theatre to set your heart on fire!

january - june 2023

Bachelor Jack Worthing and his best mate Algernon Moncrieff hope to marry society’s most eligible ladies, Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. But the lads’ courtship of the women is far from straight forward! With double identities, plenty of ‘Bunburying’ and a number of hostile encounters with the formidable Lady Bracknell, the pair become embroiled in a web of mistaken identities with hilarious consequences...

In a production set in the present day, Oscar Wilde’s brilliantly witty comedy is as deliciously funny, entertaining and relevant today as when it was first written.

Come and be part of a friendly and rewarding Theatre Company!

Nothing beats the excitement of live entertainment, and once again we’re thrilled to have put together a season packed full of drama, musicals, comedy, concerts and wonderfully enjoyable productions for all the family.

In a special place like Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, we know that we are simply the current custodians who are building upon decades of history, and thousands of special, treasured memories shared amongst everyone who has experienced the magic of this theatre. The Garrick continues to play an integral part in Altrincham life, powered by the love and loyalty of generations of both audiences and supporters. Whilst we both acknowledge and pay tribute to the commitment and dedication to the Playhouse of those who have come before us, we are also aware of the need to look to the future by forging new business associations, expanding our pool of onstage and behind-the-scenes talent, and encouraging new audiences and supporters to become involved with us if we are to continue succeeding with our commitment to being both a vibrant Theatre for the Community as well as a Performing Arts Centre of Excellence.

Fulfilling one of these aims, this season sees performances by both the Garrick Ensemble, our company of 18 – 30 year old aspiring actors from across the Greater Manchester and Cheshire area, who can be seen in the stage adaptation of the hugely entertaining movie Shakespeare In Love, and by GAPA - the Garrick Academy of Performing Arts, our Young People’s theatre company, who are staging Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin’s fabulous musical version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Between these two productions is the original stage play of The Father, Florian Zeller’s compelling, playful and ferociously honest study of dementia, and fans of quality drama are also served by an unmissable staging of Thornton Wilder’s 20th century classic of American theatre, Our Town. Prior to this, to coincide with the Easter holidays, we are putting on The Jungle Book, a wild and wonderful adventure for the whole family, while those who love classic thrillers should book now for Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution. Our season wraps with an unmissable staging of one of Stephen Sondheim’s most acclaimed works, the TONY and Olivier Award winning musical Into The Woods. Together with the season of LGBTQ+ themed plays in our Studio Theatre, Stand-Up Comedy nights from Manford’s Comedy Club, and a brilliant collection of Concerts for all ages, we really do have ‘something for everyone’!

If you’ve been a regular theatregoer at the Garrick Playhouse before, thankyou, and we look forward to welcoming you back! If you’ve never previously visited this sparkling jewel in Altrincham’s cultural crown, we believe that you’ll be very pleasantly surprised by what you see - and will want to come back again!

ALTRINCHAM GARRICK PLAYHOUSE WELCOME
A heart-warming welcome to our January - June 2023 Season, and once again we’ve come up with ‘something for everyone’ to enjoy!

Penniless and indebted to two demanding producers, struggling young playwright William Shakespeare is tormented by writer’s block until he meets the beautiful Viola de Lesseps, daughter of a wealthy merchant, whose fiery passion for poetry and drama leaves her secretly longing to be an actor. Both are despondent when they learn that Viola’s father has promised her to the stuffy Lord Wessex in order to gain a title for their family. Under the veil of secrecy, Will and Viola’s passionate love affair becomes the basis of the very play he is writing – Romeo and Juliet.

With opening night – and the wedding day – fast approaching, the plots race toward a parallel conclusion. Will it all work out in the end or are the two star-crossed lovers destined for tragedy?

The Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love starred Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush and Tom Wilkinson and won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay.

This romantic comedy transports audiences back to Shakespeare’s London in a production that is full of energy, colour, spectacle and love.

