and welcome to our January to July 2024 Season Nothing beats the excitement of live entertainment, and once again we’re thrilled to have put together a season packed full of drama, musicals, comedy, concerts and wonderfully enjoyable productions for all the family.

We have just completed one of the most successful few months in the history of this theatre, with our stagings of The Shawshank Redemption, Home I’m Darling, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and A Christmas Carol - A Ghost Story. These productions all enjoyed both public and critical acclaim, and sold-out houses. At the time of writing over 95% of the seats for Sleeping Beauty, this year’s choice for our incredibly popular annual pantomime, have been sold. We have been both thrilled and hugely grateful for the support that we have received. A huge thank you to everyone who has bought a ticket and seen one (or more) of our productions, and especially to our incredibly hard- working staff and all of our volunteers. Without their incredible commitment and dedication, we would struggle to continue staging top-quality productions.

It would be easy for us to sit back and relax for a minute, but that’s not the way that we do things at the Garrick, and 2024 promises to be even bigger. Starting in January with a staging of Paula Hawkins’ compelling The Girl On The Train, one of the best thrillers written for years, this season also sees performances by both the Garrick Ensemble, our company of 18 – 30 year old aspiring actors from across the Greater Manchester and Cheshire area, who can be seen in the very dark, shockingly graphic, bloody and visceral staging of Let The Right One In – not for the faint-hearted – and by GAPA - the Garrick Academy of Performing Arts, our Young People’s theatre company, who are staging their own original version of the pantomime Cinderella, written by GAPA Principal Peter Birch. Between these two productions is the stage version of one of British comedy’s best TV series, The Vicar of Dibley. To coincide with the Easter holidays, we are producing Bryony Lavery’s superb adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure story Treasure Island, a hugely entertaining show for the whole family to enjoy. Other productions will include an unmissable staging of The Father, Florian Zeller’s compelling, playful and ferociously honest study of dementia. In addition we will be bringing you The Audience, a wonderfully funny and genuinely moving play by Peter Morgan, the author of both The Queen and Netflix’s smash hit series The Crown. Our season finishes with one of Stephen Sondheim’s most acclaimed (but rarely performed) musicals, Merrily We Roll Along.

The Altrincham Garrick is a registered charity run predominantly by volunteers. Eli is the young girl who has just moved in next door. She doesn't go to school and never leaves the flat by day. Sensing in each other a kindred spirit, the two become devoted friends.

What Oskar doesn't know is that Eli has been a teenager for a very long time…

A dark and visceral coming-of-age vampire love story, based on the acclaimed novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist and cult film.

Jack Thorne's adaptation of Let The Right One In premiered in June 2013 at the Dundee Rep Theatre in a production by the National Theatre of Scotland, before transferring to London's Royal Court Theatre in November 2013. It won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Theatre in 2014.

The Garrick Ensemble is a company of 18 – 30 year old aspiring actors from Greater Manchester and Cheshire who perform one production each year as part of the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse Main House Season. The Garrick Ensemble aims to make theatre that is fresh, innovative and exciting. Each student will learn, develop, gain confidence, and select the disciplines they wish to focus on. There are also other opportunities for students to perform at the Garrick Playhouse, and work behind the scenes.

If students want to pursue a career in the Performing Arts our trained, qualified staff can provide them with a solid foundation that they can build on in their theatrical future. If students want to have fun and meet their friends, then GAPA is also the perfect place to come, too!

Gathering a motley crew of sailors and pirates, Jim sets sail on the mighty Hispaniola bound for a lost island and untold fortunes. The ship’s charming cook, Long John Silver quickly befriends Jim but as the island draws near, danger lurks beneath the surface. Will Jim and her friends find the buried gold, or will the one-legged pirate be the death of them all?

This thrilling new adaptation by Bryony Lavery of Treasure Island premiered at the National Theatre, London, in December 2014. Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story of murder, money and mutiny is the perfect treat for all the Family! Oh… and feel free to bring your parrot along too!

Now approaching his 70s, Andre was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pyjamas, and he can’t find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control…

A sobering and realistic family story, and an unsentimental, emotionally intense look at the world through the eyes of a man experiencing dementia.

