indeed, any business or company - is only as good as the people it involves. Naturally, we’d love you to ‘get involved’ and join us, as either a fully-fledged member or as a ‘Friend of the Garrick’. We guarantee that you won’t regret it!

If you’ve been a regular theatregoer at the Garrick before, thankyou, and we look forward to welcoming you back! Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache this multi layered masterpiece examines the joy, pain and emotional cost of creativity.

Actors are rehearsing a play called “Caliban's Day” at the National Theatre about Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera “Death in Venice”, who is seeking advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting in 1972, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

Alan Bennett's play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion's spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

A moving, comical and eye-opening story of four young women fighting for education and selfdetermination against the larger backdrop of women's suffrage.

1896. Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade. Yet, when the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a 'blue stocking' - an unnatural, educated woman. They are denied degrees and go home unqualified and unmarriageable.

In Jessica Swale's play, Tess Moffat and her fellow first years are determined to win the right to graduate. But little do they anticipate the hurdles in their way: the distractions of love, the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition, who will do anything to stop them. The play follows them over one tumultuous academic year, in their fight to change the future of education.

A young soldier returning from the trenches of the First World War recollects a love that dare not speak its name. Almost 100 years later, a groom-to-be prepares for his gay wedding.

Poignant and funny, tragic and riotous, these monologues cover major events in 20th century gay life – From the danger of imprisonment to the Wolfenden Report of 1957. The Garrick

ACADEMY of Performing Arts

The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts (GAPA) is a theatre company looking to welcome any young person, aged from 5 to 18, who is interested in any aspect of the theatre, or performing arts (on or off stage), and who wants to take part in a FUN activity.

A rollicking new comedy by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris (Twelfth Night).

After an aerial dog fight, Pilot Officer Jack Absolute flies home to win the heart of his old flame, Lydia Languish. Back on British soil, Jack’s advances soon turn to anarchy when the young heiress demands to be loved on her own, very particular, terms.

Emily Burns directs this spectacularly entertaining new version of Sheridan’s The Rivals. Featuring a cast including Caroline Quentin, Laurie Davidson, Natalie Simpson and Kelvin Fletcher.

Our main aims are that all of our students are fully engaged with our active classes and, most of all, enjoy themselves.

It’s Great! It’s Active!

Every Saturday we run a range of sessions for students aged from 5 to 18 and, through a series of workshops, exercises and rehearsals we introduce our pupils to a range of stage skills that will enable them to take part in, and contribute to our main productions. There are lots of opportunities for students to perform on stage at the Garrick Playhouse too. They will also allow each student to learn, develop, gain confidence, and select the disciplines they wish to focus on.

It’s Positive! It’s Amazing!

Our emphasis is primarily on enjoying ourselves, but we are also prepared to put in the hard work it takes to achieve great performances. It’s also great to see our students gain confidence through the classes we run, and from the skills they learn, and then watch them take them into their future lives.

Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) and John Heffernan (Dracula) lead the cast in Shakespeare’s romcom of sun, sea and mistaken identity.

The legendary family-run Hotel Messina on the Italian Riveria has been visited by artists, celebrities and royalty. But when the owner’s daughter weds a dashing young soldier, not all guests are in the mood for love.

A string of scandalous deceptions soon surround not only the young couple, but also the adamantly single Beatrice and Benedick.

An evening and a little bit of the morning with

MARK STEEL

There is so much to yell about. There’s the modern world in which you spend so long trying to work out iTunes, that it’s easier to form a band and learn the songs.

But there’s also so much to be delighted with. Like the fact that everyone in Northampton knows the sign that says ‘Family Planning Advice – Use Rear Entrance’.

Then there’s the crazy story of being brought up in a working-class street in Kent, to discover my natural father was a millionaire backgammon player who was best mates with Lord Lucan.

I’ve come to terms with the fact I’m a heap of contradictions, trying to stay young while being unable to log into any website. Trying to be respectable and mainstream (in this show there will even be a piano and a bit of singing), until I can’t help breaking into a steaming rant that would get me locked away somewhere secure if it wasn’t on a stage.

And this is stand-up, so whatever has happened in the room, in the town or in the world that day will almost certainly be in the show.

So, I’ll try to keep it to a decent length, but it could so easily end up as an evening and part of the next day.

The critically acclaimed Mark Steel’s in Town was voted the 6th best radio comedy ever and Mark is a regular on the BBC’s Have I Got News For You, QI and BBCR4’s News Quiz. He has been named newspaper columnist of the year and is author of the award-winning audiobook Who Do I Think I Am.

The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is one of the premier entertainment facilities in the South Manchester area.

Wherever you may be seated in our comfortable 401-seat Main auditorium, you are guaranteed both excellent leg room and an unhindered view of the stage.

The Bar is open from 6.45pm until 11:00pm on performance nights, and between 8:30pm and 11:00pm on nonshow weeks.

If you like theatre... no, if you love theatre, drama, comedy, musical theatre, play reading, poetry and much more and would relish the opportunity to meet new people, then the new 'Altrincham Garrick Play Reading Club' is for you.

Here is an opportunity for you to have fun whether you are an enthusiast, a participant or something else altogether.

No matter if you have never read a play before, if you studied a play or two in school or are a die-hard enthusiast, all are welcome to join us as we read our way through an extensive list of plays and musicals new and old.

Readings will take place once a month in the Garrick Bar. The event is all about relaxed, no pressure reading, so don't worry about not reading things correctly or in a certain way. We're all working through it together.

Whilst some of us have taken part in plays, we're not about deep intellectual debate either. We may discuss a play but no one is ever expected to have previous knowledge of a play.

The best way to read a play is to do it out loud, so join us and give it a try?

Our reasonably priced bar and coffee bar will be open too. So if you would like to see what we have to offer before committing, then you are most welcome to have a drink with us and soak up the atmosphere.

The first session is free and thereafter it will be a minimum of £3 per person, or as much as you wish and are able to donate to support your local Theatre.