The Garrick Ensemble is a company of 18 – 30 year old aspiring actors from Greater Manchester and Cheshire who aim to make theatre that is fresh, innovative and exciting. See the very best of local, up and coming talent before they move forward in the next stages of their careers in the Arts.

The Father (Le Père) is a play about a man called Andre. Now 80 years old, Andre was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine.

Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pyjamas, and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control…

A sobering and realistic family story, and an unsentimental, emotionally intense look at the world through the eyes of a man experiencing dementia. This amateur

Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda JR. is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

ACADEMY

The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts (GAPA) is a theatre company looking to welcome any young person, aged from 5 to 18, who is interested in any aspect of the theatre, or performing arts (on or off stage), and who wants to take part in a FUN activity.

Every Saturday we run a range of sessions for students aged from 5 to 18 and, through a series of workshops, exercises and rehearsals, we introduce our pupils to a range of stage skills that will enable them to take part in, and contribute to, our main productions.

They will also allow each student to learn, develop, gain confidence, and select the disciplines they wish to focus on. There are also other opportunities for students to perform at the Garrick Playhouse, and work behind the scenes, too.

Our emphasis is primarily on enjoying ourselves, but we are also prepared to put in the hard work it takes to achieve great performances.

It’s also great to see our students gain confidence through the classes we run, and from the skills they learn, and then watch them take them into their future lives.

If students want to pursue a career in the Performing Arts our trained, qualified staff can provide them with a solid foundation that they can build on in their theatrical future; if students want to have fun and meet their friends, then GAPA is also the perfect place to come, too!

Rudyard Kipling

Saved from the jaws of Shere Khan the tiger, Mowgli must learn the Laws of the Jungle from Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther to survive. A brave little man cub grows into a confident and care-free young boy, but danger is never far away and Shere Khan is hungry for revenge. As Mowgli faces each peril and pitfall, he must decide whether he belongs in the world of men or with the animal kingdom.

Stuart Paterson reimagines Kipling's much-loved stories for a new generation in a vibrant, colourful family adventure that's full of surprises! A wild and wonderful adventure in the Jungle awaits for all the Family this Easter at Altrincham Garrick Playhouse.

Our Town

Love and marriage, birth and death. Seen from a distance they’re just the rhythm of everyday life: but when you’re caught up in the middle and they are happening to you, they are the whole world. As the sun rises on another ordinary day, the townsfolk of Grover's Corners go about their business: newspapers are delivered; people go to work; gardens are tended to. And a boy and girl fall in love. But as life's events unfold and a community comes together, one question remains: "Do any human beings ever realise life as they live it? Every, every minute?".

Into the Woods

In a modern world, a fairytale adventure is never far away… be careful what you wish for. A baker and his wife desperately yearn to have a child, but have been cursed by the Witch who lives next door, thanks to the actions of the baker’s father. The only way to lift the curse is to find four obscure yet strangely familiar items – a cow as white as milk, a slipper as pure as gold, a cape as red as blood and hair as yellow as corn. With only three nights to find them before the curse becomes irreversible, the couple head deep into the mysterious nearby woods, only to discover more about themselves than they might ever have expected... and that actions have consequences, and sacrifices must be paid.

One of Stephen Sondheim’s most acclaimed works, this Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical interweaves Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf, Cinderella, Rapunzel, two Princes (and two step-sisters), Jack, and - of course - a Witch into a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic!

Artistic Director Joseph Meighan brings a contemporary vision of Sondheim's enchanting and touching masterpiece.

Love! Valour! Compassion!

Winner of the 1995 Tony Award for Best Play, Love! Valour! Compassion! is a mammoth exploration into life, love and loss at the end of the millennium.

As hilarious as it is heart-breaking, Terrence McNally’s seminal work captures the zeitgeist of 1990s America and forces the question - when reality hits home, who and what is most important to us?