This amateur production of ‘The Father’ is presented by arrangement with Samuel French Limited.

The Father, in this English translation by Christopher Hampton, was commissioned by the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal, Bath and premiered in October 2014. The production transferred to the Tricycle Theatre, London, in May 2015, and subsequently to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End. The Father was awarded the Moliere Award for Best Play and the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor. In 2020 a film version called The Father was released starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Hopkins won the Academy Award for Best Actor.

If you like theatre... no, if you love theatre, drama, comedy, musical theatre, play reading, poetry and much more and would relish the opportunity to meet new people, then the 'Altrincham Garrick Play Reading Club' is for you.

Here is an opportunity for you to have fun whether you are an enthusiast, a participant or something else altogether.

No matter if you have never read a play before, if you studied a play or two in school or are a die-hard enthusiast, all are welcome to join us as we read our way through an extensive list of plays and musicals new and old.

Play readings take place once a month in the Garrick Bar.

Altrincham Garrick Show Choir is all about the joy of singing together and creating music in a relaxed, fun and social environment. A no-stress and no-audition Community Show Choir at your local theatre!

As well as joy, laughs, music and harmony, Altrincham Garrick Show Choir builds and encourages a healthier and safer way of singing. It improves musicality by working on vocal technique, rhythm, pitch and harmony singing in every rehearsal, boosting your confidence!

Singing together is a hugely wonderful and exciting experience. It’s also a great social event. So come on down and get involved today!

The event is all about relaxed, no pressure reading, so don't worry about not reading things correctly or in a certain way.

We're all working through it together.

Whilst some of us have taken part in plays, we're not about deep intellectual debate either. We may discuss a play but no one is ever expected to have previous knowledge of a play.

Garrick Playhouse Bar

The Altrincham Garrick Playhouse is a registered charity and one of the best live theatre venues in the South Manchester area, predominantly run by volunteers. Wherever you are seated in our comfortable 401-seat Main Auditorium, you are guaranteed both excellent leg room and an unhindered view of the stage.

The Bar is open from 6.45pm until 11:00pm on performance nights, and between 8:30pm until 11:00pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays of non-show weeks.

In addition to our Main Stage, a 50-seat Studio Theatre allows for the staging of more intimate productions. In both venues, you are guaranteed a warm, friendly welcome from our incredibly dedicated teams of volunteers, who work in conjunction with the Box Office and Bar staff to enhance your visit.

The Playhouse also has it’s own car park offering FREE PARKING to patrons.

The Garrick Playhouse is fortunate to be able to attract many of the most gifted local performers to appear in our own productions, as well as being able to draw on the best creative and directorial talent from the region. While our own in-house productions are classed as nonprofessional, everything about the theatre is set up and run with a completely professional outlook... which is absolutely right for one of the best live performance venues in the area.

The theatre has its own in-house facilities including a professional workshop, creating our own scenery, as well as lighting, sound, props and wardrobe departments, all of which wouldn’t be out of place if they were found in a top professional theatre.

Booking Fees There is an additional £2.50 transaction fee for each individual payment made either by phone or when booking online.

There are no booking fees charged for tickets bought by people visiting the Garrick’s Box Office in person.

Refunds & Exchanges No refunds are available unless the Event is cancelled, postponed or materially changed.

Exchanges are only permitted at the discretion of the theatre management and due to exceptional circumstances.

Little Dorothy Gale from Kansas, like so many girls her age, dreams of what lies over the rainbow. After a freak tornado hits her quiet farmhouse home, she is whisked away to the magical land of OZ! Now young Dorothy must follow the yellow brick road to meet the mighty Wizard of Oz who holds the power to take her home. On the way she teams up with a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodsman and a Cowardly Lion and they all must avoid the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West, who is trying to steal the mysterious magic slippers that once belonged to her evil sister but are now on Dorothy's feet.

Based on the 1939 MGM film, this stage classic features the well-loved songs “Merry Old Land of Oz”, “We’re Off to See the Wizard”, “Ding! Dong! The Witch is Dead” and of course “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”!