Beautifully written, Love! Valour! Compassion! gathers together eight gay men at the upstate New York summer house of a celebrated dancerchoreographer who fears he is losing his creativity… and possibly his lover. Infidelity, flirtations, soul-searching, AIDS, truthtelling, and skinny-dipping mix monumental questions about life and death.

To experience Love! Valour! Compassion! is to join in a dance of life.

The Laramie Project

When a small town comes face to face with murder, everyone has a story to tell...

Hailed as one of the most captivating and encompassing pieces of contemporary theatre, The Laramie Project shocks, challenges, and moves all who watch it as it reveals the lowest depths of hatred and greatest heights of compassion that lies within all human beings in any seemingly average community.

“I woke up. I showered. And then the mirror was there. Suddenly there. Only it had always been there, but I’d, somehow, I’d managed to never look. To never really look.”

A love story about transition, testosterone, and James Dean.

Josh and Isabella are childhood sweethearts. They were meant to spend their gap year together, they were meant to be together forever. But Isabella has now become a boy.

Pronoun is an honest, touching and relevant piece of contemporary drama, which is as thought-provoking as it is engaging.

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove

As the first mainstream lesbian piece of theatre, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove is a seminal work that explores a gay women’s haven, Bluefish Cove, where a group of seven lesbians are spending their annual holiday.

Eva wanders into the colony after leaving an unhappy marriage, accidentally finding herself among women that will change her life in more ways than she could ever envisage.

Set in the 1980s, this tender play follows these women as they experience love, loss, and everything in between: rooted in subtle and realistic portrayals of lesbian relationships, it invites us to consider love between women in whatever form that may take.

Get ready for another evening of slick, fast-moving, farcical fun and bawdy sexual innuendo (did we mention the innuendo?) for adults only.

Your Local Theatre

The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is one of the premier entertainment facilities in the South Manchester area. Wherever you may be seated in our comfortable 401-seat Main Auditorium, you are guaranteed both excellent leg room and an unhindered view of the stage.

The Playhouse has it’s own car park offering FREE PARKING to patrons. Inside the complex, we also have our own in-house facilities. A professional workshop, creating our own scenery, as well as lighting, sound, props and wardrobe departments, all of which wouldn’t be out of place if they were found in a top professional theatre.

In addition to our Main Stage, a 50-seat Studio Theatre allows for the staging of more intimate productions. In both venues, you are guaranteed a warm, friendly welcome from our incredibly dedicated teams of volunteers, who work in conjunction with the Box Office and Bar staff to enhance your visit.

The Garrick Playhouse is fortunate to be able to attract many of the most gifted local performers to appear in our own productions, as well as being able to draw on the best creative and directorial talent from the region. While our own in-house productions are classed as nonprofessional, everything about the theatre is set up and run with a completely professional outlook... which is absolutely right for one of the best live performance venues in the area.

If you like theatre... no, if you love theatre, drama, comedy, musical theatre, play reading, poetry and much more and would relish the opportunity to meet new people, then the new 'Altrincham Garrick Play Reading Club' is for you.

Here is an opportunity for you to have fun whether you are an enthusiast, a participant or something else altogether.

No matter if you have never read a play before, if you studied a play or two in school or are a die-hard enthusiast, all are welcome to join us as we read our way through an extensive list of plays and musicals new and old.

Play readings take place once a month in the Garrick Bar.

The event is all about relaxed, no pressure reading, so don't worry about not reading things correctly or in a certain way. We're all working through it together.

Whilst some of us have taken part in plays, we're not about deep intellectual debate either. We may discuss a play but no one is ever expected to have previous knowledge of a play.

The best way to read a play is to do it out loud, so join us and give it a try?

Our reasonably priced bar and coffee bar will be open too. So if you would like to see what we have to offer before committing, then you are most welcome to have a drink with us and soak up the atmosphere.

The first session is free and thereafter it will be a minimum of £5 per person, or as much as you wish and are able to donate to support your local Theatre.
